Closes #1629 — AI-3994

What & why

A terminal tab that rides out a daemon restart guessed which runtime its attach reached from a ledger read taken before dialing. Some orderings of the attach stream, status rows and ledger writes therefore ended the tab in the wrong state, or skipped a reattach. A daemon advertising attach-runtime/1 now answers the new AttachWithRuntime request with a RuntimeStarted frame (the agent's CreatedAt, the ledger's started_at) ahead of Attached, and the tab binds to that. After settling on Interrupted or on its own runtime's exit, the tab keeps reading the ledger until it agrees with what was published. A status row starts recovery only when the ledger names a runtime other than the one the tab ended on, and only while neither a later attempt nor a reattach the user started has superseded it.

Where to look

  • The stamp is its own frame because Attached's snapshot is an unbounded tail.
  • The tab requests the stamp only from the daemon its status stream is connected to now. While that stream is still reconnecting after a restart, the tab sends plain Attach and binds by the pre-dial read, as before. A daemon that predates the request never gets it.

Verification

  • With each fix disabled, the 10 new ordering and fallback tests in TerminalTabResumeTests fail and the others pass. With the fixes, all 35 pass, 5 runs in a row.
  • App (3814), Core (4953), Daemon (4500) and CLI (7581) unit suites ran. The 5 daemon and 5 CLI failures were timeouts in unrelated classes (permission bridge, cloud sink, PR lookup), which pass when run alone.
  • dotnet publish -c Release of Cli and Daemon: 0 IL2xxx/IL3xxx.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Terminal attachments can now report the attached runtime’s start time when supported.
    • Attach acknowledgements include runtime metadata, snapshots, and read-only reasons.
    • Runtime-aware attachment capability is advertised and negotiated automatically, with fallback support for older daemons.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved recovery and resume handling when runtimes change, reconnect, or report late status updates.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for runtime-aware attachment, recovery races, capability negotiation, and timestamp transmission.

)

The stamp rides a frame of its own ahead of Attached: the snapshot is that
frame's unbounded tail, and the CLI's own attach must keep parsing it unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The local IPC attach protocol can report an agent runtime’s start time when the daemon supports runtime reporting. The terminal view model uses that timestamp and resume-ledger updates to bind attachments and reconcile settled outcomes, including asynchronous recovery and retry races.

Changes: Runtime-aware terminal attachment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attach acknowledgement and runtime frame contract
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalIpc/AttachAck.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalIpc/FrameType.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalIpc/LocalFrame.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalIpc/FrameCodec.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/LocalIpc/FrameCodecTests.cs
The attach acknowledgement now carries an optional runtime start timestamp. New frame types represent runtime-aware attach requests and runtime-start timestamps. The codec serializes timestamps as UTC ticks and validates their payloads.
Capability-negotiated attachment
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/LocalIpc/AgentAttachClient.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/TerminalAttach.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/AgentOrchestrator.LocalIpc.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/LocalControlCapabilities.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/LocalControlServer.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/AgentOrchestrator.Resume.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/FakeTerminalAttachClient.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/LocalIpc/AgentAttachClientTests.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Services/*
The daemon advertises attach-runtime/1. When supported, the client sends AttachWithRuntime, and the daemon sends the runtime timestamp before the attachment response. Tests cover frame handling, timestamp delivery, and capability advertisement.
Runtime binding and settled-state recovery
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/TerminalTabResumeTests.cs
The view model uses the reported runtime timestamp when available and reads the ledger before dialing when runtime reporting is unavailable. It reconciles settled outcomes and status-triggered recovery against ledger entries, with checks for stale state and concurrent retries.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bc267

During a daemon transition, a terminal may require manual reattachment. The risk is bounded, but a legacy-attach fallback would make the transition reliable.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bc267

The design preserves existing local-access and read-only controls while improving runtime matching. Residual risk concerns daemon-replacement ordering and incompletely verified recovery-data trust assumptions, rather than an identified increase in permissions.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A principal able to open the local control socket can request attachment to any terminal-emitting agent known to that daemon, subject to the existing read-only policy. The desktop recovery path remains restricted to its configured AgentId. The new metadata request does not establish a new tenant, service, or credential authority boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing Unix controls restrict the control socket to mode 0600 and create ledger directories and files with owner-only modes. Ledger filenames hash the wire-supplied AgentId; writes flush a temporary file before replacement. These are existing trust controls, not new protections introduced by runtime reporting. Equivalent Windows restrictions were not established.
  • observed — The existing status client correlates hello and first-snapshot daemon identities when both provide process and instance identifiers. That check protects status negotiation but does not authenticate the separate attachment connection or make capability sampling atomic with attachment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The attachment loop retains atomic replay-snapshot and sink registration, serialized frame writes, overflow-triggered detachment, and final removal of sink and terminal dimensions. Runtime reporting occurs before replay and does not transfer runtime ownership to the client.

Explanation

Issue #1629 has one active direct coding target. The PR adds the attach-runtime/1 capability, AttachWithRuntime, and RuntimeStarted. The daemon sends the agent CreatedAt before Attached, and the terminal binds to that stamp when the connected daemon supports the capability. The terminal retains the ledger fallback for older daemons, reconciles settlement with later ledger entries, and starts status-driven recovery only for a different runtime. Focused tests cover runtime binding, fallback, late rows, retries, interruptions, capability selection, and reattach races.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within Issue #1629. IPC and capability changes implement runtime binding. Terminal changes implement settlement and status-ordering behavior. Test doubles and unit tests support these changes. The AgentOrchestrator.Resume.cs reorder changes documentation order only and adds no unrelated behavior.

