Summary

Lane F of the app-runtime-ownership unit (devlog/_plan/260921_app_runtime_ownership/, decisions D8 + D9 part two with resolution R3): the Linux desktop updater contract and the installed-artifact release gate.

D8 — both Linux formats update in place. Until now a deb-installed app could detect an update but never apply it: the updater manifest published only the AppImage as a Linux updater target, while the pinned updater validates the downloaded bytes as a real .deb before installing through package-manager elevation. The manifest now publishes the deb under its own key (linux-x86_64-deb) alongside the AppImage's unchanged default key (linux-x86_64, kept so already-released AppImage installs keep resolving updates), and the shell selects the key from the bundle type the bundler patches into the binary at packaging time (tauri_utils::platform::bundle_type()). The deb install path itself (dpkg ownership detection, payload validation, pkexec/sudo elevation after the user chooses Install) is the pinned tauri-plugin-updater 2.9.0 behavior, unchanged.

Toolchain fix caught by audit. The first audit round found that the pinned @tauri-apps/cli 2.5.0 (bundler 2.4.0) never patches the bundle-type marker, so released artifacts would have reported "unknown" and the deb branch would never have fired. The CLI is bumped to 2.11.1 (bundler 2.9.1), verified statically at tag tauri-cli-v2.11.1: crates/tauri-bundler/src/bundle.rs maps Deb and AppImage to their marker values, patches per package type, signs after patching, and restores the unpatched binary between formats. desktop/ carries no tracked lockfile, so this is a package.json-only bump; a source-oracle test pins the floor at the first CLI whose bundler patches.

D9 part two — the installed-artifact gate. A dispatch-only workflow plus drivers under desktop/scripts/ that install the REAL artifact on one self-hosted GUI machine per platform, launch it against a staged npm runtime (npm --prefix install of the older release, managed service registration, non-default port, preserved home), and check the 080 observable contract: the staged runtime is drained with its registration preserved, the desktop install id is recorded as owner with exactly one consent-generation increment, /healthz on the preserved home and port reports the bundled sidecar's pid and version as a child of the launched app, window close and the OS quit gesture leave both pids alive with the window reopenable, and tray Quit lets a verifiably in-flight request (mock provider holds it) finish before both pids end. Cleanup is strict rollback: every step runs even after a failure, and a failed rollback fails the report.

R3 — both Linux update paths are gated. Linux gates require the older artifact. AppImage: the update must complete with zero pkexec sightings in the check and install windows, and the installed file must become byte-identical (sha256) to the target artifact at the same path. deb: pkexec must appear only during the install window (never during check), the gate cancels exactly the sighted prompt pids, and the dpkg version must be unchanged afterwards.

Isolation and runner safety are engineered in, per the second audit round: a preflight-isolation phase refuses to run on a machine that already has an opencodex service registration, default-home state, or running app; CODEX_HOME is staged alongside OPENCODEX_HOME; all process listing/visibility/elevation probes come from per-platform adapters; and GUI automation that OS automation cannot reach (the in-page consent dialog, Windows/Linux tray) is executed from operator-installed hook FILES selected by name through --hooks-dir — dispatch inputs can never supply command text to a persistent runner.

Until the takeover/consent lanes (A-D) land, the takeover and gesture phases will fail against current dev behavior — that is the gate doing its job, and the JSON report names exactly which contract item failed and what was observed.

Verification

Local checks: NOT RUN. This lane prohibits local verification entirely (no bun test, typecheck, cargo, installs, or ocx runs), including in cloned scratch checkouts; verification is static review plus hosted CI at the exact head SHA. What that means per gate:

  • bun run test / focused bun test: NOT RUN (forbidden in this lane).
  • bun run typecheck: NOT RUN — and note the root tsconfig includes only src/, so it would not have covered desktop/scripts or tests/ anyway.
  • cargo test / cargo clippy / cargo fmt for desktop/src-tauri: NOT RUN. The desktop-shell CI job runs all three on every push.
  • bun install: NOT RUN for this change (a root install predating the prohibition exists in this worktree but was not used for verification).
  • Disclosure for completeness: before the prohibition was issued mid-lane, focused tests, tsc, and cargo test/clippy/fmt ran green at tree content identical to this head, and one delegated audit executed one focused test file before the prohibition reached it. Under the corrected contract these runs are superseded; hosted CI is the verification authority.

