AI-3820 (existing Linear tracking; no GitHub issue)

What & why

Interrupt (Esc) beside Send stops the current turn while keeping the session, draft, and staged files available. Escape works from the composer or conversation. Running remote terminal sessions also offer interruption when the server has no turn details.

Where to look

The button and keyboard share one availability rule: a working turn or Running with unknown turn details, a writable channel that can interrupt, and no pending prompt or terminal menu. The shortcut stays on the button when the composer hint is shortened. Pending cards retain their own keyboard handling.

Verification

23 focused tests passed sequentially with --maximum-parallel-tests 1 in Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit: 18 composer cases, two local button/keyboard interactions, two remote UI interactions, and one remote channel case. The remote cases cover Escape delivery, draft preservation, idle state, and connection loss; both failed before the fix. Build and diff checks passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an Interrupt button for active chat turns. It is unavailable when the agent is awaiting a response or a prompt, menu, or usage limit needs attention.
    • Press Escape to interrupt a running turn from the composer or chat list. Modified Escape shortcuts do not trigger interruption.
    • Interrupting keeps your draft and staged attachments in the composer.

📝 Walkthrough

The chat view model now exposes interruption availability based on participant and agent state. The composer displays an Interrupt button when available. Escape can interrupt a working turn under defined event conditions. Tests cover availability, keyboard behavior, and retaining the draft and staged attachment.

ShowsInterrupt is true when interruption is supported, the participant is writable, no terminal menu is active, and the agent is working or has a running unknown turn. The Interrupt button and command use this availability. Tests cover availability and states that disable interruption.

Composer Escape remains consumed. View-level Escape attempts interruption only when the event is unhandled, unmodified, and outside a pending card. Tests cover keyboard and button interruption, draft retention, and staged attachment retention.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 781f7

The Interrupt (Esc) button and the Escape shortcut share one availability rule and keep the draft and staged files intact. No outstanding issues remain before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 92acc

The new controls use the existing interruption operation and tighten when it is available. No new permission bypass or cross-session access was established. Risk is limited by the existing session-bound input channel, although repeated interruption and failure recovery were not verified end to end.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated additional reachability is user interaction within the current chat view. The interruption operation remains bound to that view model's input; the inspected paths do not introduce caller-selected session identity or broader privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The button and keyboard paths converge on the same command rather than bypassing its eligibility check. Tests exercise permission requests, questions, terminal dialogs, and blocked usage limits and assert that these states disable interruption.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The terminal sink retains capability, cancellation, and opening-token checks around its wait for outstanding delivery. These existing controls limit stale-terminal delivery; they do not establish end-to-end duplicate suppression or turn-level idempotency.

Show an interrupt control for working chat turns

✨ Enhancement 🧪 Tests 🕐 20-40 Minutes

AI Description

• Show an Interrupt button when a working turn can accept an interrupt.
• Route unmodified Escape from the chat view to the same command, preserving drafts and attachments.
• Test visibility, prompt exclusions, keyboard routing, and button behavior.

High-Level Assessment

Reusing the input channel’s interrupt capability and one eligibility gate for the button and command avoids duplicating interrupt rules or adding a global shortcut. The stated composer-hint suffix is not in the diff; add it if that remains part of the intended scope.

Remediation recommended

1. Remote running turns lose interruption ✓ Resolved
Description
ShowsInterrupt requires AgentStatusKind.Working, but a running session with unknown turn
metadata is classified as Other even when its input channel can send Escape. Remote sessions omit
the live-subagent count, so when AwaitingInput is also unknown, the new condition hides the button
and disables InterruptCommand for those running sessions.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[681]

+                (can, readOnly, menu, status) => can && !readOnly && !menu && status.Kind == AgentStatusKind.Working)
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted precedent explicitly treats Running with unknown turn metadata as in-flight, matching this
remote interruption bug.

PR-#1346

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Remote session construction leaves LiveSubagents null; the working-status predicate does not
accept a running session when both turn metadata fields are unknown. The presentation explicitly
recognizes that state as running with an unknown turn, while the remote input can independently
accept an Escape interrupt.

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Running remote sessions with unknown turn metadata are classified as `Other`, so the new status gate disables interruption despite a capable input channel.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[676-684]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/AgentStatusPresentation.cs[14-16]

## Recommended Fix
Allow `ShowsInterrupt` when the status is either `Working` or a running session with an unknown turn, while retaining the input-capability, read-only, and terminal-menu gates. Add a test for a running terminal-backed remote session with null `AwaitingInput`.

2. Remote users cannot see the Esc hint ✓ Resolved
Description
The new Auto interrupt column takes width from the hint’s only flexible column, while
ComposerHint appends “Esc to interrupt” at the end of text that is trimmed with an ellipsis. At
the window’s minimum width, a remote chat shares space with the session rail and a 320px context
column, leaving too little room for the hint’s final words even though the interrupt button is
visible.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[R424-426]

+ <Button x:Name="InterruptButton" Grid.Column="2" Classes="kcapChip" Content="Interrupt"

Evidence
The minimum window is 1200px wide. The main rail reserves 330px and the remote view reserves another

intrinsic-width Auto column, while the appended shortcut is at the end of an ellipsized TextBlock in

Changelog

  • Use Interrupt (Esc) beside Send, or press Esc from the message box or conversation, to stop the current turn and keep the session open.
  • Your draft and staged attachments stay ready to use.
  • The shortcut stays visible on the button even when the composer hint is shortened.
  • Running remote terminal sessions also offer interruption when detailed turn status is unavailable.

@coderabbitai review

Please re-review 92acc7b, rebased on main cae0baa.

Escape and the Interrupt button now share the same availability rule. The button reads Interrupt (Esc), keeping the shortcut visible when the normal composer hint is shortened. Drafts and staged attachments are preserved.

All 24 focused tests passed sequentially; both waiting-state keyboard regressions failed before the fix and pass afterward. The PR description and user-facing changelog are up to date.

Please resolve verified findings and approve if no blockers remain.

Please review 781f775 and approve if no blockers remain.

Running remote terminal sessions now retain Interrupt and Escape when turn metadata is unknown. Two real remote UI regressions failed before the fix and pass afterward; they verify button/keyboard delivery, draft preservation, and disabling on idle or connection loss. All 23 focused tests passed sequentially.

The accepted shortcut placement is Interrupt (Esc) on the button, as described in the updated PR description and changelog. I replied to the hint-suffix thread with that requirement and its layout rationale.
