Closes #1628.

What changes

Rebrands the CLI, desktop app, integrations, packaging, downloads, and documentation to kcap. macOS uses kcap.app; the desktop executable is kcap-desktop. Onboarding and About use the original full kcap by Kurrent website wordmark. App/tray icons from #1703 are now merged into main and preserved here; both resource URLs use the renamed desktop assembly.

Verified legacy macOS installs migrate in their existing Applications folder, with destination selection for installer ambiguity and conflicts. Migration uses verified-PID shutdown, transactional bundle replacement, owned CLI/service reference repair, and rollback. Sign-in, settings, internal app/package identities, data paths, worktree locations, and branch prefixes stay stable.

After handoff, the bundled CLI repairs previously installed agent integrations, including MCP-only Codex, Mistral Vibe, same-version Cursor MCP paths, Claude marketplace paths, and existing git hooks. Repair starts after the main window opens. Failed or timed-out repair shows a non-blocking warning and retains a pending record for the next launch; cancellation also preserves it. Strict refresh reports failed integration writes instead of treating incomplete repairs as successful. Customized MCP entries remain untouched; tools-only setups gain no recording hooks. Ordinary canonical app launches keep their selected folder even if another folder retains a legacy app.

Lifecycle dialogs use the app theme and shared left-aligned layout. Existing shared Muse skill URLs remain available through a compatibility stub; canonical skills use kcap names.

Validation

22 focused checks passed sequentially: 12 strict-refresh regressions, 4 Cursor backfill cases, and 6 desktop integration-repair checks. Both relevant test-project builds completed with zero warnings/errors. The MCP stdin example was validated with apostrophes and shell metacharacters, and all three scenario diagrams pass Mermaid parsing. No full test suites were run.

Signed macOS release-upgrade validation and a live Windows upgrade checking Start-menu/desktop shortcuts and taskbar pins remain outstanding. Velopack's pinned updater contains shortcut repair; that source inspection does not replace the live test.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 381f9

The rebrand and macOS migration flow look sound at this head. Destination selection, refresh-retry handling, strict failure reporting, and the connector helper's quoting have been addressed. One narrow edge case remains: a symlinked Codex configuration with an existing MCP record can throw an unhandled error during account wiring instead of being reported as a refresh failure. This is reasonable to merge with owner awareness or a small follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 381f9

Normal migration failures have substantial rollback protection, and integration repair preserves existing recording choices. However, an interruption can leave the new installation in place without durable instructions to finish repairing its integrations. A separate command-execution question remains unresolved; no verified exploit was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new migration does not durably couple bundle retirement to the integration-repair obligation. MoveAsync publishes the target, applies references, and moves legacy roots before its activation callback schedules repair; rollback bookkeeping remains in memory. Process termination after a legacy root is moved but before scheduling can leave a canonical installation with integrations still pointing at the retired path and no pending record. A subsequent canonical launch can skip migration, while RunPendingAsync returns immediately without a marker. Caught-exception rollback does not cover this interruption state. This is an introduced recovery and failure-containment concern, not a verified security exploit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The workflow can affect the selected local Applications installation, matching current-user daemon units, owned CLI symlinks, and previously installed integrations across several coding tools. Service selection spans matching units whose executable points into the migrated roots, not merely the currently displayed workspace. No new tenant authorization is conferred by these inspected operations.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The deferred server-URL injection candidate remains unverified, not an active PR finding. The user-supplied URL instruction already existed in the former connection skill, and the Muse-specific URL restrictions also predate this PR. The new MCP-helper guidance explicitly requires argv execution with shell=False, but that separate control does not resolve how Part A setup instructions are actually executed. The invoking runtime remains a material proof gap.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Reference repair limits changes to exact old-root executable references, validates daemon ownership labels, acquires per-service locks, and detects intervening edits. The inspected MCP writer replaces marker-owned entries while preserving divergent unowned entries. Refresh-only capture gates and the migration handoff test provide counterevidence against silently opting tools-only installations into recording.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Once a valid pending record exists, nonzero exits, timeouts, exceptions, and cancellation preserve the repair obligation. Strict refresh aggregates independent step failures rather than stopping at the first tool, and failed repair produces a nonblocking warning. These controls contain ordinary partial repair failures, but do not cover interruption before the record is created.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give the complete migration a durable recovery record before its first externally visible mutation. Record service state, bundle backups, and the repair obligation together, then reconcile committed or rolled-back state on startup, including pending records whose target was removed.

