asTimeline Visual in Power BI Report

In the Power BI report you use a visual called asTimeline. The visual is no longer certified in AppSource so will not load once you publish your report to the Power BI service. There is a workaround that, if you're admin, you can add the visual as an exclusion and allow your org to use the visual.

However, the asTimeline developer's site is gone and it's no longer in AppSource. I can't find a recent version anywhere. I found v 1.3.0.0 but that requires adding an older version as an exclusion in the service, allowing it to be used by the org, opening up your pbix and changing the 5 locations where asTimeline is used. The formatting is not the same and the old version doesn't have the same options. So it doesn't look good or go with your theme.

Describe the solution you'd like
Could you provide the asTimeline.pbiviz file for the version you use in your Power BI report? Then it could just be added as an exclusion to the Power BI service.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Tried building it using another visual, nothing really does what asTimeline does.
Using the old version, but difficult and does not look good.
Building a custom visual using Deneb.

Hi,
You can extract the pbviz file from the existing report. Rename the pbix to zip, then open the zip and go to Report -> CustomVisuals -> asTimeline... -> resources -> asTimeline...pbviz:

I tried that, but it doesn't seem to be a true .pbiviz file, unless you know a trick that I don't. That file has a .json file extension. I did try renaming it and removing the .json extension, but it won't even load into the service, returning an error message that "This file is not a valid PBIVIZ file."

Is there some way to use that as a .pbiviz? Appreciate the help. We've been looking for the current version for days as that visual will not work once published to the service.

Hmmm… what errors do you get when you try to use the extracted pbviz? As far as I know, this is a real pbviz.

As a test, I downloaded a random pbviz I could find online and inspected its structure, and it look consistent with our extracted pbviz. Sadly I don’t have the original pbviz as I was under the impression they can be extracted back from the report.

The trick could be in some checksum calculation etc so we can probably get tot the bottom of it if you could share and error.

Oh I just realised - the pbviz will be the folder, not the file:

so make this folder into a zip and rename as pbviz, this will your visual:

Ok, I got it working. It's still a little bit of a work around, but a better one than rebuilding the whole visual or changing visual versions.

1. Convert your .pbix file to .zip
2. Extract the zip file and navigate to Report -> CustomVisuals -> asTimeline3ECFC8FDEB264A3ABB1C0E31EC19FE14
3. Select both the resources folder and package.json file, then compress to zip (just renaming folder did not work for me, I had to zip it myself).
4. Rename the .zip file you just created as .pbiviz
5. Add visual into the service under admin portal -> Organization visuals **
6. "Enable for visualization pane" to allow the org to see this visual in Power BI desktop.
7. Then go into the .pbix and change all asTimeline visualizations from the original to the other asTimeline visualization that you just added in the service, even though they are the same version.

If you find a better way or have any other input, let me know.

** I was hoping step 5 would be the last step and would allow the visual to render, but I still got the error in the service, so had to add the subsequent steps.
