Closes #1445 — AI-3708

What & why

WorkContextViewModel, PlanSectionViewModel, and ArtefactsTabViewModel each carried their own copy of the lease-based single-flight read loop; SingleFlightReader<TState, TResult> consolidates cancellation, queued follow-up refreshes, UI-thread settlement, and teardown in one place. Hot paths in AgentDirectory, ChatTabViewModel, ChatTabView, and per-session SourceCache pipelines now cache .git root lookups and template parts, skip no-op UI-thread work on idle transcript ticks, and filter cache changesets ahead of ObserveOn. In the test suite, AvaloniaSession initializes ReactiveUI once per assembly instead of on every dispatch, and tests of test-only fakes, one-line wrappers, and static XAML layout/names are removed and guarded in CLAUDE.md.

Where to look

SingleFlightReader marks a lease settled right before invoking apply, matching ArtefactsTabViewModel.OpenDocument's pending-path gate across session switches.

Verification

dotnet run --project test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit.csproj -- --treenode-filter "/*/*/(WorkContextViewModelTests|PlanSectionViewModelTests|ArtefactsTabViewModelTests|AgentDirectoryTests|ChatTabViewModelTests|ChatTabViewSmokeTests|WorkspaceViewModelTests|WorkspaceViewSmokeTests|LauncherPaneViewSmokeTests|AppMutationLaneWiringTests|TerminalTabViewModelTests|RemoteSessionViewModelTests)/*"

434 passed, 0 failed (28.0s).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Session-based data refreshes behave more consistently when switching sessions or requesting updates. Failed reads no longer disrupt displayed content.
    • Agent and workspace updates are more focused as changes arrive.
    • Chat composer caret positioning reuses layout information to identify the caret’s visual line.
  • Tests
    • Updated coverage for human-readable error messages and removed tests focused on implementation details, test-only behavior, or static layout checks.

Change: Refactor

Suggested reviewers: alexeyzimarev

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9f616

Repository rows may show an outdated identity after a Git-root change, and a rare error-reporting failure may leave a read loading. Address these bounded risks before merging or accept them explicitly.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9f616

The inspected changes preserve session isolation and existing access controls, with no demonstrated expansion of attacker authority. One exceptional-error recovery regression can prevent affected desktop panes from refreshing until their session reader is replaced.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The shared reader does not restore its idle invariant when execution exits before Settle. A failed UI dispatch, or an error callback that throws while logging a read failure, leaves IsReading true after the task has completed. Refresh then only records a follow-up, while StartIfIdle refuses to start it. This worsens recovery relative to the base task-derived state and can strand the affected pane’s read lifecycle until its lease is replaced. Ordinary source errors are converted successfully; exceptional runtime reachability was not exercised, and no security bypass was demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified recovery regression affects reads owned by individual desktop view-model leases. Its demonstrated outcome is unavailable or stale pane content, not access to another session or a change in backend authorization. Broader attacker reachability was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed remote-row subscription retains the local-takeover proof: a proven local twin, matching nonempty session identity, and no prior terminal verdict. Removal releases the existing lease; session changes acquire access for the new session, and release publishes Unavailable. Moving the filter does not remove these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Centralizing read ownership makes exceptional termination a shared failure-containment contract. Normal source failures are converted into results, but failures before settlement can leave completed tasks represented as active reads. The retained concern is this recovery regression, not an established security exploit.

Explanation

The PR implements several [#1445] objectives, including shared SingleFlightReader usage, cache-stream filtering, lookup caching, reduced idle work, test-session ReactiveUI reuse, and test pruning. However, RailSessionViewModel.cs still computes age once in the constructor and documents it as a point-in-time snapshot. This does not meet [#1445]'s requirement that the documented RailSessionViewModel.Age behavior advance over time. The reviewed evidence also does not establish completion of the linked issue's remaining race and performance objectives.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Reactive read pipelines
  • ➕ Could express session switching and cancellation through stream operators.
  • ➖ Queued follow-up refreshes, teardown, and the artefacts settlement gate would still need careful coordination.

Recommendation: Keep the shared reader: it removes three near-identical lease loops while retaining each view model's result handling. A reactive rewrite would be broader without clearly simplifying the required lifecycle semantics.

Remediation recommended

1. Mutation checks stay split in two tests ✓ Resolved
Description
AppMutationLaneWiringTests uses separate parameterized methods for attention/storage outcomes and
repair outcomes instead of one parameterized PresentOutcomeAsync case. The coverage remains
duplicated across two test bodies, so adding another outcome requires choosing and maintaining a
separate assertion path.

●●● Strong

The PR explicitly targets redundant tests, and accepted precedents favor consolidating equivalent
parameterized coverage.

