Change

In the chat lens, a tool call's command and output, and a code block with no language, were plain text. A line an agent's tool printed, such as

/tmp/editor-shot/t00000.png (1600, 1000) -> (1255, 960)
display image 1: [image/png]

could not be opened, though the same path written in prose could. (T3 Code links paths in tool output the same way.)

  • Tool command and output, and code blocks with no language (logs, a command's answer) now link file paths with the chat's existing matcher (lib/filePaths.ts, so image/png and version numbers stay text). A click or tap opens the existing file viewer. Since the server reads the file through /api/fs/* (and the machine proxy for a remote PC), this works from a phone or another device as well. A code block in a language stays as it was, so import paths in code are not turned into buttons. Text over 256K stays plain.

  • HTML files open as their page, with a Page | Source switch. /api/fs/file still sends HTML as sandboxed plain text by default. Only render=1 serves text/html, under its own policy (PAGE_POLICY in server/file-view.ts):

    • sandbox allow-scripts without allow-same-origin: the page has no origin, cookie or storage of the app's;
    • default-src 'none' and no connect-src: no fetch, XHR, WebSocket or beacon;
    • nothing loaded from this server: 'self' is left out of img/media, so the page cannot probe which files exist;
    • images, styles, fonts and scripts may come from https:, so a chart built on a CDN library still draws;
    • frame-ancestors 'self', form-action 'none', base-uri 'none'.

    The viewer's iframe also carries sandbox="allow-scripts", which covers any page the frame navigates to.
    A remote PC whose bridge predates render sends the source, and the frame shows it as text.

  • FilePathLink.tsx is now the one path button, shared by Markdown, the tool rows and HighlightedCode.

  • .chat-tool-io > :not(:first-child) no longer gives a link inside an output a top margin.

  • i18n: "Show the HTML file as", "Page", "Source" (ko/ja/zh).

Phone: chat Phone: tapped PNG path

Screenshots come from an isolated check run herdr session with a stand-in Codex transcript.

Validation

  • bun run check fast: generated types, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 2215 pass and 2 fail. Both failures are in server/codex-processes.test.ts ("selects the resumed rollout when Linux foreground metadata omits argv", "keeps the screen binding with recovered argv…"). They fail the same way on an untouched origin/main checkout on this machine, so they come from the environment, not from this change.
  • bun run check integration browser: ok lanes, exit 0. This includes file-viewer-regression.ts.
  • New unit tests:
    • src/lib/markdown.test.ts: a plain fence links /tmp/editor-shot/t00000.png but not image/png; a ts fence links nothing; nothing links without an opener; tool-output text is unchanged; over 256K stays plain.
    • server/file-view.test.ts: render=1 is honoured only for HTML and not for downloads; the policy has sandbox allow-scripts without allow-same-origin, no connect-src, and 'self' only in frame-ancestors.
  • New browser steps in scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts (Codex transcript, 390px touch):
    • tap a path in a tool's output and the picture opens;
    • tap the HTML path in the command and the page's script runs, while inside the frame fetch("/api/health") is blocked and localStorage is unavailable;
    • Source shows the markup, and the new-tab link then opens the source;
    • a path in a plain code block opens, and the block's innerText is unchanged.
    • The script's addInitScript now runs only in the top frame, because it read localStorage inside the sandboxed page.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Maintainer changes (on top of the original work)

