Summary

Grok coupon operations share the existing cross-process config mutation transaction and claim open → attempted before their irreversible redemption. The streamed atomic writer fsyncs the temporary file; the coupon ledger also requires a successful POSIX parent-directory fsync before dispatch. Flush failure refuses the spend even if the renamed claim is already visible. Windows retains mandatory file flush and the shared writer's directory-flush platform limitation. New writes use ledger version 2; legacy version-1 open and unconfirmed redeem_failed records are quarantined, while definitive results retain their replay. Corrupt/unavailable ledgers refuse without discarding records. Retention remains bounded to 30 days.

Settlement checks expected state, account and token under the same transaction. A delayed preflight refusal returns operation_state_changed rather than replacing an attempted or terminal winner. Both coupon RPCs require an explicit valid gRPC status trailer; HTTP 200 alone cannot confirm success. After one confirmed redemption, only a ConfigMutationLockError caused by SQLITE_BUSY permits up to five local settlement attempts and four 20 ms waits. Changed claims and other errors stop immediately. RedeemReset is never retried.

Unknown redemption responses return 502 attempt_unresolved with the effective operation ID. The CLI mints its ID before sending and preserves same-ID guidance even when the entire response is lost. The dashboard holds uncertain/pending attempts in its account controller across modal close/reopen while mounted; availability refreshes use GET only. A listed or missing coupon cannot establish the original operation's success. Explicit replayed failures remain failures. The existing unknown-outcome copy is corrected in all eleven GUI locales, and eight management API locales plus the owning structure contracts describe the workflow.

Supplied token IDs are validated before journaling. Executable same-ID retries reuse the recorded token, and omitted-account retries recover the retained operation's original account before OAuth lookup. Definitive failures release only the matching speculative GUI hold; actual unknown outcomes keep their recovery hold.

Grok/Link writers remain separately submitted in #6869. Codex/agent-settings coordination already merged in #6811 is unchanged. The original contributor credit is retained once in this submission's commit series.

Current head: df5b0751282b66ca7f24d552b1c498db5ae84719; tree: 9371033ab38ff6ea5dbe844e319c8de0d59aa20d. Reviewed identity base remains d25391ddccb0d9d03128ea5f9bc734e904c84e24. The installed immutable policy and actual normal-push hook passed all six submission commits. Existing pinned Bun 1.4.0 and dependencies were reused; no local installation or settings change was made.

  • Focused coupon/CLI regressions: 75 pass / 0 fail. Seven malformed-token cases refuse before ledger creation and leave subsequent valid requests usable. An open operation with recorded token A still redeems A when a token-less retry sees B first. An actual CLI-entry regression changes the active account after uncertainty, then proves the same-ID omitted-account retry recovers the original account without a second redemption.
  • Import-connected xAI coverage relative to the previous published head: 200 pass / 0 fail. Focused GUI: 18 pass / 0 fail, including the three definitive-error cases after pending close/reopen.
  • Exact committed-head full GUI: 3,032 pass / 0 fail, using bun test --isolate --timeout=60000 tests. Typecheck, privacy, structure, GUI lint/i18n lint/build, docs build and all 28 layout/file-size checks passed on the final candidate contents. All eight management API locales document retry identity and definitive/unknown holds.
  • Current-build actual-App Firefox 153.0 verification passed with synthetic APIs: reconfirming while pending sends no second POST; a definitive failure releases its matching hold; another explicitly confirmed attempt gets a new operation ID. Zero page errors and zero unhandled API paths. No real coupon was consumed.
  • Browser used the cached official binary, its default sandbox and no custom arguments/preferences. Normal process execution outside the shell filesystem wrapper was required because the wrapper makes /proc/self/uid_map read-only.
  • New-head remote checks: Cross-platform CI passed, attempt 1: four Linux shards 43,982 pass / 0 fail / 137 skip, nine Windows shards 43,551 pass / 0 fail / 613 skip, hosted GUI 3,032 pass / 0 fail. All shards inspected merge commit c0361fc21b52c1ab4956dc8a0f59176c9df8b81f, parents tested dev a47a1b52a94ef3d65d8435944bd4e6bf34a2e622 and this HEAD, tree 3ea27c37d097762848a2f2a604ce6bf9570d927a, matching the clean local static merge. React Doctor, hygiene, label and target/description checks passed. Hosted macOS was not selected. Prior-head successes remain historical evidence.
  • Upstream freshness: after these runs, dev advanced three commits to 04861658a9ba3cb4fef38f587aec3d9fe74d01b7. Both follow-up heads merge statically without conflict with that tip. The completed CI inspected the a47a1b52… merge base recorded above; the newer upstream delta was not executed locally or included in those runs. No rebase or identity-policy change was made.
  • Not run locally: full root suite and native Windows/macOS. Focused/import-connected local coverage uses the documented resource exception. Earlier unchanged Claude/Codex/listener failures reproduced on the reviewed base under unsafe system temporary-directory ownership and fixture-mode differences; the literal non-isolated GUI run also failed on an unchanged shared React global. These are recorded separately and are not passing evidence. No security/permission settings were changed. The new-head hosted Linux and Windows results above establish current coverage; macOS remains unselected.
  • Manual author security review covers pre-journal validation, retained account/token binding, the unchanged authenticated management gate, claim-before-dispatch, non-retryable redemption, preserved unknown identity and no additional secret logging. Windows durability limits remain as stated in Summary. No paid Cloud scan was run; maintainer approval and security review remain separate.