Explanation

Issue #1628 requirements are implemented for the reviewable code. The PR updates CLI, desktop, integration, skill, documentation, packaging, installer, and download branding. It renames the desktop host to kcap-desktop, preserves stable identifiers and paths, migrates verified legacy macOS bundles, repairs owned references, and recognizes legacy Kiro Crew markers. Focused tests cover these behaviors. The remaining requirement to verify the regenerated DMG background cannot be established because scripts/dmg/background.svg and scripts/dmg/background.tiff are excluded by !**/*.svg and !**/*.tiff. NativeAOT and signed-release validation are stated as incomplete validation, not coding gaps.

Resolution

Provide reviewable evidence for the regenerated DMG background assets, or include those asset changes in the review scope. No further resolution is identified for the other issue requirements.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Rename persistent identifiers and install directories
  • ➕ Creates uniform kcap names throughout the installation.
  • ➖ Breaks existing CLI links and background-service paths.
  • ➖ Requires a more complex migration and risks parallel installations.

Recommendation: Keep the PR's compatibility-first approach: rename visible branding and the distinct desktop executable, but retain stable package identifiers and existing installation paths. A complete identifier migration offers little user benefit relative to its upgrade risk.

Action required

1. Mac upgrades leave the old CLI running ✓ Resolved
Description
The revised macOS instructions tell users to drag kcap.app into Applications, but the in-place
legacy upgrade runs only in RunInstallLocationGuard, which is skipped once the app is already
there. When a user follows those instructions with Kurrent Capacitor.app installed, Finder places
a second bundle beside it and the existing CLI link and background service remain pointed at the old
bundle.
Code

README.md[93]

+Download `kcap-osx-arm64.dmg` from https://www.kurrent.io/download/mac (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later), open it and drag **kcap** to **Applications**. The app bundles its own `kcap` CLI and daemon: you do not need the npm install as well, and the first run offers to link `kcap` onto your terminal PATH and to install the daemon as a background service. Sessions running on your other machines' daemons open in the app too — their chat, their prompts, and for a terminal harness a read-only view of the terminal — over the server, without a local daemon.
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedents prioritize fixing upgrades that leave old services or path-dependent
integrations active.

PR-#1558
PR-#1340

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed instructions specify dragging the newly named app into Applications. The guard returns
immediately for an app already in Applications, while the mover's legacy-path selection is reached
only through that guard; the installation-location contract states that CLI and service paths are
tied to the bundle location.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Dragging the renamed macOS bundle into Applications bypasses the legacy-install migration, leaving existing CLI and service paths on the old bundle.
## Fix Focus Areas
- README.md[91-104]
- src/Capacitor.App/App.axaml.cs[379-413]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationsMover.cs[16-33]
## Recommended Fix
Provide a supported upgrade path that updates the verified legacy bundle in place even when users follow the documented installation steps; adjust the instructions and migration trigger together.

Remediation recommended

2. User-level upgrades install a second app ✓ Resolved
Description
ApplicationsMover.Inspect looks for Kurrent Capacitor.app only under the applications directory
selected by RunInstallLocationGuard, but that caller selects ~/Applications only when a
same-named kcap.app already exists there. When the sole existing installation is
~/Applications/Kurrent Capacitor.app and the new app is launched from the disk image, the mover
instead targets /Applications/kcap.app, leaving the user-level installation and its path-dependent
integrations unchanged.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationsMover.cs[R20-22]

+        var legacyTarget = Path.Combine(applicationsDir, "Kurrent Capacitor.app");
+        if (name == "kcap.app" && !Directory.Exists(target) && !File.Exists(target) && ReadVersion(legacyTarget) is not null)
+            target = legacyTarget;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedents consistently fix installation-path mismatches that leave existing services or
integrations unchanged.

