fix(config): keep a protected recovery copy before persisting the opencode-free retirement - #7836
Fixes#7800. Loading a config that still contains the retired opencode-free provider disables the entry and its dependent references in memory; the source comment claimed this projection never rewrites config.json, but the next configuration save (for example ocx config set port 10101) persisted it and silently removed the row, with no way to get it back.
The behaviour now matches the repository's existing precedent for load projections (the OpenCode wire upgrades are persisted by the next explicit edit), is disclosed, and is recoverable:
Before any save can remove retired data, the original config.json bytes are kept once as config.json.pre-opencode-free-removal.bak (or a unique sibling when that name is taken by a different or unprotected file). The copy is written through the existing protected atomic writer, with the same owner-only protection as config.json (Windows ACL / POSIX 0600) applied before publication; an existing copy is reused only when it is byte-identical and verified owner-only. Overlapping first loads may leave more than one identical protected copy; a copy is never named unless it holds the original bytes and is protected.
The live-save reconciliation path preserves the same exact bytes from its authoritative disk read. Passive reads stay side-effect free.
The one-time warning now says the next configuration save removes the entries from config.json and names the recovery copy (path redacted with redactUserPath), or says no copy could be made and asks the user to copy config.json now.
The source comment, structure/config.md, and the provider guide in English and the seven translations describe this behaviour.
Before: ocx config set port 10101 --json printed the retirement warning and removed the row from disk with no copy. After: the same command keeps a protected byte-identical copy and the warning tells the user where it is and how to restore it.
Verification
OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun test tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts: 38 pass, 1 POSIX-only skip on Windows (owner-only mode assertion runs on Linux CI). New cases fail on the previous heads: removing write without a copy, unrelated or unprotected occupants at the backup path, live-save path, redacted notice path, passive reads, and real-sleep overlap cases (5 ms overlap -> one copy; 500 ms -> identical protected copies, no temp files).
Exclusive-writer, Windows ACL, tests/cli/cli-config-command.test.ts (9 pass), tests/config/config-opencode-go-upgrade.test.ts (22 pass), live-reconcile focused suites, and provider docs tests (153 pass).
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, file-size ratchet: pass.
Independent review (GPT-6.1 Sol), five rounds; the final round on this head returned PASS with 0 blocking findings. Non-blocking follow-ups: a wording precision note in structure/config.md about the accepted cleanup exception when temp unlink is persistently denied, and native POSIX runtime evidence (covered by Linux CI).
Full bun run test not run locally (shared host under load); PR CI covers gates and import-graph tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
When a normal configuration load finds retired OpenCode Free settings, the original configuration is preserved in a protected recovery copy before a later save removes those settings and related references.
Existing recovery copies are reused only when their contents and protections are verified. Occupied filenames are not overwritten; a unique name is used instead. If preservation fails, a warning advises copying the configuration immediately.
Passive reads disable affected settings in memory without changing the file, creating a backup, or showing a warning.
Documentation
Updated provider guidance across supported languages to explain recovery, save behavior, and the default-provider fallback.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change preserves original configuration bytes in protected recovery copies when reads detect retired opencode-free settings. Passive reads do not create backups or warnings. A later configuration save removes retired entries and references.
The atomic writer supports exclusive raw-byte publication without replacing an existing destination. It checks file identity before publication and during cleanup. Tests cover collisions, replacements, shared files, and publication errors.
Recovery-copy reuse requires matching bytes and verified protection. New copies use unused sibling names. The code checks file identity and link count, and reports when it cannot preserve the original. Windows ACL checks support the protection decision. Tests cover permissions, collisions, concurrent loads, and recovery notices.
Configuration projection and save behavior src/config.ts, src/config/diagnostics.ts, src/config/live-reconcile.ts, src/config/persist-unlocked.ts, src/config/removed-opencode-free.ts, tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/guides/providers.md, structure/config.md
Load and diagnostic paths pass original bytes and the config path to projection logic. Passive reads do not create backups or warnings. A later save removes retired entries and references. Tests and provider guides describe these behaviors.

