Closes #1431 — AI-3654

What & why

Grok Build becomes an unattended review-flow reviewer, owned worktree only. Like Claude it declares no containment, so borrowed review stays unsupported. It is gated like the other reviewers, by KCAP_GROK_UNATTENDED_REVIEWER (opt-out) and a version floor recorded at startup. It uses the allowlisted auto-approve policy.

Where to look

  • Ask mode plus admission is a guard, not a boundary. session/new keeps yoloMode: false. Measured on grok 1.0.52: a shell write raises session/request_permission (kind: execute) and does not run when refused; read-only commands and file reads raise nothing. The policy approves only a frame Grok names structurally as a call on an injected server: _meta.x.ai/tool.name == "use_tool", rawInput.variant == "UseTool", rawInput.tool_name == "<injected server>__<tool>", and the title equal to that name. Any other frame reaps the round.
  • Admission is now per vendor. UnattendedToolAdmitter on the descriptor carries the admitted-set builder and the matcher. Kiro's title match moved behind it unchanged, and AllowlistedAutoApprove now requires one.
  • Tool clamp and isolation. _meta.agentProfile (measured to take effect as a JSON object) removes search_replace, write, subagents and web search. The review environment turns off Grok's Claude/Cursor compat sources and subagents. The user's own Grok configuration still applies: their permission rules approve matching calls without a frame, and their hooks and MCP servers run, the same as the Claude and Codex reviewers running under the user's own config. No per-process switch reaches them short of moving GROK_HOME, which would mean handling the user's credential.

Verification

  • GrokToolAdmissionTests: probe-shaped frames. The result call on an injected server is admitted. Edits, commands, other servers, prefix and embedded names, and mismatched fields are not. Through the bridge, the result call is approved and a command reaped.
  • GrokReviewerLaunchTests: the review session/new carries the clamp, an interactive one does not. The review environment is set and the interactive one inherited. Refused when disabled or below the floor.
  • GrokReviewerCapabilityTests, plus the gated-reviewer registry and preference pins.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Grok Build as an unattended review-flow reviewer, enabled by default. Disable it with KCAP_GROK_UNATTENDED_REVIEWER=0.
    • Grok reviews run in dedicated worktrees and can read, search, and use the terminal, but cannot edit files. Tool calls are limited to servers provided for the review.
    • Grok reviewer launches use the daemon’s Grok configuration and require a supported version. Interactive Grok launches retain their existing behavior.

Ask mode is the boundary: Grok asks before every edit and non-read-only command,
and only a use_tool call on a server the review injected is approved.

📝 Walkthrough

The daemon now supports Grok Build as an unattended review-flow reviewer. It applies an opt-out setting and version checks, configures restricted review launches, and admits tool calls only when they match injected MCP servers.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 28da0

The reviewed changes preserve the version-gated launch flow; no actionable merge-blocking risk is established.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 28da0

Unattended reviews inherit the operator’s permissions and external integrations, so approval restrictions do not bound every execution path. Owned-checkout checks and rejection of unexpected requests reduce risk, but configuration-dependent authority and version-dependent behavior remain only partially verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new unattended path retains user permission rules, hooks and MCP servers that can act without a daemon permission request. Repository-controlled review content could therefore influence capabilities outside the injected-server admission check, depending on the operator’s configuration. Owned-worktree enforcement protects work-location ownership, not host filesystem or external-service authority. This is an inferred exposure expansion relative to Grok’s previous interactive-only support, not a verified exploit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The enforced launch location is one owned worktree, but the independently reachable security scope can extend to host-accessible data and services available through inherited user integrations. No additional privilege acquisition is established; exposure depends on the process’s existing permissions and configured integrations. No tenant or service inventory was supplied to quantify that scope.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional attack path is repository-controlled review content influencing a call covered by a user permission rule or available through a user MCP server. Such execution may omit the permission frame that the daemon validates. The PR newly permits unattended Grok reviews, but the end-to-end path and any resulting unauthorized action were not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The controls operate at distinct seams: capability and work-location checks run before spawn; session metadata clamps vendor tools; structural matching controls permission frames. Missing or malformed permission frames also cancel and reap. None of these establishes a boundary around vendor-side configuration that executes without a frame.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Request routing admits only the installed running incarnation and declines requests after intentional stop. Pending-interaction cancellation is checked before bridge invocation and before accepting its result, with registry cleanup in a finally block. This supports interruption containment without claiming that external tool side effects can be rolled back.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider a review-specific configuration boundary that excludes inherited permission rules and integrations while preserving credential ownership. Independently validate the supported configuration-discovery scope and launch guards for intended version ranges; the recorded downgrade floor should not be treated as behavioral certification.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Sandbox Grok at the operating-system boundary
  • ➕ Could contain filesystem reads and support a future borrowed-checkout reviewer.
  • ➖ Adds platform-specific isolation and lifecycle complexity beyond this owned-worktree feature.

