Summary

The default featured subagent roster is now the GPT-6 trio: gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna. Before this change a fresh config shipped gpt-6-astra, gpt-5.6-sol, gpt-5.6-terra, gpt-5.6-luna, gpt-5.5.

Existing installs are updated once at startup by the version-2 step in src/config/subagent-models.ts. It cleans any stored roster of retired rows:

  • gpt-5.6-sol becomes gpt-6-sol and gpt-5.6-luna becomes gpt-6-luna, in the same position. A successor that is already listed is not added twice.
  • Every other bare gpt-5.5 / gpt-5.6 id is removed, including gpt-5.6-terra, gpt-5.5, and gpt-5.5-pro.
  • Ids containing / are left as written. That covers routed provider/model ids and account-qualified <selector>/<model> choices, because a 5.x suffix there names another provider's model.
  • A list that held only retired rows receives the new default. An explicitly empty list stays empty.

For example, the previous default [gpt-6-astra, gpt-5.6-sol, gpt-5.6-terra, gpt-5.6-luna, gpt-5.5] becomes [gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna], and [gpt-5.6-sol, custom/model, gpt-5.5] becomes [gpt-6-sol, custom/model]. Unversioned legacy lists still run the Astra upgrade first. The version marker is written in every case, so later edits, including re-adding a 5.x model, are kept.

Also in this PR:

  • The roster migration tests move from tests/server/config.test.ts, which is exactly at its file-size cap, to tests/routing/subagent-roster-migration.test.ts. The new file is registered in both layout maps. It adds tables for the cleanup rule: in-place mapping, dedupe, untouched / ids, all-retired lists falling back to the default, and empty lists staying empty.
  • The independent startup oracle in scripts/ci/docker-smoke.ts, structure/subagents.md, and the agents.md configuration reference in all eight locales now describe the new default and upgrade. The English page explains the cleanup rule.
  • Tests that pinned the old default or version (server-startup-reconcile-resilience, v1-hub-state, claude-desktop-discovery, claude-agents-inject, claude-management-api) now follow the new values, or read SUBAGENT_MODELS_VERSION / DEFAULT_SUBAGENT_MODELS directly.

This is the bottom of a two-PR stack. #5644 above it makes the Subagents dashboard autosave roster edits.

Verification

  • bun x tsc --noEmit: clean.
  • bun test --isolate over 14 affected files passed with 504 tests and 0 failures. They cover roster migration, startup resilience, combo management, CLI hub state, multi-agent compatibility, roster retention, OpenAI provider migration, v1 hub state, the Claude agent sync, inject, and management tests, config, structure-ssot, and file-size-ratchet. Test-layout guards, repo-hygiene, structure:check, and privacy:scan passed on the earlier head.
  • bun run test:changed covered almost the whole suite because src/config is imported nearly everywhere, and it hit the runner's time limit. The checkout lives under ~/.codex, so its test-home cleanup guard rejects repo-local temp dirs. Nine other files failed because a live local proxy owned port 10100. Those nine gave identical results at the merge base e9643875f0 and at this branch: 81 pass and 272 fail on both sides, with no failure unique to the branch. docker smoke was not run locally. Hosted CI passed all required jobs on the previous head 650c4ba751, and it runs again on this one.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Fresh configs now feature gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna. A one-time
version-2 step replaces a stored roster only when it still equals the previous
generated default exactly; edited lists are kept. The roster migration tests
move to tests/routing/subagent-roster-migration.test.ts because config.test.ts
sits at its file-size cap.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The default subagent roster changes to the GPT-6 trio. A version-2 migration replaces the prior generated roster only when it remains unchanged. Tests, startup expectations, and configuration references are updated. New devlog documents also describe a separate planned autosave change and delivery steps.

Users upgrading from an unversioned configuration can have a customized subagent roster silently replaced with the new GPT-6 defaults on first startup, and the change is saved. The configuration documentation also promises that reordered lists are kept, which is not true for these upgrades. Users can re-edit the roster afterward, but the migration should match the original saved list before normalizing it, and the docs should be corrected before merging.

P2 Badge Update the quickstart roster alongside the default

Changing the fresh default to this trio leaves docs-site/src/content/docs/getting-started/quickstart.md:123-125 claiming that a fresh config features five GPT-5.x/Astra models; the seven translated quickstarts repeat the same stale workflow. Users following the quickstart will therefore see a different picker than documented, so update the English quickstart and its translations to name the GPT-6 trio.

이 PR은 새 설정의 서브에이전트 기본 목록을 세 모델로 바꿔요. gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna예요. 예전 새 설정은 다섯 개였어요. Astra, 5.6 Sol, 5.6 Terra, 5.6 Luna, 5.5예요.

docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/agents.md:16 - 예전 기본 목록이 Astra, Sol, Terra, Luna, 5.5가 된다고 적혀 있어요.

Limit the preservation claim to version-1 lists.

The second step replaces only the exact version-1 generated default. Other version-1 lists, including reordered, shortened, or empty lists, remain unchanged by that step. Unversioned lists first undergo the Astra upgrade, which can change an unversioned reordered or custom list.

Identify generated defaults before normalizing unversioned rosters.

The cited four-model list was not the historical generated default. The merge-base default was ["gpt-5.5", "gpt-5.6-sol", "gpt-5.6-terra", "gpt-5.6-luna", "gpt-5.4-mini"].

The migration still loses edited choices. For example, ["gpt-5.5", "gpt-5.6-sol", "gpt-5.6-terra", "gpt-5.6-luna"] normalizes to V1_DEFAULT_SUBAGENT_MODELS, then the version-2 branch replaces it with the GPT-6 trio. The same can occur when Astra is already present in another position or when the cap removes a later entry. Startup persists this replacement.

Retain the original unversioned roster and replace it only when that original value matches a known generated default. Preserve the normalized roster for edited lists, and add regression cases for reordered, Astra-repositioned, and capped unversioned lists.

In `@src/config/subagent-models.ts` at line 32, Update migrateSubagentModels to
retain the original unversioned roster and replace it only when that original
exactly matches a known generated default, including the historical five-model
default; do not classify edited rosters based on their normalized value.
Preserve normalized edited choices, and add regression coverage for reordered,
Astra-repositioned, and capped unversioned lists.

The one-time version-2 upgrade now cleans any stored roster instead of only
the exact previous default: bare gpt-5.6-sol and gpt-5.6-luna become their
GPT-6 rows in place, and every other bare gpt-5.5/gpt-5.6 id is removed.
Routed and account-qualified ids are untouched; a list left empty receives the
defaults, and an explicitly empty list stays empty.

* docs(devlog): plan GPT-6 subagent defaults and roster autosave

* feat(subagents): default roster to the GPT-6 trio

Fresh configs now feature gpt-6-astra, gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna. A one-time
version-2 step replaces a stored roster only when it still equals the previous
generated default exactly; edited lists are kept. The roster migration tests
move to tests/routing/subagent-roster-migration.test.ts because config.test.ts
sits at its file-size cap.

* fix(subagents): align startup oracle and structure doc with the GPT-6 roster

* test(claude): follow the GPT-6 default roster in agent generation tests

* feat(subagents): drop retired gpt-5.5/5.6 rows in the roster upgrade
