Summary

Closes #6334. Carries and refines #6422 by @sungyongcho.

An account that holds ChatGPT credits is not refused by upstream when a usage window reaches 100%. Upstream keeps serving the request and draws the credit balance. Selection only moves off an account after a refusal, so such an account kept spending credits while other pool accounts still had included usage. #6422 added a per-account switch whose default kept that behavior. This PR flips the default: an account at 100% is switched out and comes back after its reset, and spending credits is opt-in.

  • Default. An account whose weekly (or monthly) window or 5-hour window is full is skipped by selection until the reset. When every account is full, selection finds none and the request is refused until a reset, so credits are never spent. The main login is refused like a hard-lock refusal, with the same reset time. The full-window rule, the hold points in selection.ts, routing.ts and auth-context.ts, and the credits_off block reason come from feat(codex): let an account stop at its usage limit instead of spending ChatGPT credits #6422 unchanged.
  • Storage. creditCodexAccountIds lists the accounts, __main__ included, that may keep serving from credits. Absence means none, so an existing install switches at 100% after upgrading, and a newly added account starts off. This replaces feat(codex): let an account stop at its usage limit instead of spending ChatGPT credits #6422's opt-out list noCreditCodexAccountIds, which never shipped.
  • Dashboard. The Codex Auth header gets one global Use credits switch next to the existing Codex credits display switch. Its state comes from the accounts: off when none may spend, mixed when some may, on when all may. This matches the quota auto-refresh control on the same page, and clicking from off or mixed allows every account. Each account's own Use credits after limit switch sits in that card's ⋯ menu, next to Copy account ID and Edit alias; the main card gets the same ⋯ menu for its switch. Collapsed cards look as before, except that an account allowed to spend shows a Uses credits badge. The display switch still only shows balances and never changes routing.
  • API. PUT /api/codex-auth/accounts/credits still takes { id, creditsAfterLimit } and now also takes { all } for the global switch: true lists __main__ and every pool account, false clears the list. There is still no CLI verb (deferred-verb); ocx config set creditCodexAccountIds covers scripted use.
  • Docs: the configuration reference row, the management API row, the Codex integration guide paragraph, and structure/codex-account-controls.md. Strings are updated in all ten locales.

Behavior change to call out in the release notes: pools that relied on credits being spent past 100% now switch accounts or stop at 100% until a user turns on Use credits.

Co-authored-by: Sungyong Cho dev@sungyongcho.com

Verification

  • tests/codex-integration/codex-credits-after-limit.test.ts and -main.test.ts were rewritten for the opt-in default: by default a 100% account is skipped and reports credits_off; an allowed account keeps serving; a bound thread leaves when its account is turned off; with every account full, selection finds none; elapsed resets and readings without a reset time do not hold; only allowed ids are stored; the global setter; the route for one account, __main__, { all }, bad ids, unknown ids, and non-boolean values. The main-login tests cover the refusal, an explicit main request, the pool moving off main, the caller's own main credential (with physical auth reads forbidden), and the release on reset. 23 pass.
  • GUI: gui/tests/codex-credit-spend.test.tsx (default off, off/mixed/on, card badges, the switch inside each card's ⋯ menu, global and per-account clicks, a pending write blocking both) and a controller test for the global write in codex-account-pool-behaviour.test.tsx; the full GUI suite cd gui && bun test --isolate tests passes (2,756 pass, 0 fail). Two existing tests had selectors that the new switch also matched (the custom-threshold toggle lookup and the ⋯ finder in chooseOrder); they are scoped to their own control now. bun run lint, lint:i18n, and build pass.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • bun run test:changed against dev: 28,201 pass, 71 skip, 20 fail. Rerun alone, 17 of those pass. The remaining 3 (update-restart-lease, native-codex-toggle, injection-model-suggest-routes) fail the same way on a clean dev checkout on this machine, because an ocx service is installed here. tests/codex-integration and tests/routing were also run in full. The full bun run test was not run locally because of concurrent worktrees on this machine; hosted CI covers it.
  • Manual: the built dashboard on a separate proxy (throwaway OPENCODEX_HOME, port 10199) with three fictional pool accounts, one at 100% weekly. Clicking the global switch through mixed → all on → all off, and one account's switch in its ⋯ menu, showed the right state and message each time, and creditCodexAccountIds in the saved config matched. Not verified: live upstream behavior with a real account holding credits.

