Can you please advise how I can test this on my domain managed by deSEC & my VPS? I have an Arch development machine and a Debian 13 VPS, which leads to GLIBC version incompatibilities if I copy the release binary from Arch to my server. Also, how do I use your curl | bash setup script to set up a deployment with my changes?

I've also tried to use your GitHub actions workflow to compile a release binary, but get exit code 143 in the middle of compilation - probably an OOM kill?

If necessary, I am willing to wipe my VPS and install another distro on it, but was hoping for a less extreme testing setup.

Hey @sseemayer, thanks a lot for the PR! deSEC support is a great addition, and thanks for covering the CLI, web UI and docs too. 🙌

On testing: the GLIBC issue is because the binary is dynamically linked against the glibc of the machine it was built on, so a binary from Arch (newer glibc) won't run on Debian 13. You have two options:

1. Compile on the server itself

Build directly on your Debian 13 VPS (or any machine with the same distro/arch). The binary will link against the right glibc:

git clone -b feat/desec https://github.com/sseemayer/temps.git
cd temps
cargo build --release

2. Build with Docker for the target platform (no need to touch the VPS)

From your Arch machine, build inside a Debian 13 container with --platform linux/amd64, so the binary gets the same glibc version as your server. Then copy it out of the image:

# Dockerfile.build
FROM --platform=linux/amd64 rust:1-trixie AS builder
WORKDIR /src
COPY . .
RUN cargo build --release
docker build --platform linux/amd64 -f Dockerfile.build -t temps-build .
id=$(docker create --platform linux/amd64 temps-build)
docker cp "$id":/src/target/release/temps ./temps
docker rm "$id"
scp ./temps your-vps:/usr/local/bin/temps

The key point is that the base image's glibc must match (or be older than) the one on the server. rust:1-trixie matches Debian 13, and rust:1-bookworm would also work, since an older glibc is forward-compatible.

Once the binary is on the VPS, swap it in place of the installed one and restart the service, and you should be able to test the deSEC provider against your domain.

Let me know if you run into anything!

Thanks for the quick response! I had to make some small changes to get it to build and am sharing here for posteriority:

FROM --platform=linux/amd64 oven/bun:1.3.14 AS bun
FROM --platform=linux/amd64 rust:1-trixie AS builder

COPY --from=bun /usr/local/bin/bun /usr/local/bin/bun

RUN apt-get update \
    && apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends cmake protobuf-compiler \
    && rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

RUN bun --version

ENV PROTOC=/usr/bin/protoc
RUN "$PROTOC" --version

WORKDIR /src
COPY . .
RUN cargo build --release

I will try to deploy later today, and let you know how it goes.

Edit: Looks like I am getting a flu, so disregard my previous estimate of "I will try this today" :)

@sseemayer thanks for sharing the working Dockerfile, that'll help the next person too! Before you deploy, here's a review of the branch. A few of these will show up in your live test, so you'll know they're expected and not something wrong with your setup.

The deSEC client itself is careful (bounded reads, an origin-checked cursor, value-exact RRset edits). The blocking issues are mostly about how the provider fits Temps' existing callers.

What you'll likely see on your VPS as-is

  • A certificate for the apex domain is issued, but finalizing it returns 409 "Certificate Issued; Manual DNS Cleanup Required" and leaves the _acme-challenge TXT values in deSEC (#2)
  • A certificate for a subdomain (e.g. app.yourdomain) fails while creating the TXT record, with "not within deSEC zone" (#1)
  • Publishing a managed record (app → your VPS IP) fails before any write, for the same reason (#1)
  • Sometimes HTTP 429 errors when several operations run back to back (#3)

Blocking

1. Dotted relative record names are rejected (crates/temps-dns/src/providers/desec.rs:438-441)
Callers pass names relative to the zone, often with more than one label: _acme-challenge.api for a subdomain certificate, and _temps-owned-a.app for the ownership marker on every managed record. to_subname rejects any dotted name that doesn't end in the zone, so DNS-01 for any non-apex domain fails, and so does publishing even a single-label managed record. Cloudflare treats a name that isn't fully qualified as relative and appends the zone. Suggested fix: if the name doesn't end in .{zone}, build {name}.{domain} from the domain argument, then strip the resolved zone. Add tests for _acme-challenge.api and _temps-owned-a.app.

