Closes #1506 — AI-3812

What & why

A hosted agent that pushes capacitor/agent-… as HEAD:fix/… without an upstream never gets its PR on the desktop card or the session page: gh pr view searches by the local name and the tracked-branch fallback needs an upstream. When both miss, the watcher now lists the user's open PRs and links the one whose head is the nearest commit in HEAD's last 100.

Where to look

Only open PRs qualify, and commits on any remote's default branch are skipped, so a checkout cut from main links neither the merged PR behind its tip nor an open PR from main. A nearest commit heading two PRs links neither. Misses are not cached: the PR is usually opened after the push, at the same commit. It costs one extra gh pr list per minute for a session with no PR, within the existing detection budget. A checkout stacked on another open PR links that PR until its own exists. The server side (link on declare_work_item by pr_number) is AI-3813.

Verification

  • In the PR Keep one workspace view per window across session switches #1500 worktree (local capacitor/agent-c3ffb29d35e34a, head fix/retain-workspace-view, no upstream): gh pr view → no pull requests found; the history match → #1500, the only match.
  • Open PR heads in origin/main's last 100 commits: 0.
  • GitHubPrDetectorTests 25/25, ProviderBudgetSplitTests 5/5, TrackedBranchTests 16/16; Release publish shows no IL warnings.

Matching by HEAD's history rather than HEAD itself keeps the link while a local commit
sits on top of the pushed head; only open PRs qualify, so a checkout on main links nothing.

📝 Walkthrough

GitHub pull request detection now checks local commit history after branch-based detection returns no result. It matches open same-repository pull requests to commits among the latest 100 commits and uses the remaining provider time budget.

Changes: History-based pull request detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Match open pull requests against local history
src/Capacitor.Cli/PrDetection/PrDetector.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/PrDetection/GitHubPrDetectorTests.cs
GitHubPrDetector matches open pull request head OIDs against up to 100 commits from HEAD. It returns the nearest matching PR only when the head uniquely identifies a PR. Tests cover matches, ambiguous heads, invalid inputs, and unavailable or malformed command results.
Wire history lookup as a provider fallback

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ab15b

In a checkout without a remote default-branch ref, a session could link an unrelated PR. The affected configuration is narrow, but the link should be checked before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ab15b

The lookup is constrained to the signed-in GitHub user's open PRs in one repository. However, missing local default-branch references can allow an unrelated ancestor PR to become the session's association or review default. No authorization bypass is established; recovery of an incorrect persisted link remains uncertain.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: History matching does not require a known remote default-branch tip. When remote HEAD references are absent, an ordinary ancestor can match the user's open PR even though it is unrelated to the checkout's work. This newly inferred identity can seed a lifetime-cached review default or a session-link POST. The local linker only records successful additions; server-side correction or removal is unverified. Repository and author restrictions limit the exposure, and no unauthorized access is demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Someone able to manipulate the inspected checkout's history or remote identity can influence fallback association. Per lookup, candidate selection is bounded to the derived repository and the authenticated GitHub user's open PRs. The demonstrated downstream scope is session PR metadata and default review-context selection; broader tenant access or privilege gain is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is conditional identity misassociation: both earlier lookups miss, default-branch exclusion has no local reference tip, and an eligible open PR heads a remaining ancestor. The fallback can then supply the wrong review or session identity. This does not demonstrate an authorization bypass; server enforcement and persisted-link correction were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Interpolated repository components pass the existing argument guard, and execution does not use a shell. Before secondary linking, Watch additionally requires a github.com URL and matching URL/payload PR numbers. These controls constrain argument injection and malformed links but do not establish branch ownership for an ancestor match.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation abandons an in-flight secondary probe without posting its later result; the underlying runner remains time-bounded. A successful remote POST followed by interruption before recording the local key can be retried. The client documents server deduplication, but server atomicity and duplicate handling were not independently verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Treat an unknown default-branch exclusion as unresolved rather than authoritative history identity. Preserve history-match provenance through consumers so inferred associations can be confirmed or reconciled before becoming persistent session links or long-lived review defaults.