Regression tests are written but intentionally unrun (the drive-red instruction was withdrawn mid-lane). What must go red without the fix, and why:

  • release-desktop-scripts.test.ts — the deb-target expectations fail without the manifest change because linux-x86_64-deb simply does not exist in platformFiles; with --require-all the error must name it. (Observed red earlier under the pre-prohibition instruction: "Missing signed updater platforms: linux-x86_64-deb" vs the old single-key message.)
  • updater.rs unit tests — deb_installs_resolve_their_own_updater_key fails against an unbranched linux_updater_target (returns None) because the deb case must yield Some("linux-x86_64-deb"). The same tests cannot catch a bundler that never patches the marker, which is why the CLI floor is pinned by the source-oracle test instead.
  • installed-gate-drivers.test.ts — argument parsing (R3: linux without --older-artifact is an error), hook-name validation (path traversal and shell text rejected), pid parsing (empty output is no pids, never pid 0), ownership evaluation (missing owner / +2 generation / missing generation all fail), phase plan (preflight first, update-verify linux-only before cleanup), adapter surface (scoped tray actions, window probes, pid-scoped elevation cancel), privacy scan of the driver sources, and workflow assertions (dispatch-only, contents:read, self-hosted labels, report upload on failure, full-40-hex action pins, hook-name-only inputs).

Static verification actually performed: full diff read after each change; plugin/updater mechanics confirmed against the vendored tauri-plugin-updater 2.9.0 source (UpdaterBuilder.target sets json_target exactly; install branches on dpkg ownership); bundler patching confirmed against the tauri-cli-v2.11.1 tag; call sites traced (UpdaterExt::updater_builder on AppHandle, win-exec commandInvocation usage pattern matches src/cli/claude.ts); three gpt-5.6-sol audit rounds plus the external re-audit in devlog/_plan/260921_app_runtime_ownership/110_reaudit.md, every lane-F finding folded. Round 1: 1 D8 blocker (the bundler never patched the bundle type — fixed by the CLI bump) + 6 D9 blockers (hook-file model replacing dispatch command text, preflight isolation, pid-0 parsing, cleanup short-circuit, drain in-flight proof, scoped elevation cancel). Round 2: 4 blockers (cleanup now touches only resources this run acquired, so a preflight refusal cannot destroy a detected install; jobs sit behind a required-review environment with checkout pinned to protected dev; version inputs are strict-validated semver so no npm alias injection; a stray duplicate describe opener removed) + 5 majors folded (tri-state registration probes incl. WinSW and on-disk units, takeover precondition of an unowned runtime, gestures assert hidden-then-visible, elevation monitors overlap the hooks and cancel proves the prompts exited, update assertions reject vacuous success by requiring distinct digests and exact from-version equality).

Hosted CI at exact head 161b3e8 (pull_request event; check-runs read directly from the API):

  • success (requested): changes, select windows runner, gates (typecheck + privacy scan + scans), test 1/4-4/4 (includes the new ci-workflows gate tests and the P0 refusal proof), desktop shell (cargo fmt + clippy + test on the updater change), docker smoke, storage policy, api usage, keyring ubuntu, keyring windows, linux-systemd, windows-schtasks, one macos-launchd, enforce-target, hygiene, label, react-doctor, resolve-pr.
  • skipped by event scope (never counted as green): windows shards (workflow_dispatch-gated by recorded decision), macos control, npm-global, structure gate, docs site build.
  • queued at report time behind the serial self-hosted macOS runner: macos 1/2, macos 2/2, macos widget + bundle, keyring macos, one macos-launchd. The macOS shards and keyring ran green at the immediately preceding head b879fac (same Rust/desktop content; the delta since is test-file and driver-script only); the widget bundle job has not yet completed at any head carrying the CLI bump and remains the open evidence gap.
  • one enforce-target run was cancelled by queue churn at an earlier head and re-drove to success; no cancelled or skipped job is counted anywhere above.