2. ACME cleanup never runs for deSEC (crates/temps-domains/src/handlers/domain_handler.rs:2831-2841)
cleanup_dns_txt_records only allows Cloudflare, DigitalOcean and Pebble. For deSEC it returns SharedRecordSet, so every finalize returns that 409 and leaves the TXT values and cleanup receipts behind. deSEC's record IDs are per value and delete_record only removes that value, so it can join the allowlist. Please add it, with a test of the full setup → cleanup path. Until then, the token help text in web/src/pages/AddDnsProvider.tsx:1423 that promises automated DNS-01 renewals overstates what works.

3. No handling of deSEC throttling (desec.rs:176-238, 259-292, 329-354)
deSEC limits RRset writes to 2/s and 15/min per domain, and reads to 10/s and 50/min. Over the limit it returns 429 with Retry-After. Every request here is sent once, and a 429 becomes ApiError. A managed record update makes three writes (marker prepare, record, marker finalize), so the last write can get a 429 after DNS has already changed, leaving ManagedRecordMarkerNotFinalized. Suggested fix: one shared send helper that retries a bounded number of times and honors Retry-After (in line with temps_core::retry::RetryConfig), maps a final 429 to DnsError::RateLimited, and makes fewer calls (see the redundant-write item below; also, each method currently re-runs resolve_zone).

Non-blocking

  • Error mapping: 401/403 become ApiError, which the API returns as 502. test_connection also passes the error up instead of returning Ok(false) like Cloudflare, DigitalOcean and Route53, so provider_service.rs:722 never records last_error. A mistyped token currently shows as "Bad Gateway". Map them to InvalidCredentials/PermissionDenied.
  • Redundant writes (desec.rs:800-802): the RRset is rewritten whenever request.ttl != rrset.ttl, even when the clamped TTL equals the current one. ACME asks for 120 and deSEC's default minimum_ttl is 3600, so every challenge create costs a PATCH. Compare against the computed ttl instead.
  • Inconsistent TTL fallback: when minimum_ttl is missing, create_record uses 3600 as the minimum and update_record uses 0 (desec.rs:785 vs 880).
  • Non-atomic rename (desec.rs:840-844): changing a record's name or type deletes the old value before creating the new one, so a failed create loses the record. Create first, then remove.
  • Read-modify-write race: a GET followed by a full-RRset PATCH or POST is not atomic. Two concurrent writers to the same name can drop a value, or the second POST can fail with 400. The module doc (desec.rs:6-8) claims it is safe for concurrent writes. Please either re-read and retry on conflict, or soften the comment.
  • Record IDs and deSEC normalization (possible): IDs and contains/position matching use the locally formatted string. If deSEC stores a normalized form (for example a compressed AAAA), IDs from create_record won't match and deletes become a silent RecordNotFound. Comparing via DnsRecordContent::canonical() would make this robust.

Unrelated churn, please revert

  • crates/temps-captcha-wasm/pkg/temps_captcha_wasm_bg.wasm: a local rebuild; imports and exports are identical to main
  • examples/{example,indexnow,lighthouse}-plugin/web/tsconfig.tsbuildinfo: only filename casing changed

Suggested live test once fixed

  1. Add the provider with a bad token and check you get a clear credentials error
  2. Issue an apex certificate: finalize should return 200, and the TXT values should be gone from deSEC
  3. Issue a certificate for a subdomain and for a wildcard (two values at the same _acme-challenge name)
  4. Publish a managed app record, then change its IP (three writes in quick succession: the throttling path)

Checked

  • cargo check -p temps-dns passes with no warnings
  • cargo test -p temps-dns --lib passes (576 tests)
  • CLI tests for dns and dns-providers pass (47), and tsc --noEmit is clean for the CLI
  • The generated TS types match the Rust OpenAPI schema ('desec')

