feat(domains): switch certificate validation and configure renewal alerts - #1664
Switch an existing domain between DNS-01 and HTTP-01 from Domains → domain → Certificate settings, without deleting the domain or replacing its serving certificate prematurely. Changes apply to new orders; pending orders retain their original challenge type. Wildcards remain DNS-01 only.
The header’s Certificate settings button opens an on-demand dialog; the detail page keeps the certificate status, key facts, and renewal history visible. The dialog configures renewal (1–90 days) and independent expiry alerts. Domains inherit Monitoring → Alerts SSL preferences unless overridden. For example, renew at 30 days and alert at 7 days. Renewal failures still raise failure alerts.
Policies are stored separately from certificate state so issuance cannot overwrite them. Saving renewal or alert settings for an uploaded, manually managed certificate preserves manual renewal. Reads/writes enforce domain permissions; updates are audited. The daily control-plane job reads preferences once and fetches certificates/policies in batches of 100. No new per-request database work is added. The web and CLI clients and CLI references are regenerated; the shared SDK’s OIDC operation is also refreshed from the server schema.
Type of change
New feature
Bug fix
Validation
Local Pebble ACME round-trip: HTTP-01 → DNS-01 → HTTP-01 on the same domain row. Real HTTP/TXT validation enabled (PEBBLE_VA_ALWAYS_VALID=0), authorization reuse disabled. Each renewal issues a new certificate; the previous certificate/key and active status stay intact while pending.
Regression test: test_provision_on_demand_real_pebble_http01_and_method_switches. Run with Docker available and its socket configured.
118 domain library tests passed after merging main; 5 API integration tests passed in the earlier feature validation; 3 existing Pebble trust-dependent tests remain ignored. The separate real-validation round-trip above ran successfully.
53 targeted frontend/shared-template tests passed across the merge and review checks, including certificate settings, domain states, query fallback, and main’s Dockerfile runtime controls. 35 CLI tests passed.
Full web lint/typecheck, CLI typecheck/spec format, domain Clippy, server/frontend builds, source attribution, and diff checks passed.
Production ACME issuance was not exercised.

