Treat Linux without systemd as having no service manager - #1898
On a Linux host without systemd (most containers and sandboxes), kcap daemon status crashed on its first systemctl call, and daemon stop, daemon service install and the local edition's uninstall and upgrade reach the same call. The service factories now check /run/systemd/system (systemd's own sd_booted test) and refuse there, using the "no service manager" path every caller already has: status and stop skip the service, daemon service … exits 1 pointing at kcap daemon start -d, and setup reports UnsupportedPlatform. The local edition is the exception: its systemctl calls fail as an unreachable systemd's do, so an installation on disk still reads as installed and uninstall keeps its data rather than deleting it with the config directory. Uninstall also reports a daemon unit left from when systemd ran, and keeps the config directory, instead of skipping it
Where to look
This complements #1723, which reads an unreachable user bus as unknown: that covers a host that has systemctl, this one a host that has none
A host that runs systemd but has no user manager for this account still reaches systemctl --user, which fails with an error rather than crashing; that stays out of scope
Verification

On Linux without systemd, daemon service commands explain why they cannot run. Local edition setup requires systemd; use kcap daemon start -d to start the daemon without it.
A manually started daemon does not restart after a system restart. Starting it again resumes agents active within the configured window, which defaults to 24 hours.
When systemd is unavailable, stopping or uninstalling cannot remove remaining service units. Uninstall preserves the configuration directory if a unit remains or the unit directory cannot be read.
Documentation
Clarified Linux daemon behavior, manual startup, and uninstall details.
Every caller already reads PlatformNotSupportedException as "no service", so refusing at the factory covers status, stop, install and setup; a guard on the unit file alone would not survive the unit that a failed install leaves behind.

Walkthrough
Linux daemon service and local-server paths now check whether systemd is running. The no-systemd behavior includes service-manager errors, local installation rejection, stop and uninstall handling, and updated README guidance.
Changes: Linux systemd availability
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Daemon service handling src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/ServiceManagerFactory.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/OutgoingRecorders.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Services/ServiceManagerFactoryTests.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/UninstallCommandTests.cs, README.md
The service-manager factory checks whether systemd is running and throws PlatformNotSupportedException when it is not. Outgoing-recorder stopping reports installed units that cannot be removed and marks the operation unsuccessful. Tests cover both systemd states and uninstall behavior. The README documents service-command behavior and manual daemon startup.
The local-server factory uses a runner that reports systemd as unavailable when Linux has no running systemd. Local installation fails with UnsupportedPlatform in that case. Tests cover the no-systemd and systemd-running cases.
Service operations without systemd follow the documented fallback behavior, and no merge-blocking issue is identified.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 331d3
The service check prevents unsupported systemd calls, but an existing local installation can now be mistaken for no installation. On a no-systemd host, uninstall can consequently delete local data and lifecycle safety metadata without the normal local-purge consent and cleanup sequence. Remote exploitation or increased privileges were not demonstrated.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · observed: Missing systemd is newly reported as UnsupportedPlatform, which uninstall interprets as NotInstalled before inspecting persistent local state. If local state exists under the default config directory, successful uninstall --yes without --keep-config reaches recursive deletion with a null local-root preservation boundary. This bypasses the normal --purge-local consent, lifecycle lease, recovery and durable-retirement sequence, deleting recordings and safety metadata. The regression requires existing local state; a live stranded service is not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated failure scope is the invoking user's local installation and writable configuration tree. It requires persisted state on a Linux environment where the marker is absent, followed by uninstall; no new remote entrypoint or privilege gain was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported security-relevant consequence is loss of lifecycle and retired-origin controls through the destructive cleanup path. Whether this subsequently permits requests to an unintended service or leaves a live service unmanaged remains unverified; neither is asserted as an established attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Countercontrols remain: service verbs refuse before dispatch; --keep-config prevents generic config deletion; earlier cleanup failures also preserve configuration. These controls do not establish that persistent local state is absent when systemd is unavailable.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Generic recorder cleanup still attempts daemon and watcher shutdown and checks survivors after service-manager refusal. Its inspected scope does not replace the local-edition stop-verification and retirement sequence bypassed by the new uninstall outcome.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Distinguish an unavailable service manager from an absent installation. Resolve and preserve durable local-root state independently of service selection, and refuse destructive cleanup when ownership, recovery or safe service retirement cannot be established.

Explanation
The changes remain connected to issue #1897. Systemd detection, daemon no-service handling, setup behavior, outgoing-recorder handling, local-edition handling, documentation, and focused tests all address the reported Linux-without-systemd failure. The local-edition behavior conflicts with the issue requirement, but it is not unrelated scope.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1897 is open and directly linked. The daemon service path meets the Linux no-systemd requirement: ServiceManagerFactory checks /run/systemd/system, daemon no-service paths remain usable, service commands reject with kcap daemon start -d, setup reports unsupported platform, and the README includes the systemd and manual-restart guidance. The local-edition requirement is not met. On Linux without systemd, LocalServerServices.ForCurrentOs returns LocalServerSystemdService with a runner that returns exit code 127. Issue #1897 requires this service creation path to report LocalInstallFailure(UnsupportedPlatform) so uninstall and local upgrade use the existing absent-service behavior. LocalInstallerFactory.Create also rejects the platform, but it does not change the specified LocalServerServices.ForCurrentOs behavior. The added local tests verify the alternate behavior instead of the issue requirement.
Resolution
Change the Linux no-systemd branch in LocalServerServices.ForCurrentOs to throw LocalInstallFailure(LocalInstallFailureCode.UnsupportedPlatform). Update the local uninstall and upgrade tests to verify the existing absent-service behavior and retain the required local data handling.