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c8e2e

Pressing Enter repeatedly while the deSEC provider is being created can send duplicate creation requests, and the new web flow has no regression tests. Neither blocks the feature, so the PR can merge with these as follow-ups.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c8e2e

The integration retains authentication, credential protection, and bounded network requests. The main concern is shared-record isolation: operations presented as changes to individual values rewrite an entire DNS record set, so concurrent writers can lose sibling values or undo cleanup. This requires writers targeting the same record set; broader unauthorized access was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: deSEC is newly admitted to exact-value ACME cleanup, but value-level creation and deletion rewrite the full shared RRset under only an in-process lock. Independent writers can read the same snapshot and overwrite each other's changes: a cleanup can discard a newly published sibling challenge, or a later stale write can restore a value already reported deleted. This affects validation-state cleanup and failure containment within the contested name/type RRset. Database locking in managed-record operations is counterevidence for that path, but does not establish coordination across all provider consumers or external writers; actual multi-writer deployment exposure remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The integration's external authority is the set of DNS domains and RRsets accessible to the supplied deSEC token. That authority can affect routing and certificate-validation records. Production token grants and tenant or environment restrictions were not supplied. The identified concurrency failure operates within a contested RRset, not automatically across every resource accessible to the token.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained concern is an interleaving of otherwise permitted writes, not a demonstrated unauthenticated exploit. For example, cleanup and creation can read the same RRset, then submit conflicting replacement lists. A stale replacement can erase a sibling value or restore removed challenge material despite successful individual responses. Exploitability depends on another writer reaching that same name and type.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider creation and credential replacement retain RequireAuth, DNS-provider write permission, and credential testing before persistence. The inspected unattended renewal path also requires an explicit automation-policy allowance before decrypting provider credentials.
  • observed — Authenticated outbound requests use a fixed HTTPS API origin with redirects disabled. Pagination rejects a next link whose origin differs or whose path falls outside the configured API prefix, limiting server-provided navigation before another authenticated request is sent.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — There are meaningful containment controls: serialized provider operations preserve sibling values; challenge cleanup uses persisted record IDs, accepts already-absent records, and retains failed deletions for retry. Separately, managed-record cleanup coordinates through database locks and conservatively treats multiple values at one name/type as unmanaged rather than deleting an uncertain owner.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish a single-writer policy or shared coordination for all application mutations of a deSEC RRset, including challenge publication and cleanup. Explicitly document that application locks cannot coordinate independent external writers when the provider offers no conditional-write primitive.
  • proposed — Before relying on cross-name or cross-type moves in production, define recovery for transport errors and interruption after a remote mutation may have succeeded. Reconcile source and destination state before destructive compensation rather than assuming every reported removal error means the source remains present.

Explanation

The title "feat(dns): add support for deSEC DNS provider" states the main change. The changeset adds a deSEC DNS provider to temps-dns (provider, credentials, provider type, service wiring, and tests), and exposes it in temps-cli, the web UI, and docs. The PR objectives describe the same goal, so the title matches the primary change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1605] The only directly linked issue is active (open). It requires deSEC support as a DNS provider, using the deSEC API with token-based authentication. The whole-PR summary (merge base 483e051 to head c8e2e25) shows these implementing changes:

  • crates/temps-dns/src/providers/desec.rs adds DeSecProvider with zone lookup, record management through the deSEC RRset API, and HTTPS requests with token authentication.
  • crates/temps-dns/src/providers/credentials.rs adds DeSecCredentials { api_token } with redacted Debug and masking.
  • crates/temps-dns/src/providers/traits.rs adds DnsProviderType::DeSec, mapped to desec and to required credential api_token.
  • crates/temps-dns/src/services/provider_service.rs builds the provider and tests credentials for the deSEC variant.
  • crates/temps-dns/src/handlers/mod.rs adds the DnsProviderCredentials::DeSec variant.