What a maintainer still has to do

  1. Register the self-hosted runners with labels opencodex-gate-macos, opencodex-gate-windows, opencodex-gate-linux (one GUI-session machine per platform; the Linux box needs a tray extension for the tray phases, npm/node, and non-interactive dpkg rights for install/remove).
  2. Install audited GUI hooks on each runner and set the OPENCODEX_GATE_HOOKS_DIR repo/org variable to that directory; dispatch inputs select hooks by file name only. Runners also need the gh CLI for artifact downloads.
  3. Harden the runner trust boundary: restrict each self-hosted runner group to this workflow, and add required reviewers to the opencodex-desktop-gate environment so every dispatch needs a maintainer approval; the jobs check out protected dev (never the dispatched ref) for the driver code.
  4. Stage the npm side on the Linux box (it has no ocx yet — open assumption 2 in 100_resolutions.md); the gate itself installs the npm package, so this just means the machine needs registry access.
  5. Wire the gate into release publication. Landing the workflow is not the same as gating releases on it: today it is a dispatch-only check that downloads artifacts from an existing release. D9's contract — publication waits for packaging AND this smoke — requires release.yml to wait for a green gate run before publish/attach (or an equivalent required check on the release ref). That wiring touches release.yml, which is lane E's surface, so this lane deliberately stops at delivering the workflow and drivers.
  6. Security review per MAINTAINERS.md: this lane changes release automation (new workflow, updater manifest, packaging toolchain) and the runner trust model (hook files, artifact installs on persistent machines) — flagged here explicitly per R6.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (Behavior is release-automation-internal; the contract and operator surface are documented in the workflow header comments and driver doc comments.)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (No secrets in the diff; hook execution is file-name-selected from an operator-owned directory; workflow is dispatch-only with contents:read; two audit rounds folded; maintainer security review flagged above as required by R6.)

This change adds a new installed-application verification gate plus Debian-specific update targeting. As written, the accompanying test file cannot be loaded, so its checks (including the workflow safety checks) never run, and one of the gate's own checks compares a value against itself and cannot catch a repeated consent prompt. Earlier concerns about leftover installs and log-file handling on the test machines are also still open. End users are not affected, but these should be corrected before merging.

P1 Badge Reject dormant pre-existing system installs

On a persistent Windows or Linux runner, a previously installed but non-running MSI/deb passes this isolation check because only service registration, default-home state, and running processes are inspected. The subsequent msiexec /i or dpkg -i can replace that installation, after which cleanup treats it as this invocation's artifact and uninstalls it. Add a platform-specific installed-package probe to the preflight, or preserve and restore the prior package state.

P1 Badge Fail closed when registration probes error

When a manager query fails for reasons other than absence—such as Task Scheduler/SCM access denial or an unavailable systemd user bus—result.ok === false is silently treated as “not registered.” Windows has no fallback registration files here, so the isolation preflight can proceed against a machine whose real service status is unknown, potentially replace that registration, and later remove it during cleanup. Preserve an absent/present/unknown result and abort on unknown rather than collapsing every nonzero exit into absence.

P1 Badge Pass --from-version in the valid Linux case

This supposedly successful parse still omits --from-version, but Linux parsing rejects that omission immediately at parseGateArguments lines 118–120, so options is always undefined and this new focused test fails. Add a distinct older --from-version to this invocation, as the later semver test already does. This breaks the repository test gate as committed.

P2 Badge Record artifact ownership before post-install discovery

If the system installation succeeds but subsequent discovery fails, installArtifact throws before this assignment: for example, the MSI adapter can complete msiexec and then fail to locate the executable, while the deb adapter can complete dpkg -i and then find no /usr/bin entry. In both cases acquired.artifact remains false, so the finalizer skips uninstalling a package this run actually placed on the persistent runner. Mark acquisition immediately after the package manager succeeds or make each adapter roll back before throwing.

Pass BunFile values to Bun.spawn output streams. Bun.file(...).writer() returns a FileSink, but Bun.spawn does not accept FileSink for stdout or stderr. This can make spawnTracked fail before the child starts. The exception bypasses phase recording, although finally still writes the report. The same pattern is used for the Linux update phase.

Track artifact acquisition at the adapter’s mutation boundary. acquired.artifact is set only after installArtifact resolves, so a partial macOS copy, a Windows MSI install followed by executable-discovery failure, or a Debian install followed by executable-discovery failure skips cleanup.