Handle Linux hosts without a running systemd service manager
🐞 Bug fix🧪 Tests📝 Documentation🕐 20-40 Minutes
AI Description
• Detect Linux hosts without systemd before creating daemon or local-edition services.
• Use existing unsupported-platform paths instead of failing on a systemctl call.
• Document the container behavior and test both systemd-present and systemd-absent paths.
Checking at the two factory boundaries fits the existing unsupported-platform handling and prevents callers from reaching systemctl. Guarding individual commands or unit files would leave other call paths exposed.

1. Uninstall can erase local recordings 🐞 Bug≡ Correctness
Description
LocalServerServices.ForCurrentOs now throws before global uninstall can obtain the local root, so
uninstall passes a null root to UninstallFiles.DeleteConfig. If a local edition was previously
installed at its default location and systemd is no longer running, a successful kcap uninstall
recursively deletes the config directory containing the local installation and its data without
running the local removal or consent checks.
+ if (!(systemdRunning ?? ServiceManagerFactory.SystemdRunning)())+ throw new LocalInstallFailure(LocalInstallFailureCode.UnsupportedPlatform,+ "The local edition on Linux needs systemd, which is not running on this machine.");

This exposes destructive uninstall behavior; recent history accepts safeguards preventing unsafe
local cleanup and preserving installation lifecycle state.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The new guard causes stack construction to fail; global uninstall catches that failure as an absent
installation. The default local root lies inside the default config directory, while the null-root
cleanup path deletes that directory recursively.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
Global uninstall treats the new unsupported-platform exception as proof that no local installation exists. With the default local root inside the config directory, it can delete local data without local-removal consent.

## Recommended Fix
Do not equate unavailable systemd with an absent local installation. Resolve and inspect the local root independently; if the service-dependent removal cannot run, report an incomplete uninstall and preserve the root and its lifecycle metadata rather than recursively deleting the containing config directory. Add a test with an installed default local root and systemd unavailable.

2. Resume window documentation can be wrong 📎 Requirement gap≡ Correctness
Description
README.md hard-codes "the last 24 hours" instead of naming the daemon's configurable
ResumeMaxAge. When KCAP_RESUME_MAX_AGE_SECONDS changes that setting, readers are given an
inaccurate restart-resumption window.
+On **Linux** the service needs systemd running. Where it is not, as in most containers and sandboxes, every `kcap daemon service` verb exits 1 saying so, `kcap daemon status` and `stop` skip the service, and setup tells you to run `kcap daemon start -d`. Nothing starts that daemon again after a restart: run it again, and it resumes the agents it was hosting that were alive within the last 24 hours.

Recent history accepts README corrections that qualify implementation-dependent behavior and prevent
misleading operational guidance.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The changed README states that manually restarted daemons resume agents alive within the last 24
hours, while the daemon defines ResumeMaxAge as a configurable setting and parses
KCAP_RESUME_MAX_AGE_SECONDS. The documentation therefore omits the configuration-dependent
behavior required by the checklist.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The README describes agent resumption as limited to the last 24 hours, but the daemon exposes a configurable `ResumeMaxAge` value through `KCAP_RESUME_MAX_AGE_SECONDS`. This can make the documented restart behavior inaccurate.

- README.md[1297-1297]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/DaemonConfig.cs[22-22]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/DaemonRunner.cs[139-139]
## Recommended Fix
Update the README to state that manually restarting the daemon resumes agents that are within the configured `ResumeMaxAge`, noting that the default is 24 hours if useful. Avoid presenting 24 hours as an unconditional limit.

OutgoingRecorders.StopAsync can enumerate persisted user units, and that caller treats the

This can leave installed services orphaned; history accepts fixes ensuring service cleanup and
recovery failures are not reported successful.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
User units persist outside the kcap config directory and can be listed without systemctl. The new
exception bypasses the uninstall loop, yet the caller treats it as success, and global uninstall
reports success when its remaining cleanup succeeds.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
When systemd is unavailable, global uninstall skips service enumeration and can report success despite existing daemon unit files that it did not disable or remove.

- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/OutgoingRecorders.cs[39-59]

## Recommended Fix
Keep the guard against invoking systemctl, but inspect persisted Linux user units during global uninstall when the manager is unavailable. If units exist and cannot be safely disabled, report incomplete removal and avoid claiming a successful uninstall; add coverage for an existing unit with systemd unavailable.

Every unit test that calls ForCurrentOs injects systemdRunning (ServiceManagerFactoryTests.cs:29, :36, :43). No unit test runs the default SystemdRunning path. A regression that makes the default return true without /run/systemd/system would leave the unit suite green. That default is the only gate between a no-systemd Linux host and a SystemdServiceManager. The production callers use it without a probe (DaemonServiceCommands.cs:44, StatusCommand.cs:386).
A Linux-only test can pin the default without a seam change:
The test repeats the production marker path. It checks that the default parameter reads the marker. It does not check the production path against an independent source.