The summary reports unit tests in desec.rs and traits.rs and credential tests in credentials.rs. They cover parsing, TTL and value handling, RRset preservation, pagination, retries, and typed authentication errors. The summary also reports a deSEC cleanup test in crates/temps-domains/src/handlers/domain_handler.rs. The PR comments about test environments, build issues, and the author's manual domain testing are not coding requirements of #1605. Source lines were not read directly. The assessment relies on the whole-PR summary, which establishes the required behavior. No coding requirement of #1605 is unmet on the available evidence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changes in the whole-PR summary support the deSEC provider or its exposure, as the PR description requires:

  • Backend: provider, credentials, type enum, handler and service wiring, public re-exports, and the url workspace dependency in crates/temps-dns/Cargo.toml for URL handling in the provider.
  • Domain cleanup: crates/temps-domains/src/handlers/domain_handler.rs allows DNS cleanup for deSEC record IDs. This supports DNS-01 automation with the new provider.
  • CLI: apps/temps-cli/src/commands/dns*, generated types, openapi.json, and CLI docs add deSEC to existing provider flows. The PR description names the CLI as a required exposure point.
  • Web: AddDnsProvider.tsx, DnsProviderDetail.tsx, DnsProviders.tsx, icons, command palette, and generated client types add deSEC to existing flows. The PR description names the web UI as a required exposure point.
  • Docs: docs/concepts/domains-ssl/page.mdx lists deSEC.

The rename of a test function in traits.rs from unparseable to unparsable is a spelling fix. It does not change behavior. The provider hardening in desec.rs (redirect handling, retry limits, pagination bounds, keyed write lock, rollback) belongs to the provider implementation. It does not add unrelated behavior. Ignored lockfiles and build artifacts were excluded and were not used as evidence. No unrelated change was demonstrated.

Handle multi-label relative record names in to_subname.

DnsRecordRequest.name is relative to the zone, so names such as _acme-challenge.api and app.preview are valid. The current name.contains('.') check rejects them before deSEC creates the record.

Use the trailing root dot to distinguish absolute names from multi-label relative names.

# Retrieving and Creating DNS Records

All DNS information is composed of so-called Resource Record Sets (RRsets). An RRset is the set of all Resource Records of a given record type for a given name. For example, the name `example.com` may have an RRset of type `A`, denoting the set of IPv4 addresses associated with this name. In the traditional BIND zone file format, the RRset would be written as:

    <name>  3600  IN  A  127.0.0.1
    <name>  3600  IN  A  127.0.0.2
    ...

where 3600 is the number of seconds for which DNS resolvers may cache the information before asking again (time-to-live, short: TTL).

Each of these lines is a Resource Record, and together they form an RRset.

The basic units accessible through the API are RRsets (not individual Resource Records). The TTL is a property of an RRset; and all records of an RRset therefore share the record type and also the TTL.

RRsets are each represented by a JSON object. The object structure is detailed in the next section.

The relevant endpoints all reside under `/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/`, where `{name}` is the name of a domain you own.
## Modifying an RRset

To modify an RRset, use the endpoint that you would also use to retrieve that specific RRset. The API allows changing the values of `records` and `ttl`. When using the `PATCH` method, only fields you would like to modify need to be provided. In contrast, if you use `PUT`, the full resource must be specified (that is, all fields, including `subname` and `type`). Examples:

    curl -X PUT https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/{subname}/{type}/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}" \
        --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<EOF
        {
          "subname": "{subname}",
          "type": "{type}",
          "ttl": 3600,
          "records": ["..."]
        }
    EOF

    curl -X PATCH https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/{subname}/{type}/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}" \
        --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<< \
        '{"ttl": 86400}'

If the RRset was updated successfully, the API returns `200 OK` with the updated RRset in the response body. An exception to this rule is when an empty array is provided as the `records` field, in which case the RRset is deleted and the return code is `204 No Content` (cf. Deleting an RRset).

