Building and Evaluation of Radar Terrain Analysis
BERTA is an open-source tool for analysing and combining surveillance coverage maps generated by PREDICT (EUROCONTROL).
It provides an efficient way to process multiple coverage results, identify the limiting surveillance source, classify coverage by levels, and export the results to standard GIS formats for visualization and further analysis.
- Import coverage data generated by PREDICT.
- Combine multiple surveillance coverages into a single consolidated map.
- Determine the critical (worst-case) coverage at every point.
- Organize coverage according to configurable coverage levels.
- Compare different surveillance configurations.
- Export results to KML for visualization in Google Earth.
- Export GIS-compatible data for use in geographic information systems.
- Fast processing of large surveillance coverage datasets.

BERTA is intended for engineers involved in the design and assessment of Air Traffic Management (ATM) surveillance systems, including:
- Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR)
- Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR)
- Mode S
- Multilateration (MLAT)
- ADS-B
- Mixed surveillance environments
Typical applications include:
- Surveillance coverage studies.
- Gap analysis.
- System upgrade evaluation.
- Operational scenario comparison.
- Safety assessments.
- Coverage visualization and reporting.
PREDICT provides detailed surveillance coverage calculations, but analysing multiple outputs can be time-consuming.
BERTA simplifies this process by allowing engineers to:
- Combine several surveillance systems.
- Instantly identify the limiting coverage.
- Produce consistent coverage maps.
- Generate GIS-ready outputs.
- Share results through KML files.
BERTA stands for:
Building and Evaluation of Radar Terrain Analysis
The name reflects the tool's primary purpose: evaluating and blending multiple radar surveillance coverage datasets into a unified analysis.
This project is released as Open Source. See the LICENSE file for details.
