Closes #775 — AI-2518

What & why

Step 2 of AI-2265. ClaudeTranscriptEvents now produces what the server's ClaudeCodeNormalizer produces, so a later step can have the server call the leaf instead:

  • Usage from message.usage rides the record's first emitted event, with the cache-creation count beside it. A context memory of the last tuple suppresses the repeat Claude Code writes on every block of one response. The memory transitions follow the spec: compare-then-store even when nothing is emitted; no usage or empty content leaves it alone; any other valid record, noise included, clears it; a rejected line touches nothing.
  • Tool results use the server's text rule: a string as is; an array's text blocks joined with a blank line, or its raw JSON when it has none; any other value as raw JSON; unset when absent or null. Anything that wasn't a string is also kept whole as extensions.claude_code.output_raw.
  • Images in a user message, or in a queued prompt's content array, become TranscriptAttachments. A message with images but no text is no longer dropped. Attachment ids count images, not blocks, as the server's persisted blob streams do.
  • Origin fields the server now writes: is_handback, prompt_source, prompt_index, and is_queued with command_mode on queued-command messages.

The Chat tab is unchanged: Core's Claude chat rules rebuild their one-line-per-block result text from output_raw, so the stored blank-line join doesn't reach the chat.

Where to look

  • ClaudeTranscriptEvents.UsageOf holds the memory rule. ResultText holds the server's text rule.
  • Deliberate differences from the server, left for the step that switches the server over:
    • On a line with several tool results, toolUseResult is attributed to none of them. The server's single event carries it on the first, and the chat relies on not misattributing an async launch.
    • Queued commands other than prompt and task-notification stay ignored.
    • Absent extension fields are omitted rather than written as null.
    • The server's cancelled-prompt UserMessageRetracted events aren't produced. That rule was added after the spec.
    • A task-notification queued command with no attachment.origin.kind still gets origin_kind: task-notification, and a queued command whose root line sets isMeta is still meta. The chat recognises task notifications by that origin_kind, and hides meta lines whichever field set them.

Verification

  • ClaudeGoldenTests projects a synthetic transcript and compares it with a golden I reviewed by hand. The transcript covers a multi-block assistant record, a multi-result user record, usage repeated then reset by a noise record, a rejected line, images, origin fields and the fallback id.
  • ClaudeServerParityTests: usage, the usage memory, result text and raw output for each content kind, absent or null results, per-result error flags, image attachments and their ids, queued prompts, origin fields.
  • The leaf suite (228) and Core's chat tests (90) pass. Two existing leaf assertions were updated for the spec'd blank-line join and the new output_raw.

📝 Walkthrough

The Claude transcript projection now includes deduplicated usage, origin metadata, normalized tool results, image attachments, queued messages, and task notifications. Chat rules extract text from raw tool output. Parity tests and fixtures cover these projections.

The change preserves more transcript content without demonstrating broader execution authority. Unusual tool output may interrupt transcript processing, although known callers contain the effect. Downstream attachment storage and access handling remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Optional raw-output preservation now makes the entire record depend on a second JSON parser. If structured tool content passes initial parsing but fails protobuf conversion, Project returns no result: the app drops the record, and an eligible judge turn scan can return unreadable evidence without advancing its saved cursor. The base array fallback did not require this conversion. This is an inferred, bounded availability concern, not a verified authorization bypass; target-version triggering inputs remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated processing scope is the transcript stream, its local chat projection, and session evidence scanning. Newly retained image bytes widen the canonical data surface, but external serialization, blob storage, tenant access, and downstream inheritance were not verified; this scope is not an established upper bound on external exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported concern is input-dependent availability, not increased execution authority: structured tool output reaches a new protobuf conversion before canonical events return. A conversion failure can suppress a record. A broader policy-scan effect additionally requires passing the turn prefilter; compact tool-result records are excluded, and outer handling returns unreadable evidence rather than establishing an allow decision.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected raw-output consumer extracts and caps text for display. Queued transcript messages can participate in receipt reconciliation, but the inspected acknowledgement path requires a matching existing local send; it does not execute the transcript prompt.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate optional raw-output preservation from successful text projection so an unrepresentable raw value cannot invalidate otherwise usable transcript events or repeatedly obstruct evidence-scan progress. Define the fallback against the resolved parser version.