In case the operation cannot be performed with the given parameters, the API returns `400 Bad Request`. This can happen, for instance, when there is a conflicting RRset with the same name and type, when not all required fields were provided correctly (such as, when the `type` value was not provided in uppercase), or when the record content is semantically invalid (e.g. when you provide an unknown record type, or an `A` value that is not an IPv4 address).

To modify an RRset at the zone apex (empty subname), use the special subname value `@` in the endpoint URL (read more about Accessing the Zone Apex).

### Bulk Modification of RRsets

It is sometimes desirable to modify several RRsets at once. This is achieved by sending an array of RRset objects to the `rrsets/` endpoint (instead of just one), like this:

    curl -X PUT https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}" \
        --header "Conten…[truncated]</excerpt>

Instead, the origin server MAY indicate that the conditional request failed by responding with a 412 (Precondition Failed) status code. ... In other cases, excluding the ETag field from a success response might encourage the user agent to perform a GET as its next request to eliminate confusion about the resource's current state.
## 13. Conditional Requests

A conditional request is an HTTP request with one or more request header fields that indicate a precondition to be tested before applying the request method to the target resource. Section 13.2 defines when to evaluate preconditions and their order of precedence when more than one precondition is present.¶

Conditional GET requests are the most efficient mechanism for HTTP cache updates [CACHING]. Conditionals can also be applied to state-changing methods, such as PUT and DELETE, to prevent the "lost update" problem: one client accidentally overwriting the work of another client that has been acting in parallel.¶

### 13.1. Preconditions

Preconditions are usually defined with respect to a state of the target resource as a whole (its current value set) or the state as observed in a previously obtained representation (one value in that set). If a resource has multiple current representations, each with its own observable state, a precondition will assume that the mapping of each request to a selected representation (Section 3.2) is consistent over time. 1828†¶】

Extensibility of preconditions is only possible when the precondition can be safely ignored if unknown (like If-Modified-Since), when deployment can be assumed for a given use case, or when implementation is signaled by some other property of the target resource. This encourages a focus on mutually agreed deployment of common standards.¶

#### 13.1.1. If-Match

The "If-Match" header field makes the request method conditional on the recipient origin server either having at least one current representation of the target resource, when the field value is "*", or having a current representation of the target resource that has an entity tag matching a member of the list of entity tags provided in the field value.¶

An origin server MUST use the strong comparison function when comparing entity tags for If-Match (Section 8.8.3.2), since the client intends this precondition to prevent the method from being applied if there have been any changes to the representation data.【</excerpt>

# Welcome to the deSEC DNS API

The deSEC DNS API is a REST interface that allows easy management of DNS information. The interface design aims for simplicity so that tasks such as creating domains and manipulating DNS records can be handled with ease and in an intuitive fashion.

Server-side operations, such as creation of domains or DNS records, generally expect JSON-formatted user input in the body of the `POST`, `PATCH`, or `PUT` request (see below). Unless otherwise documented, requests are expected to come with a `Content-Type: application/json` header field and to be sent via HTTPS using state-of-the-art encryption. (Outdated setups, e.g. TLS < 1.2, are not supported.)

API functionality is demonstrated using the command line tool `curl`. To pretty-print JSON output, process the data through `jq`: `curl ... | jq .`.

Windows users: We are told that the `curl` commands in this documentation sometimes do not work. In this case, try moving the request payload in front of the `curl` call, like this:

<excerpt>citeturn0search3 [wordlim: 200] Published: 4.4 years ago; Crawled: today; Although conditional request header fields are defined as being usable with the HEAD method (to keep HEAD's semantics consistent with those of GET), there is no point in sending a conditional HEAD because a successful response is around the same size as a 304 (Not Modified) response and more useful than a 412 (Precondition Failed) response.

