Summary

  • Native Chat can materialize cached reasoning before the request-copy budget is checked. Preflight the exact escaped-JSON size and reserve translator budget before copying messages or serializing the request.
  • Preserve the existing 413 translation_buffer_limit response, caller objects, and retry/key-rotation release and rebuild behavior. History is not truncated.
  • Keep synthetic boundary, escaping, replacement, nonmutation and budget-release regressions; document the accounting boundary.

Verification

Implementation validation at parent 0d7325bb89b492f637f17715d8499d19868f9e59 with Bun 1.4.3 (production/test files unchanged in this documentation follow-up):

  • bun scripts/test.ts tests/responses/chat-native-reasoning-scope.test.ts: 14 pass / 0 fail / 68 assertions, with exit 0 reported by the runner itself.
  • bun node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --noEmit, bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts, and git diff --check: passed.
  • Official scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts helpers countLines, loadBaseline, evaluate and isOffender, using tests/fixtures/file-size-baseline.json, passed for the six changed paths only: 6 NEW_OK / 0 offenders (PASS_SCOPED). This is not a global ratchet result.

The full local suite and changed-import-graph suite were not run. Local evidence covers the owning regression and the separately scoped static checks. Broader coverage is provided by the completed current-head hosted CI instead of repeating a full suite locally across this multi-candidate batch. The global file-size ratchet and external live-provider behavior remain unverified. No GUI changes.

Parent-head hosted CI at 0d7325bb89b492f637f17715d8499d19868f9e59: Cross-platform CI 39155195262 completed successfully, including test 1/4, test 2/4, test 3/4, test 4/4, gates and ci. This is parent evidence, not a result for the new head. Skipped jobs are not executed platform validation.

Documentation follow-up at f67cef70178d208ebec051815b57a5c5f415f55b:

  • Clarify the existing order: check the final escaped-JSON size against the fixed serialized-request cap, then reserve that full size as transient request_copies before applying changed replay and serializing. Release the reservation in finally.
  • Exact two-document privacy scanText and structure manifest/index/line-budget checks passed PASS_SCOPED / exit 0; the diff check passed. These are not full privacy/structure CLI or global gate results.
  • Production and test files are unchanged. The existing 14 pass / 68 assertions were not rerun; no new tests were added.

Current-head hosted CI at f67cef70178d208ebec051815b57a5c5f415f55b: Cross-platform CI 39158248654 completed successfully, including test 1/4, test 2/4, test 3/4, test 4/4, gates and ci. Skipped jobs are not executed platform validation.

This PR is ready for maintainer review with the documentation follow-up CI completed successfully. Maintainer security review and any required merge approvals remain pending before merge.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.
  • CI passes on the current head f67cef70178d208ebec051815b57a5c5f415f55b.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Requests that include replayed reasoning are now checked against the translation-buffer limit before being sent. If the expanded request exceeds the limit, it returns a 413 error rather than truncating conversation history.
    • Request size checks account for the final serialized content, including replacements that change the size of existing reasoning values.
    • Requests are also checked against the available translation budget during replay, helping prevent oversized requests from exceeding processing limits.

Preflight escaped-JSON size and reserve translator budget before materializing native Chat reasoning replay. Preserve existing budget errors, caller objects and retry/key-rotation ownership; retain synthetic regressions and update accounting contracts.

📝 Walkthrough

Native Chat reasoning replay now uses a preflight plan to measure escaped JSON size changes before rewriting messages. Request construction checks the base request and replay against byte limits, uses transient translator-budget capacity when supplied, and releases that capacity after serialization.

Changes: Native Chat reasoning replay

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan and measure reasoning replay
src/adapters/openai-chat/reasoning-replay.ts, tests/responses/chat-native-reasoning-scope.test.ts
The planner selects eligible messages and calculates net serialized-byte changes before applying rewrites. Tests cover request-size boundaries, existing reasoning values, and unchanged budget usage on preflight failure.
Enforce limits in request construction
src/adapters/openai-chat/passthrough.ts, src/server/chat-native.ts, structure/data-planes/inbound-compat.md, structure/transports/byte-accounting.md
The passthrough checks the base request and replay against byte limits, reserves transient capacity when a translator budget is supplied, and releases it after serialization. The server passes the budget, and the documentation describes over-limit handling and the retry and key-rotation lifecycle.

Distinguish the fixed serialized-request cap from the full final-size transient translator reservation. Document changed-replay ordering and finally release without changing production or test behavior.

Correctness approval at f67cef7 (current dev base 8640c2f). Replay measures escaped JSON net growth before copying, handles zero/negative deltas, and reserves the complete changed request against the remaining translator budget before serialization.

Independent Linux/Bun 1.4.3 focused regression: 14 passed, 0 failed in fresh homes under the documented cgroup limits. Current-head Cross-platform CI 39158248654 is successful, including the root Typecheck in gates and all four Ubuntu test shards. Broader Ubuntu validation is supplied by the hosted checks; the full local suite was not run under this host's resource cap. This is not macOS/Windows runtime certification. Mapped contract changes and the focused tests agree. No merge or workflow dispatch performed.