Screenshot (fictional accounts; one pool card's ⋯ menu is open, the third account is allowed to spend, and the header switch is mixed):

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. The route keeps feat(codex): let an account stop at its usage limit instead of spending ChatGPT credits #6422's management auth and id validation; auth-context.ts changes only which list the main-account check reads, and it still reads the in-memory policy quota, never the physical auth file. The new default spends less, never more.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added per-account and global controls for allowing Codex to use ChatGPT credits after an account reaches its usage limit. These settings are off by default, including for new accounts.
    • Accounts without credit use enabled are skipped until their usage window resets. Main-account requests are refused during that time, and no account is selected if no alternative is available.
    • The main account’s hard lock still applies, even when credit use is enabled.
    • Added status indicators showing which accounts can use credits after reaching their limit.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, configuration, and management API guidance for the new controls and account-selection behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a setting that controls whether each Codex account can use ChatGPT credits after reaching a usage limit. It updates configuration, account routing, main-account policy, the management API, and dashboard controls.

Changes

Credits after usage limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Credit settings and usage-limit rules
src/types/config.ts, src/config/schema/config-schema.ts, src/config/diagnostics.ts, src/codex/account-credit-use.ts, src/codex/account-lifecycle.ts, tests/config/*, tests/codex-integration/codex-credits-after-limit.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/providers.md, structure/codex-account-controls.md
Configuration stores the account IDs allowed to use credits after a limit. Helpers update the setting, determine qualifying usage limits and reset times, and remove settings when accounts are deleted. Configuration validation and tests cover the setting and limit rules.
Routing and main-account enforcement
src/codex/routing/selection.ts, src/codex/routing.ts, src/codex/routing/thread-affinity.ts, src/usage/log.ts, src/codex/auth-context.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-credits-after-limit*.test.ts
Routing excludes accounts at qualifying usage limits when credit use is disabled. Main-account policy checks also refuse requests when the main account is held, after checking the existing hard lock. Integration tests cover selection, reset behavior, and main-account requests.
Account settings API and DTOs
src/codex/auth-api/account-list.ts, src/codex/auth-api/routes.ts, src/server/management/route-registry.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-credits-after-limit.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md
Account DTOs include creditsAfterLimit. The new PUT /api/codex-auth/accounts/credits route accepts individual or global updates, validates input, saves configuration, and returns errors for invalid values or unknown accounts.
Dashboard controls and coverage
gui/src/codex-credit-spend.ts, gui/src/components/CodexCreditSpend.tsx, gui/src/components/CodexAccountPool.tsx, gui/src/components/codex-account-pool-*.tsx, gui/src/hooks/useCodexAccountPool.ts, gui/src/styles/codex-credits.css, gui/src/i18n/*.ts, gui/tests/*codex*, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md
The dashboard adds global and per-account controls, account badges, and update feedback. Localization and styles support the controls. Tests cover control state and updates. Documentation describes the setting and its routing behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e186a

Users may misunderstand when credits can be spent, especially for the main account; the issues are bounded documentation and messaging corrections.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e186a

The default behavior reduces unintended credit spending and preserves the main account’s independent hard lock. However, a failed settings save can leave active permissions inconsistent with saved settings. Protection also depends on usable quota observations.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new permission setters change shared live configuration before saving it. If lock acquisition or persistence fails before publication, the request fails without restoring the previous permission. A failed enable operation can therefore leave credit use enabled in memory, while a failed disable operation can leave durable permission enabled for a later restart. This weakens failure containment and the predictability of the spending control.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A bulk permission mutation can affect every selectable pool account configured on the instance and the main-login slot. It does not create new selectable identities. Main-account credit permission remains subordinate to the independent hard lock.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is an authenticated credit-setting request followed by lock or persistence failure after live permission changes. Subsequent runtime selection can consume that changed permission despite a failed response. Actual unintended charges were not demonstrated, and this path does not establish unauthenticated access or credential escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The management ingress resolves an authenticated principal before dispatch. Admin-token authentication and GUI-session authentication are separate admission paths; GUI mutations require matching origins and a session CSRF token. The credits route validates mutation values and account identity but has no additional principal-specific consent check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Reset-based release prevents held accounts from requiring request traffic to replace an exhausted reading. Repeated selection evaluates the same credit predicate, and the block-reason path reports credits_off using that predicate rather than independently reconstructing the decision.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make credit-permission updates a single logical transaction across live and durable state. Restore prior state on failures before publication, distinguish failures after publication, and verify both enable and disable behavior under lock contention, write failure, repetition, and restart.

Explanation

Issue #6334 requires the per-account setting to remain enabled by default, with an opt-out for accounts that must stop at 100%. src/codex/account-credit-use.ts, codexAccountUsesCreditsAfterLimit (about lines 17-23), returns false when creditCodexAccountIds is absent. gui/src/components/CodexCreditSpend.tsx, AccountCreditsToggle (about lines 43-70), also treats an absent value as off. Removing the last ID deletes the setting, so new and existing accounts with no key start with credit use disabled. The per-account switch also must be next to the custom-threshold switch. gui/src/components/codex-account-pool-cards.tsx (about lines 174-188) renders it only inside the account's more disclosure, while AccountAutoSwitchControl is rendered in the card controls near lines 215-225. The routing implementation and integration tests cover full-window exclusion, reset re-entry, selection behavior, and the opt-in path, but the tests encode the opposite default and do not satisfy these two direct requirements.

