Review Change Stack

Walkthrough

Maintained-app definitions are updated for newer ChatGPT, CLion, Kitty, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Outlook, Pika, and Super Productivity releases. Their version checks, installer URLs, and SHA-256 checksums are refreshed. ChatGPT’s installation and uninstallation scripts change, and Microsoft Outlook switches to a new installer script and package.

20-20: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Avoid hardcoding the installer package filename.

The install script hardcodes the .pkg filename when invoking installer. This introduces a maintenance burden on every version bump and could cause the installation to fail if the downloaded filename changes in the future. The $INSTALLER_PATH environment variable reliably provides the full path to the downloaded payload.

Inside the "1fb85dbd" JSON string, replace the hardcoded path with "$INSTALLER_PATH":

- sudo installer -pkg "$TMPDIR"/Microsoft_Outlook_16.111.26071325_Installer.pkg -target / -applyChoiceChangesXML "$CHOICE_XML"
+ sudo installer -pkg "$INSTALLER_PATH" -target / -applyChoiceChangesXML "$CHOICE_XML"

- Line 19: Update the uninstall commands in script string 678e6cf0: replace the
quoted literal '~/.codex' rmdir call with trash using LOGGED_IN_USER, and
replace the trash call for the system-wide CodexComputerUseAuthorizationPlugin
path with sudo rm -rf. Preserve the existing quoting and command order.
- Line 19: Update the uninstall sequence in the JSON script entry "678e6cf0" to
call quit_application for the main bundle ID com.openai.chat before quitting
com.openai.codex and deleting ChatGPT.app. Also review the existing trash
cleanup calls in trash and add com.openai.chat-specific caches or preferences,
including its plist, where applicable.

INSTALL_LOCATION instead of the computed FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION. Update its sed
path prefix to use FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION, matching the preceding echo command
while leaving the rest of the pipeline unchanged.
- Line 19: Add a quit_application call for the main Outlook bundle identifier
com.microsoft.Outlook in the uninstall sequence, before remove_launchctl_service
and the existing com.microsoft.autoupdate2 quit_application call, while
preserving the current cleanup order otherwise.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick win

Fix path removal logic in the uninstall script.

There are two critical issues with the path removals in the "678e6cf0" script string:

  1. Literal string prevents expansion: Single quotes around ~/.codex prevent shell tilde expansion. sudo rmdir '~/.codex' will attempt to delete a literal directory named ~/.codex in the working directory, which will fail. This should use the trash function or sudo rm -rf "/Users/$LOGGED_IN_USER/.codex".
  2. Root-owned files in user Trash: Using trash $LOGGED_IN_USER on the system-wide /Library/Application Support/CodexComputerUseAuthorizationPlugin directory will move root-owned files into the user's .Trash. When standard users try to empty their trash, they will face permission errors or admin prompts. System-wide files should be permanently deleted using sudo rm -rf.

Inside the "678e6cf0" JSON string, update the script as follows:

- sudo rmdir '~/.codex'
- trash $LOGGED_IN_USER '/Library/Application Support/CodexComputerUseAuthorizationPlugin'
+ trash $LOGGED_IN_USER '~/.codex'
+ sudo rm -rf '/Library/Application Support/CodexComputerUseAuthorizationPlugin'

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick win

Add quit_application for the main app bundle.

The uninstall script attempts to quit com.openai.codex, but the main application bundle ID (as checked by the exists query and handled in the install script) is com.openai.chat.

If com.openai.chat is running during uninstallation, it will not be terminated, leaving a ghost process in memory after ChatGPT.app is forcefully deleted from disk.

Inside the "678e6cf0" JSON string, update the quit sequence to terminate the main app:

+ quit_application 'com.openai.chat'
  quit_application 'com.openai.codex'
  sudo rm -rf "$APPDIR/ChatGPT.app"

Additionally, verify whether com.openai.chat specific caches and preferences (e.g., ~/Library/Preferences/com.openai.chat.plist) should also be added to the cleanup list.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the path substitution in the remove_receipt_files command.

In the remove_receipt_files function, the executed pkgutil pipeline uses /${INSTALL_LOCATION}/ for path substitution, while the preceding echo command correctly uses ${FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION}/. If $VOLUME is not /, the executed command will target the wrong absolute path and fail to remove the files.

Inside the "0aa6f641" JSON string, update the sed replacement string in the executed command to match the echo statement:

- sudo pkgutil --only-files --files "$PKGID" | sed "s|^|/${INSTALL_LOCATION}/|" | tr '\n' '\0' | /usr/bin/sudo -u root -E -- /usr/bin/xargs -0 -- /bin/rm -rf
+ sudo pkgutil --only-files --files "$PKGID" | sed "s|^|${FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION}/|" | tr '\n' '\0' | /usr/bin/sudo -u root -E -- /usr/bin/xargs -0 -- /bin/rm -rf

In `@ee/maintained-apps/outputs/microsoft-outlook/darwin.json` at line 19, The
executed file-removal pipeline in remove_receipt_files uses INSTALL_LOCATION
instead of the computed FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION. Update its sed path prefix to use
FULL_INSTALL_LOCATION, matching the preceding echo command while leaving the
rest of the pipeline unchanged.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add quit_application for the Outlook app.

The uninstall script quits the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool (com.microsoft.autoupdate2), but it does not quit the main Outlook application (com.microsoft.Outlook). If Outlook is running during uninstallation, it will not be terminated cleanly before its package files are forcefully removed.

Inside the "0aa6f641" JSON string, add the main app to the quit sequence:

+ quit_application 'com.microsoft.Outlook'
  remove_launchctl_service 'com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper'
  quit_application 'com.microsoft.autoupdate2'

In `@ee/maintained-apps/outputs/microsoft-outlook/darwin.json` at line 19, Add a
quit_application call for the main Outlook bundle identifier
com.microsoft.Outlook in the uninstall sequence, before remove_launchctl_service
and the existing com.microsoft.autoupdate2 quit_application call, while
preserving the current cleanup order otherwise.
