Summary

Codex 0.164 runtime agent instances (openai/codex#55402, openai/codex#55636; features.runtime_agent_instances, off by default) authenticate in two modes. dual_header sends Authorization: Bearer <cred> plus x-openai-agent-assertion: <jwt>. assertion_only sends Authorization: AgentAssertion <jwt> with no bearer.

opencodex read bearers with headers.get("authorization")?.replace(/^Bearer\s+/i, ""), which returns an AgentAssertion <jwt> value unchanged, so the value was treated as an opaque bearer. With a chatgpt-account-id header it counted as a forwardable caller Codex bearer (hasForwardableCodexBearer). On a pooled route the pool account's Bearer silently replaced it. Before this change, an assertion_only request to a pooled /v1/responses reached ChatGPT as Authorization: Bearer <pool token>. It is now refused with HTTP 400 agent_assertion_unsupported, and nothing is sent upstream.

  • One scheme parser. src/lib/authorization-scheme.ts classifies Authorization as bearer, agent assertion, other, or none. Every former replace(/^Bearer\s+/i) site (auth-cors admission and forwarding checks, auth-context, Responses core-auth, audio, GUI session, management auth) now uses authorizationCredential(), which keeps the legacy read for every value except AgentAssertion, which yields no credential. The assertion bytes are never returned by the parser.
  • assertion_only is refused, typed, and fail-closed. The request fetch handler returns HTTP 400 { error: { type: "invalid_request_error", code: "agent_assertion_unsupported" } } before admission, routing, or the Responses WebSocket upgrade. Responses auth and materializeCodexUpstreamAuth/…Async refuse it a second time, so no internal hop can swap in a pool, stored-main, or provider credential. The error body never echoes the header. This PR does not add assertion_only support on pooled routes; that is left for a maintainer decision.
  • dual_header keeps working exactly as today. The Bearer path is unchanged. x-openai-agent-assertion stays outside FORWARD_HEADERS. It is forwarded only on canonical first-party Direct (isCanonicalOpenAiForwardProvider, main context, no substitution), and only when the outbound Bearer is byte-for-byte the original request's Bearer. Pool overrides (HTTP transport and the WS handshake), substituted main credentials, injected Claude-main credentials, routed providers, compact gateways, and sidecars all drop it. Before this PR it was dropped everywhere, including Direct.
  • Redaction. x-openai-agent-assertion is added to the sensitive header keys and colon-label grammar in src/lib/redact.ts, and it is blocked from forwardClientHeaders.
  • Test layout: the three new files are registered in a new explicit shard, scripts/test-layout/layout-agent-assertion.json, because layout.json sits one line under the 2,000-line ratchet cap on dev.
  • Docs: a "Runtime agent instances (Codex 0.164+)" section in the Codex integration guide. Structure note in structure/data-planes/inbound-compat.md.

Auth surface: needs maintainer security review (MAINTAINERS.md).

Verification

  • bun run typecheck: pass.
  • New focused files: tests/lib/authorization-scheme.test.ts (parser, carry rule, typed refusal, redaction of both header forms), tests/server/agent-assertion-auth.test.ts (admission, forwardable-bearer detection, materialization refusal for pool/main/substituted, Direct transport forward, pool override strip, routed/forwardClientHeaders strip, sidecar allowlists, WS handshake), and tests/responses/agent-assertion-routes.test.ts (real server: Direct dual_header forwards Bearer plus assertion; pooled dual_header sends the pool Bearer with no assertion; an admission-key Bearer is replaced by stored main with no assertion; assertion_only refused on pooled, Direct, routed, and remote bind with and without admission, with zero upstream calls; no assertion bytes anywhere under OPENCODEX_HOME afterwards). 20 pass.
  • With only the source wiring reverted (git stash -- src), 9 of those cases fail, including the pooled assertion_only case that reached upstream with the pool Bearer.
  • bun run test:changed: 44754 pass / 108 skip / 0 fail across 2068 files.
  • bun run test (under lockf /tmp/ocx-heavy-test.lock): one failure, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts > "connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart (stored profile=false)". It fails the same way in isolation on a clean origin/dev checkout (46a9e97), so it predates this change (a Desktop model label ordering diff). Everything else passed.
  • bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: pass. bun run structure:check: pass. bun run privacy:scan: pass.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds centralized AgentAssertion authorization parsing, rejects assertion-only requests before credential substitution or routing, and forwards x-openai-agent-assertion only for canonical Direct requests that retain the caller’s Bearer credential. Tests, layout mappings, compatibility notes, and integration documentation cover the behavior.