High-Level Assessment

The capability-gated request and separate stamp frame are appropriate: they retain plain Attach for older daemons without changing Attached's snapshot-tail encoding. Relying solely on a pre-dial ledger read would retain the race this PR fixes.

Remediation recommended

1. Reattach fails after a daemon downgrade ✓ Resolved
Description
_reportsRuntime stays true when a Connecting or Unreachable status has no capabilities, allowing a
later attach to use the previous daemon's capability after a reconnect. If the replacement does not
advertise attach-runtime/1, the tab sends unsupported AttachWithRuntime without the plain-attach
pre-dial ledger binding or a fallback to Attach, and the attach fails.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[R389-391]

+        _statusSub = daemon.Status.Subscribe(status => {
+            if (status.Capabilities is { } caps) _reportsRuntime = caps.Contains(AgentAttachClient.RuntimeCapability);

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The status subscription updates _reportsRuntime only when capabilities are present, so a
disconnected status with null capabilities leaves the previous value intact. The attach path uses
that value to select AttachWithRuntime and skip the pre-dial ledger read; a daemon without the
extension cannot handle that frame or provide its runtime acknowledgement.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The terminal retains the previous daemon's attach-runtime capability through status updates without capabilities. After reconnecting to a daemon that does not advertise `attach-runtime/1`, it can send an unsupported `AttachWithRuntime` request instead of using the compatible plain attach path.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[389-391]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[604-608]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[678-683]

## Recommended Fix
Reset `_reportsRuntime` when the daemon connection or incarnation changes, and enable it only after the current daemon advertises `attach-runtime/1`. Until then, use plain `Attach` with its legacy pre-dial ledger binding; ensure a reconnect to a daemon without the capability follows that path.

2. A pending recovery can cancel Reattach ✓ Resolved
Description
RecoverIfAnotherRuntimeAsync checks only the settled state after its ledger read, not whether a
new attach has already claimed the opening token. If a user starts Reattach from a Failed tab while
that read is pending, recovery can publish Resuming during the previous client's disposal,
invalidating the user's attempt before it connects.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[R815-816]

+            if (Volatile.Read(ref _resolveState) == ResolveDisposed || State != settled) return;
+            AwaitRetriedResume();
Relevance

●●● Strong

A close precedent accepted guarding reattach against stale outcome publication during disposal and
opening-token races.

PR-#730

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Reattach advances _openingToken before awaiting the old client's disposal, leaving State at
Failed during that wait. The new asynchronous recovery can pass its state-only guard in that
interval; AwaitRetriedResume then publishes with a null owner, invalidating the token that
Reattach checks after disposal.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A pending status-driven ledger read can publish Resuming after a manual Reattach has claimed the opening token but before it publishes Connecting, cancelling that attempt.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[807-817]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TerminalTabViewModel.cs[545-565]

## Recommended Fix
Capture the opening token when scheduling status-driven recovery. Before publishing its result on the UI thread, require that the token still matches, alongside the existing state and disposal checks. Add a test that holds the ledger read while Reattach begins.

3. Comment recounts the old fallback ✓ Resolved
Description
The compatibility test comment says the older daemon is requested and bound “as before,” describing
the previous implementation instead of the current compatibility behavior. A later maintainer
reading this test must infer the intended invariant from change history rather than from a statement
of what the fallback guarantees.
Code

test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/TerminalTabResumeTests.cs[R406-407]

+ /// A daemon that does not report the runtime is asked as before, and the tab keeps binding the one
+ /// the ledger named before dialing.
Relevance

●●● Strong

invariants.

PR-#1328
PR-#1158
PR-#1030

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed comment explicitly describes behavior as being performed “as before,” which is
change-history narration prohibited by the checklist; it should state the current fallback contract
instead.

Rule 2897915: Avoid time-sensitive or process-reference metadata in code comments
test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/TerminalTabResumeTests.cs[406-407]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The added test comment uses historical wording such as “as before” and explains the behavior through the previous implementation. The comment should describe the current compatibility contract without change-history narration.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/TerminalTabResumeTests.cs[406-407]

## Recommended Fix
Rewrite the comment to state that daemons without runtime-reporting capability use the legacy attach and pre-dial ledger binding path, without referring to how the behavior worked previously.

A status-driven read is bound to its attempt, since settled states compare by
value, and the runtime capability is only trusted from the daemon connected now.

A reattach claims the opening token before its generation moves, so a recovery
landing in that window has only the token to tell it the user already acted.

Retry a stale runtime attach as a legacy attach.

If the status stream disconnects after _reportsRuntime is copied but before AgentAttachClient.RunAsync connects, the client still sends AttachWithRuntime. A pre-feature daemon returns an error, which AgentAttachClient maps to AttachOutcome.Failed. TerminalTabViewModel then publishes Failed without retrying Attach.

Retry a pre-attach FrameType.Error from a runtime request with a fresh client using requestRuntime: false. Apply the normal outcome handling to that fallback.