PR-#1558
PR-#1340

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The caller selects the user directory solely by checking for the running bundle's basename there;
the new fallback searches for the legacy name only in the selected directory. Per-user Applications
is an explicitly supported installed location.

src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationsMover.cs[16-26]
src/Capacitor.App/Services/InstallLocation.cs[15-25]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The legacy-bundle fallback cannot find a per-user installation because the caller chooses the destination directory using only the new bundle name.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/App.axaml.cs[384-392]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationsMover.cs[16-22]
## Recommended Fix
Include verified legacy bundles in the directory-selection logic, preferring the existing user-level installation when appropriate, and test an upgrade from ~/Applications/Kurrent Capacitor.app.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Find a legacy installation in the user's Applications directory.

If ~/Applications/Kurrent Capacitor.app exists but ~/Applications/kcap.app does not, this check selects /Applications. ApplicationsMover.Inspect then searches for the legacy bundle in /Applications, so the move can create a second installation instead of updating the user's existing bundle and preserving its CLI and service paths. Check both bundle names when selecting the applications directory.

User-facing changelog

Current implementation: 381f9cd7. Screenshots render the actual Avalonia windows with sample versions and paths.

  • Kurrent Capacitor becomes kcap throughout the CLI, desktop app, integrations, packaging, and documentation. The terminal command stays kcap; the Mac app is kcap.app.
  • Fresh Mac installs default to /Applications. Opening the disk image offers installation before normal use.
  • Existing installs keep their Applications folder. A legacy Kurrent Capacitor.app migrates to kcap.app in /Applications or ~/Applications, with its owned terminal links and background-service paths updated. The installed app then refreshes previously installed agent integrations to repair MCP commands, git hooks, and Claude marketplace paths. The app stays usable during repair. Failed repair shows a warning and is retried on the next launch.
  • Quit and update closes the installed app gracefully and keeps supported daemon sessions for resumption. Sign-in, settings, and profiles remain intact. Active turns are interrupted; automatic resumption respects daemon.auto_resume.
  • Choose a destination when an installer finds installations in both Applications folders or another app occupies the destination. An ordinary launch of a canonical installed copy keeps its folder when that folder needs no migration, even if another folder retains a legacy copy. Unrelated apps and terminal commands are not replaced.
  • Open installed copy uses an equal or newer canonical installation instead of downgrading it. Legacy migration also preserves the newest available bundle.
  • Cleanup follows a verified handoff. Legacy and redundant installer copies are removed after the replacement is opened successfully. Failures restore the installation where possible; incomplete recovery retains backups and reports the problem.
  • Existing integrations remain opted in as before. Repair includes MCP-only Codex installations and Mistral Vibe, and fixes same-version Claude marketplace paths. It preserves customized MCP entries and adds no recording hooks to a tools-only setup. Previously shared Muse skill URLs redirect to connect-kcap.
  • The onboarding and About wordmark is the original kcap by Kurrent website asset. The updated app/tray icons from #1703 are now in main and are preserved by this branch.
  • Install, update, selection, and recovery dialogs use the app theme, including the destination dropdown and error panel. Install, update, already-installed, and conflict states have distinct illustrations.

Validation: 34 focused checks passed sequentially (16 CLI, 15 desktop, 3 core); all three builds completed with zero warnings/errors. Signed macOS upgrade and live Windows shortcut/pin validation remain outstanding.

Screenshots

The pushed shared layout left-aligns illustrations, titles, and copy across every lifecycle prompt, including onboarding and settings. Body copy uses one or two paragraphs; paths are selectable monospace text. Fresh installation uses a folder badge, and legacy migration is titled Upgrade to kcap. Idle install and update badges use neutral colors.

The recovery error is one paragraph. Additional lifecycle screenshots are also available in the separate gallery comment.

Installation and migration behavior

Current implementation: 381f9cd7. Existing per-user installations stay in ~/Applications. Lifecycle screenshots remain in the changelog and separate gallery.

