fix(responses): unwrap one extra executable freeform body wrapper - #8048
Fix executable freeform calls whose function input contains another complete JSON object of the form {"input":"<body>"}. Previously the normal wrapper decode delivered that object as the exec program or patch body, causing a syntax or patch-envelope error. The shared decoder now removes exactly one extra canonical string-input layer for local exec/apply_patch grammars.
Extra members, non-string input, unrelated tool grammars and namespaces keep their existing interpretation. The repair never recurses. Progressive decoding holds a possible nested object until completion, preventing deltas from exposing wrapper bytes that the completed item removes. A wrapped JavaScript block that starts with an opening brace also waits for completion, while its completed bytes remain unchanged.
The repair belongs at the existing shared representation boundary rather than in one provider adapter. No dependency, configuration, credential, logging or retry change is included. The latest release and dev were checked for an existing fix, and open PR searches found no equivalent repair.
Verification
Bun 1.4.4 with the repository's test-home isolation/preload:
Before the production fix, seven new regression cases failed on the unmodified decoder. The final focused set passes on both this dev-based tree and 2.94.0 with the separate image patch: 264 passed, 0 failed, 5,139 assertions.
Exact focused command: bun test tests/responses/apply-patch-envelope.test.ts tests/responses/responses-freeform-wrapper-keys.test.ts tests/responses/responses-custom-tool-stream-consistency.test.ts tests/responses/responses-custom-tool-repair.test.ts tests/responses/responses-custom-tool-repair-dispatch.test.ts tests/responses/custom-tool-compat.test.ts tests/adapters/bridge.test.ts tests/providers/claude-cli-tool-capture.test.ts.
Regressions cover exec syntax, patch input, ordinary and single-wrapped bodies, extra keys, non-string values, unrelated namespaces/grammars, the one-extra-layer bound, and patch recognition under exec. Every two-fragment split checks both direct and routed SSE input-done, item-done and terminal output; per-character coverage checks preview holds and unchanged ordinary progress.
bun check --no-script --noEmit: no type errors in 2,253 files. This is the exact check used by the typecheck script, invoked through the existing Bun binary because the locked dependency install used --ignore-scripts and its bundled Bun launcher was not materialised. The initial bun run typecheck launcher failure is not claimed as passing.
bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts, and git diff --check: passed.
cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts && bun run build: passed, 633 pages and 91,435 internal links.
Independent final diff review: PASS, with no blocking findings or unnecessary mechanism.
Additional live compatibility check on the pinned runtime: a native Claude Opus 5.5 conversation returned the expected results for ordinary exec, a requested deliberately double-wrapped exec, ordinary apply_patch, and a requested wrapped patch submitted through exec. Both patch results were read back independently. Native history records the restored calls and does not preserve the original vendor argument bytes; the exact double-wrapper shape is asserted by the regression tests. This is compatibility evidence, not a broad-suite or CI claim.
Focused-validation exception
The shared decoder's import graph selects much of the repository. OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN=<existing Bun 1.4.4> bun scripts/test.ts --changed=origin/dev was interrupted after nearly six minutes and roughly 12 GB of worker memory. It is incomplete and not passing evidence. Its buffered output contained 71 failures; all reported failure names reproduced on an unmodified checkout of the same dev revision with the same sparse layout. Examples include absent launcher, GUI, desktop, translated README and devlog fixture files. Baseline reproduction does not turn the interrupted run green.
Use the documented focused-validation exception for this bounded compatibility repair. The named relevant regressions pass on the final code, and no tests were removed, skipped or disabled. The full suite was not completed. Broader coverage remains for CI; required exact-head CI must pass before any upstream merge. Review readiness uses this documented scope exception and makes no full-suite or CI-pass claim.