Setting the flag before the adapter call is necessary but not sufficient. If the Debian install throws after dpkg -i, packageName remains local to linuxAdapter.installArtifact; cleanup receives undefined and selects AppImage removal instead of sudo dpkg -r. Also, a generic pre-call flag can invoke an uninstaller when a pre-mutation probe fails, and cleanup treats any nonzero uninstaller result as a cleanup failure.

Change the adapter contract to expose a rollback record as soon as each adapter begins its first persistent mutation. Include the Debian packageName in that record, validate the dpkg-deb -f probe before dpkg -i, and make cleanup a no-op when the adapter reports that no mutation occurred.

Make the Windows backend assertions independent. The second assertion matches sc.exe query opencodex-proxy-native because opencodex-proxy-native contains opencodex-proxy. The test can therefore pass after removing the schtasks probe.

Explicit workflow/release security review of exact head b879facf4cbb62a8a72cb9001e1d22d357058c09.

The workflow boundary is mostly sound: permissions are read-only, third-party actions are immutable SHA-pinned, checkout is fixed to protected dev with credentials disabled, dispatch values enter commands through quoted environment variables, hook names are reduced to plain basenames, and the required-review environment protects the persistent GUI runners. This PR does not yet wire the gate into publication.

Two blockers remain:

  1. Every job passes --npm-package "opencodex@${FROM_VERSION}", but the published package is @bitkyc08/opencodex; opencodex returns npm 404 on the public registry. The stage-runtime phase therefore cannot install the intended older OpenCodex release.
  2. The self-hosted runner's npm install --prefix ... inherits ambient project/user npm configuration and npm_config_* environment. Even after correcting the package name, an operator or project .npmrc can redirect the package/dependencies and execute a different dependency tree on a persistent privileged GUI runner. Pin https://registry.npmjs.org, isolate user/global config, clear registry-affecting npm_config_*, and bind the installed package/version/readback to the requested release before any artifact mutation. The repository's current Codex CLI update work contains the relevant destination-isolation pattern, but do not reuse its unsafe lock implementation.

Also enforce from-version < version, not merely inequality: the workflow and report call it an older release, while the current parser accepts a newer version or reversed prerelease pair and only fails much later in GUI behavior.

For the Linux deb claim, the current installed gate proves that the deb-specific path reaches an elevation prompt and that cancellation preserves the old version; it never proves a successful in-place upgrade to the target version. Either add an accepted-install phase with exact target-version readback, or narrow the gate/PR claim to “deb target selection, payload admission, and cancel preservation.”

After these are fixed, rerun the local workflow driver tests and exact-head hosted CI. The actual self-hosted installed-artifact gate still requires an approved post-merge dispatch; ordinary PR CI cannot prove it.

desktop/scripts/installed-gate.ts preflight-isolation - 서비스 등록, 기본 홈의 service-state.json, 지금 돌아가는 앱만 봐요. 예전에 깐 MSI나 deb가 꺼져 있으면 통과해요. 그다음 msiexec나 dpkg -i가 그 설치를 덮어써요. 정리는 acquired.artifact가 참일 때 지워요.

패키지 관리자가 성공하는 순간 acquired.artifact를 켜세요. 그 세 구멍이 닫히기 전에는 게이트 워크플로만 draft처럼 다루거나, 러너에 올리기 전에 고치세요. D8만 먼저 쪼개 합치는 것도 괜찮아요.

The updater manifest resolved every Linux install to the AppImage
payload, so a dpkg install could detect an update but never apply it:
the updater validates the downloaded bytes as a real .deb before
installing and rejects the AppImage artifact.

The AppImage keeps the plugin default linux-x86_64 key so AppImage
installs from earlier releases keep resolving their updates. The deb
publishes under the explicit linux-x86_64-deb key, which the shell
selects from the bundle type embedded at packaging time in the next
commit.
A deb install cannot apply the AppImage payload: the pinned updater
validates the downloaded bytes as a real .deb and installs through
package-manager elevation, so resolving the default linux-x86_64 key
gives it an artifact it must reject.

