Claude Code/Desktop MCP clients currently cannot use OpenCodex to queue text to a stored Codex app thread when no control socket is exposed. Add an opt-in ocx message mcp --codex <absolute-cli-path> --codex-home <absolute-existing-home> stdio host with two tools:
codex_threads: one cursor-based page of up to 50 stored, non-archived thread IDs/names, explicitly marked liveStateVerified: false.
codex_queue_message: one text-only, correlated thread/queue/add request to an exact UUID. A confirmed receipt is queued, never a claim of processing or a reply.
The host uses the existing MCP SDK dependency. Each operation starts an explicitly selected, short-lived Codex app-server over stdio; text stays off argv and native diagnostics are not returned. It reuses executable trust validation, bounds concurrency/output/deadlines, joins owned helper cleanup, and never retries an uncertain send. Incoming text has a fixed peer-context label, not an approval/authority claim.
Existing loaded-only ocx message sessions/send, their control-socket requirements, and remote-peer behavior are preserved. This is an initial outbound MCP slice, not complete bidirectional Claude interoperability: no Claude inbox transport, automatic answer readback, persistent handoffs, client configuration, thread resume, turn start, steering or daemon management. The native CLI may maintain its own state in the selected home. This uses an experimental native protocol and does not claim official cross-app interoperability guarantees.
Context: #6478. This PR does not close the broader session interoperability request.

Native smoke on current head: launched the new CLI as an MCP server against the installed Codex CLI and verified a real codex_threads response: stored metadata available, 50 rows, liveStateVerified: false. No thread names/history were logged.
Prior native send smoke (on fe480be): an authorized text probe to a dedicated idle app thread, without a control socket, produced the exact expected reply. This is historical evidence; recipient consumption was not re-probed on the merge head. No personal thread IDs/home paths/conversation output are committed.
Historical full-suite results and scope exception
The prior full run, on fe480be based on a022a67, completed all configured lanes in 803 seconds and failed: 58,014 pass / 662 skip / 30 fail, plus one between-test error associated with a doctor timeout. This result is retained as failed. The full suite was not rerun on the merge head and is not claimed green.
Attribution and follow-up:
21 installer-retry cases initially failed because GNU timeout was absent. After installing Homebrew coreutils 9.12_1 locally, bun run test --parallel=1 tests/ci-workflows/ci-bun-install-frozen.test.ts passed all 24 cases on df27e01; the installer script is unchanged in this merge.
On the unchanged a022a67 baseline, catalog-async-lifetime, catalog-omit-disabled-native and codex-cli-update-apply reproduced five failures (86 pass / 5 fail). Some published-launcher updater cases refuse active sessions in this development environment.
Baseline targeted checks reproduced three more failures in request-history integrity, detached shim redispatch and update-stop-first recovery, plus the representative GNU prerequisite failure. That command produced 1 pass / 4 fail, with 256 cases filtered. The doctor case passed in isolation on both baseline and df27e01.
These are historical baseline results, not assertions that every failure persists on the new base. In particular, the updated request-history file passes in the fresh 223-case set above.
Baseline commands used:
bun run test --parallel=1 tests/codex-integration/catalog-async-lifetime.test.ts tests/codex-integration/catalog-omit-disabled-native.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-apply.test.ts
bun run test --parallel=1 --test-name-pattern 'delayed detached redispatch|routing health marks query corruption|the opt-in flag removes it|npm launcher restarts the stopped runtime|ordinary install failure 1 never retries' tests/codex-integration/codex-shim.test.ts tests/usage/request-history-integrity.test.ts tests/codex-integration/doctor.test.ts tests/update/update-stop-first.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/ci-bun-install-frozen.test.ts
Local validation uses the documented resource/scope exception in AGENTS.md and MAINTAINERS.md. The previous full attempt took over thirteen minutes, and this active development host cannot safely make its unrelated Codex sessions inactive for updater fixtures. The changed graph and explicit subprocess/CLI/execution-boundary suites above cover the new feature and its integration. No failing result is omitted, assertions are not weakened, and unrelated baseline issues are not silently repaired in this feature PR.
Hosted upstream validation now completed successfully for this exact head (run attempt 2 for both workflows):
The maintainer allowed the existing current-head runs. All four selected Ubuntu test shards and the gates completed successfully; the changed test-layout surface already selected broader Ubuntu coverage, so no exception label or PR lane=all dispatch was needed. This is hosted Ubuntu evidence for the synthetic MCP/queue/lifecycle contracts, not new installed-app/goal/cross-app validation. No merge has been performed.
CodeRabbit's valid usage omission was fixed in df27e01, and its incremental review completed without additional findings. Fresh incremental review of the merge head completed successfully with no actionable comments (CodeRabbit check 124375590831; covered commit 307c66df). There are no inline review comments to resolve. Current local-validation attestations refer to the scope above; they do not claim a green full suite or upstream CI.
Native Linux interoperability, Windows refusal on Windows, active-goal/turn consumption, unloaded-thread wakeup and real Claude Desktop registration remain unvalidated. MCP access to the configured home is a local-user trust boundary, not project/thread isolation; maintainer review of this execution boundary remains pending.
Maintainer hold disposition
Ingwannu's current-head follow-up confirms successful Cross-platform CI, Catalog contracts, all four selected Ubuntu shards, gates and aggregate CI. The reviewer inspected the test-job logs and identified 25 passing MCP/queue/lifecycle cases in jobs 124376656034 and 124376656035. This is hosted execution evidence; it does not claim independent local/native app execution.
The reviewer explicitly states that the missing-CI and independent technical/execution-boundary conditions of the earlier hold are satisfied for this limited optional scope and withdraws the request to keep this PR Draft on those grounds. No new generic owner-acceptance condition or additional live-call requirement is imposed. The final author readiness attestation is therefore completed for unchanged head 307c66df; at this check the branch is two commits behind dev, within the policy limit. Formal approval still requires a fresh Ready/head/review snapshot. Readiness is not a merge, release or broader interoperability acceptance.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an optional MCP host for listing up to 50 stored conversations and queueing text to a specific conversation by exact UUID.
The host requires explicit Codex CLI and home paths, supports macOS and Linux, and is unavailable on Windows.
Up to four requests can run at once. The host cleans up its helper processes when work is cancelled or the connection closes.
Documentation
Clarified that session and send commands work with loaded sessions, while the MCP host operates on stored conversations.
Explained that queued messages are not confirmation of processing and uncertain delivery outcomes should not be replayed.