  • Merged main up to v0.4.8 (two rounds of conflicts in ChatView.tsx, Markdown.tsx, FileViewer.tsx/.css and file-viewer-regression.ts; the HTML page flag is htmlPage now, beside main's new page prop for a markdown file's own tab). The changelog entry moved to Unreleased.
  • A page's own files are put into it (pageWithLocalFiles in server/file-view.ts, via Bun's HTMLRewriter): pictures, video and audio as data: URLs, .js and .css inline, so an agent's report with its screenshots draws whole while the sandbox still asks this server for nothing (a paired phone could not anyway: the device cookie is SameSite=Strict and the page has no origin). Only files in the page's folder or below, symlinks resolved, never under a hidden name (.ssh/, .env), each element taking only its own kind of file (8 MB a file, 32 MB a page). The page's script can send what it holds to any https URL, which is why a key named as a picture's source is never put in.
  • Review fixes (Codex gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): a decoded root, drive or UNC share (%5C%5Chost%5Cshare) is refused before anything is resolved, so a Windows PC never reaches out to a share; and /api/fs/* (local and through a PC) refuses another site's page loading a file as a subresource (Sec-Fetch-Site not same-origin and not a navigation), so a rendered page cannot probe which files exist through img-src https:. Navigations (a new tab, a download, Android's PDF "Open") and browsers without Fetch Metadata pass as before.
  • Turkish strings for "Show the HTML file as", "Page", "Source".
  • Tests: server/file-view.test.ts (embedding, outside/symlink/hidden/kind/UNC refusals, the cross-site check), server/machine-proxy.test.ts (a cross-site navigation still opens a PC's file; a cross-site picture load gets 403), and file-viewer-regression.ts checks that a picture beside the page draws inside it.
  • Verified on this head: bun run typecheck, bun run test:unit (2778 pass, 0 fail), bun run check run --build bun scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts (all PASS). Desktop and phone screenshots were reviewed by the owner.
  • Second review (Codex gpt-6-astra, medium; 7a92965): the rendered page reaches nothing on the web (PAGE_POLICY without https:; a report brings its library beside it, and that is put in); its scripts and stylesheets are embedded as data: URLs so defer, type="module" and media keep their meaning, and a non-running script (type="text/plain") takes no file; a page's URLs are resolved once each and at most a thousand; a code block's links are measured by the whole block and capped at 500 paths; the fence's tag decides whether paths link (rust does not, log/text/console do).

A tool call's command and output, and a code block with no language, were
plain text: a log line like `/tmp/shot/t0.png (1600, 1000) -> (1255, 960)`
could not be opened, though the same path in prose could. They now link
paths with the chat's matcher (lib/filePaths.ts), so the file opens in the
viewer from any device, the server reading it. Text over 256K stays plain.

An HTML file opens as its page (`/api/fs/file?render=1`), with a switch to
its source. The page's script runs under `sandbox allow-scripts` without
`allow-same-origin` and with no connect-src, so it has no origin, cookie,
storage or network; without `render` the file is still sent as plain text.
A remote PC whose bridge predates `render` shows the source in the frame.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to def25

This change adds clickable file paths in chat output and a sandboxed HTML page viewer. The earlier review concerns appear to have been fixed, and no actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied context.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a68dd

Opening HTML now runs its scripts and permits external HTTPS resources. The sandbox protects the application's origin, but it does not prevent disclosure of data contained in the opened document. HTTPS deployments with cookie-independent access also require care because the resource policy does not actually exclude the application's own server.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new Page mode executes HTML while permitting arbitrary HTTPS scripts, images, styles, fonts, and media. Attacker-authored markup or a loaded third-party script can disclose data contained in the rendered document through resource URLs. Blocking fetch, sockets, and beacons does not establish a no-egress boundary. This exposure is introduced by the change from plain-text HTML viewing.
  • Low · security · inferred: The policy's HTTPS image and media allowances include an HTTPS application server despite the stated intent to exclude it. Where access is granted without browser cookies, such as an approved Tailscale identity or open-access configuration, rendered scripts can request known local or registered remote image/media paths and observe loading outcomes. This conditionally expands disclosure beyond the opened document. Strict cookies constrain cookie-only deployments; actual deployment reachability was not established.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established disclosure scope is data already present in an opened HTML document, including data readable by an admitted third-party script. This is browser-side exposure, not demonstrated server execution or arbitrary filesystem-content access. On HTTPS installations with cookie-independent authority, observable image/media loading can additionally reveal information about known paths on local or registered remote machines.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings share an attack mechanism: attacker-influenced HTML reaches Page mode, scripts or markup create permitted HTTPS resource requests, and document data can leave in those request URLs. The user must open the file through an allowed access path; path matching alone is not execution. The execution and external-resource exposure are new relative to the base's plain-text HTML response.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Access checks precede local file handling and remote proxy dispatch, and watch-role devices are denied file reads. Token/device cookies are HttpOnly and SameSite=Strict. The proxy translates approved access to a registered bridge bearer rather than passing browser credentials. These are substantial countercontrols, but cookie-independent access grants remain supported.
  • inferred — The opaque-origin sandbox prevents direct application DOM, cookie, and storage access. It does not stop a script from reading its own rendered document or issuing allowed subresource requests. Likewise, an HTTPS scheme allowance does not distinguish an external CDN from the application when both use HTTPS.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The rendering test checks sandboxing, blocked default connections, and the absence of 'self' outside frame-ancestors, but its “no network” assertion does not test HTTPS resource egress or same-server HTTPS loading. Protocol and viewer documentation repeat that stronger guarantee, creating a security-control drift risk.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate offline, untrusted HTML viewing from explicitly network-enabled viewing. An offline policy should remove HTTPS resource allowances and supply required libraries locally within the isolated document. If network-enabled rendering remains, communicate that document data can leave, default untrusted HTML to Source mode, and enforce file-read restrictions independently of resource-policy host assumptions.

