Summary

Allow an existing partition (e.g. sdb1 or /dev/disk/by-partlabel/data) to be listed in the disks of an LVM pool and used as a physical volume as it is, instead of requiring whole disks.

The role never creates, resizes or deletes such a partition:

  • existing data on the partition is wiped (refused in storage_safe_mode) and the partition is formatted as a PV
  • when the pool or the member is removed, the partition is wiped but kept, as is the partition table
  • extended partitions are rejected with a clear error
  • a partition scheduled for creation in the same run (partition volume with fs_type: lvmpv) that already has the right format is used as is
  • storage_use_partitions does not apply to members that are already partitions

Changes

  • library/blivet.py: handle partition members when creating and removing pool members and PVs
  • README.md: document the behaviour under pool disks
  • tests/tests_lvm_pool_partition_member.yml (plus scsi/nvme generated variants): existing partition as PV (create, idempotence, removal) and partition + VG created in a single role call
  • tests/test-verify-pool-members.yml: expect partition PVs when __storage_test_pv_is_partition is set

Test plan

  • tests_lvm_pool_partition_member.yml passes (scsi and nvme variants)
  • Existing LVM pool tests still pass

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Existing partitions can now be used as LVM pool members when partition management is disabled. The role preserves the partition and its partition table when removing the pool member, while clearing its contents.
    • In safe mode, the role refuses to use a partition containing a filesystem, leaving its contents intact.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified partition handling, including that extended partitions are unsupported and partition-management settings do not apply to existing partition members.

📝 Walkthrough

The role now supports existing partitions as LVM physical volumes when storage_use_partitions is false. It preserves partition tables during member and pool removal. The change adds tests for partition reuse, idempotence, removal, and safe-mode behavior.

Changes: LVM partition members

Layer / File(s) Summary
Partition member handling
README.md, library/blivet.py
The role uses eligible existing partitions as pool members, rejects extended partitions, and limits partition creation to applicable whole-disk members. When removing a partition-backed member, it clears the contents while retaining the partition and disklabel.
Partition member validation
tests/test-verify-pool-members.yml, tests/roles/caller/vars/*.yml, tests/tests_lvm_pool_partition_member*.yml
Tests cover existing and role-created partition members, repeated role runs, member removal, and safe-mode refusal. NVMe and SCSI wrappers run the shared test playbook.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 84562

Removing a pool or member can delete a partition that the role promises to preserve. Fix both removal paths before merging; the test gaps also need attention.

This changes the behavior for users who upgrade.

Before, the device would be destroyed if the type was "partition". Now, the device will not be destroyed. Does the device need to be destroyed in the ancestor.type == "partition" and not use_partitions case? Should the user be provided with an option to do that? For example, add a new parameter storage_destroy_partition_device: true - true by default which means do self._blivet.devicetree.recursive_remove(ancestor, remove_device=False) and self._blivet.destroy_device(ancestor) - if false, then skip the destroy_device

Blivet Python API destroy_device recursive_remove remove_device behavior

💡 Result:

In the current Blivet documentation (3.14.2), `recursive_remove` is the low-level device-tree operation; `destroy_device` is the higher-level `Blivet` helper.

- **`b.destroy_device(device)`** schedules destruction of the device’s format and device; changes are committed only when actions are run with `b.do_it()`. ([storaged.org](https://storaged.org/blivet/docs/intro.html))
- **`recursive_remove(device, actions=True, remove_device=True, modparent=True)`** removes dependent devices first, recursively, then handles the requested device. `actions` controls whether removal actions are scheduled; `remove_device` controls whether the root itself is removed; `modparent` controls parent updates. Disks are an exception: their formatting can be removed, but the disk device itself is retained. ([storaged.org](https://storaged.org/blivet/docs/blivet/blivet.html))
- **`remove_device`** is a *parameter* of `recursive_remove`, not a separate API method in the current docs. Setting it to `False` leaves the root device in place while still allowing recursive removal of its dependents. That last behavior follows from the parameter description plus the documented recursive behavior. ([storaged.org](https://storaged.org/blivet/docs/blivet/blivet.html))

The exact effects of `actions=False` and `modparent=False` beyond their documented descriptions aren’t specified there; check the implementation for your installed Blivet version before relying on those details.

Preserve supplied partitions when removing an LVM pool.

When storage_use_partitions=true, an existing partition reaches self._blivet.destroy_device(ancestor). Blivet schedules destruction of the device itself. This deletes the partition, which violates the README contract. Preserve only partitions listed in self._disks; partitions created from whole-disk inputs must remain removable.

Preserve former user-supplied partitions when removing VG members.

When storage_use_partitions=true, removing a previously explicit partition from disks reaches self._blivet.devicetree.recursive_remove(pv.raw_device) without remove_device=False. This deletes the partition, but the documented contract requires the partition and partition table to remain.

Do not test pv.raw_device in self._disks; remove_pvs selects members that are no longer represented by the current disk list. Record partition provenance when the member is created, retain it across later management calls, and use it to preserve former explicit partitions while still removing partitions created for whole-disk members.

Assert that removing the member clears its PV signature.

The role documents that removing a user-specified partition wipes its PV while preserving the partition. This test checks only that partition 2 remains. The shared verifier filters PVs by VG assignment, so it can pass if detached __part2 retains an orphan PV signature. Add a blkid check and an assert for __part2, as required for post-role state checks.

Add a post-role check for __part2 in the member-removal test: run blkid to
inspect its TYPE signature, then assert that the trimmed output is empty. Keep
the existing partition-presence check unchanged.

Wipe partition signatures before removing the partition table.

