Closes #1647 — AI-3999

What & why

The desktop app's text size is fixed per control, with about 200 hard-coded font sizes, so there was no way to make it larger or smaller. The main window now has a UI scale from 80% to 150% in 10% steps, kept in app-state.json. It magnifies the window's content as a whole, text and layout together, like a browser zoom. Settings gets an Appearance tab with smaller, larger and reset controls. The main window takes ⌘+ / ⌘− on macOS, and Ctrl++ / Ctrl+− / Ctrl+0 elsewhere.

Where to look

  • Terminal focus: the Ctrl shortcuts yield to a focused terminal the way Ctrl+R does, so the shell still receives Ctrl+− and Ctrl+=. The terminal-focus check now lives in a shared helper.
  • No ⌘0 on macOS: the Window menu already uses it, so reset is in Settings there.
  • Not scaled: popups, flyouts and the Settings window keep their size.

Verification

  • UiScaleTests (15) cover clamping, step snapping and the percentage label, plus persistence across a reload and an out-of-range stored value.
  • UiScaleWindowTests (headless):
    • The keyboard shortcuts step the scale and set the window's transform.
    • The Appearance tab steps the scale, disables at the maximum, resets, and follows a change made elsewhere.
  • SettingsWindowSmokeTests, SettingsViewModelTests, AppMenuBarTests, AppStateStoreTests, TerminalClipboardTests, AppStartupTests, WizardStartupTests and MainWindowViewModelTests pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added adjustable interface scaling from 80% to 150%.
    • Added Appearance settings controls to decrease, increase, or reset text size.
    • Added platform-specific keyboard shortcuts for changing and resetting interface scale.
    • Scaling preferences are saved and restored between sessions.
    • Interface layout and minimum dimensions now adapt to the selected scale.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved terminal-focus detection for keyboard interactions.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for scaling behavior, persistence, shortcuts, and settings controls.

Control font sizes are fixed per control, so the main window is magnified as a
whole, text and layout together; menus and flyouts keep their size.

📝 Walkthrough

The app now persists a normalized UI scale and applies it to main-window content. Users can change the scale through keyboard shortcuts or the Appearance settings tab.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 713d5

The new text-scaling feature works as described, but one cleanup gap remains. When the text scale is not 100%, closing a main window leaves a display-change listener attached. Plugging in or removing a monitor, or changing display settings, can then raise an error from the closed window. Removing that listener on close is a small fix and should be done before merging.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 713d5

The change is limited to a bounded display preference. The reviewed paths preserve terminal keyboard handling and do not introduce new access, privileges, or security decisions. Failed or interrupted saves can lose the latest scale preference without changing security controls.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected scale flow affects the current app's main-window presentation and local preference file. It does not connect the new value to permissions, credentials, tenant identity, or privileged commands.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Persisted and interactive scale values pass through finite-value validation, clamping to 80–150%, and step normalization before reaching layout. Control-based zoom shortcuts yield to focused terminals, and the extracted terminal-focus helper preserves the base implementation's visual-ancestor check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing store serializes updates per instance and uses temporary-file replacement rather than exposing partial writes. Write failure leaves the selected scale in memory for the run. Cross-instance locking and fsync durability are not provided; those store limitations predate this PR.

Explanation

Issue [#1647] requires a setting that scales desktop text larger or smaller and preserves the choice. UiScaleSetting.LoadAsync reads the stored value from app-state.json, SetAsync updates and persists it, and MainWindow.ContentScale applies a matching layout transform. Appearance controls expose smaller, larger, and reset actions. UiScaleTests and UiScaleWindowTests cover persistence, bounds, controls, shortcuts, and scaling behavior.

Add persistent main-window text and layout scaling

✨ Enhancement 🧪 Tests 🕐 40+ Minutes

Grey Divider

AI Description

• Add 80%–150% main-window scaling so text and surrounding layout resize together.
• Provide Appearance controls and platform-specific shortcuts, preserving terminal input and macOS’s
 existing ⌘0 binding.
• Persist the scale and test its limits, shortcuts, window transform, and Settings synchronization.

High-Level Assessment

The shared setting and main-window layout transform fit the existing hard-coded control font sizes: text and layout scale together without revising roughly 200 individual sizes. Changing individual styles was considered but would be broader and less likely to preserve consistent layout.

window’s minimum width. At 150% in a 1200-unit-wide window, the launcher’s non-wrapping repository
and machine chip row can exceed its available width, leaving options beyond the window edge.

2. Closed windows remain in memory ✓ Resolved
Description
MainWindow subscribes to Screens.Changed with a handler that captures the window, but its
Closed handler never removes that subscription. When a wizard window closes and the app creates

3. Appearance tab comment repeats its binding ✓ Resolved
Description
The Null hides the Appearance tab comment merely restates the adjacent IsVisible binding instead
of documenting a non-obvious constraint or rationale. A later maintainer gets no additional
behavioral guidance from the comment, so it adds noise without preventing an incorrect change.