Entry points and destination selection

Scenario Result
Fresh installation launched from the DMG or Downloads Offer installation before normal use; default to /Applications/kcap.app. The user can quit instead.
One verified legacy installation in /Applications Migrate it to /Applications/kcap.app.
One verified legacy installation in ~/Applications Keep that folder and migrate it to ~/Applications/kcap.app.
The new build is running from the legacy bundle path after an in-app update Offer migration to the canonical kcap.app path.
A new kcap.app was dragged beside a legacy bundle Use the newest verified payload, migrate owned references, then retire the legacy copy after the new app opens.
An installer or legacy app finds verified installations in both Applications folders Ask which folder to use. Nothing proceeds until a destination is selected. The selected folder's plan determines whether to update or open its installed copy.
An unrelated or unverifiable kcap.app occupies the proposed destination Offer a destination choice. Selecting the occupied folder keeps installation disabled; selecting a usable folder allows its install/upgrade plan. The unrelated app is never overwritten.
An unverified legacy-named bundle exists It is not adopted or deleted as a verified legacy installation.
The selected per-user Applications folder does not exist Create it before staging the installation.
Canonical kcap.app is already installed and the source is newer Offer Quit and update, stage and verify the replacement, then update atomically.
Canonical installed version is equal or newer Offer Open installed copy; do not copy over or downgrade it.
A legacy bundle or an already-dragged canonical copy is newer than the download Migration chooses the newest verified payload rather than downgrading.
An older download or installer is opened while a newer installed copy exists Use installation selection/open-installed handling and avoid downgrading.
A canonical app is explicitly opened from its Applications folder, and that folder needs no migration Start that copy without a destination prompt, even if the other folder contains a canonical or legacy installation.
Both folders initially contained legacy apps, and one has been migrated Keep the other legacy copy untouched; opening the migrated canonical app does not repeatedly ask for a destination.
A successful installer handoff launches the replacement The internal handoff skips repeating the install-selection prompt in that new process.
Windows or an unbundled development build The macOS bundle migration does not run. Windows keeps its package identity and install folder. Live validation of the executable rename, shortcuts, and taskbar pins is still required.

Running apps, services, links, and saved state

Scenario Result
The installed desktop app is running Identify the matching executable by PID, request its normal quit, and wait for verified exit before copying. Do not target by bundle identifier or path. Unknown identity, refusal, or timeout stops the operation; the installer itself is excluded.
An installed desktop copy starts while staging is in progress Refuse replacement and remove the staged copy.
A service unit points into a bundle being retired or updated Acquire that daemon's service transaction lock, snapshot the unit, and inspect its loaded state. Preserve its arguments and environment while repointing the bundled executable path when necessary.
An affected daemon is running Request a keep-agents shutdown and wait for its PID-file cleanup before unloading its service. Refused, unsupported, or timed-out preservation stops the migration rather than force-ending its sessions.
Several affected service units exist for this user Process them under per-service locks; reload and verify those that were loaded.
A service was already unloaded Update its path without loading it during the migration transaction. Normal application startup still follows the existing lifecycle policy.
A terminal kcap symlink resolves into a retired bundle Repoint it to the CLI inside the selected kcap.app. Check ownership again before replacement.
The terminal link already points at the unchanged canonical path Leave it in place.
A regular file, npm installation, or foreign symlink owns the terminal command Leave it untouched.
A protected owned terminal link needs elevated access macOS may request administrator approval. Failure or cancellation triggers rollback.
Installed MCP integrations, Claude marketplace registration, and git hooks After handoff, use the bundled CLI to refresh previously installed integrations. Include MCP-only Codex and Mistral Vibe; refresh same-version Claude paths. Keep user-customized MCP entries. The app-specific refresh does not run daemon service refresh.
Integration repair fails or is interrupted Keep the app usable and show a non-blocking warning. Retain the pending-repair record and retry when the installed app launches again. Clear the record only after successful strict refresh.
Sign-in, settings, profiles, daemon names, and session state Keep their existing stores and identities. Migration changes app location and owned executable references.
Agent resumption is supported and auto-resume is enabled The replacement daemon uses the saved resume state. Active turns are interrupted during the explicit installer update.
daemon.auto_resume is disabled Preserve that setting; do not promise automatic agent resumption.