Explanation

The production changes and tests support #775. They implement usage memory, tool-result fields, image attachments, queued prompts, origin fields, identifier data, golden coverage, and Chat compatibility. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

#775 requires every valid attachment record with attachment.type equal to queued_command to produce a user message. QueuedCommand accepts only prompt and task-notification. Its default branch returns null, and Project returns an empty projection for those records. The added parity tests cover only the two accepted modes. The other parity objectives have implementation and test evidence in ClaudeTranscriptEvents, ClaudeServerParityTests, and the golden fixture.

Resolution

Handle every valid queued_command attachment required by #775 as a user message. Preserve its prompt content, metadata, and image attachments according to the specification. Add fixture, golden-file, and unit coverage for each supported command mode, including modes that currently enter the default branch.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Switch the server to the leaf projection now
  • ➕ Eliminates duplicate normalization logic immediately.
  • ➖ Known differences in cancelled prompts, queued commands, and multi-result attribution could change server behavior before they are resolved.

Recommendation: Keep the staged parity approach: the tests establish the leaf's behavior without changing server ingestion yet. Resolve or explicitly accept the remaining differences before switching the server over.

Remediation recommended

1. Queued prompts lose origin metadata ✓ Resolved
Description
ProjectAttachment constructs queued-command origin data with handback, prompt source and prompt
index unset instead of reading those fields from the nested attachment. When those fields occur on a
queued command, kcap-server’s normalizer preserves them but the leaf’s event omits them; it also
reads the attachment’s meta flag where the leaf reads the root flag.
Code

src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Claude/ClaudeTranscriptEvents.cs[R223-226]

+        emitter.Add(0, UserMessage(text, record),
+            ClaudeCodeExtension.Flags(record.IsSidechain, root.Bool("isMeta") == true, queued.OriginKind,
+ origin: new ClaudeCodeExtension.Origin(false, null, null, IsQueued: true, CommandMode: queued.Mode)),
+            attachments);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent Claude projection precedent accepted preserving omitted metadata and meta flags across
attachment paths.

PR-#1045

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The server passes the nested attachment to ReadOrigin, while the leaf supplies empty values for
three origin fields. The server test also establishes that a queued attachment’s nested isMeta is
retained.

2. Type checks bypass shared JSON helpers ✗ Dismissed
Description
QueuedCommand, ProjectAttachment, and ResultText inspect JsonElement.ValueKind directly
instead of using the available extension helpers. String, array, and null handling in these changed
projection paths therefore continues the prohibited comparison pattern.
Code

src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Claude/ClaudeTranscriptEvents.cs[R244-245]

+        if (content is not { } c || c.ValueKind == JsonValueKind.Null) return (null, null);
+        if (c.ValueKind == JsonValueKind.String) return (c.GetString(), null);
Relevance

●●● Strong

A recent accepted precedent explicitly replaced direct ValueKind comparisons with shared JSON
helpers.

PR-#1237

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed code contains direct ValueKind pattern matching and comparisons for string, array, and
null checks, while the checklist requires equivalent JsonElementExtensions helpers.

3. Empty result blocks add lines in chat ✓ Resolved
Description
ChatResultText joins every text block with a newline, including blocks whose text is empty,
whereas the previous result join added a separator only after accumulated text was nonempty. A tool
result with an empty text block before or after a nonempty one therefore gains a leading or trailing
newline in the Chat tab.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Harness/Claude/ClaudeChatRules.cs[R92-96]

+        var texts = blocks.Values
+            .Where(v => v.StructValue is { } b && SchemaExtensions.Text(b, "type") == "text" && SchemaExtensions.Text(b, "text") is not null)
+            .Select(v => SchemaExtensions.Text(v.StructValue, "text")!)
+            .ToList();
+        return texts.Count == 0 ? null : TranscriptEnvelopes.Cap(string.Join("\n", texts));
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedent requires preserving text-block joining semantics, including empty-block edge
cases.