When more than one conditional request header field is present in a request, the order in which the fields are evaluated becomes important. In practice, the fields defined in this document are consistently implemented in a single, logical order, since "lost update" preconditions have more strict requirements than cache validation, a validated cache is more efficient than a partial response, and entity tags are presumed to be more accurate than date validators.¶

A recipient cache or origin server MUST evaluate the request preconditions defined by this specification in the following order:¶

  1. When recipient is the origin server and If-Match is present, evaluate the If-Match precondition:¶

     * if true, continue to step 3¶
     * if false, respond 412 (Precondition Failed) unless it can be determined that the state-changing request has already succeeded (see Section 13.1.1)¶

Retrieving and Creating DNS Records — deSEC DNS API documentation

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last week; If more than 500 items would match the query, the use of the `cursor` query parameter is required. ... This will return only one RRset (i.e., the response is not a JSON array). ... curl -X PATCH https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/{subname}/{type}/ \ ... If the RRset was updated successfully, the API returns `200 OK` with the updated RRset in the response body.

## Retrieving all RRsets in a Zone

The `/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/` endpoint responds to `GET` requests with an array of RRset objects. For example, you may issue the following command:

    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}"

to retrieve the contents of a zone that you own. RRsets are returned in reverse chronological order of their creation.

The response status code in case of success is `200 OK`. This is true also if there are no RRsets in the zone; in this case, the response body will be an empty JSON array.

### Pagination

Up to 500 items are returned at a time. If more than 500 items would match the query, the use of the `cursor` query parameter is required. The first page can be retrieved by sending an empty pagination parameter, `cursor=`.

Once in pagination mode, the URLs to retrieve the next (or previous) page are given in the `Link:` response header. For example:

    Link: <https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{domain}/rrsets/?

Query parameters used for filtering are fully compatible with pagination.

### Filtering by Subname

To filter the RRsets array by subname (e.g. to retrieve all records in the `www` subdomain, regardless of their type), use the `subname` query parameter, like this:

    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/?subname={subname} \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}"

This approach also allows to retrieve all records associated with the zone apex (i.e. `example.com` where `subname` is empty), by querying `rrsets/?subname=`.

Query parameters used for filtering are fully compatible with pagination.

## Retrieving a Specific RRset

To retrieve an RRset with a specific name and type from your zone (e.g. the `A` record for the `www` subdomain), issue a `GET` request with the `subname` information and the type appended to the `rrsets/` endpoint, like this:

    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/{subname}/{type}/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}"

This will return only one RRset (i.e., the response is not a JSON array). The response status code is `200 OK` if the requested RRset exists, and `404 Not Found` otherwise.

### Accessing the Zone Apex

Note: The RRset at the zone apex (the domain root with an empty subname) cannot be queried via `/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets//{type}/`. This is due to normalization rules of the HTTP specification which cause the double-slash `//` to be replaced with a single slash `/`, breaking the URL structure.

To access an RRset at the root of your domain, we reserved the special subname value `@`. This is a common placeholder for this use case (see RFC 1035). As an example, you can retrieve the IPv4 address(es) of your domain root by running:

    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/@/A/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}"

Pro tip: If you like to have the convenience of simple string expansion in the URL, you can add three dots after `{subname}`, like so:

    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/{name}/rrsets/{subname}.../{type}/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token {secret}"

With this syntax, the above-mentioned normalization problem does not occur, and no special treatment is needed for accessing the zone apex. You can think of the three dots as abbreviating the rest of the DNS name.

The HTTP **`If-Match`** {{Glossary("request header")}} makes a request [conditional](/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Guides/Conditional_requests).

A server will return resources for {{HTTPMethod("GET")}} and {{HTTPMethod("HEAD")}} methods, or upload resource for {{HTTPMethod("PUT")}} and other non-safe methods, only if the resource matches one of the {{HTTPHeader("ETag")}} values in the `If-Match` request header.

If the conditional does not match, the {{HTTPStatus("412", "412 Precondition Failed")}} response is returned instead.

The comparison with the stored {{HTTPHeader("ETag")}} uses the _strong comparison algorithm_, meaning two files are considered identical byte-by-byte.

If a listed `ETag` has the `W/` prefix indicating a weak entity tag, this comparison algorithm will never match it.

There are two common use cases:

- For {{HTTPMethod("GET")}} and {{HTTPMethod("HEAD")}} methods, used in combination with a {{HTTPHeader("Range")}} header, it can guarantee that the new ranges requested

come from the same resource as the previous one.