Failure and recovery paths

Failure Result
Source cannot be verified Block installation without replacing an existing app.
Copy fails, times out, is cancelled, or produces an incomplete bundle Remove the staged copy; retain the existing installation.
Installed version/plan changes while copying, or a destination appears unexpectedly Abort rather than overwrite a different installation.
Another service operation holds a required lock, a service file changes, or service state cannot be established Fail without treating uncertain state as success; restore already-prepared services where possible.
An affected daemon refuses preservation or fails to exit in time Abort; keep the app bundles and references intact, and recover prepared services where possible.
Atomic promotion or swap fails Keep the existing bundle and roll back prepared references/services.
Repointing a unit/link fails, or a daemon fails to start or answer hello Restore bundles, original unit contents and owned links, then restart the services that were stopped.
Replacement launch is not confirmed Close a replacement that started, if possible, and roll back.
Rollback is needed after the replacement daemon started Keep its resumable agents and unload it before restoring the original bundles and references. Restore terminal links before restarting the old daemon.
A replacement app/daemon cannot be stopped safely for rollback Retain the new installation and recovery backups and report the problem. Do not delete executables needed by a running replacement.
Another process changed a reference during recovery, or a restore step fails Preserve recovery backups and report incomplete restoration rather than claiming success or clobbering the changed reference.
Integration refresh fails after handoff Keep the new installed bundle and the pending-repair record. This is a repair retry, rather than rollback of already refreshed integration configs. Reopening the installed app retries it.
Temporary terminal-link cleanup is denied Log the leftover temporary link without replacing the primary migration error.
Backup deletion fails after a successful handoff The new installation remains usable; leftover backup cleanup is logged.

Verification is focused on temporary app bundles and test service responses, including real macOS ditto copying and atomic swaps. It does not replace a signed-release upgrade exercise against a live installed app and daemon.

Compatibility links and release checks

The canonical skill is connect-kcap. The old connect-capacitor/SKILL.md URL remains an explicit compatibility redirect for already-shared Muse instructions; it is excluded from the installed shared skill list. The guided tour and connection skill recognize Capacitor wording. Onboarding/About use the existing full website wordmark; the app/tray icons from #1703 are now merged into main and preserved here.

Windows release validation must install the previous Capacitor build, retain its Start-menu/desktop shortcuts, pin it to the taskbar, apply the kcap update through the normal updater, and check all three launch routes, the visible name/icon, app launch, and subsequent update behaviour. Repeat on Windows 10 and 11. The pinned Velopack updater repairs missing shortcut targets and scans pinned shortcuts; this source check does not replace that live test.

34 focused checks passed sequentially (16 CLI, 15 desktop, 3 core); all three builds completed with zero warnings/errors.

Checked this against a repo-wide audit of the old name: user-visible copy, MCP and session-start text, help, packaging and the desktop app are covered, and what remains (bundle id, Velopack pack id, .capacitor/worktrees, the capacitor/ branch prefix, skill names, legacy kapacitor matchers) reads as deliberate compatibility. Two notes on skill triggers inline.

Non-blocking: the docs links (www.kurrent.io/docs/capacitor/… in guided-tour and AppMenuBar.DocsUrl, plus the capacitor.kurrent.io setup-server and privacy links) all still resolve today. kurrent-io/kcap-web is moving the docs to /docs/kcap/ with 301s from the old paths, so these can move once that ships.

Compatibility scope — status as of 19 October 2026, 17:14 UTC, at commit 3738aa3e.

I wanted to confirm the scope of the rebrand before finalising this PR. I don’t have a strong preference either way: the question is whether we can treat this as a fresh start, including for current users, or whether we need to support a graceful migration. That could mean additional compatibility logic and upgrade testing for a relatively small existing user base.

What the PR currently delivers

The PR updates the visible branding across the CLI, desktop app, integrations, documentation, and downloads to kcap. On macOS, the app is named kcap.app; kcap-desktop is the desktop executable, with the CLI and daemon bundled inside the app.

It also implements migration from verified legacy Mac app installations to kcap.app, preserving the existing Applications location and settings/sign-in identities. Owned CLI links and service references follow the app, with process shutdown, restart checks, and rollback on failure. Lifecycle dialogs now share the app’s theme, layout, illustrations, and revised copy; screenshots and the scenario walkthrough are linked below.

What remains unchanged

The PR retains the bundle ID io.kurrent.capacitor, Velopack package ID and Windows install folder KurrentCapacitor, .capacitor/worktrees, the capacitor/ branch prefix, skill names such as connect-capacitor and capacitor-recording, Muse VM paths, legacy kapacitor matchers, and the web_device_id_capacitor telemetry property. Where these define identities or resource names, they still apply to new installations/resources too. The legacy matchers remain compatibility readers for older integrations.

