In this screenshot, @benpa:matrix.org has no avatar or placeholder ("initial") avatar and no display name in #matrix:matrix.org

    this is missing state and fixed by a cache clear (though that would mean you can't find what causes it :) )

    Accessing HQ over my federated account on lant.uk rendered exactly as in the picture above.
    Accessing HQ using a fresh test account on matrix.org rendered fine.