Docstring Coverage
Docstring coverage is inconclusive: files from earlier reviews still need to be rechecked within the check's analysis limits. Not blocking.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #7800 is the only active directly linked issue. Its coding requirement: an unrelated config write must either keep the retired opencode-free bytes, or state that the write removes them and how to recover. The PR meets the second option. It does not restore the retired service, which the issue does not request.
Evidence at head:
src/config/persist-unlocked.ts: persistConfigUnlocked calls readRawConfigJson("preserve-only") before atomicWriteFile. That read calls projectRemovedOpenCodeFreeSnapshot on a clone with the authoritative { path, bytes }. So the original bytes are preserved before the write that removes the entries.
src/config/removed-opencode-free-backup.ts: backupOriginal reuses a byte-identical protected copy, or publishes an exclusive copy at config.json.pre-opencode-free-removal.bak, or a unique sibling. It uses up to 100 candidates and does not overwrite an occupant. holdsOriginal requires exact bytes, a regular file, one link, stable identity, and owner-only protection (POSIX 0600 with current uid, or the Windows verifier).
preserveRemovedOpenCodeFree: skips passive reads (isPassiveRead). Emits at most one warning per process. The warning names the copy through redactUserPath with restore instructions. If no copy was made, it asks the user to copy config.json now.
src/config/live-reconcile.ts and src/config.ts route the save and load paths through the same projection with the authoritative disk bytes.
tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts covers the normal save, live save, passive reads, collisions, protection, overlap, redaction, and failure paths, per the PR description and the test summary.
Minor wording point, not blocking: the warning text reads "The next configuration save removes them". On ocx config set, the same warning prints during the save that removes them. The requirement is still met. The notice tells the user the entries are removed and where the copy is.
Unresolved uncertainty: I did not read the test file or atomic-write.ts bodies directly. The verdict relies on the reviewed source paths above and the test coverage described in the PR and diff summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes connect to #7800 or support its implementation.
Recovery preservation and disclosure: src/config/removed-opencode-free-backup.ts, src/config/persist-unlocked.ts, src/config.ts, src/config/diagnostics.ts, src/config/live-reconcile.ts, src/config/removed-opencode-free.ts (warning moved out of the load function; return value now reports change).
Protected exclusive publication for the copy: src/config/atomic-write.ts (raw-byte and exclusive mode for atomicWriteFileNoFollow), src/lib/windows-secret-acl.ts (verifySecretPathAcl), src/lib/windows-owner-acl.ts (verifyWindowsPrivateEntriesAsync). These are needed to make the copy owner-only and to publish it without overwrite.
Tests: tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts, tests/config/atomic-write-exclusive.test.ts, tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free-preserve-failure.test.ts. Test-layout entries in scripts/test-layout/layout-config.json, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json register these files.
Documentation: structure/config.md, structure/runtime.md, and the English and seven translated provider guides describe the changed behavior.
I checked the structure/config.md diff. The sentence on independent custom Responses compaction capabilities appears in the same paragraph but is existing text carried through the rewritten line. The PR does not add it. No unrelated functional change is shown in the reviewed evidence.
Unresolved uncertainty: the Windows ACL and atomic-writer changes are judged by their stated purpose in the summaries. I did not inspect their bodies for behavior outside the protected-copy path.

Cache the backup search per config snapshot without bypassing certification.
preserveRemovedOpenCodeFree calls backupOriginal before checking warned, so repeated reads rescan candidates and can publish more copies. Cache the successful path by config path and raw-byte hash. Revalidate the cached path so byte, identity, and ACL protection checks remain active.

Extract the shared PowerShell spawn setup from verifyWindowsPrivateEntriesAsync.
Lines 149-157 copy the environment and argv construction from defaultWindowsOwnerAclRunner (Lines 73-81). The copy includes -ExecutionPolicy Bypass, -EncodedCommand ENCODED_ACL_SCRIPT and the OCX_ACL_PATH_{i} variables. A later change to one copy will not reach the other. This is a security-relevant spawn contract, so divergence is a real risk.
The async verifier also does not go through ownerAclRunner. Tests that call setWindowsOwnerAclRunnerForTests cannot inject a result for the async path. Only a real Windows PowerShell run covers it, as at tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts Line 252.
The async path also skips waitForSubprocessExit and the tracked-work wrappers. The existing async icacls path uses these for bounded exit and reaping. This function relies only on the Bun timeout option and child.exited. Confirm that this meets the bounded-admission contract documented in structure/config.md.
Extract one helper that builds the env and argv for both runners. Optionally add an async runner seam.
Call aclSpawnArgs from both defaultWindowsOwnerAclRunner and verifyWindowsPrivateEntriesAsync.

Make the 5 ms overlap case independent of wall-clock scheduling.
For delay === 5, the test expects one recovery copy. The first process removes its temporary hard link only after the delayed linkSync call returns. The second process has a finite nine-recheck budget, so ordinary descheduling can make it publish a sibling copy and fail the test without a product regression.
Use an explicit signal after the first process unlinks its temporary file. Wait for that signal only in the 5 ms case, with a finite timeout. Keep the 500 ms case on the existing retry budget so it still detects exhaustion.

This is a test-workflow flake, not a product regression. The finite timeout causes the test to fail if cleanup does not occur instead of waiting indefinitely.

