fix(bridge): stop a quoted memory-citation tag from truncating answers - #8044
The Codex client treats a literal <oai-mem-citation> as markup and drops everything between the first opening tag and the last closing tag, so a model that quotes the tag in prose loses the rest of its answer. The bridge and the adapter encoder now escape such mentions while keeping a real citation block (one whose body validates) byte for byte, in the streaming and buffered paths.
Streaming: a candidate block is held WHOLE until its closing tag arrives and is released verbatim only when its body validates, so streamed deltas equal the final output_text.done text. A tag split across deltas is handled; an invalid, never-closed or over-16 KiB candidate is escaped. The held bytes are charged to the translator budget (live_transient) and released when the message closes. The Responses bridge and the adapter encoder each keep one escaper per message.
Owning contract updated in place: structure/transports/responses-wire-shapes.md.
Verification
bun x tsc --noEmit, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: pass
bun test tests/responses/citation-markers.test.ts tests/responses/protocol-direct-encoders-chat.test.ts plus the two Argon test files: 120 pass / 0 fail. New cases: real block split one character at a time, a two-way-split parity sweep, Chat-encoder and Responses-bridge delta/done parity, held-bytes charge and release (fails without the budget code), and an oversized candidate being escaped.
After review fixes and merging current dev (head a21626617): bun run typecheck passes; every test file importing citation-markers, anthropic-progress, bridge/sse or adapter-events passes (4 files, 168 pass, 0 fail). Signed progress text now escapes its visible copy; a valid block above the hold limit now gets the same rule in deltas and in the final text.
Full suite not run locally (Windows, slow); left to CI.

Bug Fixes
Literal memory-citation tags in assistant messages and visible progress updates are now escaped, preventing them from being mistaken for citation markup.
Valid citation blocks remain unchanged. Escaping now works consistently when messages arrive in streamed parts, including at message completion.
Progress updates retain their original text in the associated reasoning data.
…om truncating answers
Gemini 4 Argon answers through CCA with thought parts only when the request names
its tier in thinkingConfig. The Argon wire ids already carry the tier as a suffix
(gemini-4-argon-high), so the adapter sent includeThoughts alone; live CCA then
returns 200 with thousands of thoughtsTokenCount and zero thought parts, and the
plan arrives as ordinary visible text. Measured 2026-10-27: the same request with
thinkingLevel repeated alongside includeThoughts returns the thought stream, while
gemini-3.8-flash does not need it and keeps its one-field shape.
Separately, the Codex client treats a literal <oai-mem-citation> as markup and
drops everything between the first opening tag and the last closing tag. A model
that quotes the tag in prose loses the rest of its answer, which reads as a turn
truncated at a backtick. The bridge now escapes mentions while leaving a real
citation block (one whose body starts with <citation_entries>) byte for byte, in
both the streaming and buffered paths.

Walkthrough
The change adds escaping for literal memory-citation mentions while preserving qualifying citation blocks. Stream encoders apply the escaping across deltas and message closure, track held text against the translator budget, and escape visible progress text while retaining raw envelope text.

Summary
Citation escaping and validation src/responses/citation-markers.ts, tests/responses/citation-markers.test.ts
Whole-string and streaming handling preserves qualifying citation blocks up to 16,384 characters and escapes tags outside them. Tests cover split tags, incomplete or invalid blocks, and oversized candidates. stripCitationMarkers now escapes memory-citation mentions in both filtered and unfiltered text.
Stream output and progress integration src/bridge/sse.ts, src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts, src/responses/anthropic-progress.ts, tests/responses/citation-markers.test.ts, structure/transports/responses-wire-shapes.md
The SSE bridge and adapter encoder use an escaper per open message, account for held bytes, and flush pending text at close. Visible progress text is escaped while its reasoning envelope retains raw text. Tests cover stream output, budget accounting, and progress mirrors; the wire-shapes documentation describes these rules.

Merge Risk: Low · up to a2162
The change addresses split citation mentions and signed progress text. Two narrow issues remain: malformed citation bodies can pass validation, and multibyte candidates can exceed the documented holding limit. These warrant localized fixes or bounded follow-up rather than blocking an otherwise mergeable change.

Keep the Argon level when discovery resolves a suffix id.
When discovery lists only one Argon tier, the lone row keeps its suffix id, for example gemini-4-argon-high. A request for that id then returns from the discovered-id branch before the Rule 1 suffix logic runs. That branch adds no thinkingLevel for Argon, so the request omits the level that exposes thought parts.
The branch is reached because gemini-4-argon-high is not a key in ANTIGRAVITY_EFFORT_WIRE_MAP or ANTIGRAVITY_THINKING_LEVEL_MODELS. Discovery is therefore consulted for it. Rule 1 would add thinkingLevel for this id. The discovered-id branch returns first.
A complete Argon family does not reach this path. The family collapses to the base id, which is handled by the explicit-effort rules.
Apply the same Argon suffix handling inside the discovered-id branch:

src/responses/citation-markers.ts:218-240: a real streamed citation loses its closing tag. push() emits the opening tag once <citation_entries> is seen, but keeps no in-block state, so the closing-tag branch always emits </oai-mem-citation>. A complete block therefore differs between deltas and output_text.done. I independently reproduced this on Bun 1.4.4 by feeding the existing valid-block fixture one character at a time: the full-string helper preserves it, while the streaming helper changes the close tag. Track the block through its close and define the incomplete/invalid-body behavior; add a full real-block streaming regression and assert delta/done parity.
src/protocols/encoders/adapter-events.ts:609: the per-delta whole-string helper misses an ordinary mention split as "quoted <oai-mem-", "citation> prose". Independently invoking the exact two helper calls used at this site reproduces the raw tag instead of the escaped mention. Use message-owned incremental state on this encoder too, flush it on close, and add an encoder-level split-delta regression. These independently confirm the two existing CodeRabbit threads; they should remain open until corrected.
The two scratch repros failed as expected (0 pass / 2 fail), using disposable homes and CPU75%/1536MiB/no-swap/64-task cgroup limits. No live provider/client call or scan was used. This is failure evidence, not a green suite or a full Argon validation.
Please also split the unrelated Argon effort-wire and client citation-rendering fixes into separate reviewable changes, as the description already offers. Update the relevant owning structure contracts (Argon suffix/thought-level and citation/streaming accounting); the current six-file diff changes neither owning document despite changing both contracts. Recheck the existing byte-budget/partial-tail behavior when adding escaper state rather than introducing an unbounded uncharged buffer.
Parameterize the lone-tier Argon discovery test across all three tiers.
The lone-tier branch in resolveAntigravityEffortWireModel (src/providers/antigravity-models.ts) derives thinkingLevel from the captured tier in the wire id. The test at tests/adapters/google/antigravity-discovered-families.test.ts:103-106 registers only gemini-4-argon-high. A regression that hard-codes high in that branch would still pass. Parameterizing the test over low, medium, and high makes it assert that thinkingLevel equals the registered tier. The file-level afterEach hooks reset the discovery registration between tests, so the generated cases do not share state.

@Ingwannue9de0e6d4 addresses the two streaming defects from your review. Could you re-check those when you have time?
Closing tag lost in a streamed block: the streaming escaper now holds a candidate <oai-mem-citation> block whole until it closes. A valid block is released verbatim with both tags, so deltas match output_text.done. A block that closes without a valid body is escaped as a mention. The hold is capped at 64 KiB; past that cap the text is treated as a mention. tests/responses/citation-markers.test.ts adds a char-by-char real-block regression with delta/done parity.
Split mention in the adapter encoder:adapter-events.ts now keeps per-message escaper state, flushes it when the message closes, and has an encoder-level split-delta regression ("quoted <oai-mem-" + "citation> prose").
Still open from your review, so this is not ready yet:
splitting the Argon effort-wire change and the citation-rendering fix into separate PRs;
updating the owning structure contracts (Argon suffix/thought level, and citation/streaming accounting);
rechecking the byte-budget accounting: the 64 KiB hold is bounded but not yet charged against the partial-tail budget.

Assert the visible message item text in the signed-progress test.
The test named signed progress text escapes only its visible copy does not check the escaped text of the visible message item. Its only check on that item is isAnthropicProgressMirror(...), which accepts both the raw and the escaped text. If the message item in anthropicProgressItems stopped escaping, the test would still pass. The response.output_item.done item and buffered output would then contain the raw <oai-mem-citation> tag. Add a direct assertion on the item content:

Measure the memory-citation hold limit in UTF-8 bytes.
MAX_MEMORY_CITATION_HOLD (16,384) is compared with UTF-16 string lengths, but the contract is 16 KiB. A multibyte candidate can therefore hold up to three times the documented bytes. The held bytes are then charged to the budget as UTF-8, so the overshoot reaches the budget.

The blockers from my earlier change request are resolved at this head:
A real streamed block now keeps its closing tag. createMemoryCitationEscaper (src/responses/citation-markers.ts:205-266) holds a candidate block until it closes and shares opensRealBlock and the size rule with the whole-string form. The char-by-char, two-way-split and bridge delta/done parity tests cover this.
adapter-events.ts keeps one escaper per message and resolves the held text in closeCurrentMessage. The Chat-encoder split-mention regression covers it.
The Argon change was split out to #8139. Held bytes are charged as live_transient and released on close.
Before approval:
Hosted CI had not run on this head; I have approved the fork runs (Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts). We need gates and test changed green on this exact head.
structure/providers/anthropic-progress.md:30 still says the parser drops the commentary copy only on "exact text". isAnthropicProgressMirror (src/responses/anthropic-progress.ts:30-31) now also accepts the escaped copy. Please update the owning contract.
Please answer the two open CodeRabbit threads:
citation-markers.ts:127: the limit is 16,384 UTF-16 units while the contract says "16 KiB". Measure in bytes or fix the wording.
citation-markers.test.ts:294: see the next point. I think that suggestion should be declined.
Non-blocking notes:
citation-markers.ts:84 requires <rollout_ids>. Codex's parse_memory_citation (codex-rs/memories/read/src/citations.rs) accepts entries without an ids block, and also <thread_ids>. If a model leaves out <rollout_ids>, the block is now escaped and shown as raw text instead of being parsed as a citation, which is a regression from current dev. Consider requiring only a complete <citation_entries>…</citation_entries> directly after the open tag, rather than tightening further.
citation-markers.ts:66-71, :135-136 and responses-wire-shapes.md:598 describe the client as hiding up to the last closing tag. codex-rs/utils/stream-parser/src/citation.rs matches literally and non-nested up to the first close, and an unclosed open tag hides the rest at EOF. The comment also says < "keeps the same visible characters in every renderer". CommonMark does not decode entities in code spans or fenced code, so the PR's own example, `<oai-mem-citation>`, displays as <oai-mem-citation>. Please correct the wording and state this trade-off.
tests/responses/citation-markers.test.ts:403-410 checks the visible item only through isAnthropicProgressMirror, which accepts both forms. Assert content[0].text equals the escaped text directly.
Question: the escaping also applies to the Chat Completions and Messages encoders (adapter-events.ts:617, :637-641), whose clients do not parse <oai-mem-citation>. Is rewriting their text to < intended there?