PR-#1214

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires replacing the equivalent PresentOutcomeAsync cases with a single
parameterized test. The changed test file adds one parameterized method for attention/storage
outcomes and a second parameterized method for repair outcomes, leaving the coverage split across
two methods.

Parameterize duplicated mutation outcome assertions

## Issue description
The mutation outcome assertions remain split across two parameterized test methods, while the compliance requirement calls for one parameterized test covering the relevant tokens and human-readable attention copy.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/AppMutationLaneWiringTests.cs[148-170]

## Recommended Fix
Consolidate the attention, storage, and repair token cases into a single parameterized test. Parameterize the outcome construction data needed for each case, then keep the shared `PresentOutcomeAsync` and human-copy assertions in one test body.

2. A moved comment now labels the composer hook ✓ Resolved
Description
The new ComposerInput.TemplateApplied handler was placed directly under the comment explaining
that the ScrollViewer belongs to the chat list's template. That comment now sits above a statement
about the composer's TextPresenter, so a reader reads the wrong rationale for both lines.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[R59-60]

Agent prompt

## Issue description
The new composer `TemplateApplied` handler splits the ChatItems ScrollViewer comment from the code it describes.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml.cs[55-63]

## Recommended Fix
Move the `ComposerInput.TemplateApplied` registration above the `// The ScrollViewer is the list template's…` comment. Optionally resolve the presenter via `e.NameScope.Find<TextPresenter>("PART_TextPresenter")` or drop the hook, since the lazy `??=` in `ComposerCaretLine` already caches it.

3. Repo grouping can freeze on a stale lookup ✗ Dismissed
Description
AgentDirectory.RepoFor retains _resolveLocalRepoRoot results by input path without revalidating
whether the path still resolves to the same Git root. If a checkout is initially absent or
unreadable, or a removed path is later recreated as another repository’s worktree, subsequent agents
and placeholders can retain a stale repository group key and label until the app restarts.
Code

PR-#1316
PR-#1363

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
ResolveMainRepoRoot follows a linked worktree’s .git pointer when it exists but falls back to a
path-based result when the checkout is absent, so its answer can change with filesystem state.
AgentDirectory recomputes rows as agents change, but a _repoByPath cache hit bypasses that
resolution and supplies the rail’s repository group key and label; the existing
RepoIdentityResolver.ForLocalRoot cache does not address changes in the path-to-root mapping.

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
`AgentDirectory.RepoFor` caches a filesystem-dependent path-to-Git-root resolution indefinitely. An absent checkout or a path later reused for a different worktree can therefore leave agents and placeholders with a stale repository identity.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/AgentDirectory.cs[162-171]

## Recommended Fix
Do not permanently cache path-based fallback results from absent or unreadable checkouts. Bound the path cache’s lifetime by pruning entries for paths no longer present in `_localAgents`, `_pendingLaunches`, or `_placeholders` during `Recompute`, and revalidate retained entries when their checkout or `.git` mapping may have changed. Ensure a later agent using the path receives the identity of its currently resolved repository.

22-22: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the busy state in Settle. Do not wait for Pending to complete.

IsReading stays true until the RunReadAsync task completes. That task completes after the continuation of InvokeAsync, so Settle has already run by then. In that gap, onReadingChanged(false) has already fired. A Refresh() call in the gap sets RefreshPending, and no code reads that flag again, so the follow-up read is lost. StartIfIdle() also does nothing in the gap. Track the busy state explicitly: set it in StartRead and clear it at the start of Settle.

🐛 Proposed fix
-        public bool IsReading => Pending is { IsCompleted: false };
+        public bool IsReading;

In StartRead, add lease.IsReading = true; before RunReadAsync. In Settle, add lease.IsReading = false; as the first statement.

Replace the derived IsReading state in the lease with an explicitly tracked
value; set it to true in StartRead before launching RunReadAsync, and clear it
as the first statement in Settle so Refresh and StartIfIdle observe the idle
state as soon as settling begins.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the on-demand visual-tree lookup.

When _composerPresenter remains null, ComposerCaretLine can walk GetVisualDescendants() on every Up/Down key. The mandatory UI-thread guidance requires template parts to be cached during TemplateApplied. Use the existing newline fallback when no cached presenter exists.

Suggested fix
-        var presenter = _composerPresenter ??= ComposerInput.GetVisualDescendants().OfType<TextPresenter>().FirstOrDefault();
-        var layout = presenter?.TextLayout;
+        var layout = _composerPresenter?.TextLayout;

Update ComposerCaretLine to use the cached _composerPresenter directly instead
of looking up TextPresenter through GetVisualDescendants on demand. Keep the
existing newline fallback when no presenter is cached.

disposing the Cts prematurely or more than once.

bypass Settle: catch failures from the callback and use a null result, then
preserve the existing dispatch and lease-settlement flow.
