Clicking a targeted notification sends an activation event to the client, which validates the target and requests focus for the pane. Windows notification delivery uses a registered protocol and a COM-backed toast service. The change also adds activation and stale-target tests, and documents notification click behavior and its limits. Suggested reviewers: Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to Windows notification clicks now select the originating pane. Delivery no longer blocks the client loop, and stale targets are rejected. The manual Windows checks for elevated launch and moving a tab between windows are still pending, but they are normal pre-merge validation and not an identified defect. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to Pane selection is guarded against stale targets, and no privilege escalation was established. Elevated Windows launches and cleanup after moving or removing the application remain unverified. Retained concerns Security review detailsSecurity Blast Radius

releases the SERVICE lock before waiting for worker startup or per-request
responses, and avoid blocking the Tokio client loop by moving that work off-loop
or using fire-and-forget delivery. Ensure startup timeouts stop or clean up the
worker, and cache permanent initialization failures so later notifications do
not repeat initialization or spawn workers.

@coderabbitai full review Please review current head 2e83934. Addressed inline findings: native delivery runs off the client loop in submission order, unrelated custom messages retain separate history entries, and stale targets cannot foreground the terminal. The bundled headless activation host requirement is explained inline. Full local checks passed after rebase. |

Merges 4 upstream commits: native actionable Windows notifications (herdrdev#4803), restored codex idle detection with updated codex/pi manifests, and docs corrections (codex idle state, agent support guide example link). refs upstream herdrdev/herdr@d6b40d4e
Upstream herdrdev#4803 added a Windows-only activation test that calls dispatch_client_shell_actions, which has taken the fork's clipboard writer since fork.10. Unix builds never compile that test, so only the Windows CI job caught the missing argument.
Windows system delivery currently uses temporary notification-area balloons without click handling. Use native Windows notifications that remain in Notification Center; a click selects the originating pane in its running client and foregrounds its visible terminal window. Repeated notifications for a target replace each other, and old clicks cannot select a pane from a restarted server.
This implements the behavior requested in discussion #4774. The original registration failure in #4773 stopped reproducing after the reporter restarted both processes; this change does not claim to explain that failure.
Validation: user confirmed actual notification clicks foreground the Windows Terminal test window and select the originating workspace, plus Notification Center retention. Native probes cover persistent and distinct custom notifications, replacement, removed-history protocol activation, Unicode/XML text, and unknown tokens. Tests cover local/SSH target identity, boot changes, same-boot reconnection, removed panes/profiles, remote handoff selection, and client responsiveness with ordered native delivery.
just checkpassed (3,335 Rust tests plus required maintenance, integration and documentation checks). Ponytail review ran once; Review Suite fast signoff is clean.User confirmed both normal and administrator clicks foreground the correct test window and select the originating workspace. The administrator test used a retained Notification Center entry; its banner was not observed. Moving a Windows Terminal tab between windows remains untested. Programmatic activation verified minimized/maximized foreground behavior and no additional visible console. Windows Terminal cannot reliably select another outer terminal tab; nested ConPTY without a visible root owner can select the Herdr pane but cannot foreground a guessed window. Source builds need the app-local ConPTY runtime included in the supported Windows package.