Thanks for this, @MovieHolic-Plex: the output links and the sandboxed page are both in. I merged main up to v0.4.8 and pushed a few changes on top (details in the description): a page's own pictures, stylesheet and script are now put into it so a report with local screenshots draws, with refusals for anything outside its folder, hidden names and the wrong kind of file, plus two review fixes (UNC paths on Windows, and refusing another page loading /api/fs files as subresources). It goes to the merge round next.

…iles keep their elements

Review findings (Codex, CodeRabbit) on the HTML page and the path links:

- PAGE_POLICY no longer allows https: for scripts, styles, pictures,
  media or fonts: the page holds its own folder's files, and a script
  that could reach any https URL could send them there (an image URL
  is enough). A report brings its library beside it instead, and that
  is put into the page.
- Scripts and stylesheets a page takes from its folder become data:
  URLs on the element, like pictures, so `defer`, `async`,
  `type="module"` and a stylesheet's `media` keep their meaning; a
  script that does not run (`type="text/plain"`) takes no file.
- A page's URLs are resolved once each, and at most a thousand: a page
  naming a missing picture thousands of times cost a filesystem lookup
  per mention.
- A code block's path links are measured by the whole block, not token
  by token, and a text with more than 500 paths links none.
- A fence's tag decides whether its paths link: a language with no
  grammar here (rust) is still a language; `text`, `log`, `console`
  and the like are output.

Second maintainer review (Codex gpt-6-astra, medium, plus CodeRabbit's three threads), fixed in 7a92965:

  • The rendered page reaches nothing on the web. PAGE_POLICY drops https: for scripts, styles, pictures, media and fonts. The page holds its own folder's files, and a script that could reach any https URL could send them there; an image URL alone was enough, so narrowing to scripts would not have closed it. A report brings its chart library beside it instead, and that is put into the page.
  • Scripts and stylesheets keep their elements. They are embedded as data: URLs like pictures, so defer, async, type="module" and a stylesheet's media keep their meaning (inlining had made a deferred script run before its canvas existed and a print stylesheet apply on screen). A script that does not run (type="text/plain") takes no file, so a neighbouring script cannot read config.js through it.
  • Bounded rewriting. A page's URLs are resolved once each and at most a thousand; a page naming a missing picture 200,000 times cost a filesystem lookup per mention (about a second on the request path).
  • Bounded links. A code block's path links are measured by the whole block, not token by token (a 330 K block of short lines made 30,000 buttons), and a text with more than 500 paths links none.
  • The fence's tag decides. A language with no grammar here (rust) is still a language and links nothing; empty, text, log, console and the like are output and do.

Tests: server/file-view.test.ts (policy without the web, data: embedding with attributes kept, the data-block script, the resolution cap and timing), src/lib/markdown.test.ts (rust vs log fences, the count limit, the dense block). Locally: check fast, file-viewer-regression (28 PASS). CI runs on the fork head need approval, done below.

## Change

Machines saved in herdr appear in the web UI without entering their SSH details again. Discovery does not open SSH: each machine first offers **Connect**. A successful connection enables reconnection for that destination, explicit port and herdr session. Installing, starting or updating a bridge requires separate approval; connecting to an already running bridge does not grant that permission.

The roster follows renames, enabled state, removal and target changes. Retargeting revokes both approvals, drops cached panes and removes the generated local SSH key. A cleanup failure remains retryable across restart and does not prevent other machines from being disabled, retargeted or removed, or slow subsequent catalog polling. A cancelled key-generation job cannot publish credentials after retarget/removal.