The updater check now resolves its manifest key through
UpdaterBuilder::target. On Linux, a bundle patched as Deb at packaging
time (tauri-utils bundle_type, embedded by the bundler's binary
patching) selects linux-x86_64-deb; AppImage and unbundled builds keep
the updater's default key, which is also what installs from releases
before the deb target existed already resolve.
updater.rs selects the deb updater target from
tauri_utils::platform::bundle_type(), which reads a marker the
tauri-bundler patches into the binary at packaging time. The pinned
@tauri-apps/cli 2.5.0 ships bundler 2.4.0, which has no patching code:
every packaged artifact would report "unknown", the deb branch would
never fire, and a deb install would keep resolving the AppImage payload
it cannot apply. The unit tests inject BundleType values, so they
cannot see this packaging failure — the gap was caught by audit.

tauri-cli 2.11.1 (bundler 2.9.1) patches the marker per package type,
signs after patching, and restores the unpatched binary between formats
(crates/tauri-bundler/src/bundle.rs at tag tauri-cli-v2.11.1). It
matches the runtime line already pinned in Cargo.toml (tauri 2.11.6,
tauri-utils 2.9.3). desktop/ carries no tracked lockfile, so the bump
is package.json only; a source-oracle test pins the floor at the first
CLI whose bundler patches (2.7.0).

Serialize the Linux matrix. Both matrix legs target the label set [self-hosted, opencodex-gate-linux] and both mutate shared machine state: dpkg package state, the opencodex-proxy systemd user unit, and ~/.opencodex. If the operator registers more than one runner service with that label on one host, the two legs run at the same time. The preflight-isolation phase in desktop/scripts/installed-gate.ts then sees the other leg's registration or running app and refuses, so the gate reports FAIL for a scheduling reason. Set max-parallel: 1 so the legs run one after the other.

The consent-generation check on line 736 is a tautology. The left side comes from the read on line 730 and the right side re-reads the same service-state.json through observeOwnership. Both sides are always equal, including when both are undefined. The relaunch-consent phase therefore cannot detect a re-asked consent, which is the exact contract the comment on lines 734-735 states. A build that increments the consent generation on every cold relaunch still reports PASS.

Capture the generation observed at takeover and compare against that value.

The release gate from D9 part two: a contract engine plus per-platform
adapters that install the real artifact, launch it against a staged npm
runtime on a non-default port, and drive the ownership contract —
drain with registration preserved, one consent-generation increment,
healthz identifying the bundled sidecar on the preserved home and port,
close and quit gestures leaving both pids alive, and tray Quit letting
an in-flight request finish before both processes end. Linux gates
carry the update phase for both formats (R3): AppImage in place with
no elevation, deb asking for authorization only after Install with
cancel preserving the old version.

GUI automation that an OS cannot reach (the in-page consent dialog,
Windows and Linux tray clicks) is supplied by the operator as override
commands; the engine fails those phases with diagnostics rather than
guessing. Cleanup is strict rollback and its failure fails the report.
Dispatch-only workflow that runs the gate drivers on one maintainer-
registered GUI machine per platform: macOS, Windows, and a Linux matrix
over deb and AppImage. Each job downloads the real release artifacts,
stages the older release as the npm runtime, runs the ownership and
update contract, and uploads the JSON report whether the gate passed
or failed.

Registering the runners, supplying the machine-specific tray and
consent automation commands, and wiring this gate into release.yml
publication are maintainer actions outside this change.

…ater table (#5425)

dev went red at the union of #5405 and #5391: lane F made the deb a second
Linux updater target, so the verifier's derived expected set gained
OpenCodex-<version>-linux-amd64.deb.sig, while the test's hand-written
oracle still described the earlier world where only the AppImage was
signed. Each branch was green alone; the merge was not.

The fix is derivation, not list-keeping. The signed set and the manifest
platform list in the fixture now come straight from platformFiles — the
table that decides which bundles carry the updater key — and the produced
payload list comes from the shared standalone target module and the bundle
table. A future updater target changes both sides of the assertion by
itself. The derivation test keeps its concrete payload anchors (a renamed
or dropped bundle should still fail for a human to review) and asserts the
rule instead of the roster: a bundle's signature is expected exactly when
the updater table names it.

Only the two test oracles changed; the verification ordering (checksums,
signatures and the manifest all precede publication) is untouched.