So the current implementation is a visible rebrand plus Mac app migration, with stable underlying identities and existing naming defaults. It does not yet rename those identities or introduce kcap defaults throughout newly created resources.

What we could do next

  1. Start clean: adopt kcap identities, paths, and skill names throughout. Current users would follow a documented reinstall/setup process, with guidance for existing worktrees and integrations. This reduces compatibility code but requires manual work and may require signing in or configuring integrations again.
  2. Graceful migration: adopt the new identities and names while automatically transitioning existing installations and references. This gives current users a smoother upgrade, but requires more migration logic, recovery handling, and testing across supported platforms.
  3. New defaults with legacy support: use kcap names for newly created worktrees, branches, and skills while keeping existing resources working where they are. Keep application/package IDs stable for now. This avoids moving existing work but leaves us supporting both conventions.

Option 3 would still go further than this PR currently does: today, the old internal naming defaults remain in place even for new users. Option 1 would instead require an explicit manual transition for existing users and would allow us to remove more legacy support.

The branch has been rebased onto main, the Windows test’s path-separator mismatch has been corrected, and the desktop/test builds plus 14 focused checks passed locally. CI is rerunning after the push; signed-release/live upgrade validation remains outstanding.

Changelog and install screenshots · Scenarios and diagrams · Other lifecycle dialogs

Awaiting a decision on the migration/compatibility scope before extending the rebrand further. I wanted to confirm whether we can assume a fresh start for current users, or whether preserving a seamless upgrade is a requirement, before finalising the PR.

Rebrand scope confirmed — 20 October 2026, 10:05 UTC. Delivered in 9c58edaf.

Following Alexey’s feedback and the subsequent scope decision, we’re proceeding with the user-facing kcap rebrand while preserving existing storage conventions and internal identities. Configuration filenames, data/home directories, .capacitor/worktrees, the capacitor/ branch prefix, app/package IDs, and the telemetry property stay unchanged, including for new installations. Existing legacy integration matchers remain. We are not adding a separate home-directory or identity migration to this PR.

The existing Mac app migration to kcap.app remains part of the PR, including updating owned CLI/service references and retaining settings and sign-in identities. This decision closes the scope question raised in the earlier compatibility comment.

What the latest commit delivers

  • Renames the connection skill to connect-kcap (kcap-connect-kcap when installed into the shared agent skill tree) and the Muse recording skill to kcap-recording. Updates packaged paths, CLI help, and documentation together.
  • Adds the old kcap-connect-capacitor installation to the installer’s existing retired-skill cleanup, so refreshing skills installs the new name and removes the old one.
  • Renames the Muse companion skill to kcap. Upgrade instructions replace the old skills and reuse existing scheduled tasks, retaining data locations and recording consent rather than creating duplicate recorders.
  • Keeps recognition of the former Capacitor name in the connection and guided-tour skill descriptions, and removes the duplicate setup phrase.
  • Updates the remaining local-server restart/reconnect messages in the desktop app to say kcap.
  • Documents the compatibility scope in the README.
  • Corrects the onboarding test behind the latest Windows CI failure: it now waits for the scheduled CanExecute notification instead of reading the cached busy value. Production onboarding behavior is unchanged.

Validation: CLI core and desktop test-project builds completed with zero warnings/errors. Seven focused skill checks and three focused desktop checks passed sequentially on macOS. The pushed commit will be validated by CI on the supported platforms; Windows success is not yet confirmed. Signed-release/live upgrade validation remains outstanding.

Use kcap in the setup instructions.

The quick-start still says setup asks whether to run “Capacitor locally on this Mac.” The unattended-setup table repeats “Capacitor” at Lines 394 and 398. These names conflict with the kcap setup description at Line 258. Update all three user-facing references; keep the documented legacy identifiers in the compatibility section.

kcap rebrand FAQ — expected behaviour and troubleshooting

As of 20 October 2026, commit 381f9cd. This describes the proposed rebrand behaviour.

What changes for me?

What is the product called now?
kcap. The desktop app, CLI messages, integrations, documentation, and download names use the new branding. The terminal command remains kcap.

Is this a new account or a fresh installation?
No. The scope is a visible rebrand with migration of the macOS app bundle. Existing settings, sign-in, configuration files, data directories, and worktrees are retained. No manual reinstall or data-directory migration is required just for the rebrand.

