fix(chat): submit Codex Send now without waiting for a tool call - #783
Conversation
📝 Summary
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Send now can report a message as sent without Codex accepting it. Resolve the steering-entry attribution and Escape-write guard risks before merging. Pre-merge checks |

- Around line 27-29: Update codexSteeringPending and the dispatchPendingText
submission flow to correlate the native steering entry before and after Enter
with the text being submitted. Send Escape and confirm delivery only when the
new entry is identifiable as that submitted text; otherwise leave delivery
unconfirmed.
- Line 43: Update interruptCodexSteering so current.working being false does not
by itself confirm delivery; inspect current.screen and return an uncertain
outcome unless it confirms acceptance, so dispatchPendingText does not settle an
unconfirmed submission as successful.

…791) ## Change When an agent's structured conversation is not yet available, ChatView used to await a terminal read even while its terminal-output disclosure was folded. A stalled read held the serialized conversation reader and delayed initial display and later structured answers. Agent terminal fallback now reads independently, only while its disclosure is open and the page is visible. Non-agent scrollback stays inline. Conversation/terminal HTTP headers and JSON/error bodies share a 15-second deadline; a timed-out late answer cannot replace the conversation ETag cache. Changing the agent in the same pane reinstalls and immediately refreshes the reader. This standalone change is separate from #650's Codex session identity work and #783's Send now behavior. It adds ko/ja/zh timeout labels, documentation/changelog and registered/typechecked browser coverage without private APIs or deployment configuration. ## Validation - Generated schema freshness, full typecheck and production build: pass. - Full unit suite: 2,508 pass, 50 skip, 0 fail (138.02s). Header/body stalls, ignored-abort late body and ETag identity/recovery covered. - Actual ChatView browser: no hidden terminal read; an opened stalled fallback cannot block structured refresh; late cleanup; same-pane agent-kind change resumes reads; non-agent output remains inline. - Complete official browser lane: pass (492.2s), including the new regression. - Independent implementation review: GO; agent-change polling finding reproduced and fixed before re-review. - Workflow syntax skipped (actionlint unavailable); no workflow YAML changed. No separate Native integration pass is claimed: unchanged-server baseline comparison is recorded in #787/#788. Fork CI requires maintainer approval. Synthetic [closed fallback screenshot](https://github.com/kilhyeonjun/herdr-web-ui/blob/fix/chat-read-fallback-20261011/docs/screenshots/chat-fallback/terminal-fallback-closed.png). ## Review follow-up Addressed both posted review findings: agent terminal fallback no longer presents an empty-conversation prompt, and terminal-read failures use `role="alert"`. The actual ChatView browser regression reproduced both before the fixes and now verifies fallback/failure, the ordinary empty structured-conversation prompt, non-agent inline output and stale cleanup. Frozen final commit `a1ff9a3`: generated freshness, typecheck, build and full unit pass (2508 pass, 50 skip, zero failures; unit 138.33s). The previously reported full browser lane ran on `22f707b`; the updated focused actual-component browser regression passed for the two UI fixes, with refreshed synthetic evidence. Changelog now links this PR and credits its author. Validation remains against public baseline `2f6bb46`; latest observed main `5eafefc` is separate, and full Native/Windows/updated-main integration is not claimed. --------- Co-authored-by: Hako <devswha@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Co-authored-by: devswha <devswha@users.noreply.github.com>

…interrupts it Codex 0.162 draws a shortcuts hint under its composer, which the footer check refused, so Send now on a working Codex never found the steering panel and reported every message as unconfirmed. The panel's last entry must now be the message the bridge just pasted (whitespace-insensitive, a prefix when Codex cuts a long entry), so an entry that was already waiting never authorizes Escape (CodeRabbit review). Merges main (0.4.8); the changelog entry moves to Unreleased and the design note leaves Checks for its own section.

…ard the Escape write Review follow-ups on devswha#783 (Codex astra medium, 2026-10-12): - The Escape that interrupts a working Codex is written through a guard that is asked again when herdr is reached: the sender's lease, the 1.5 s deadline and the pane's status as read must all still hold, or the key is withheld and the message reported unconfirmed (`submit_changed`), as a lapsed lease already was. herdr has no compare-and-send, so the gap between the screen read and the write stays; this closes the cases the bridge can see (a slow RPC past the deadline, a finish or an approval that arrived meanwhile). `PendingInputs.current` exposes the last applied status for it. - `codexSteeringPending` keeps each row's indent: an entry starts at the arrows' indent, a deeper arrow is the message's own text; the steering section ends at the next header, so an end-of-turn or rejected entry is never taken for the steer; a trailing ellipsis counts as Codex's cut only on a row of its own, otherwise it is compared as text. - Unit tests for each case (red on the previous parser), a freshness-check unit test, and two contract tests that hold the key RPC past the deadline and across a status change. Change
On a working Codex pane, Send now pastes the pending message and presses Enter, but Codex can buffer that steering input until its next tool call. The bridge can therefore remove the pending item before Codex has accepted it.
The explicit, connection-owned pending action now checks Codex's live steering panel beside its empty composer, then sends one Escape to interrupt and submit the message. Fresh checks retain terminal/session identity, interact authority, attachment lease, menu and masked-input guards; the lease is checked again when the Escape RPC writes. Ordinary sends and automatic delivery retain their behavior. Upstream Claude Ctrl+Enter and clear-draft handling are preserved.
A restart gate prevents the interrupted turn's temporary readiness from draining another queued message. Missing transition evidence holds the remaining queue for review, and uncertain delivery never retries automatically. No new wire fields or dependencies are introduced.

bun run check fullon55fceeb, with source unchanged, completed in 669.71 s:task_started → turn_aborted → task_started. Official isolated runner passed in 4.83 s (4.69 s inside the probe), with an isolated home/read-only scratch, no credentials and an unavailable loopback provider. This verifies native input acceptance, not a model reply or deployment.55fceeb. Default local browser execution remains serial.9a9be36; the full/native evidence above belongs to55fceeb, whose production server bytes are unchanged in the final head.