Explanation

Issue #1506 requires a fallback after both name lookups miss. ResolveAndDetectPrAsync calls DetectForHistoryAsync for GitHub repositories. The fallback lists open PRs for the target repository and the current user, rejects cross-repository PRs, matches the nearest commit from HEAD history, and excludes commits reachable from remote default branches. Shared nearest heads return no PR. The lookup uses up to 100 commits and runs without a miss cache. The added tests cover renamed pushes, nearest-head selection, shared heads, invalid data, cross-repository PRs, and fallback integration.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes add history-based GitHub PR detection, connect it to the existing fallback chain, and add focused automated tests. These changes directly support issue #1506. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

High-Level Assessment

The bounded history fallback is appropriate: branch-name lookup cannot identify a differently named push without an upstream, while commit matching also tolerates local commits above the pushed head. Restricting candidates to the caller’s open, same-repository PRs limits false matches without changing the existing lookup paths.

detection flow around `historyTask` and `prsTask`, so repeated detections for a

misses so a PR created later for that SHA can still be discovered.

commits already present on the repository’s default branch, preventing shared
history from linking an unrelated PR. Preserve matching for commits specific to

Remediation recommended

1. Shared PR heads can link the wrong PR ✓ Resolved
Description
DetectForHistoryAsync keys candidates only by headRefOid, and TryAdd silently retains the
first PR when two rows share that commit. When the same head has open PRs against different base
branches, the checkout can receive whichever PR appears first in the list rather than its intended
PR.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/PrDetection/PrDetector.cs[76]

+                heads.TryAdd(oid, pr);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted collision-handling precedent rejects first-writer attribution when shared identifiers can
map to different entities.

PR-#242

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The query does not select a base branch, duplicate head OIDs are discarded by TryAdd, and the
retained PR is returned and copied into repository metadata.

## Issue description
Two open PRs can share a head commit, but the history fallback chooses one based on list order.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/PrDetection/PrDetector.cs[64-83]
## Recommended Fix
Keep all PRs for each head commit and return no history match when the nearest matching commit identifies multiple PRs, unless a reliable checkout signal distinguishes them. Add a duplicate-head test.

2. A checkout can link a PR behind its HEAD ✗ Dismissed
Description
DetectForHistoryAsync matches an open PR’s headRefOid anywhere in the last 100 commits rather
than requiring it to equal the checkout’s HEAD SHA, and it does not exclude the remote’s default
branch. A local commit atop a PR head, or a default-branch checkout containing a still-open PR’s
head in its history, can therefore acquire that PR’s metadata and cause downstream review requests
to use its number.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/PrDetection/PrDetector.cs[R82-84]

+        foreach (var line in history.Split('\n')) {
+            if (heads.TryGetValue(line.Trim(), out var pr)) return pr;
+        }
Relevance

●● Moderate

The finding conflicts with the PR’s explicit nearest-history behavior, but no close rejection
precedent was found.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The fallback maps open PR head SHAs and returns a PR when any commit from git rev-list matches,
without checking the checkout’s exact HEAD SHA or branch. Repository detection calls this fallback
after name-based lookups miss, then places the returned PR number in repository metadata for use as
a review identity.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The history fallback can associate a checkout with an open PR whose head is only an ancestor of HEAD, including on the remote’s default branch, and pass that PR’s number to downstream review requests.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/PrDetection/PrDetector.cs[82-84]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/RepositoryDetection.cs[265-269]
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/PrDetection/GitHubPrDetectorTests.cs[126-163]

## Recommended Fix
Read the checkout’s exact HEAD SHA and accept a candidate only when its `headRefOid` equals that SHA. Pass the detected branch into the fallback and decline history matches on the remote’s default branch. Update the tests to verify that an ancestor head is rejected, an exact HEAD match is accepted, and an open PR head in the default branch’s history is rejected.

An open PR from the default branch into another has that branch as its head, so without the
exclusion every checkout cut from it would link that PR.