5. The onboarding drag strip changes height ✓ Resolved
Description
MainWindow moves OnboardingPaneView inside ScaleHost, scaling the pane’s own 40-unit drag
border while the outer title-bar strip stays unscaled. During onboarding, a zoom below 100% leaves
part of the title-bar-height area unable to start a drag, while a zoom above 100% makes blank space

6. At 80% on Windows, content slides under the caption buttons ✓ Resolved
Description
KeepContentClearOfCaptionButtons sets ContentPane.Margin.Top to WindowDecorationMargin.Top,
which is a fixed size in window coordinates. The PR moves ContentPane inside the new ScaleHost
LayoutTransformControl, so that margin now gets scaled too. Below 100% the inset becomes smaller
than the title bar, and the workspace and launcher headers slide under the minimize/maximize/close
buttons. Above 100% the gap is larger than the title bar. The 40px transparent drag strip is scaled
in the same way, so it no longer matches the real title bar height.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml[R28-31]

+ <LayoutTransformControl x:Name="ScaleHost">
+ <Panel>

Relevance

●●● Strong

Scaling the content also scales fixed window-coordinate caption clearance, causing a concrete
title-bar overlap at 80%.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
ContentPane is a descendant of ScaleHost, and the window applies ScaleTransform(scale, scale)
to it. KeepContentClearOfCaptionButtons copies the unscaled WindowDecorationMargin.Top straight
into ContentPane.Margin, so after rendering the actual inset is Top * scale. At 0.8 that is 20%
shorter than the caption area.

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
ContentPane's top margin is meant to clear the Windows caption buttons. It is set to WindowDecorationMargin.Top, but ContentPane now sits inside the ScaleHost LayoutTransformControl, so the margin gets scaled. At 80% the content overlaps the caption buttons.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml.cs[61-75]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml.cs[148-152]

## Recommended Fix
Combine WindowDecorationMarginProperty with the current scale and set `ContentPane.Margin = new Thickness(0, margin.Top / scale, 0, 0)`. Recompute it whenever either value changes. An alternative is to apply the caption inset outside the LayoutTransformControl, for example as padding on a wrapper. Apply the same treatment to the 40px drag-strip Border, or move it out of ScaleHost.

7. Saved midpoint zoom rounds down ✓ Resolved
Description
UiScale.Normalize divides a binary floating-point value by 0.1 before applying midpoint
rounding, so a value such as 0.95 becomes approximately 9.499999999999998 and snaps to 0.9
rather than 1.0. This occurs when a stored scale falls exactly halfway between supported steps,
despite the requested away-from-zero rounding.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/UiScale.cs[17]

+        return Math.Round(Math.Round(Math.Clamp(value, Min, Max) / Step, MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero) * Step, 2);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Deterministic floating-point midpoint error breaks the documented away-from-zero snapping behavior.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The normalization expression divides by the floating-point Step before rounding. For the valid
midpoint 0.95, that division is slightly below 9.5, so MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero never
receives a midpoint; LoadAsync passes stored scales through this expression.

PR-#1087
PR-#1189

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The window can be 1200 units wide, while its transformed content includes a 330-unit rail. At 1.5×
scale that leaves 470 layout units for the entire right pane, before the launcher and card margins
and padding; the repository and machine chips alone can total 688 units in a horizontal,
non-wrapping row.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
At 150% zoom, the fixed rail and non-wrapping launcher chip row can extend beyond a minimum-width main window.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml[28-35]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/LauncherPaneView.axaml[43-70]
## Recommended Fix
Make the launcher chip row responsive to the width remaining after scaling, such as by wrapping or stacking the chips, and check the workspace’s fixed-width panes at the supported zoom limits.

2. At 80% on Windows, content slides under the caption buttons ✓ Resolved
Description
KeepContentClearOfCaptionButtons sets ContentPane.Margin.Top to WindowDecorationMargin.Top,
which is a fixed size in window coordinates. The PR moves ContentPane inside the new ScaleHost
LayoutTransformControl, so that margin now gets scaled too. Below 100% the inset becomes smaller
than the title bar, and the workspace and launcher headers slide under the minimize/maximize/close
buttons. Above 100% the gap is larger than the title bar. The 40px transparent drag strip is scaled
in the same way, so it no longer matches the real title bar height.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml[R28-31]

+ <LayoutTransformControl x:Name="ScaleHost">
+ <Panel>
+ <Border Height="40" VerticalAlignment="Top" Background="Transparent"
+ PointerPressed="OnChromePointerPressed" />
Relevance

At 0.8 that is 20%
shorter than the caption area.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml.cs[148-152]
src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml[28-35]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description

+        return Math.Round(Math.Round(Math.Clamp(value, Min, Max) / Step, MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero) * Step, 2);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Deterministic floating-point midpoint error breaks the documented away-from-zero snapping behavior.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The normalization expression divides by the floating-point Step before rounding. For the valid
midpoint 0.95, that division is slightly below 9.5, so MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero never
receives a midpoint; LoadAsync passes stored scales through this expression.

src/Capacitor.App/Services/UiScale.cs[9-18]
src/Capacitor.App/Services/UiScaleSetting.cs[15-16]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/UiScale.cs[14-18]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/UiScaleTests.cs[6-15]
## Recommended Fix

🟡 Minor · Keep OnboardingPaneView outside ScaleHost. · MainWindow.axaml:159-162

src/Capacitor.App/Views/MainWindow.axaml:159-162
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep OnboardingPaneView outside ScaleHost.

OnboardingPaneView contains a reachable Border Height="40" that handles window dragging. The changed wrapper applies ScaleTransform to that border, so its effective drag area becomes 32–60 px at the supported 80%–150% scales. This changes the title-bar boundary and can make the onboarding pane capture 20 extra pixels below the 40 px strip at 150%.
