test(core): lock the two invariants AGENTS.md claims are enforced - #2751
Conversation
The wp6 audit's useful negative result: the core invariants hold on dev, but two
of them were held by nothing except the current code being correct.
Gap 1 — the no-await activation scan was never written. AGENTS.md states the
synchronous-activation guarantee as if enforced, and
devlog/_fin/260814_lab_core_decoupling/080_activation_is_synchronous.md:143
recorded it as a Phase-4 test, but tests/core-lab-boundary.test.ts only ever
held the two import-graph guards. The failure it guards is silent: an await
between Bun.serve and labActivationRequired lets the synchronous
subagent-fallback chain observe an empty evidence slot and route subagents to a
different model than the operator configured. Nothing goes red; the wrong model
just answers.
The scan blanks comments and string bodies before looking, which is not
decoration: the window itself contains two comments saying the word await
(src/server/index.ts:1853 "cannot await", :1950 "nowhere to await"), so a naive
text match fails on correct code, and a guard that cries wolf on dev gets
deleted rather than fixed. Template interpolations stay code, because
`${await x()}` is a real violation. Depth tracking distinguishes a function body
from a block, so the three awaits inside the server.stop closure are tolerated
while an await inside if/try/for is still reported.
Gap 2 — the R3-1 profile-less dry-run assertion was missing.
devlog/_fin/260814_lab_core_decoupling/090_audit_round3_closeout.md:47 required
it; tests/lab-activation.test.ts only checked that a bare config never
activates, which never exercises the management route where the activation call
actually lives (routing-profile-routes.ts:293 and :368).
Both driven red before being kept:
- insert `await Promise.resolve()` before the activation block and mark
startServer async -> 3 of the 4 new boundary assertions fail
- move the dry-run activateLab call above the unknown-profile 404 and make it
unconditional -> the R3-1 case fails while its anti-vacuity twin still passes
The R3-1 block asserts both directions on purpose: the same route, same process,
one config field different must still fill the slot, or the negative case would
keep passing if the route stopped activating entirely.
Also corrects src/server/responses/core.ts:5194, which still called generic
OAuth failover "opt-in and a strict no-op otherwise". Since #2568d presence is
consent: rotation defaults ON at two or more eligible accounts
(src/oauth/generic-account-failover.ts:104-128). Single-account installs are
still a no-op and an explicit false still wins, so only the "opt-in" half was
wrong.
Verification: tests/core-lab-boundary.test.ts + tests/lab-activation.test.ts 32
pass / 0 fail, root tsc 0.

…hygiene gate
AGENTS.md asserted the synchronous-activation guarantee as prose while the
paragraph itself was the only thing holding it. It now says which scan enforces
it and why that scan has to ignore comments, string bodies, and nested
functions: the window legitimately contains three awaits inside the server.stop
closure and two comments that mention the word.
Also rewrites one fixture in the new boundary test. The deterministic hygiene
gate scans text for `catch {}` and cannot tell a synthetic fixture string from
real control flow, so the try/catch case is now assembled from pieces. CI failed
on empty_catch for exactly this line; the assertion is unchanged and still
reports [2].
Verification: tests/core-lab-boundary.test.ts 17 pass / 0 fail.

Recognize expression-bodied callbacks and property keys before reporting await.
At tests/core-lab-boundary.test.ts:250-258, stack tracks only brace-delimited function bodies. The scan therefore reports await in const stop = async () => await release(); and in { await: false }, although neither expression is a body-level AwaitExpression. Track expression-bodied arrow functions and distinguish object property keys. Add focused regression cases for both forms.

Verify that activation remains in the synchronous function body
The test only checks that the activation anchor occurs after Bun.serve; it does not verify that the anchor itself remains at startServer body level. For example, moving the existing activation block into queueMicrotask(() => { ... }) or an async IIFE leaves startServer non-async and preserves both anchors, while bodyLevelAwaitLines deliberately ignores awaits inside that nested function, so every new assertion passes even though startServer returns before Lab registers and policy subagents can be routed to the wrong model. Track brace/function depth through the activation anchor (or parse the function AST) and assert the block is executed directly in the synchronous body.

…o the gate An independent review of the guard added in the previous commit found it narrower than the invariant it claims to hold. The window ran from Bun.serve to the labActivationRequired check, which left two blind spots: an await inside the `if (labActivationRequired(...))` body, and an await between activation and `return server`. AGENTS.md and 080_activation_is_synchronous.md both state the guarantee as covering everything from Bun.serve to the return. Proven in both directions rather than argued: - with the old window, injecting `await Promise.resolve()` inside the activation body still reported 17 pass / 0 fail — the violation was invisible - with the window extended to `return server;`, that same injection fails, and so does an await placed just before the return The scan also now asserts that the activation check sits inside the window. If it ever drifted out, the scan would stay green while no longer covering the ordering it exists to protect. Verification: tests/core-lab-boundary.test.ts 17 pass / 0 fail; both injections reverted and the tree confirmed clean.

Summary
The wp6 audit's useful negative result: the core invariants hold on
dev, but two of them were held by nothing except the current code being correct. This adds the two guards that were promised and never written, and corrects one comment that has become false.Gap 1 — the no-await activation scan
AGENTS.mdstates the synchronous-activation guarantee as if it were enforced, and080_activation_is_synchronous.md:143recorded it as a Phase-4 test.tests/core-lab-boundary.test.tsonly ever held the two import-graph guards. The failure it guards against is silent. Everything between
Bun.serveand the return ofstartServerruns in one synchronous turn, which is what guarantees a policy route cannot be evaluated before its evidence provider is registered. Add oneawaitthere and the synchronous subagent-fallback chain observes an empty slot and routes subagents to a different model than the operator configured. Nothing goes red — the wrong model simply answers. The scan blanks comments and string bodies before looking, which is load-bearing rather than tidy: the window itself contains two comments that say the word await (

Template interpolations stay code, because${await x()}is a genuine violation. Brace-depth tracking distinguishes a function body from a block, so the three awaits inside theserver.stopclosure are tolerated while an await insideif/try/foris still reported.Gap 2 — the R3-1 profile-less dry-run assertion
090_audit_round3_closeout.md:47required a behavioral assertion that a genuinely profile-less dry-run registers no slot.tests/lab-activation.test.tsonly checked that a bare config never activates, which never exercises the management route where the activation call actually lives (src/server/management/routing-profile-routes.ts:293and:368).This was exactly the "guard passes while the property is violated" path from audit round 3, so it is asserted in both directions: the same route, same process, one config field different must still fill the slot. Without that half, the negative case would keep passing if the route stopped activating altogether.
Prose correction
src/server/responses/core.ts:5194still described generic OAuth failover as "opt-in and a strict no-op otherwise". Since #2568d presence is consent: rotation defaults ON at two or more eligible accounts (src/oauth/generic-account-failover.ts:104-128). Single-account installs are still a no-op and an explicitoauthAccountFailover.enabled: falsestill wins, so only the "opt-in" half was wrong. The behaviour is a recorded owner decision and is unchanged.Verification