Why can I still see “Capacitor” in paths or internal identifiers?
Those names are intentionally retained, including the macOS bundle ID io.kurrent.capacitor, Windows package ID/install folder KurrentCapacitor, .capacitor/worktrees, and capacitor/ branch prefixes. Existing configuration filenames, Muse data paths, compatibility matchers, and an internal telemetry property also remain. These conventions apply to new installations too; this PR does not introduce a second storage layout.

Installing and upgrading

Where does the macOS app go?
The canonical name is kcap.app. A fresh installation normally uses /Applications/kcap.app. An existing installation stays in its Applications folder, including ~/Applications for a per-user installation. /Applications is shared on the Mac; ~/Applications belongs to the current user. If the installer finds valid installations in both locations, or a destination conflict, it asks which folder to use. An ordinary launch of a verified canonical kcap.app honours the explicitly opened copy when its own folder needs no legacy migration; it does not repeatedly ask for a destination.

What happens to Kurrent Capacitor.app?
A verified legacy installation is migrated to kcap.app. The update flow asks before quitting the installed app and restarting its daemon, and updates owned terminal links and background-service references. After handoff, the installed app refreshes previously installed integrations to repair MCP commands, git hooks, and Claude marketplace paths, including MCP-only Codex and Mistral Vibe setups. A marketplace path is repaired even when the version has not changed. Redundant copies involved in that migration are retired after the replacement is confirmed open. This is not a blanket cleanup of every copy on disk.

Can opening an older download downgrade my installation?
The migration chooses the newest verified payload among the copies it considers. An equal or newer canonical installation offers Open installed copy instead of replacing it with an older download.

Does this affect running sessions?
An app replacement can quit the desktop app and restart its daemon. The migration requests preservation of supported agent sessions; resumption also depends on the session type and the daemon.auto_resume setting. Treat the update as a restart, rather than a promise of uninterrupted activity.

Do I need a separate CLI or daemon installation?
The desktop app bundles both. First run offers to make the bundled kcap available in the terminal. A separate npm installation is not required for desktop use. An independently installed CLI can still exist; migration only repairs links and service references that point into the app bundles being migrated.

What happens on Windows?
Windows uses the same rebranded desktop UI. The installer is named kcap-<version>-win-x64-Setup.exe, the Start-menu entry is kcap, and the desktop executable is kcap-desktop.exe. Installation remains per user under %LocalAppData%\KurrentCapacitor; the stable package identity preserves the existing update relationship. The macOS Applications-folder migration does not apply to Windows.

What about Linux or terminal-only users?
The CLI remains kcap, with rebranded output and documentation. Existing configuration and storage conventions remain. There is no macOS app-bundle migration on those installations.

Do agent integrations need updating?
The connection skill is now connect-kcap (kcap-connect-kcap in the shared agent skill tree), and the Muse recording skill is kcap-recording. Refreshing the relevant integrations replaces the retired installed skill names. Muse setup reuses existing scheduled tasks while retaining data and consent. Legacy-name matchers remain so existing integrations can still be recognized. Previously shared connect-capacitor/SKILL.md links remain available as compatibility redirects to the canonical connect-kcap skill.

Troubleshooting

The destination already contains another kcap.app. Will it be overwritten?
An unverified or unrelated destination is blocked. Choose another Applications folder, or inspect and move the conflicting item aside in Finder. The migration does not replace an unrelated app or unrelated CLI command.

The app cannot quit, copy, or reopen the replacement. What should I do?
Follow the error shown in the dialog. If an installed copy cannot quit, quit it and retry. For a permissions error, check access to the selected folder. For an incomplete download, download it again. The migration attempts rollback on failure; if recovery cannot finish, it retains backups and reports the relevant paths. Keep those backups and the error details until recovery is complete.

The app reports that integrations could not be refreshed.
The app bundle has been installed or upgraded, but an integration repair failed or timed out. The app remains usable and shows a warning; repair runs after the main window opens. Reopen that installed copy to retry. kcap retains the pending repair until all required repairs succeed, and logs the underlying error for troubleshooting. Customized or unclaimed MCP entries are preserved; if one still points into the old bundle, update that entry manually.

