Optionally auto-join new public Slack channels #2384

Open

Description

@sentry-junior

Junior joins public channels only on demand or when someone invites it, so it is missing from newly created public channels until someone adds it manually. Some other Slack apps appear in new channels without an invite. Operators should be able to opt in to automatic joins.

Current state

  • packages/junior/slack-manifest.yml already requests channels:read and channels:join.
  • bot_events does not include channel_created, so Junior does not receive channel creation events.
  • joinPublicChannel in packages/junior/src/chat/slack/channel.ts already wraps conversations.join for on-demand joins.
  • Slack sends channel_created for new channels (requires channels:read), and conversations.join lets a bot join a public channel (requires channels:join).

Requested scope (proposed by David Cramer)

  • Make this a bot config option in createApp that operators can turn on or off.
  • Default it to disabled.

Open questions

  • Whether to backfill existing public channels when the option is enabled, or only join channels created afterward.
  • Whether installs need to update their Slack app event subscriptions and reinstall to receive channel_created.