- For other methods, and in particular for {{HTTPMethod("PUT")}}, `If-Match` can be used to prevent the [lost update problem](https://www.w3.org/1999/04/Editing/#3.1).

It can check if the modification of a resource that the user wants to upload will not override another change that has been done since the original resource was fetched.

If-Match: <etag_value>

If-Match: <etag_value>, <etag_value>, …

## Directives

- `<etag_value>`

- : Entity tags uniquely representing the requested resources.

They are a string of {{Glossary("ASCII")}} characters placed between double quotes (like `"675af34563dc-tr34"`).

They may be prefixed by `W/` to indicate that they are 'weak', i.e., that they represent the resource semantically but not byte-by-byte.

However, in an `If-Match` header, weak entity tags will never match.

- `*`

- : The asterisk is a special value representing any resource.

Note that this must match as `false` if the origin server does not have a current representation for the target resource.

## Examples

```http
Manage Tokens — deSEC DNS API documentation
<location>https://desec.readthedocs.io/en/latest/auth/tokens.html</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; Note that the API in addition exposes some metadata, such as the RRset’s `created` or `touched` timestamps. ... Wildcards are not expanded and match only RRsets with an identical wildcard `subname`. ... Token policy ID, used for identification only (e.g. when modifying a policy). ... If the `perm_write` permission flag is not given, it is assumed to be `false`. ... You can retrieve (`GET`), update (`PATCH`, `PUT`), and remove (`DELETE`) policies by appending their `id` to the endpoint:
Semantics, input validation, and error handling follow the same style as the rest of the API, so is not documented in detail here. For example, to retrieve a list of policies for a given token, issue a `GET` request as follows:
    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/auth/tokens/{id}/policies/rrsets/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token mu4W4MHuSc0Hy-GD1h_dnKuZBond"
The server will respond with a list of token policy objects.
To create the default policy, send a `POST` request like:
    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/auth/tokens/{id}/policies/rrsets/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token mu4W4MHuSc0Hy-GD1h_dnKuZBond" \
        --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<< \
        '{"domain": null, "subname": null, "type": null}'
This will create a default policy. If the `perm_write` permission flag is not given, it is assumed to be `false`.
As an example, let’s create a policy that only allows manipulating all A records for a specific domain:
    curl https://desec.io/api/v1/auth/tokens/{id}/policies/rrsets/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token mu4W4MHuSc0Hy-GD1h_dnKuZBond" \
        --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<< \
        '{"domain": "example.dedyn.io", "subname": null, "type": "A", "perm_write": true}'
Tip: To authorize dual-stack dynDNS updates, create two policies (for access to the A and AAAA RRsets, respectively).
You can retrieve (`GET`), update (`PATCH`, `PUT`), and remove (`DELETE`) policies by appending their `id` to the endpoint:
    curl -X DELETE https://desec.io/api/v1/auth/tokens/{token.id}/policies/rrsets/{policy.id}/ \
        --header "Authorization: Token mu4W4MHuSc0Hy-GD1h_dnKuZBond"
When modifying or deleting policies, the API enforces the default policy’s primacy: You cannot create specific policies without first creating a default policy, and you cannot remove a default policy when other policies are still in place.
During deletion of tokens, users, or domains, policies are cleaned up automatically.
# Problem doing bulk updates to my domain
tkoeller February 5, 2026, 12:01am 1
I am creating a script that includes a function to update several rrsets:
    `domain='krokinole.de'
    curl_opts='-GsS -m 5 --retry 5 --retry-max-time 60'
    auth_opts='Authorization: Token [redacted]'
    function dns_update ()
    {
      curl -X PATCH ${curl_opts}  \
        "https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/${domain}/rrsets/" \
        --header "Content-Type: application/json" --header "${auth_opts}" \
        -d @- <<EOF
        [
          {"subname": "sarkovy, "type": "CNAME", "ttl": 3600, "records": ["${1}"]},
          {"subname": "mail", "type": "CNAME", "ttl": 3600, "records": ["${1}"]},
          {"subname": "", "type": "MX", "records": ["10 ${1}"]}
        ]
    EOF