Current-head capture shows the complete actual dashboard with clearly labeled synthetic test data and mocked API responses. No actual user installation or real account was accessed, and no real coupon was consumed. The image is on the separate assets branch.

Synthetic dashboard: definitive failure releases the matching hold

Earlier actual-App checks of unknown outcomes and confirmed success remain linked as historical behavior evidence: unknown missing coupon, confirmed success.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Author security review covered secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Explicit maintainer security review remains pending before merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Uncertain Grok coupon redemptions are not automatically retried, helping prevent duplicate exchanges. The same operation ID is retained for recovery.
    • Redemptions are confirmed only when the upstream response provides a valid success status.
    • The dashboard preserves unresolved attempts across dialog reopenings and avoids sending another redemption during follow-up checks.
    • Definitive failures release temporary redemption holds so another attempt can be made.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Grok coupon API and recovery guidance across supported languages, including clearer explanations of unresolved outcomes and retry behavior.

…pending

Persist one winning attempt before transport. Keep uncertain outcomes replay-only, refuse unreadable ledgers, replay existing records at capacity, and synchronize the route contracts and regression fixtures.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Grok reset-coupon consumption now records attempts before redemption, validates upstream status trailers, and reuses operation IDs for uncertain outcomes. The ledger, route, clients, tests, and documentation now share these attempt and retry rules.

Changes

Grok Coupon Redemption

Layer / File(s) Summary
Upstream status checks
src/grok/reset-coupons.ts, tests/providers/xai/grok-reset-coupons.test.ts
Coupon inspection and redemption now require a valid raw grpc-status trailer. Tests cover missing, malformed, unsafe, and successful status values.
Ledger state and settlement
src/grok/reset-coupon-ledger.ts, tests/config/*, tests/providers/xai/grok-coupon-claim.test.ts
The ledger now uses version 2, tracks attempted operations, migrates uncertain legacy records, enforces identity and state checks, prunes records after 30 days, and uses locked atomic settlement.
Route retry and client state
src/server/management/grok-coupon-routes.ts, src/cli/account-auth.ts, gui/src/hooks/useGrokResetCoupons.ts, gui/src/components/provider-workspace/GrokResetCoupons.tsx, gui/src/i18n/*, tests/providers/xai/grok-coupon-reconcile.test.ts, gui/tests/grok-reset-coupons.test.tsx
The route prevents duplicate redemption, reconciles uncertain attempts without redispatch, and bounds settlement retries. The CLI and GUI retain operation IDs and prevent duplicate requests.
Documentation and structure
docs-site/src/content/docs/*/reference/management-api.md, structure/*, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Documentation and structure references now describe error codes, retry rules, ledger lifecycle, and dashboard or CLI recovery behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 31822

The change makes coupon redemption safer against double-spending. One open edge case remains: an explicit upstream rejection is reported as unresolved instead of as a definitive failure, which can leave that operation blocked. The workaround is to start a new operation. The change is mergeable with owner awareness of this follow-up.

Retry only local settlement for ConfigMutationLockError caused by SQLITE_BUSY, with five attempts and four short waits. Preserve changed-claim and terminal guards, stop on other errors, and never repeat redemption. Cover real process contention, exhaustion, refusal classes and identity drift; clarify structure contracts and repair the garbled separator.
Flush coupon claims before dispatch, quarantine ambiguous version-one records,
and retain unknown attempts across CLI errors and dashboard dialog reopen.
Keep remaining-coupon availability separate from redemption confirmation.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set explicit invalid-token gRPC failures to failed.

This finding applies to the explicit grpc-status:3 invalid-token response. redeemGrokResetCoupon throws GrpcWebError, but the route treats it as transport uncertainty and leaves the claimed record as attempted. Later requests return attempt_unresolved and never dispatch another redemption, so a definitive rejection becomes an unretryable unresolved operation.