Walkthrough
This change adds an opt-in ocx message mcp stdio host for listing stored Codex threads and queueing text to an exact thread UUID. It uses short-lived app-server helpers, bounded operations, and receipts that distinguish confirmed queueing from rejection or uncertain outcomes.
The CLI dispatches message mcp, accepts explicit absolute Codex executable and home paths, and rejects unsupported platforms. Capability declarations and command references describe the new command and distinguish it from loaded-session messaging.
App-server RPC and helper lifecycle src/messaging/mcp-queue-rpc.ts, src/messaging/mcp-queue-server.ts
The RPC client initializes stdio helpers, sends supported requests, validates responses, and classifies failures as not_sent, unknown, or a response. The server limits concurrent operations and shuts down active helpers.
The tools expose codex_threads and codex_queue_message, validate inputs, and distinguish a queued receipt from processing. Tests cover tool behavior, failure outcomes, cancellation, and helper cleanup. Documentation describes the host’s limits and its separation from loaded-session messaging.

Add mcp to the ocx message usage string.
This Usage: line is unchanged, but this PR adds mcp as a subcommand. ocx message with bad arguments still prints a usage line that omits mcp. The registry entry in src/cli/registry.ts lists mcp. The two sources now disagree.

The changed-graph rerun passed (2,067 pass / 1 skip). I also ran the full local suite; it did not pass, so the PR remains draft while I document baseline/environment reproduction and the remaining CI boundary.

CodeRabbit's valid usage-string finding is fixed and its incremental check completed without further findings. Changed-graph tests (2,067 pass / 1 skip) and focused tests (147 pass) are green. The PR description records the full local macOS failures and baseline reproductions rather than claiming a green full suite. Please add ci:full if needed to ensure the subprocess/source-inventory contracts receive full Ubuntu coverage. I am keeping the PR in draft while the broader validation remains unresolved.

Fresh validation: changed graph 2,071 pass / 1 skip; explicit MCP, CLI/lifecycle, execution-boundary, bigint file-identity and request-history suites 223 pass across 20 files; type/privacy/structure/generated-surface/size checks and docs build passed. Actual native MCP metadata listing also passed. Historical full-suite failures and the documented scope exception remain in the description; a green full suite is not claimed.