There are still two installations. Will the app keep asking me to choose?
Opening a canonical kcap.app whose own folder needs no migration uses that copy. A legacy installation in the other Applications folder is left untouched. Opening an installer, a legacy app, or a conflicting destination can still require a choice.

kcap is missing, or the terminal runs a different version.
Open the installed app and use its CLI-link setup. Start a new terminal, then check which -a kcap on macOS/Linux or where.exe kcap on Windows, followed by kcap --version. Multiple results can indicate a separate CLI installation earlier on PATH. Do not delete an unrelated installation just because migration left it untouched.

Recording or sign-in appears broken after the upgrade.
Check kcap status and kcap whoami first. A rejected token calls for kcap login; a missing or incorrect workspace calls for kcap setup. After refreshing agent hooks, start a new coding-agent session so it loads them. The rebrand itself does not require clearing settings or signing out.

What information helps diagnose a migration problem?
Include the OS version, old/new app versions, launched app path, selected destination, exact dialog error, and CLI resolution/version. Note whether both Applications folders contain installations and whether the CLI was installed separately. Redact credentials and private workspace details before posting diagnostics.

Branding assets

Does this PR replace the app and tray icons too?
Onboarding and About use the existing full kcap by Kurrent website logo. The app and tray icons come from PR #1703, now merged into main. This branch preserves those icons alongside the full website wordmark.

Current PR head: 381f9cd7, rebased onto main e17f9439. Snapshot: 20 October 2026, 13:39 UTC.

The latest commit addresses the verified review findings:

  • Integration repair runs after the main window opens. Failures and timeouts show a warning and keep the app usable; the underlying error is logged. The pending record survives failure or cancellation and clears only after a successful repair.
  • Strict migration refresh records failed hook, MCP-bridge, instruction, and hook-root writes. Ordinary refresh remains best effort. Codex ownership-probe validation failures are reported normally, and symlinked targets remain untouched.
  • The connection skill uses stdin/file input for JSON arguments and an argv list for MCP processes. Apostrophes and shell syntax stay literal data. The small TempDir.PathTo cleanup is included.

The conflict with main in Cursor backfill tests is resolved, retaining main's frozen clock together with the branch's redaction-budget coverage. Explicit launches of an installed kcap.app keep their folder; legacy copies elsewhere do not trigger repeated prompts. DMG/download and same-folder legacy migration still receive the migration flow.

Validation: 22 focused checks passed sequentially on this rebased branch: 12 CLI strict-refresh cases, 4 Cursor backfill cases, and 6 desktop repair/retry cases. Both test-project builds completed with zero warnings/errors. The JSON input example and all three Mermaid diagrams were validated. Full suites were not run locally; CI runs on the pushed head. Live signed macOS upgrade and Windows shortcut/taskbar-pin upgrade validation remain outstanding.

Updated the changelog, scenarios and diagrams, and FAQ. Existing screenshot attachments are preserved. The app/tray icons merged in #1703 and the full website wordmark remain in place.

Comment thread kcap/skills/connect-kcap/SKILL.md Resolved
Comment thread src/Capacitor.App/App.axaml.cs Resolved
Keep the desktop host distinct from the bundled CLI and preserve persistent
identifiers and installation paths so existing upgrades and hooks still work.
Find verified legacy bundles before allowing an installed copy to start.
Keep CLI links and services pointed at the upgraded installation.
Request graceful termination by PID and wait for confirmed exit before replacing a bundle. Keep idle install and update badges neutral, use a folder badge for installation, and label legacy migration as an upgrade.

@coderabbitai review

Please review the latest head, 381f9cd74f40bdcbe2376642c7f76494440f8426, and approve the PR if there are no remaining blocking findings. Your previous review still requests changes on the older 7a9d8f25 commit.

The verified findings have been addressed and each thread has a reply. The cross-folder migration suggestion was intentionally declined: explicitly opening an installed kcap.app keeps that folder, while DMG/download and same-folder legacy migration retain their existing flows. The contradictory test expectations were corrected.

The branch is rebased on main, the Cursor conflict is resolved, and 22 focused checks passed sequentially. CLI and desktop test-project builds completed without warnings or errors. The PR description, FAQ, scenarios, and Mermaid diagrams reflect the current behavior.
