fix(codex): read Artificial Analysis free model list before sunset - #8112
Role auto-assign stops reading measured scores for every user with an Artificial Analysis key once AA retires its legacy endpoint at 2026-11-04 23:59:59 UTC. From 2026-11-05 every daily refresh gets 410 Gone, and auto-assign quietly falls back to price tiering, reporting only capability.error: "Artificial Analysis could not be read". This PR moves the read to AA's free replacement endpoint before that date.
Failing input. Any request to the URL dev reads, keyed or not, already carries the retirement notice:
AA's migration guide says legacy /api/v2/data/* requests "will return 410 Gone" after the retirement date. It names /api/v2/language/models/free as the free replacement for /api/v2/data/llms/models and says existing keys keep working.
Root cause.src/codex/role-capability.ts:34 hard-codes the legacy URL (added in #7624). A 410 throws at :127, and loadCapabilityTable catches it at :157-158 and returns the price fallback. The per-domain index chain at :39-41 also reads artificial_analysis_coding_index, artificial_analysis_agentic_index and artificial_analysis_math_index. Per AA's OpenAPI spec (3.1.0, version 2.0), the coding and agentic indexes are "always null" and FreeEvaluations has no math index. So on the new endpoint only the Intelligence Index carries a score.
Fix (src/codex/role-capability.ts)
ARTIFICIAL_ANALYSIS_URL is now https://artificialanalysis.ai/api/v2/language/models/free. Per the spec it returns the same data[].name, data[].slug and data[].evaluations.artificial_analysis_intelligence_index fields, plus a pagination object (page, page_size, total_pages, has_more) and a page query parameter. The spec's example is 200 rows a page across 2 pages.
fetchArtificialAnalysisTable requests ?page=1, ?page=2, ... and stops when pagination.has_more is not true. The read is capped at MAX_TABLE_PAGES = 10 pages, a tenth of the free tier's documented 100 requests per 24 hours. The existing MAX_TABLE_BYTES (16 MiB) now bounds all pages together. A list longer than the page cap or larger than the byte bound fails the whole read, so price ranking takes over and nothing is tiered on a partial list.
Unchanged: the key goes only to the fixed artificialanalysis.ai HTTPS host in x-api-key, with redirect: "error" and the 30 s timeout on each request, a once-per-UTC-day cache, and the fallback to price when AA fails.
Every sizing domain is scored by the Intelligence Index, and the retired index names are removed.
Docs: the auto-assign section of docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/integrations.md, the codexRoleCapability row in docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/agents.md, and the role auto-assign paragraph in structure/subagents.md, which stays within its 600-line budget. The guide has no translated copies.
Verification
Commands ran in a worktree at upstream/dev43e2e4e57; the branch was then rebased onto 6f915d865 with no conflict, and the 21 tests in the pages and auto-assign files passed again there, through the pinned runner node_modules/bun/bin/bun.exe (bun --version 1.4.4, matching testRunnerBun).

RED: the new pages test file run against upstream/dev's role-capability.ts gives 0 pass, 4 fail. The updated existing tests give 28 pass, 7 fail across 5 files; that count includes the pages file failing at import, because MAX_TABLE_PAGES does not exist on dev.
GREEN: bun test over the 7 role-capability and auto-assign files gives 44 pass, 0 fail.
bun run typecheck: no type errors in 2,298 files.
bun run structure:check: passed. bun run privacy:scan: passed.
bun run test:changed (75 import-connected files) ended with exit 124: every role-capability and auto-assign test passed, and 257 tests in 36 other files timed out (this test timed out after 5000ms). None of those 36 files sets an Artificial Analysis key or imports role-capability; they run hub, desktop and Responses fixtures, and the machine's CPU was at 91% from other work during the run. A separate run of three of them hit the same timeouts before I stopped it. The PR's test changed CI job gives the clean read.
Limits. No live call with a real AA key was made, because no key was available. The new endpoint's shape, pagination and quota come from AA's OpenAPI spec and migration guide. A keyless request to /api/v2/language/models/free answers 401, which shows the path is live and expects the key. The real page size on the free tier is not measured; the 10-page cap leaves 5x headroom over the spec's 2-page example.
Follow-up 234a57e1e: a page without pagination.has_more now fails the read (CodeRabbit finding), with a regression test that fails on 18636821a; 103afb43f extends it to a string and a nullhas_more.

Updates
Auto-assignment now uses Artificial Analysis’s free model list and Intelligence Index scores across all sizing domains.
Model-list retrieval supports multiple pages, with limits on page count and total response size. Requests time out after 30 seconds and do not follow redirects.
Documentation
Updated setup guidance to describe daily model-list reads, scoring behavior, and API key requirements.
- Point role capability at /api/v2/language/models/free; the legacy /api/v2/data/llms/models sends Sunset: Wed, 04 Nov 2026 23:59:59 GMT and answers 410 Gone afterwards, which would drop every keyed user to price tiering
- Follow pagination.has_more page by page, capped at 10 pages per daily refresh and 16 MiB across all pages; a longer or larger list fails the read so price ranking takes over
- Score every domain by the Intelligence Index, since the Coding and Agentic Indexes are always null and the free list has no math index
- Keep the key on the fixed HTTPS host with redirect: "error" and the 30 s timeout per request
- Add tests for two pages then stop, the page cap, the cross-page byte bound and the legacy path answering 410, and move the existing tests to the new URL and field
- Update the auto-assign guide, the configuration reference and structure/subagents.md

Walkthrough
Artificial Analysis capability loading now uses the paginated free-model list. Finite Intelligence Index scores apply across sizing domains. The loader enforces page and total-byte limits, and tests and documentation describe the updated behavior.

- Treat a page missing pagination.has_more as a failed read so price tiering takes over, instead of ending the list early
- Give the single-page fixtures the pagination block the API requires
Add a test for a present non-boolean pagination.has_more.
The loader rejects every non-boolean has_more, but no test covers a present non-boolean value. A check that rejects only undefined would accept "false", which is truthy, and keep paging until the page cap. The new test covers only the absent-field case, so it would still pass. Add a test that sends has_more: "false" and expects the read to fail on the first request.

Add a test for a present non-boolean pagination.has_more value alongside the
existing missing-field test for fetchArtificialAnalysisTable. Return "false"
from the first page, assert the read rejects with an error mentioning
pagination.has_more, and verify only the first page was requested.