PR-#1318

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
TranscriptText.JoinTextBlocks adds a newline only when its builder already contains text. The new
chat path instead includes empty strings in string.Join, and Filter substitutes that result for
the displayed tool result.

4. Image prompts slow the policy judge ✗ Dismissed
Description
Content base64-decodes every image into a byte array whenever it projects a user or queued prompt.
The policy judge projects candidate user lines to read only their event IDs and text, so scanning
image-heavy transcript chunks now allocates and decodes attachment bytes it never uses.
Code

src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Claude/ClaudeTranscriptEvents.cs[R170-174]

+                    if (block.Obj("source") is { } source && source.Str("type") == "base64"
+                     && source.Str("data") is { } data && source.Str("media_type") is { } mediaType
+                     && Decode(data) is { } bytes) {
+                        var id = TranscriptIds.ClaudeAttachment(record.IdScope, record.Id, attachments.Count);
+                        attachments.Add(new TranscriptAttachment(id, $"attachment-{id.ToString()[..8]}{Extension(mediaType)}", mediaType, bytes));
Relevance

●● Moderate

Performance concern is plausible, but no close precedent confirms rejecting eager attachment
decoding in projections.

PR-#1318

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The judge scans up to 16 MiB per read and calls HumanTurn for candidate user lines. HumanTurn
calls Project but consumes only the resulting event ID and UserMessageReceived.Content; the

5. Subagent images get different blob IDs ✗ Dismissed
Description
Content hashes record.IdScope for Claude image attachments, but kcap-server’s normalizer hashes
the bare session ID. For a subagent transcript, the two paths therefore assign different IDs to the
same image, so switching normalization paths changes the identifier used for its persisted blob.
Code

src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Claude/ClaudeTranscriptEvents.cs[R173-174]

+                        var id = TranscriptIds.ClaudeAttachment(record.IdScope, record.Id, attachments.Count);
+                        attachments.Add(new TranscriptAttachment(id, $"attachment-{id.ToString()[..8]}{Extension(mediaType)}", mediaType, bytes));
Relevance

●● Moderate

Cross-repository identifier parity is architectural and lacks a closely matching historical
acceptance or rejection precedent.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The leaf hashes IdScope, which includes the agent ID for subagent streams; the server keeps that
scope separate but passes SessionId to its attachment-ID derivation.

Informational

6. Zero-count usage disappears from events ✗ Dismissed
Description
UsageOf stores an all-zero usage tuple but returns no usage whenever all four count fields are
absent, even if that tuple differs from the previous one. An assistant record with a nonempty
content array and message.usage: {} consequently emits an event without the usage and model that
the usage-memory rule would otherwise attach.
Code

src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/Harness/Claude/ClaudeTranscriptEvents.cs[R301-304]

+        var tuple      = (input ?? 0, output ?? 0, cacheRead ?? 0, cacheWrite ?? 0);
+        var repeat     = ctx.PreviousUsage == tuple;
+        ctx.PreviousUsage = tuple;
+        if (repeat || input is null && output is null && cacheRead is null && cacheWrite is null) return null;
Relevance

●●● Strong

The finding identifies a deterministic mismatch with the stated usage-memory specification and
should be straightforward to correct.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The code treats missing counts as zero and updates the memory before the all-absent check. The
repository's Claude projection specification says a nonempty assistant record with message.usage
attaches usage when its tuple differs, with absent counts treated as zero.

Review mode: Auto: ⚖️ Balanced: Downgraded extended -> standard: change is below the extended eligibility bar (hunks 14/18, lines 761/200; both must reach the floor). Router rationale: Substantial parity logic spans multiple independent paths with dense edge-case behavior.