Reviewed the complete21-file feature diff, including the CLI parser, stdio host, bounded metadata projection, queue RPC/receipt classification, offline helper fixtures and owning docs. The head moved from df27e01ed07765d1789524d65a833abd01106647 to 307c66dfce4a777be187abf679cf21a49e68a2fd during inspection. The earlier approval attempt was correctly rejected; comparison of the new dev-merge head confirms the reviewed queue implementation, CLI entry and synthetic helper are unchanged.
I have now allowed the existing current-head Cross-platform CI41147343001 and Catalog contracts41147343125. This permission is separate from code, architecture or integration approval. The changed test-layout surface already selects broader Ubuntu coverage under the current lane policy; I did not add an exception label, dispatch a PR lane=all run or rerun a failing job.
No independent local MCP/CLI execution is claimed. The listed2,067 changed-graph/147 focused results are author receipts, and the full-suite failures remain limitations. Local validation in this maintenance batch was halted after an unrelated protected runtime configuration changed; no real Codex home, queue, daemon or recipient was accessed. Keep this Draft while broader validation and owner acceptance remain outstanding, as its current state does.
The important contract is retained explicitly: stored metadata does not prove a loaded/live recipient; queued confirms correlated storage, not processing; uncertainty after a queue write is not replay permission. Synthetic helper tests do not prove installed app consumption or goal behavior. No tools from this proposed feature were invoked and no message was delivered to another session.

Head-bound follow-up at 307c66dfce4a777be187abf679cf21a49e68a2fd: Cross-platform run41147343001, Catalog41147343125, all four selected Ubuntu shards, gates and aggregate ci have now completed successfully. I read the actual test-job logs rather than treating the aggregate alone as proof. They contain 25 passing MCP/queue/lifecycle cases: CLI syntax, actual stdio MCP handshake, four-helper refusal/disconnect reaping, metadata projection, receipt correlation, rejection/uncertainty cases, invalid UTF-8/output limits, cancellation, deadline/no-resubmission, and inert activation. Jobs124376656034 and124376656035 contain those executed cases; this is hosted Ubuntu evidence, not a new local or native-app run.
My independent source review of the complete21-file feature remains current. For this deliberately limited local-user slice, explicit executable/home selection through the existing execution owner, command-only activation, fixed thread UUID/plain-text limits, private diagnostic projection, correlated queued receipt and no replay of unknown outcomes are consistent with the documented contract. Stored metadata is not live-session proof; queued is not consumption; this does not introduce per-project/thread isolation. Installed app/goal consumption and cross-app registration remain unverified and are accurately excluded from the claimed slice.
Prior hold disposition: the missing-CI and independent technical/execution-boundary review conditions in my earlier COMMENT are now satisfied for this exact optional scope. I withdraw my earlier request to keep this PR Draft on those grounds. I am not adding a new generic owner-acceptance condition or requesting live calls merely to reproduce the synthetic contract. Please complete the final author readiness attestation when you are satisfied with the documented scope; I will not tick it or change Draft on your behalf. Formal approval still requires the fresh Ready/head/review snapshot. This is not a merge, release or broader interoperability acceptance, and no scan was run.

Approved for exact head 307c66dfce4a777be187abf679cf21a49e68a2fd targeting dev (63de499e1 at review).
The author has now completed current-head readiness and the PR is Ready. My prior manual source/contract review and follow-up remain applicable because the head is unchanged. The opt-in command stays inert during ordinary startup; its explicit executable/home boundary, bounded metadata/text tools, correlated storage receipts, cancellation/owned-helper cleanup and no-replay behavior match the documented local-user scope. There are no review threads or outstanding maintainer change requests in the fresh snapshot.
Exact-head Cross-platform CI 41147343001 and Catalog contracts 41147343125 are successful, including all four selected Ubuntu shards and gates. I independently inspected the actual hosted logs for the 25 MCP/queue/lifecycle cases recorded in my preceding review. I have not repeated passing unchanged-code tests or made native/live queue calls. The historical failed full local run remains disclosed under the documented resource exception.
This approval covers this limited stored-queue MCP slice. It does not certify native recipient consumption, active goals, Claude Desktop registration or Windows/macOS interoperability, and it does not close #6478 or authorize a merge/release. The earlier Draft hold is withdrawn as stated in my follow-up; no further generic acceptance hold is being added.
