Summary

Anthropic prompt caches now default to the 1-hour TTL on first-party Anthropic. Before this change, an unset cacheRetention meant the 5-minute TTL. Agentic Codex turns often pause for more than 5 minutes, so the cache expired and the next turn rewrote the whole prefix at 1.25x. A 1-hour write costs 2x base input instead of 1.25x, so it pays for itself the first time the cache is reused after a pause longer than 5 minutes. #7294 has workload measurements: 13% less quota over two weeks, and a 7-minute pause on a 515k-token chat read 513k tokens from cache instead of rewriting them.

Closes #7294

Behavior when cacheRetention is unset

Path Before After
Translated Responses → Anthropic adapter, api.anthropic.com (API key, anthropic/anthropic2 OAuth pools) 5m 1h
Native /v1/messages passthrough to api.anthropic.com, caller breakpoints without ttl forwarded as sent (5m) upgraded to 1h, unless the caller pins any breakpoint to "5m"; then the body is forwarded unchanged
Translated /v1/messages lane 1h only if every caller breakpoint was 1h all-1h → long; any explicit 5m → short; otherwise the destination default (1h)
Anthropic-compatible endpoints on the anthropic adapter (Xiaomi, AgentRouter, Umans, Cloudflare AI Gateway, key-provider /anthropic surfaces, custom) 5m 5m, unchanged

An explicit "none", "short" or "long" still wins on every path. No config save path writes cacheRetention, so "unset" really is unset and an explicitly saved "short" is respected (the concern raised in #7294).

Decisions made autonomously (HOTL)

  • Scope: all first-party Anthropic traffic, API key included. Default Anthropic cacheRetention to 1 hour for OAuth (subscription) accounts #7294 proposed OAuth only. This follows the maintainer's direction to apply 1h on every Anthropic path. API-key users who want 5m set cacheRetention: "short".
  • Compatible endpoints and Zed stay 5m. None of them documents ttl: "1h". An unknown TTL there is either rejected (400) or billed on terms we cannot see. Zed borrows the api.anthropic.com body builder but sends to its own gateway, so it explicitly keeps the 5m default and now honors an explicit cacheRetention. Bedrock and Vertex have no Anthropic-wire route in this repository, so there was nothing to change for them. The default lives in one helper (src/adapters/anthropic/cache-retention.ts), keyed on the same first-party check used for credentials and betas.
  • TTL ordering stays valid. On the native lane, any explicit non-1h TTL leaves the body untouched, so a 1h breakpoint never lands after a 5m one. The adapter path still runs normalizeTtlOrdering.
  • Pricing. Anthropic reports usage.cache_creation.ephemeral_1h_input_tokens. It is carried as OcxUsage.cacheCreation1hInputTokens (a subset of cache writes), persisted in the usage log, summed by request-log, retry-guard, image-loop and combo-summary merges, parsed from claude-cli stream usage and from Responses usage (input_tokens_details.cache_write_1h_tokens), and priced at 1.6x the 5m write rate. That equals 2x base input on every Anthropic row, follows the fast-mode and long-context multipliers, and keeps free-write rows free. Without the split, the old 5m pricing applies. The translated Messages lane returns the split to Claude clients as cache_creation.
  • The Lab cache.retention behavior row now reports the effective TTL, so first-party Anthropic routes get a new compatibility fingerprint once.

Switching TTL makes each open conversation write its cache once more, because 5m and 1h entries are stored separately. The docs say this.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck: pass
  • bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan: pass
  • Focused tests: tests/adapters/adapter-usage.test.ts (1h default on api.anthropic.com, 5m on compatible hosts, explicit short/long/none win, 1h usage parsing), tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-messages-passthrough.test.ts (native upgrade, 5m pin respected, schema cache_control untouched, copy-on-write), tests/claude-integration/claude-translated-cache-ttl.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-outbound.test.ts (1h split round trip), tests/usage/usage-cost.test.ts (1h pricing and clamp). Updated expectations in messages-native-oauth, claude-translated-server-tools, anthropic-reasoning and anthropic-client-identity now expect the 1h wire.
  • bun scripts/test.ts over tests/{server,responses,providers,oauth,e2e-style,images,claude-integration,adapters,bridge,codex-integration}: 33,511 tests, 1 failure. claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts > connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart also fails on the parent commit, so it is unrelated to this change.
  • After the review fixes: bun scripts/test.ts tests/{providers,usage,adapters,responses} plus request-log: 18,006 tests. Four chat-completions-endpoint cases timed out under parallel load and pass when that file runs alone (122/122).
  • bun scripts/test.ts over tests/{usage,routing,lab} plus the Claude and Anthropic directories: the only failures were the two tests whose expectations are updated above, plus the same Desktop hub test.
  • Independent reviews: GPT-6.1-Sol (round 1) found three issues: the 1h share was dropped in the image-loop usage merge, the 1h split was lost on the translated Messages output, and one test still expected 5m. Gemini 4 Argon (round 1) found five more: the Responses usage parser and native steering log dropped the 1h field, the Zed delegate treated its gateway as first-party, claude-cli usage ignored the split, the combo summary projection omitted it, and input_examples was walked as a breakpoint container. All are fixed, with regression tests in zed-hosted-provider, codebuddy-protocol, usage-shape-extraction and anthropic-messages-passthrough. GPT-6.1-Sol (round 2, full diff) confirmed the round-1 fixes and found one more gap: the Responses passthrough parser kept cache_write_1h_tokens only in raw usage. That is fixed with a streaming round-trip test in responses-usage-passthrough.
  • Full macOS/Windows CI is left to the release-line workflow per policy.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (docs-site providers reference in EN plus 7 locales, structure/ owner docs)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (No auth or credential changes; billing default change is documented, and explicit config overrides it.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Anthropic’s first-party API now defaults to a one-hour prompt-cache retention; other Anthropic-compatible endpoints default to five minutes. Explicit settings and caller-specified TTLs continue to take precedence.
    • Usage reports now distinguish one-hour cache writes from five-minute writes, with the one-hour portion priced at its corresponding rate.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration guidance to explain endpoint-specific cache defaults and cache-write usage reporting.