Handle this definitive GrpcWebError separately, settle attempted to failed, and return the established failure response. Keep transport, missing-status, malformed-status, and other statuses unresolved unless the endpoint contract proves them definitive. Extend GrokResetCouponSettlement to allow status: "failed" with expectedStatus: "attempted".

A settlement race that returns operation_state_changed left the GUI and CLI
treating the redemption as definitively failed, dropping the hold and the
operation id the user needs to inspect the attempt. Treat it like the other
unresolved codes. The coupon modal now reads uncertainty only from the
controller, so a reopened modal clears once the original request is confirmed.

Adds GUI and CLI regressions for both paths.

Maintainer review follow-up pushed as 6434bbb on this branch.

  • operation_state_changed is now treated as an unresolved outcome in both the GUI hook and ocx ... --consume, so the hold and the operation id needed to inspect the attempt are kept instead of being dropped as a definitive failure.
  • The coupon modal reads uncertainty only from the controller, so reopening it after the original request is confirmed no longer shows "unknown".

Regressions for both paths were added (they failed before the change: CLI 1, GUI 3). Local checks on the branch: typecheck, ratchet/layout, coupon CLI/claim tests, GUI tsc + isolated coupon tests, GUI build, privacy and structure checks all pass. All redemption tests are mocked.

…sals

A preflight refusal that lost a race to a concurrent definitive outcome
returned operation_state_changed, which the GUI and CLI now hold as an
unresolved attempt; the hold could never clear because the operation was
already final. The refusal now settles or inspects the ledger inside one
config mutation transaction and replays the definitive winner when account
and token match; genuinely unresolved states still return
operation_state_changed. The GUI retires the active attempt as soon as an
outcome is definitive, before awaiting the refresh, so a reopened modal cannot
recreate a hold.
A request that lost the atomic open -> attempted claim always answered
attempt_in_progress, even when the winning request had already settled, which
left the dashboard holding a finished operation. A lost claim now reads the
durable winner and replays a matching definitive outcome with the same
response as a late refusal; unresolved or mismatched operations, and a failed
read of the winner, still return attempt_in_progress so no caller is told it
may open a replacement operation.
@lidge-jun

Further maintainer follow-ups after independent review (head now 7939cf4):

  • c03080a: a preflight refusal that loses a race to a concurrent definitive outcome now replays that durable winner (HTTP 200, replayed: true) instead of operation_state_changed, which the dashboard would otherwise hold forever; the GUI retires the active attempt as soon as an outcome is definitive, before the refresh GET.
  • 7939cf4: a request that loses the atomic claim does the same; unresolved or identity-mismatched operations, and a failed read of the winner, still return attempt_in_progress so nobody is told to open a replacement operation.

Regressions (backend, GUI, fault injection) failed before each change. An independent review on a merge with current dev found no remaining defects: typecheck, 126 coupon/config-lock tests, GUI tsc + 23 isolated tests, structure and privacy checks; no live redemption.

Merged as d49df2f7b9 (squash of head 318224a5543f6d0d154e8e7969a6a7a4d425853b). Thank you @luvs01.

How the decision was made. This PR changes irreversible coupon spending, so the merge was decided by two-round PRO/CON review. The rule was fixed before review: merge only if the adversarial side leaves no unrefuted P0/P1, the head is unchanged, and CI passed on that head. In round 2 the adversarial reviewer moved to MERGE. Runs on dev and on this head under identical schedules show the head is equal or safer in every scenario tested. For example, under a contended claim, dev sends three redemption dispatches and this head sends two. One finding was rated P1 (N1 below). It already exists on dev and is unchanged here.

Verification.

  • Squash parent is 03b865e273, and its tree equals the locally validated union 23d28bcac1.
  • On that union: 154/0 backend, config-lock, test-layout and ratchet tests; 23/0 GUI coupon tests; root and GUI tsc clean.
  • Exact-head Cross-platform CI 38046992319 succeeded (26 success; 7 skipped by the changes filter).
  • All tests used mocked upstreams. No live redemption was performed.

Follow-ups, not blockers under the agreed rule. Each affected the safety contract this PR introduces, and none is a regression against dev:

  • B1–B3: three post-open error paths still return codes that the GUI/CLI treat as definitive, so the client releases its hold and can open a replacement operation. The three paths are a contended claim mark, a contended late-refusal record, and a remaining-resets read failure. These paths should return the uncertain attempt_in_progress/operation_state_changed contract with operationId, and the GUI/CLI lists should include them.
  • N1: the GUI hold is lost when the provider panel unmounts and remounts. This also happens on dev.
  • H1/H2 (hardening): reject ledger records that are attempted but carry a code, and refuse conflicting duplicate grpc-status trailers.

These will be tracked separately. A revert would not undo coupons that were already spent, which is why the fixes go forward.