Bug Fixes
Routed exec and apply_patch inputs with one extra JSON wrapper are now handled correctly when the wrapper contains only a string input value. Other tools and nonmatching inputs remain unchanged.
Previews for object-leading executable inputs may wait until the full input is available, avoiding partial previews that could differ from the completed input.
Documentation
Updated the routed local tools guide with details about the input repair and its limits.

input leaves the object undecided; accept a later string input duplicate, and

{"input":1,"input":"cmd"}.
Walkthrough
The change removes one extra canonical JSON wrapper from routed local exec and apply_patch bodies. It adds incremental parsing that holds previews while input could still form a nested wrapper, and updates both streaming paths to reuse a reader per tool call.
Changes: Freeform Input Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Repair extra executable input wrappers src/responses/apply-patch-envelope.ts, tests/responses/apply-patch-envelope.test.ts
Completion-time unwrapping removes one object only when it contains exactly one string input field. Tests cover preserved noncanonical and unsupported cases, nested execution, and decorated patch compilation.
Classify and decode incremental input src/responses/freeform-wrapper-scan.ts, src/responses/progressive-freeform-input.ts, structure/transports/responses.md, tests/responses/responses-freeform-wrapper-keys.test.ts
The reader resumes scans and decoding across updates. For exec and apply_patch, it withholds previews while a nested wrapper or code fence remains possible. Tests cover ambiguous prefixes, duplicate keys, invalid shapes, and resumed scans.
Reuse the reader in streaming paths src/bridge/sse.ts, src/server/responses-custom-tool-repair.ts, structure/transports/byte-accounting.md, tests/responses/responses-custom-tool-stream-consistency.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md
Both streaming paths retain a reader per call. Tests compare previews and completed inputs across routed and direct SSE paths. The transport documentation describes the reader’s byte-accounting lifecycle, and the guide documents wrapper handling.
No concrete merge-blocking regression remains established. The documentation clarification and existing duplicate-key streaming inconsistency can be addressed as follow-up work.

The title "fix(responses): unwrap one extra executable freeform body wrapper" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives describe OpenCodeX removing exactly one extra canonical {"input": "<body>"} wrapper from local exec and apply_patch bodies. The title names the scope (responses), the fix type, and the specific behavior. The supporting changes (progressive reader, streaming holds, tests) serve that same goal. The title is specific and accurate, and it stays within the 8-word, single-sentence style the check expects.

Each delta decoded the whole accumulated canonical value and walked the whole decoded body again for a nested executable wrapper, so one-character deltas did quadratic work. A per-call ProgressiveFreeformInputReader now resumes where the previous delta stopped, and the nested-wrapper check is an incremental state machine that also releases a non-string nested input once no later string duplicate can follow.
Qualify the "Past the bound nothing is previewed" sentence.
The sentence is true only for an undecided scan. A canonical string input that is found within the 4,096-character bound keeps streaming past it.

fix(responses): unwrap one extra executable freeform body wrapper. Maintainer follow-ups replaced the hold-everything approach with an incremental reader: ordinary object-leading executable bodies keep progressive previews, while double-wrapped exec/apply_patch inputs are held and unwrapped on completion.
Exact-head required CI passed: ci, enforce-target, hygiene, test 1/4–4/4. Later dev commits overlap only in two docs files; GitHub reports no conflict.
Fresh final review (gpt-6.1-terra, high) on this head: no P0–P2 findings; streaming regression checks pass; no security-boundary change. Focused responses/tool-stream tests 305/0; layout and ratchet 38/0.
The one open CodeRabbit thread (duplicate input keys in the preview) reproduces on dev before this PR; answered and tracked as a follow-up, along with a wording tightening in structure/transports/responses.md about the scan limit.

Avoid repeatedly flattening the growing numeric scalar
When a possible nested wrapper contains a long numeric input value, indexing this.scalar[0] immediately after every append repeatedly flattens the growing string, making this new scanner quadratic. On the available Bun 1.2.14 runtime, a 256-KB numeric value followed by a string-valued duplicate made createRoutedCustomToolRestoreBlockRewrite block synchronously for approximately 6.9 seconds. This input is below the existing 2-MiB argument cap, and both SSE callers invoke the reader synchronously, so one admitted provider argument can stall other requests and timers. Cache the scalar's initial character or kind rather than rereading the accumulated string; the scannedChars assertion does not account for these repeated copies.