Resolution

Treat an absent account setting as enabled, or persist only explicit opt-outs, in both src/codex/account-credit-use.ts and the UI state. Update the related tests and documentation. Render the per-account switch beside AccountAutoSwitchControl in gui/src/components/codex-account-pool-cards.tsx. Preserve the implemented full-window exclusion, reset re-entry, selection order, priority behavior, reset-credit behavior, and showCodexCredits independence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Issue #6334 requests one per-account control. This pull request adds a separate global control and bulk API behavior. gui/src/components/CodexCreditSpend.tsx (CodexCreditSpendSwitch, about lines 10-38) adds the global switch. gui/src/components/CodexAccountPool.tsx wires that switch to global updates. src/codex/account-credit-use.ts (setAllCodexAccountsCreditsAfterLimit, about lines 32-35) adds bulk persistence, and src/codex/auth-api/routes.ts adds the { all } branch to PUT /api/codex-auth/accounts/credits. The related global documentation, translations, and global tests implement this additional pool-wide feature. The linked issue does not require a pool-wide switch or bulk endpoint.

Resolution

Remove the global switch, bulk setter, { all } API behavior, and their dedicated documentation, translations, and tests from this pull request, or track the pool-wide feature in a separate issue and pull request. Retain the per-account API, UI, routing, and tests that directly implement #6334.

Refines #6422 for #6334. An account at 100% is now switched out by default
and returns after its reset; spending credits is opt-in.

- Store the allow-list creditCodexAccountIds instead of the opt-out list
noCreditCodexAccountIds; absence means no account spends credits, and a
  new account starts off.
- PUT /api/codex-auth/accounts/credits also takes { all } for the global
switch: true lists __main__ and every pool account, false clears it.
- Dashboard: one global "Use credits" switch beside the Codex credits
display switch, derived from the rows (off / mixed / on, like the quota
auto-refresh control), and a count button that opens a per-account panel
below the header. Cards drop their own switch and show a "Uses credits"
badge on accounts allowed to spend.

Co-authored-by: Sungyong Cho <dev@sungyongcho.com>
… menu

The header keeps one global "Use credits" switch. Each account's switch now
lives in its card's ⋯ disclosure (the main card gets the same disclosure for
it), so collapsed cards look as before apart from the "Uses credits" badge.
Drops the header panel and its count button.

…redits inputs

Review follow-ups for the opt-in credits switch:

- A credits-off refusal that lands during the awaited main token refresh no
longer marks a valid login for reauthentication or wraps into a 401; it
stays a reset-bound refusal, like the hard lock.
- cooldownErrorMessage keeps the credits-off wording, so clients see the
  remedy rather than cooldown-clearing advice.
- PUT /api/codex-auth/accounts/credits rejects a non-object JSON body with
  400 instead of throwing.
- A malformed creditCodexAccountIds degrades to "no account spends" on load
  and is rejected on write.
- The main card's switch, the docs, and a test state that allowing the main
account does not lift its hard lock (98% by default). The docs narrow the
  reset-less rule to long windows.

A lock at 100% still blocks at 100% (the check is percent >= threshold), so
the only way to let the main account spend credits is to turn the lock off.
Fix the main card hint in every locale and the docs. Also clarify the
Russian hint (enable the setting, not the account) and say in Turkish that a
full account is skipped by automatic selection rather than disabled.

- Line 48: Update the `creditCodexAccountIds` description to state which usage
windows apply to each plan: 30-day plans check monthly usage, while other plans
check both weekly and monthly usage. Preserve the existing description of the
5-hour window and reset behavior.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md dev-only exception), recorded by the author. This is integration, not a self-approval or an independent review.

  • Exact head: e186aba768. Every required check passed on that head. test 4/4 first failed on an unrelated timing assertion (fails closed when a headerless body drip-feeds bytes that never classify, 3243 ms against a 3000 ms bound) after a docs-only commit; only that shard was rerun, and it passed. The previous code head 08495cc2d1 passed every shard on its first run.
  • All Codex and CodeRabbit threads are answered and resolved; correct findings were fixed in 71d1f34710, 08495cc2d1 and e186aba768.
  • Security check by the integrating maintainer (not independent): the auth-context.ts change only adds a policy refusal and keeps it out of reauth marking. It reads the in-memory main policy quota, never the physical auth file, and logs no tokens or identifiers. The management route keeps its auth and id validation. The new default spends less than before, never more.
  • Attribution: Co-authored-by: Sungyong Cho on every branch commit and in the squash message.
  • Behavior change for release notes: pools that relied on credits being spent past 100% now switch accounts or stop at 100% until Use credits is turned on.