Comment thread src/server/responses/core-auth.ts Resolved
…ader assertions to Direct

Codex 0.164 runtime agent instances (openai/codex#55402, #55636) can send
Authorization: AgentAssertion <jwt> (assertion_only) or a Bearer plus
x-openai-agent-assertion (dual_header). The legacy replace(/^Bearer\s+/i)
reads passed an AgentAssertion through as an opaque bearer, and a pooled
route then silently replaced it with the pool account's Bearer.

Parse the Authorization scheme in one helper. assertion_only is refused
with a typed 400 agent_assertion_unsupported before admission or routing,
and again in Responses auth and Codex credential materialization.
dual_header keeps its Bearer unchanged; the assertion is forwarded only on
canonical first-party Direct beside the caller's own Bearer and is dropped
for pool overrides, substituted credentials, routed providers and sidecars.
The assertion header is redacted and blocked from forwardClientHeaders.

Security summary (owner-path merge; no maintainer security review is available).

What changed: a single Authorization-scheme parser (src/lib/authorization-scheme.ts) replaces every replace(/^Bearer\s+/i, "") site (auth-cors admission, core-auth, management-auth, gui-session, the audio paths, ws-bridge and the Responses transport). An AgentAssertion <jwt> value yields no credential and its bytes are never returned. Codex 0.164 runtime assertion_only requests are refused with a typed error on pooled and routed routes. For dual_header, the Bearer is used exactly as before, and x-openai-agent-assertion is forwarded only on first-party OpenAI Direct passthrough and stripped elsewhere. src/lib/redact.ts covers the assertion JWT.

Threats considered:

  • A silent credential swap, reproduced on dev before this fix: an AgentAssertion request on a pooled route reached ChatGPT carrying the pool account's Bearer. It is now refused.
  • An assertion counted as a forwardable caller credential when chatgpt-account-id was present: now impossible.
  • An assertion leaking to third-party or routed upstreams through header forwarding: it is stripped.
  • JWT exposure in logs, diagnostics or error bodies: redacted.
  • Admission secrets: an assertion is never compared as a proxy secret.
  • Scope: assertion_only support on pooled routes is intentionally NOT implemented (that product decision is pending), and refusal is fail-closed with no fallback.

Tests: tests/lib/authorization-scheme.test.ts, tests/server/agent-assertion-auth.test.ts and tests/responses/agent-assertion-routes.test.ts cover both modes on admission, Direct, pooled, routed and sidecar paths, plus redaction. With the wiring reverted, 9 cases fail. CI is green on 981cfeae1b655ada53b5c87b7aecabab1e12b5b0 (all 30 checks), and privacy:scan passes.

…ils (#7469)

* fix(chat): carry Anthropic thinking signatures through reasoning_details (#7429)

Chat Completions clients routed to Claude echoed only reasoning_content, so
every tool step reached Anthropic without the signed thinking block it
requires and the adapter dropped the reasoning.

Return provider-issued thinking state as OpenRouter-style reasoning_details
(reasoning.text with signature, reasoning.encrypted for redacted blocks) on
the bridge converter and the direct encoder, streaming and not, including
Opus progress updates. Accept the entries back only for a single
first-party Anthropic route; anything malformed or any other destination
keeps today's plaintext projection byte for byte.

Fixes #7429

* fix(chat): replay progress content as sent and narrow the fallback claim (#7429)

Review: the Chat wire carries no marker that tells an Opus progress copy
from answer text, so stripping a signed-text prefix from content could cut
a real answer that begins with a signed thought. Replay content as the
client sent it (today's behavior) and only add the signed block.

Document that validation is structural: malformed entries fall back to
reasoning_content, while an edited text or signature is forwarded and
Anthropic refuses it.

* test(chat): cover the pooled OAuth Anthropic route in the #7429 round trip

Review: every replay case used an API key. A Claude subscription reaches the
same first-party host with a pooled OAuth account, so run the three-step tool
loop there too.

* test(layout): keep the reasoning-details entry on its sibling line

A new line in scripts/test-layout/layout.json reached 2000 lines on current dev
and tripped the file-size ratchet (NEW_OVERSIZED).

* docs(structure): move the #7429 reasoning_details section into its own data-plane doc

With #7470 on dev, the section pushed structure/data-planes/inbound-compat.md to
606 lines, over the 600-line budget. Move it to
structure/data-planes/chat-reasoning-details.md (owner of
