The version just replaced is kept: a daemon started before the switch still runs it. A directory holding a file that cannot be opened for exclusive write is in use, as a running binary is on Windows and Linux. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An update switches the `current` junction instead of replacing the running file, so the binary reached through it changes on Windows too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

1. Test cleanup misses direct writes 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
On_Windows_a_script_install_is_watched_through_current rewrites viaCurrent with File.WriteAllText instead of using the temporary-directory helper for the file operation. Because the path belongs to tmp, this bypasses the helper's filesystem-state conventions and can leave future changes inconsistent with its cleanup model.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
The test writes directly to a file under a `TempDir` using `File.WriteAllText`, contrary to the repository's temporary filesystem helper convention.
## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Services/RestartCoordinatorTests.cs[133-135]
## Recommended Fix
Create the updated file content through the `TempDir` helper, or extend the helper with an operation suitable for replacing file contents, so all temporary filesystem state remains managed consistently.

2. The pr lacks a closing issue reference 📘 Rule violation § Compliance
Part of #1483 — AI-3775 names a GitHub number and Linear key without a closing keyword such as Closes #1483. The required reference line therefore does not give GitHub automation a closing action, even though the rest of the description explains the update.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
The PR description includes `#1483` and `AI-3775`, but the reference line does not include a GitHub closing keyword.
## Fix Focus Areas
- README.md[2538-2541]
## Recommended Fix
Update the PR description reference line so it contains exactly one GitHub closing keyword and issue number together with the Linear key, for example `Closes #1483 AI-3775`.

3. The merge subject fails commit policy 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
The PR title and supplied commit subjects do not match the required single-clause subject format ending in (#digits), with hyphenated words and Windows also violating the prescribed word pattern. The merge subject can therefore fail the repository's commit-subject compliance check even though the change description and commits identify the work.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
The supplied PR title and commit subjects do not consistently satisfy the required imperative single-clause format with a final GitHub issue reference.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Resources/help-update.txt[17-20]
## Recommended Fix
Use a single imperative clause made of space-separated words, avoid extra punctuation or disallowed hyphenated and capitalized words, and end the merge subject with exactly one GitHub issue reference in the form `(#1483)`.

4. Windows daemons miss some script updates 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
StatBinaryAt reduces the executable reached through current to its size and modification time, without recording which version the junction targets. If an update switches to a different daemon binary with the same size and modification time, BinaryChanged sees no difference and the running Windows daemon never queues its restart.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
A Windows script-install update can switch `current` to another version without changing the size-and-time fingerprint used to detect updates.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/RestartCoordinator.cs[89-95]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/RestartDecision.cs[3-14]
## Recommended Fix
Include the identity of the version targeted by `current` in the Windows script-install comparison, alongside the existing binary fingerprint. Add a test that switches targets whose binaries have identical sizes and modification times.

official .NET documentation DirectoryInfo.Delete recursive symbolic links junctions EnumerateFiles SearchOption.AllDirectories symbolic links .NET 8
💡 Result:
- **`DirectoryInfo.Delete(true)`**: The docs say `true` deletes the directory, its subdirectories, and files, but don’t specify symbolic-link or junction behavior. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.io.directoryinfo.delete?view=netframework-4.8))
- **`EnumerateFiles(..., SearchOption.AllDirectories)`**: The docs explicitly say this includes reparse points such as symbolic links and mounted drives; a link that creates a loop can cause an infinite search. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/dotnet/api/System.IO.SearchOption))
- **Junction caveat in .NET 8**: The runtime issue reports recursive deletion failing on Windows when a directory contains a junction, while symbolic links worked in the reported case. It was filed against .NET 8-era behavior, but does not establish behavior on every OS or later runtime. (GitHub issue 86249 in dotnet/runtime (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference))
**Bottom line:** Don’t treat `SearchOption.AllDirectories` as a safe way to enumerate without traversing links. The official API docs don’t settle `Delete(true)`’s link behavior; the junction failure report is a specific Windows case, not a universal guarantee.

Skip reparse points in AnyFileInUse.
PruneVersions excludes only a reparse point at the candidate root. AnyFileInUse uses SearchOption.AllDirectories, which can enumerate nested symlinks, junctions, and mounted drives. A nested link can make an unrelated open file cause the candidate to remain in use.

.NET FileStream FileAccess.ReadWrite FileShare.None Unix macOS file open mtime running executable official documentation
💡 Result:
If you’re asking whether opening a running executable this way can update its modification time: **opening it alone does not establish that its mtime changes.** Mtime tracks file-content modification; merely opening a file is not a content write.
`FileAccess.ReadWrite` requests permission to read and write. `FileShare.None` asks .NET to deny sharing while the stream is open; Microsoft documents that meaning, but the documentation does not promise that it prevents every kind of filesystem operation on Unix/macOS. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.io.fileshare?view=net-7.0&utm_source=openai))
So, on macOS, if you actually write to the executable through the stream, its mtime may change. If you only open and close it without writing, this API combination alone is not a reason to expect an mtime change. **Whether writes to that particular running executable succeed, and the exact timestamp behavior, depends on the filesystem/runtime circumstances; the sources here don’t establish that specific case.** The .NET runtime source also notes a macOS-specific need to create a new inode when updating a signed file, but that is a code-signing update scenario—not proof of general behavior for a running executable. Disable pruning on macOS when using the default probe.
On macOS, a running executable can pass AnyFileInUse. PruneVersions can then delete its version directory while the process still has the binary open. Keep all candidates on macOS because this probe cannot detect that state.

Part of #1483 — AI-3775
What & why
Testing #1483 on Windows found two gaps after
kcap updateon a script install. Every supersededversions/<v>and.replaced-*directory stays forever (72 MB each on win-x64). And a Windows daemon never notices an update, because self-detection was off there. An update now deletes versions older than the one it replaced, skipping any directory with a file that cannot be opened for exclusive write; a running binary fails that open on Windows and Linux.
