TUI: handle sampling and elicitation requests from the server #2829

Closed

Description

@CloneOfAlex

Which client?

TUI

The problem

The TUI advertises neither sampling nor elicitation, so any tool that asks the user a question (elicitation/create) or requests a completion (sampling/createMessage) cannot be exercised from the terminal. The web client supports both, so terminal-only users (SSH, tmux, CI boxes) lose a whole class of server behavior.

Solution you have in mind (optional)

Advertise both capabilities in the TUI and render pending requests as a modal: a form built from the elicitation schema (reusing the tool-form component), and for sampling, the request messages with an editable response and Approve / Reject.

Alternatives or workarounds you have tried

Switching to the web client for those tools.

Already built it locally?

Before you submit

  • I searched existing issues and this is not a duplicate.
  • This is a request for the Inspector itself, not for the MCP specification or an SDK.

    Triage: Priority Low (total 5)

    • Severity 3 — a whole class of server behavior (sampling, elicitation) cannot be exercised from the TUI; the web client is the workaround
    • Urgency 2 — wanted eventually, nothing blocked on it
    • Bonuses: none (no milestone, assignee, epic, engagement or reporter-set priority)

Board: #28, Status Incoming (awaiting maintainer review — no milestone yet).

    Shipped in #2903 (merge dd5c366), on v2/main.