Recommendation: Keep the owned-worktree restriction and ask-mode, fail-closed admission boundary for this feature; the agent-profile clamp alone cannot enforce permissions. Consider OS-level sandboxing separately if borrowed checkouts become a requirement.

Remediation recommended

1. Capability file contains two top-level types ✗ Dismissed
Description
GrokReviewerCapability.cs adds both the top-level GrokReviewerDecision enum and the top-level
GrokReviewerCapability static class. Because the enum is not an extension-method companion or
another allowed narrow exception, the file no longer has one primary type whose name matches the
file, making type discovery and ownership less clear for maintainers.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Grok/GrokReviewerCapability.cs[R5-12]

+internal enum GrokReviewerDecision {
+ Allowed,
+ Disabled,
+ VersionUnresolved,
+ VersionNoMinimum,
+ VersionBelowMinimum,
+ VersionIncomparable
+}
Relevance

●●● Strong

The rule explicitly requires one primary type; moving the enum is a straightforward maintainability
fix.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed file introduces a top-level enum and a separate top-level static class. Neither is a
permitted enum-extension or closely related implementation exception under the one-primary-type
rule.

## Issue description
`GrokReviewerCapability.cs` defines two top-level internal types, `GrokReviewerDecision` and `GrokReviewerCapability`, without an allowed one-file exception.

- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Grok/GrokReviewerCapability.cs[23-23]

## Recommended Fix
Move `GrokReviewerDecision` to `GrokReviewerDecision.cs` and leave `GrokReviewerCapability` as the sole primary type in `GrokReviewerCapability.cs`, updating namespace imports or references if needed.

2. Probe comments become stale over time ✗ Dismissed
Description
GrokToolAdmissionTests embeds the dated probe path docs/probes/2026-10-13-grok-acp/ in a test
comment. The date and external probe artifact can become inaccurate as the implementation or
verification evidence changes, misleading later maintainers about the current source of the expected
frame shape.
Code

test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Harness/Grok/GrokToolAdmissionTests.cs[R9-12]

+/// <summary>
+/// Which permission frames a Grok reviewer approves unattended, against <c>toolCall</c> objects shaped as

Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent precedent accepts removing dated probe references from test comments to keep documentation
durable.

PR-#1102
PR-#1031

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The added test comment contains an explicit calendar date and an external probe artifact path, which
the checklist prohibits in code comments.

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The test comment includes the time-sensitive probe path `docs/probes/2026-10-13-grok-acp/`, which can become stale and encodes external verification history rather than current behavior.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Harness/Grok/GrokToolAdmissionTests.cs[9-12]

## Recommended Fix
Rewrite the comment to describe the current Grok permission-frame shape and admission behavior without the dated probe directory or other external process metadata.

3. Grok reviewer may launch without its shell ✗ Dismissed
Description
GrokReviewerLaunch.AgentProfile() allowlists run_terminal_cmd, but Grok's terminal tool is named
run_terminal_command in the probe fixture and existing hook test. If profile tools are matched by
exact name, review launches lack shell access and cannot perform read-only inspection with commands
such as git diff and git log.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Grok/GrokReviewerLaunch.cs[15]

+ ["tools"] = new JsonArray("read_file", "grep", "list_dir", "run_terminal_cmd"),
Relevance

●●● Strong

Exact tool-name mismatches threaten reviewer shell access; repository precedents accept fail-closed,
vendor-specific admission fixes.

PR-#615

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The profile lists run_terminal_cmd, while both the Grok 1.0.52 probe-derived permission-frame
fixture and an existing Grok hook test identify the terminal tool as run_terminal_command; no
repository code identifies Grok's terminal tool as run_terminal_cmd.

The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The Grok review profile allowlists `run_terminal_cmd`, but the observed Grok terminal tool is `run_terminal_command`, so review launches may lack the shell needed for read-only inspection.

- test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Harness/Grok/GrokReviewerLaunchTests.cs[1-90]

## Recommended Fix
Replace `run_terminal_cmd` with `run_terminal_command` in the profile. Check the other allowlisted names (`read_file`, `grep`, `list_dir`) against the Grok 1.0.52 probe output, and add a review-launch test that asserts the exact profile tool names recorded in the probe.