The safe-mode scenario leaves an ext4 signature on __part1. wipefs --all --force {{ __disk }} removes the disk’s partition table, not signatures inside its partitions. A later test that recreates the partition can encounter that old signature. Wipe the existing partition first, then wipe the disk. In the safe-mode cleanup task, wipe signatures from __part1 before running
wipefs on __disk to remove the partition table, so recreating the partition does
not encounter a stale ext4 signature.

Until now pool "disks" had to be whole disks. Allow an existing
partition (e.g. sdb1 or /dev/disk/by-partlabel/data) to be listed as a
member of an LVM pool and use it as a physical volume as it is.

The role never creates, resizes or deletes such a partition:
- when a member partition has existing data it is wiped (refused in
storage_safe_mode) and formatted as a PV, but the partition stays
- when the pool or the member is removed, the partition is wiped but
kept, as is the partition table
- extended partitions are rejected with a clear error
- a partition scheduled for creation in the same run (partition volume
with fs_type lvmpv) that already has the right format is used as is
- storage_use_partitions does not apply to members that are already
  partitions

Add tests covering an existing partition as PV (create, idempotence,
removal) and creating the partition and VG in a single role call,
generated for scsi and nvme disks. Teach test-verify-pool-members.yml
to expect partition PVs, and document the behaviour in the README.

true (default) destroys partition members as before.
false wipes but keeps the partition and the table.

Also applies to removing a single member from a pool.

"Two deletion paths need fixes before merge:

  1. Removing one pool member can destroy a partition despite storage_destroy_partition_device: false. In /tmp/storage-pr671-review/library/blivet.py:2031, the preservation branch requires not use_partitions. If a user explicitly lists a partition while storage_use_partitions: true, removal falls through to recursive_remove and deletes it. The README says that setting does not apply to members already specified as partitions.

  2. Removing a pool without repeating disks can also destroy partitions despite that setting. In /tmp/storage-pr671-review/library/blivet.py:1593, preservation requires the partition to be in self._disks. For a name-only state: absent request, the existing defaults logic populates disks from the VG’s underlying whole disks, so the partition takes the destruction branch.

The new tests cover neither case. They also omit the tests::cleanup tag required by .coderabbit.yaml on the cleanup tasks (/tmp/storage-pr671-review/tests/tests_lvm_pool_partition_member.yml:317)."

…ests::cleanup

The tasks in the always section clean up after the test. Tag them with
tests::cleanup, as required for the tests in this repository, so that
the cleanup can be skipped for debugging.

… is true

When a partition is removed from an LVM pool with
storage_destroy_partition_device: false, only the preservation branch
for partitions that are not created by the role honoured the setting:
it required storage_use_partitions to be false. With
storage_use_partitions: true a partition listed explicitly in disks
fell through to recursive_remove and was deleted, together with the
disklabel if it was the last partition. The README says that
storage_use_partitions does not apply to members that are already
partitions.

Handle every partition member that has to be kept in the preservation
branch: wipe it, keep the partition and the disklabel. With the default
storage_destroy_partition_device: true nothing changes.

Add a test that removes a listed partition from a pool with
storage_use_partitions: true and checks that the partition and the
partition table survive and the PV signature is gone.

BlivetPool._destroy only preserved a partition when it was found in
the disks of the pool as given in the playbook. For a request that only
has the name of the pool and state: absent, the disks are filled in from
the existing pool and then contain only whole disks, never the
partitions. The partition therefore took the destruction branch and,
as it was the last child of the disk, the disklabel was wiped as well,
although storage_destroy_partition_device was false.

Preserve every partition below the pool when
storage_destroy_partition_device is false: the contents are wiped, the
partition and the partition table are kept. With the default
(true) the partitions are destroyed as before; they are now wiped first,
which adds one destroy format action to the list of actions.

Add a test that removes a pool by name only and checks that the
partition and the partition table survive and the PV signature is gone.

…artitions below a pool

The setting also covers pools removed by name only and partitions that
were created by the role because of storage_use_partitions.

"Two deletion paths need fixes before merge:

1. **Removing one pool member can destroy a partition despite `storage_destroy_partition_device: false`.** In /tmp/storage-pr671-review/library/blivet.py:2031, the preservation branch requires `not use_partitions`. The new tests cover neither case. They also omit the tests::cleanup tag required by .coderabbit.yaml on the cleanup tasks (/tmp/storage-pr671-review/tests/tests_lvm_pool_partition_member.yml:317)."

Cause: Two code paths decided whether to keep a partition when
storage_destroy_partition_device is false, and both decided wrongly.

  • Removing one member from an LVM pool (BlivetLVMPool._manage_members)
only kept the partition when storage_use_partitions was false.
  • Removing a pool (BlivetPool._destroy) only kept a partition that was
listed in the pool's disks. For a request with only the pool name and
state: absent, the disks are filled in from the existing pool and
contain whole disks only, never the partitions.

Consequences: A partition that should have been wiped and kept was
deleted:

  • with storage_use_partitions: true, when a listed partition was removed
    from a pool;
  • when a pool was removed by name only, where the partition table was
wiped as well because the partition was the last child of the disk.
This contradicts the README, which says that
storage_destroy_partition_device: false keeps the partition and the
    partition table.

Fix: Preserve every partition member when
storage_destroy_partition_dking whether the
role or the user created it. The contents are wiped, the partition and
the partition table are kepothing changes
for members; when a pool is removed, partitions are now wiped before
they are destroyed, which aion to the
reported actions. The cleanup tasks in
tests_lvm_pool_partition_mets::cleanup, and
the README describes the broader scope of the setting.

Result: With storage_destroy_partition_device: false a partition is kept
in both removal paths, also: true and also
for a name-only pool removal. Two new tests in
tests_lvm_pool_partition_me. They fail
without the fix (partition 2 gone in the first case, the partition table
gone in the second) and pas