Unset cacheRetention now resolves to long (ttl 1h) for api.anthropic.com (API key and OAuth pools) on the translated adapter, the native /v1/messages passthrough, and the translated /v1/messages lane. Anthropic-compatible endpoints keep 5m. Explicit config and caller-pinned 5m breakpoints still win. 1h cache writes reported by Anthropic are priced at 2x base input.

📝 Walkthrough

Anthropic cache retention now defaults by destination, and native and translated requests apply caller TTLs and explicit settings according to the updated rules. Usage handling preserves the one-hour cache-write count through normalization and aggregation, and cost calculation prices it separately.

The new one-hour cache default is applied inconsistently on native Anthropic passthrough. Requests that pin a 5-minute TTL at the top level can be silently upgraded to one-hour caching, which costs more per cache write, or lose top-level caching entirely. Requests sent with the caller's own Anthropic key do not receive the new default at all. Both are small, localized fixes that should land before merge.

Explanation

Issue #7294 requires an unset cacheRetention to use 1 hour for OAuth/subscription Anthropic accounts and to keep 5 minutes for API-key providers. The PR implements defaultAnthropicCacheRetention in src/adapters/anthropic/cache-retention.ts so every first-party Anthropic credential, including API-key traffic, returns "long"; the function does not distinguish OAuth from API-key authentication. The PR description and updated tests also confirm the API-key behavior. Explicit retention values still take precedence, and the cache-rewrite documentation requirement is addressed.

Resolution

Change the unset-retention decision in src/adapters/anthropic/cache-retention.ts to return "long" only for first-party OAuth/subscription traffic and "short" for first-party API-key traffic. Update the related API-key tests and provider documentation. Keep explicit "short" and "long" overrides unchanged.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change that upgrades unset first-party API-key traffic to a 1-hour cache is outside issue #7294. The issue specifically limits the new default to OAuth/subscription accounts and requires API-key providers to retain 5 minutes. This behavior is implemented in src/adapters/anthropic/cache-retention.ts and is reflected in the API-key expectations in tests/adapters/adapter-usage.test.ts. The usage accounting, pricing, passthrough handling, tests, and documentation for the requested OAuth behavior are connected supporting changes; the API-key expansion is the demonstrated out-of-scope change.

Resolution

Remove the API-key expansion. Resolve an unset first-party API-key retention to "short", then revise the associated tests and documentation so only OAuth/subscription first-party traffic defaults to "long".

P2 Badge Preserve the 1-hour write counter across Responses passthrough

When a Responses upstream—such as another OpenCodex instance—returns input_tokens_details.cache_write_1h_tokens, src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts retains it only in rawUsage and never populates cacheCreation1hInputTokens. Filtering the raw key here therefore removes it from the rebuilt response, causing downstream clients and cost accounting to treat the entire write as the cheaper 5-minute tier. Parse the field into the canonical usage property before excluding it from rawInputDetails.

Preserve top-level cache_control before applying the native TTL default.

anthropicMessagesPassthroughBody omits cache_control from ANTHROPIC_MESSAGES_PASSTHROUGH_FIELDS. As a result, the new call at Line 298 cannot see a caller's top-level ttl: "5m". If that request also has a TTL-less system breakpoint, the helper changes the system breakpoint to "1h" instead of leaving the caller's mixed-TTL request unchanged. A request with only top-level automatic caching loses its breakpoint entirely. Add cache_control to the allowlist and cover both cases in the native passthrough tests. Anthropic documents top-level automatic caching as a Messages request field. Apply the native cache-TTL default to caller-credential passthrough.

wantsNativePassthrough accepts first-party sk-ant-* credentials and sends the projected body directly through anthropicNativePassthrough. That function does not call applyAnthropicNativeCacheTtlDefault, so TTL-less breakpoints remain at Anthropic’s 5-minute default. The same bypass affects /v1/messages/count_tokens.

Apply the existing helper inside anthropicNativePassthrough after resolving retention from the actual destination. Use the transformed body for both paths. Preserve explicit breakpoint TTLs, configured cacheRetention, and the 5-minute default for Anthropic-compatible endpoints.
