No GitHub or Linear issue yet. Server half: kurrent-io/kcap-server#2611

What & why

ServerConnectionService.StartAsync called RequestLaunchAgentV2, which throws every refusal as a HubException, so the app showed SignalR's prefixed message ("An unexpected error occurred invoking 'RequestLaunchAgentV2' on the server. HubException: …"). It now calls TryLaunchAgent, which returns a result envelope, LaunchResponse(AgentId, Refusal), and maps a set Refusal to LaunchOutcome.Error as written. Adds the TryLaunchAgent method constant and LaunchResponse to RemoteModelsJsonContext

Where to look

No fallback to RequestLaunchAgentV2, so no missing-method detection or error-text parsing. Merge and release only after kcap-server#2611 is on every tenant, or launches against an older tenant fail with SignalR's "Method does not exist"

Verification

HubTestHost serves TryLaunchAgent, and a test pins a refusal envelope surfacing unchanged as LaunchOutcome.Error. Built, not run locally

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Launch requests now return a structured result that identifies the launched agent or provides a refusal. The app uses this result to distinguish successful launches from requests that could not be accepted, while continuing to report connection and sign-in issues as failures. This makes launch outcomes clearer without changing the existing sign-in or connection checks.

Falls back to RequestLaunchAgentV2 on a server without TryLaunchAgent, so the app works against any tenant version.

📝 Walkthrough

The launch call now uses TryLaunchAgent and returns a LaunchResponse with an agent ID or refusal. ServerConnectionService maps the response to a successful or failed LaunchOutcome. The test host and launch tests now use LaunchResponse.

ServerConnectionService returns success when the response contains an AgentId, or failure with the refusal otherwise. The test host and launch test handler now return LaunchResponse; related comments are updated.

The launch change is mergeable with awareness that refusal handling lacks a regression test. Release must still follow the stated server rollout.

Show server launch refusals without SignalR error text

🐞 Bug fix 🧪 Tests 🕐 20-40 Minutes

Grey Divider

AI Description

• Call TryLaunchAgent so refused launches return the server’s message rather than a SignalR
 exception.
• Add the launch response contract and cover accepted and refused results in hub tests.
• Require every tenant to support TryLaunchAgent before releasing; there is no legacy fallback.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Fall back to the legacy hub method
  • ➕ Allows launches against tenants not yet running the new server method.
  • ➖ Requires two launch paths and cannot obtain a clean refusal envelope from the legacy method.

Recommendation: Keep the single TryLaunchAgent path to preserve the server’s refusal verbatim and avoid parsing exception text. Release only after the method is available on every tenant, since older servers will reject the invocation.

Action required

1. Older tenants cannot launch agents ✓ Resolved
Description
StartAsync now calls only TryLaunchAgent, with no fallback to RequestLaunchAgentV2. The
kcap-deployments stable and micro channels still deploy server image 1.3.1, so releasing this
client before those tenants receive the new hub method makes their launch requests fail at SignalR
method binding.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/ServerConnectionService.cs[R511-512]

+ var response = await hub.InvokeAsync<LaunchResponse>(
+                HubMethods.TryLaunchAgent, LaunchPayload.For(request), ct).ConfigureAwait(false);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Concrete backward-compatibility failure; the PR explicitly acknowledges older tenants fail without
TryLaunchAgent.

PR-#1729

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The client has switched to the distinct new RPC. The server defines both RPCs separately, while
deployment channel defaults still pin stable and micro tenants to 1.3.1 and the stable
ApplicationSet uses that channel default for tenant releases.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The client invokes only TryLaunchAgent, but stable and micro tenant manifests still pin an older server image. Launches against tenants without that method fail before the server can return a refusal.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ServerConnectionService.cs[511-512]
- /cross_repos/kcap-deployments/charts/kcap-tenant/values-stable.yaml[416-418]
- /cross_repos/kcap-deployments/charts/kcap-tenant/values-micro.yaml[261-263]
## Recommended Fix
Block client release until every tenant channel is rolled out to a server image containing TryLaunchAgent, including tenant overrides; alternatively, retain a missing-method fallback to RequestLaunchAgentV2 during the transition.
