Suspending an agent with ctrl-z, or running a quick command in front of it, no longer makes Herdr forget it. After fg, the agent keeps its session id, its name and its hook status reporting, so it still resumes after a restart. On Windows, the same applies when the pane briefly stops seeing the agent while it keeps running.

  • While the shell or another non-agent job is in front, Herdr checks that the exact agent process is still alive in the pane. It matches the pid detection identified plus its start time, and requires the same session/tty. It holds the agent only while that check passes. A real exit is still reported and clears the session as before. That includes killing the suspended job, the agent dying while a wrapper lives on, and its pid being reused.
  • A suspended agent is still rechecked every 5 seconds while its hooks are in charge, so a background kill is noticed.
  • On Windows, the check also accepts agents that Git Bash started outside the shell's process tree, using the same runtime-marker match foreground selection uses. It validates them by pid and creation time.
  • Hook replay suppression is unchanged from master.

Follow-up, not in this PR: when another agent briefly takes the foreground, the original agent's session isn't restored yet.

Validation

  • just check is green, including Windows clippy. Windows test code also passes cargo clippy --tests --target x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.

  • New tests drive the detection step both loops use. Each fails when the relevant part of the fix is reverted:

    • suspend, command, fg;
    • killed while suspended;
    • wrapper survives;
    • reused pid (same pid, different start token);
    • the 5 s recheck under hook authority.

    There are also real-process platform tests for start token, stopped, zombie and session mismatch. The Claude pane keeps a dead session id when a new Claude starts without the pane shell regaining the foreground #4785 real-exit characterization tests stay green.

  • Linux live, Claude 2.1.285 and Pi 1.0.3:

    • ctrl-z, a command, then fg keeps the session and name;
    • Pi's hook reports after fg are accepted;
    • kill -9 %1 while suspended clears in about 3.4 s;
    • /exit and /quit clear in under 1 s.
  • Windows VM live, Claude 2.1.172 in PowerShell. I forced the flap by starting an agent-named sibling process for 20 s:

    • on master, the pane drops to no agent and loses the session id, and Claude comes back without one;
    • on this branch, the session is kept through the flap, and killing Claude clears it 3 s later.
  • The Windows unit tests, including the new pane-association test, pass on the VM.

  • macOS compiles for the first time in CI. It isn't installed locally.

Review in Change Stack →

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds process identity and liveness checks for detected agents across supported platforms. Pane detection uses the identified PID and process start token to track agents across foreground changes and detect exits or replacements. Both detection loops use shared tracking and probe logic. Tests cover process tracking and agent session, name, and hook-authority behavior across exits, relaunches, late reports, same-kind replacement, and suspension.

Suggested reviewers: jjliebig

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ad285

A transient process lookup failure can clear a still-running agent’s session and hook status. The risk is narrow, but the exit decision should distinguish an unavailable lookup from a confirmed exit.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ad285

The change preserves sessions using process identity and pane membership checks, without introducing a new external access boundary. Process-inspection failures can still cause premature session retirement, and failure-recovery coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed decision operates on a pane's previously identified process and its retained session, name, and hook status authority. It extends identity retention in time; the inspected path does not introduce an external service entrypoint or grant operating-system privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Retention validates PID plus process start time rather than PID alone. Linux additionally requires the pane shell's session and excludes dead process states; macOS requires the same terminal and excludes zombies. Windows requires a running process with matching creation time and either shell ancestry or, for an escaped Git Bash agent, a matching nonempty pane runtime marker.
  • inferred — Process names and inherited runtime markers remain association evidence, not authentication of an independently trusted principal. The Windows marker-based foreground association predates this PR; the added background path also requires the already-recorded PID and creation time. No newly reachable impersonation path was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Background retention preserves existing presence rather than directly assigning hook authority. Application state supplies the runtime authority flag, and held processes bypass the ordinary authority-based probe suppression so background termination can be detected.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider distinguishing confirmed exit or identity mismatch from indeterminate inspection, with bounded retry and explicit recovery tests. An unverifiable process should not be treated as newly validated, while confirmed death or replacement should retain prompt authority cleanup.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium risk] Keeps agent sessions alive when backgrounded or suspended.

The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable defect was established.

Summary

The PR tracks an identified agent process across foreground changes so a suspended or temporarily backgrounded agent can retain its session, name, and hook authority. It also checks the held process for exit or PID reuse and adds coverage for those transitions.

  • Foreground probes now retain the matched agent PID and start token.
  • Linux, macOS, and Windows provide process-liveness checks for held agents.
  • Detection tests cover suspension, return, replacement, and background exit.

Distinguish lookup failure from exit at src/pane/background_agent.rs:70.

When a held agent is missing from the foreground, a transient Linux /proc read or parse failure can make live_pane_process_group return None. This branch treats None as ExitedInBackground. The pane then reports an exit and clears current_agent, even if the agent is still running. Keep the held identity when liveness is indeterminate; reserve this status for a confirmed exit.

@coderabbitai re the outside-diff note on background_agent.rs status: keeping this fail-closed on purpose. /proc//stat doesn't fail transiently for a live process (ENOENT means it's gone), and treating an unreadable process as exited only falls back to master's behavior, while holding on an indeterminate read could keep a dead agent's session forever. the fail-closed cases are pinned by live_pane_process_group_rejects_processes_outside_the_pane_session and the held_agent_* tests.

@ogulcancelik Thanks for the clarification. I checked AgentJobTracker::status and the cited test coverage.

Requiring positive liveness and pane-membership evidence before retaining the session is consistent with the intended fail-closed policy. Keeping the session on an indeterminate lookup would weaken that policy and could retain a stale session.

I withdraw the outside-diff note. No change is needed.

Learning: In the Rust agent job tracker in src/pane/background_agent.rs, AgentJobTracker::status intentionally fails closed. If live_pane_process_group cannot confirm the tracked agent's liveness, process start token, and pane membership, a previously held agent is treated as ExitedInBackground. Do not recommend retaining its session indefinitely on an indeterminate lookup. This policy prevents stale sessions and falls back to the pre-existing exit behavior. Related coverage includes live_pane_process_group_rejects_processes_outside_the_pane_session in src/platform/mod.rs and the held_agent_* tests in src/pane.rs.