    }
    `
The function argument is a valid domain string. I copied the code from here, slightly modified. Executing the function always produces an error from curl:
    `curl: (3) URL rejected: Malformed input to a URL function
    `
I just can’t figure out the reason.
GenericUser February 5, 2026, 4:01am 2
The reason is that, in contrast to the example code, your code uses -G to make curl append all the data you send to the server, the part between <<EOF and EOF, to the URL as the query string. Because the data becomes part of the URL, curl expects some characters to be encoded and throws that error when they occur unencoded. Spaces for example cannot occur unencoded in a URL.
Now that you know what causes the error, note that the API does not specify GET as a valid method.
tkoeller February 5, 2026, 1:40pm 3
Thanks! So ‘-G’ takes precedence over ‘-X’? I didn’t expect that.
GenericUser February 5, 2026, 4:14pm 4
What’s the point of -G then if you didn’t expect it to do anything anyway? An AI told you to put that there, didn’t it?
tkoeller February 5, 2026, 4:41pm 5
No. That was a leftover from an earlier stage in the development of the script I’m writing.</excerpt>
Serialize deSEC RRset read-modify-write operations.
DeSecProvider::create_record and remove_value read the full RRset, change a local copy, and send the whole records list with PATCH. The existing-RRset path of update_record does the same. Two overlapping calls on the same (zone, subname, type) can read the same list. The later PATCH then drops the value that the earlier call wrote. Two calls that create an absent RRset can both select POST. The losing request then fails and returns DnsError::ApiError.
The inspected deSEC RRset documentation describes PATCH without a precondition header. The write cannot detect a stale list. Hold the full read, modify, and write sequence under one lock keyed by (zone, subname, type). Keep that lock in a process-wide registry, not in a per-instance field, because providers can be shared and constructed separately. The keyed-lock pattern in crates/temps-dns/src/services/managed_records.rs can serve as a model.
This lock covers one process only. A re-read after a write does not stop a stale write from another process, so do not rely on it. Cross-process writers need a shared external lock, or all writers must go through one process.
If POST reports that the RRset already exists, re-read the RRset and send PATCH while holding the same lock.
Serialize each deSEC RRset read-modify-write sequence in create_record,
remove_value, and the existing-RRset path of update_record with a process-wide
keyed lock on (zone, subname, type), following the managed_records keyed-lock
pattern. Hold the lock from the initial read through the write; if POST reports
that the RRset already exists, re-read it and PATCH while still holding that
lock. Do not rely on a re-read after writing to protect against writers in other
processes.
Create the replacement before removing the old value.
When the name or type changes, update_record removes the old value before create_record. A later deSEC lookup or write error can therefore return Err after the old value was deleted.
Create the replacement first. If removing the old value fails, restore the destination RRset or remove only the value added by this update. Preserve destination values that existed before the update.
Update the name-or-type-change branch in update_record to create the replacement
before removing the old value, so a failed create leaves the original intact. If
removing the old value then fails, roll back only the value added by this update
@dviejokfs thanks for the very helpful comments! I think I have now addressed them and tested on my domain + VPS. In addition to your suggested tests, I was able to set up domains managed by the deSEC provider and get certificates for:
mydomain.tld
*.mydomain.tld
preview.mydomain.tld
*.preview.mydomain.tld
Guard the shared DNS-provider submission path.
useEnterSubmit calls handleSubmit for Enter in the token field. handleSubmit starts asynchronous validation without checking createProviderMut.isPending, and the mutation has no pending guard. Repeated Enter presses can therefore issue multiple creation requests. All DNS providers in this wizard use the same unguarded path.
Use a synchronous in-flight submission guard around form.handleSubmit. Release it on validation failure and when the mutation settles. Checking only createProviderMut.isPending is not sufficient because concurrent validation calls can start before the mutation becomes pending.
