Broken Links (was "Link Checker")

[bcgwebdesign]

Using an external link checker I'll post the results here along with what I used with what parameters

[bcgwebdesign]

So this was using external site that has some nice paid for options but using the free version I just copied and pasted the results that showed up as broken links.

https://www.drlinkcheck.com/

I think there were 64 broken links - not sure how deep the recursion went

[cazinc]

Note to self: first pass fix any obvious bad URLs, and if it's clear that something links to a page that should exist but doesn't, create a stub for that page (e.g. translations of Handbook). Then rerun and pass to others for any issues that require content creation. Update any list of "pages that may need migrated" if some come up.

[cazinc]

I have now fixed broken links that were a result of our migration, reducing the total number from 64 to 52. Full list below.

The remaining broken links can roughly be categorised like this:

1. Links to pages that don't exist, and won't exist in the new site (e.g. VMF). For these, the links need removed (and possibly copy updated)
2. Links to pages/PDFs that don't exist, but should - in which case these pages need created or PDFs brought over.
3. External links - I think some are valid 404s on the other side and some are just example links that were never going to work.

Next step is for someone to review each one and fix what they can in the content.

latest update from the link checker - quite a few in the data dictionary pages in the handbook
a few on the translation links too.

Here's the latest

[cazinc]

Hi all,

I've scanned through the new broken links in the Data Dictionary since it was me that did the migration on this, and they are almost all pre-existing 404s in the live site.

For example:

• New link: https://staging.doi.org/the-identifier/resources/handbook/schemas/dd/idd_primaryLanguage.html
• Old link: https://www.doi.org/doi_handbook/schemas/dd/idd_primaryLanguage.html

There seem to be a quite a few missing pages on the current site in this directory ../doi_handbook/schemas/

I have fixed a few more 404s that were errors in the migration though, and we've implemented a config change that should take care of quite a few "false" 404s (example links like https://www.doi.org/10.1000/demo that weren't meant to be actual links, but that Hugo has been "linkifying" because of a default setting.