SSH masters and command clients suppress configured forwards. The bridge's explicit mux forward uses its existing control socket with `-F none`, so it keeps its own loopback tunnel without importing LocalForward, RemoteForward or DynamicForward entries. This is covered with real OpenSSH, including an SSH alias.

Manual registrations retain their existing behavior. The CLI catalog stays authoritative; web-owned connection/install permissions and cached panes live separately. Existing HTTP/SSE contracts gain optional `herdr_profile_id` and the `connect` action; no endpoint is added. Rename, disable and remove inherited PCs in herdr.

Review entry points: `server/herdr-profiles.ts`, `server/herdr-profile-state.ts`, `MachineManager.syncHerdrProfiles` and `watchHerdrProfiles` in `server/machines.ts`, and `server/ssh.ts`.

## Validation

- Revision `6552d6d`: Fast checks passed (workflow syntax, generated types, TypeScript, build, **2,483 unit tests passed**, eight skipped). The **entire browser lane passed**, all 26 steps, including the profile desktop/phone regression. The source and built artifact were unchanged through the run.
- Integration: **392 tests passed, zero failed, across 34 files**. `CHECK_DIR=/tmp/h606-clean-shell SHELL=/tmp/herdr-606-bash HERDR_WEB_HERDR_BIN=/tmp/herdr-review-bin/herdr bun run check integration` passed on an isolated copy of the same `main` commit, with its own build output. The report verifies unchanged source and exit 0. The disposable shell wrapper runs `/bin/bash --noprofile --norc`.
- Final profile-sync regression run: 21 passed, including repeated cleanup failure across polls, direct update before Connect, preserved connection errors and late key generation.
- Desktop/phone profile browser regression passed after the final UI changes; screenshots below use an isolated test session. The check runs in the standard browser lane.
- Real Docker SSH lifecycle passed again on `6552d6d` against the official remote-v25 Linux x64 bundle, verified against SHA-256 `c770267f98bfff27669bbbc9a65c1ce56c4f772ef9eda628bbb65eba4d686a94`. Covers real CLI catalog parsing, SSH alias/config forwards, explicit first connection, fingerprint/password/install approval, dedicated-key authentication, terminal input/resize, manager/bridge restart, connection-only consent, disable/re-enable, named-session retarget and removal. Only disposable container state was changed.
- Opus independently reviewed a self-contained source bundle. Its polling-backoff, direct-update and error-preservation findings are addressed with regression tests.
- `git diff origin/main...HEAD --check` passed.

The initial full run had one existing terminal assertion fail and stopped the browser lane at `Cannot fast-forward to the past`. The final full run's browser lane passed; its integration lane repeated the terminal failure. This laptop's `.bashrc` replaces interactive Bash with zsh, whose cursor-positioned updates do not contain the assertion's contiguous `size=27x91`. A disposable Bash wrapper using `--noprofile --norc` resolves it: all 108 API tests and all 392 integration tests pass without changing the assertion or product code. These initial failures remain disclosed rather than counted as successful full runs.

Upstream CI and Remote PC bundles runs on this head currently require maintainer approval. Approval is requested in the PR discussion. CodeRabbit completed a fresh full review of `6552d6d` with **no actionable comments**, no retained architecture concerns, and zero unresolved review threads. Its generic docstring-coverage warning is advisory; the repository does not require an 80% threshold. The initial review attempt was skipped because GitHub retained the old base SHA; refreshing the existing `main` base corrected the comparison to 28 changed files.

### Screenshots

The fixture uses a closed loopback SSH port and a synthetic installation-approval response; real SSH is exercised separately in Docker.

### Compatibility and rollback

Old/missing catalog commands leave manual setup available, and read failures retain the last roster. Remote bridge instances do not discover another catalog. Reverting removes inherited rows without stopping remote herdr sessions or modifying manual registrations. Remote authorized-key entries remain for explicit cleanup.

Maintainer commits (merge session, 2026-10-12): main merged through v0.4.8, #854, #850 and #691; bfe9d09 lets an inherited PC connect whatever its catalog label's length (the catalog names it, the dialog sends no name); the browser lane count is 40.