New Features
Configure certificate validation methods, renewal windows, and expiry-alert preferences for each domain.
View and edit certificate settings from the domain detail page. Wildcard domains require DNS validation.
Certificate renewals and expiry alerts follow each domain’s configured policies, with alert timing configurable separately from renewal timing.
Use embedded settings forms with clearer section headings.
Bug Fixes
Pending certificate orders now display their own validation instructions, and active certificates remain available while renewals are in progress.
Certificate settings edits remain available after failed saves.
Documentation
CLI reference documentation now shows command arguments and covers additional environment and user commands, including MFA resets. It no longer lists ai-access.
Console layout verification
Before
After
Why
Settings form dominated the domain detail page
Visible header button opens a shared dialog only on demand
Preserve the certificate/status/history layout
Full-page Settings nested inside detail
Embedded Settings template inside the dialog
Contained spacing and heading hierarchy
Wide controls and detached labels
Bounded fields, stacked groups on mobile
Consistent alignment
Regression coverage verifies that the form is absent initially, opens from the header, and disappears on close while renewal history remains. Inspected the authenticated local demo at desktop (1440, dark), tablet (768, light), and mobile (390, dark) sizes. The mobile dialog fits within the viewport without horizontal overflow. Web TypeScript, targeted ESLint, production build, and source attribution checks passed. Earlier shared-template checks and gallery build also passed.
Review coverage
On-demand issuance explicitly uses HTTP-01 while retaining the saved policy for future explicit orders and scheduled renewal. Renewal-window comparisons use durations so extreme instance alert thresholds cannot overflow dates and stop the scheduler. Failed domains with open orders show only the failure/retry controls; active certificates still show pending renewal challenges. Regression tests reproduce all three old behaviors and pass with these fixes.
Review fixes preserve manual renewal after settings saves, normalize legacy challenge defaults, retain pending-order methods, continue renewal when alert preferences cannot be read, and validate the method consistently for UI instructions and dependent queries. The OIDC schema and generated types agree across all three clients. CLI reference corrections cover required arguments/flags, project slugs, ingress enforcement, and MFA reset prerequisites.
The domain header contains Certificate settings and the overflow menu; refresh lives in the menu, and create/verify/renew actions stay in the certificate card. The settings label becomes screen-reader-only on mobile, and the dialog’s Save bar stays sticky. Verified desktop and 390 px mobile layouts, accessible button naming, dialog opening, and absence of horizontal overflow.
The new manual-renewal and frontend regression tests fail against the old behavior and pass with the fixes. Domain Clippy (including tests), all three SDK typechecks, canonical spec format, source attribution, and formatting checks passed. Generated merge conflicts were resolved by rebuilding the merged backend and regenerating clients, preserving both certificate policy and container runtime override APIs.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add per-domain certificate settings for challenge selection, renewal timing, and expiry alerts. Authenticated APIs and a domain detail panel expose those settings. Certificate provisioning and renewal use saved policies and pending-order challenge metadata. The CLI reference, embedded settings support, and OIDC callback API contract are also updated.
A new settings model and migration define challenge type, renewal days, and optional alert overrides. Authenticated GET and PUT endpoints expose the settings with validation and permission checks.
Select and display each order challenge crates/temps-domains/src/domain_service.rs, crates/temps-domains/src/handlers/domain_handler.rs, web/src/pages/DomainDetail.tsx, web/src/pages/DomainDetail.states.test.tsx
Challenge requests use the saved preference unless an explicit override is supplied. Provisioning and renewal use order challenge metadata, and the domain detail view displays pending-order instructions. Tests exercise DNS-01 and HTTP-01 renewals.
Apply renewal and alert policies crates/temps-domains/src/tls/repository.rs, crates/temps-domains/src/tls/service.rs, crates/temps-domains/src/plugin.rs, crates/temps-domains/Cargo.toml
Certificate checks process bounded pages and apply per-domain renewal and alert settings. Notifications are evaluated against alert eligibility.
Edit certificate settings in the domain view web/src/components/domains/DomainCertificateSettingsPanel.tsx, web/src/components/domains/certificate-settings.ts, web/src/components/domains/DomainCertificateSettingsPanel*.test.tsx, web/src/pages/DomainDetail.tsx
The domain detail view adds a certificate settings dialog and panel. The panel validates settings and retains edits across refetches and failed saves.
The generator includes required, optional, and variadic positional arguments in command headings. Environment workload options and the MFA reset description are updated.
The references add environment placement, isolation, volume, ingress, and MFA reset entries. They document positional arguments across commands and remove data ai-access.
The Settings template supports embedded section rendering, and SettingsGroup supports h2 or h3 headings. The example, tests, and documentation cover the layout.
Resolve the on-demand issuance failure before merging: affected domains may be unable to obtain a certificate. The domain page also needs its duplicate verification and cancellation controls corrected.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 67be9
Certificate settings remain permission-controlled, and scheduled DNS changes retain their authorization checks. However, a saved DNS validation preference can enter an HTTP-only automatic issuance flow and prevent certificate provisioning for an uncovered domain. Existing serving certificates are excluded from that failure path.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: An uncovered existing domain with a saved dns-01 policy can enter the HTTP-only on-demand pipeline. begin_on_demand_issuing resets the legacy verification_method to http-01, but request_challenge now reads the separate saved policy and can create a DNS challenge. The caller then waits and finalizes without publishing TXT records, so a fresh DNS authorization can fail and enter the persisted failure/backoff path. At the PR base, challenge selection used the legacy method that this pipeline resets. This introduced producer-consumer mismatch can prevent automatic TLS provisioning. Already-covered domains are skipped, and cached valid authorizations can complete immediately, limiting the affected cases.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Policy is attached to individual domain IDs, while the instance renewal service consumes policies across its certificate collection. DNS effects remain bounded by the resolved provider, authoritative zone, and ACME TXT-name checks. The inspected policy contract introduces no credential field or arbitrary DNS mutation input.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The identified failure path connects an authorized policy update to incompatible unattended issuance. It requires an uncovered domain with saved DNS-01 settings and a fresh authorization needing TXT publication. The supported outcome is failed TLS provisioning and backoff, not disclosure of keys, unauthorized certificate issuance, or demonstrated cross-tenant access.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Settings reads require authenticated DomainsRead permission; updates require DomainsWrite and server-side validation. Updates attempt an audit record after persistence, but audit failure is logged rather than rolling back the saved policy.
observed — Policy-selected scheduled DNS renewal still validates provider identity, zone coverage, ACME purpose, TXT type, and exact challenge name, then requires the automation gate to allow the request. Provider construction and credential decryption occur only afterward; missing, denied, or failed authorization returns before DNS mutation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The scheduled DNS path uses a setup helper that discards cleanup receipts and leaves completion failures pending for manual recovery. The same scheduler behavior exists at the PR base. Policy redirection makes that path usable for previously HTTP-configured certificates, but the comparison does not establish broader provider authority or a newly introduced cleanup mechanism.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Reuse durable, order-owned DNS cleanup receipts in scheduled renewal so partial publication, interruption, and later cleanup retain exact record ownership. This would address pre-existing recovery debt rather than an established new authorization vulnerability.

Use the validated method for the dependent query gates.
pendingMethod is read through a type assertion and is used directly by all three query gates. The later effectiveMethod flow validates the challenge type and falls back to domain.verification_method. If the order payload contains an unsupported non-null value, the queries remain disabled while the UI uses the fallback method. Compute the validated method before these queries and reuse it in every gate.

If a cert-eligible hostname has a saved dns-01 policy but no certificate, provision_on_demand reaches request_challenge without an override. This branch selects DNS-01 even though run_on_demand_acme only waits for an HTTP-01 responder. The order cannot validate because that flow does not publish a DNS TXT record. Pass an explicit ChallengeType::Http01 from the on-demand flow, and add a regression test for this state.