Preserve the current config snapshot during import.
ocx config import --yes calls saveConfig(...), but saveConfig uses non-projecting readRawConfigJson(). The current config.json is therefore not passed to preserveRemovedOpenCodeFree before the imported candidate is persisted. The import can remove retired opencode-free bytes without creating the recovery copy or warning the user.
Use the existing projecting mode at this save boundary:

Use the current memo invariant.
The phrase predates this PR, but the edited contract line should use present-tense behavior. ChangeTime changes invalidate the harden memo, while the Windows branch does not call chmod. Separate these facts:
Suggested wording
-its ChangeTime bump is what used to retire the memo.
+Changing ChangeTime invalidates the memo; the Windows path does not call chmod.

Review comment at @structure/runtime.md at line 119:
Update the Windows hardening contract near `reattributeHardenedSecretPath` to
state that changing ChangeTime invalidates the memo and that the Windows path
does not call `chmod`; remove the outdated “used to retire” wording while
preserving the separate facts.

Scope the zero-identity check to exclusive publication.
assertPrivateTempDescriptor rejects zero dev or ino values for every private temporary-file write. This also affects ordinary writes through writePrivateTempFile, writePrivateTempFileWith, and writePrivateTempFileAsync. If the filesystem reports a matching zero identity, the write fails with atomic temporary file identity changed before write.
Keep the check before writing secret bytes, but apply it only when exclusive is enabled. Pass exclusive through the two synchronous private writers. Keep the async writer's default as false, because atomicWriteFileAsync has no exclusive mode.
Add the same optional parameter to the three private writers and pass it to both assertions. Pass exclusive from the synchronous calls at atomicWriteFileToTarget; leave the async call on its default false.

Update assertPrivateTempDescriptor to require nonzero device and inode
identities only when exclusive publication is enabled, while retaining the

… fails
A preservation exception at the save boundary no longer discards the parsed config that the client-state guard and OS-store reference accounting read; the save warns without a path and proceeds.
…tion
Ordinary private temp writes keep working on filesystems that report a zero inode or device; exclusive recovery-copy publication still refuses them.

Review: independent GPT-6.1 Sol rounds (L6 and N1). Two N1 rounds returned MUSTFIX and both were fixed here: saveConfig skipped the recovery copy after a late external opencode-free edit (now preserved at the common save boundary, regression through both save paths), and a preservation exception discarded the parsed snapshot used by the client-state guard and OS-store accounting (now isolated, regression added). The CodeRabbit outside-diff finding on zero temp identity was also fixed (scoped to exclusive publication, regression added). Final security delta review on this exact head, covering the rebase resolution in src/lib/windows-owner-acl.ts against feat(codex): add protected Windows CLI update job storage #7626: PASS, 0 blocking.
PR CI: all 30 checks green on this head.
Conflict check against current dev (100ab90fb6): clean (git merge-tree).

Summary
Fixes #7800. Loading a config that still contains the retired
opencode-freeprovider disables the entry and its dependent references in memory; the source comment claimed this projection never rewritesconfig.json, but the next configuration save (for exampleocx config set port 10101) persisted it and silently removed the row, with no way to get it back. The behaviour now matches the repository's existing precedent for load projections (the OpenCode wire upgrades are persisted by the next explicit edit), is disclosed, and is recoverable:
config.jsonbytes are kept once asconfig.json.pre-opencode-free-removal.bak(or a unique sibling when that name is taken by a different or unprotected file). The copy is written through the existing protected atomic writer, with the same owner-only protection asconfig.json(Windows ACL / POSIX0600) applied before publication; an existing copy is reused only when it is byte-identical and verified owner-only. Overlapping first loads may leave more than one identical protected copy; a copy is never named unless it holds the original bytes and is protected.config.jsonand names the recovery copy (path redacted withredactUserPath), or says no copy could be made and asks the user to copyconfig.jsonnow.structure/config.md, and the provider guide in English and the seven translations describe this behaviour. Before:
ocx config set port 10101 --jsonprinted the retirement warning and removed the row from disk with no copy. After: the same command keeps a protected byte-identical copy and the warning tells the user where it is and how to restore it.Verification
OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun test tests/config/config-removed-opencode-free.test.ts: 38 pass, 1 POSIX-only skip on Windows (owner-only mode assertion runs on Linux CI). New cases fail on the previous heads: removing write without a copy, unrelated or unprotected occupants at the backup path, live-save path, redacted notice path, passive reads, and real-sleep overlap cases (5 ms overlap -> one copy; 500 ms -> identical protected copies, no temp files).tests/cli/cli-config-command.test.ts(9 pass),tests/config/config-opencode-go-upgrade.test.ts(22 pass), live-reconcile focused suites, and provider docs tests (153 pass).bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, file-size ratchet: pass.structure/config.mdabout the accepted cleanup exception when temp unlink is persistently denied, and native POSIX runtime evidence (covered by Linux CI).bun run testnot run locally (shared host under load); PR CI covers gates and import-graph tests.Checklist
