Change

The model pill in the chat's input card ("Opus 5.5 · Medium") shows the model and effort level, but nothing in it can be pressed. On a phone the only way to change either was to type /model or /effort.

The pill's label is now a button that opens a menu: a popover on a desktop and a bottom sheet on a phone, both through the existing RowMenu.

Agent Menu Sends
Claude Code Model, Effort /model, /effort
Codex Model and effort /model (its list picks the level too)
pi Model /model
others (omo, opencode, …) none: the label stays a plain label —

Where the agent has pickers, the label is there even before the conversation names a model. Claude Code records none until its first answer, and that is when a model is usually picked. Until then the label reads Model.

  • Each item sends the agent's own picker command through the composer's quick-reply path (sendQuick), so it follows the same delivery policy as Send and leaves the message box alone. The chat already draws those pickers as cards (claude-model, claude-effort, codex-model and pi-model in server/prompt.ts), and the pick is made there.
  • The menu does not list models itself. The list differs per session, and src/AGENTS.md rules out guessed model names. An agent whose picker the chat cannot read gets no menu, so it never leads somewhere only the terminal can finish.
  • modelPickers(agent) in src/lib/compose.ts holds the mapping.
  • .composer-model-info is a <button aria-haspopup="menu"> wherever pickers exist, a model named or not, and the pill keeps its box around it (.is-bare only for a pane with neither). It now has a box of its own (it was display: contents) so it can be pressed and draw the focus ring, and it still gives way first when the row is tight. Hovering it outlines the pill.
  • ko/ja/zh entries, a CHANGELOG line (Unreleased → Added) and a note in the Chat composer row of src/AGENTS.md.

Claude's effort slider in a narrow pane, and on max

Effort sends /effort, and the card exists only if parseClaudeEffort reads Claude's slider. Before this PR it did not read it:

  • in a pane under about 70 columns (a herdr split, or a pane a phone's terminal view has sized, which the chat view keeps), where Claude stacks the Ultracode toggle under the levels and wraps the key hint;
  • under about 50 columns, where Claude also breaks each level's name inside its column (mediu over m) and breaks the rule onto a line of its own;
  • at any width with the slider on max, where Claude prints a warning under the levels.

In those panes Effort (and a typed /effort) opened a slider that only the terminal could answer. The reader now takes these layouts. It still moves with ←/→ and picks with s (never Enter), and it still refuses a slider whose ▲ Claude lost in that break. That happened once, at 42 columns on medium. A CHANGELOG Fixed line and a note in server/AGENTS.md cover it.

Validation

  • Real Claude Code 2.1.285 in a throwaway herdr session (temp config dirs): /effort captured at 36, 42, 45, 48, 53, 70, 92 and 120 columns on each of the five levels. Before: only 70+ columns on low to xhigh were read. After: 39 of 40 are read with the right level; the 40th is the frame with no ▲. Real sliders answered through handlePromptRequest at 53 columns (to high) and 45 columns (to low, and to max with the warning on screen) each ended in "Set effort level to … (this session only)".
  • server/prompt.test.ts: those captures as fixtures, the ▲-less frame (no card, and the slider still holds the screen), and a ▲ on a broken-off rule.
  • scripts/composer-fit-demo-regression.ts has a new case at 390 and 1440px for a Claude pane whose conversation names no model: the pill is drawn whole, reads Model, and opens Model and Effort.
  • The branch merges upstream/main (feat(telemetry): keep the country an event came from #663, fix(prompt): a Claude approval is a card while background agents run #659, fix(settings): keep slow history traversal ownership #630) to settle the CHANGELOG; fix(prompt): a Claude approval is a card while background agents run #659 also edits server/prompt.ts, which merged cleanly, and the tests and capture checks above were rerun on the merge. scripts/ci-browser.test.ts passes.
  • For this update, on a Mac: the prompt, compose, i18n and motion unit tests pass (265), bun run typecheck is clean and bun run build passes. The fork copy of this fix is fix(composer): the model pill opens its pickers before a model is named, and Claude's effort slider is read in narrow panes jiunshinn/herdr-web-ui#12.
  • src/lib/compose.test.ts covers modelPickers: the commands per agent, and none for omo, opencode or no agent.
  • scripts/composer-fit-demo-regression.ts: 8/8 pass. It checks the pill's layout across widths, agents and states, which matters now that the label has a box.
  • A Playwright check against the demo build, run by hand and not added to the repo:
    • At 390×844 with touch, a tap opens the sheet with Model (Opus 5.5) and Effort (medium), and Effort sends /effort.
    • At 1200px the popover opens, Escape closes it and returns focus to the pill, and Model sends /model while a typed draft stays in the box.
    • Codex shows a single "Model and effort" item, and omo shows no button.
  • Passed locally on this branch (based on main at 0.4.3): bun run generate:types --check, bun run build, i18n.test.ts and motion.test.ts.
  • bun run test:unit has 25 local failures (install-star, herdr-marker, machine-proxy, voice). They fail the same way on main on this PC.
  • bun run typecheck locally reports only the two PlatformPath errors that main also has here.
  • The same change passed Fast checks, Integration and browser, and Native Windows install on my fork (feat(composer): a tap on the model pill opens the agent's model and effort pickers jiunshinn/herdr-web-ui#10).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…ffort pickers

The pill in the chat's input card showed the model and level but had
nothing to press. Its label now opens a menu (a popover, a bottom sheet
on a phone) whose items send the agent's own picker command, which the
chat already draws as a card: /model and /effort for Claude Code,
/model for Codex (model and level together) and for pi. Agents whose
picker the chat cannot read keep the plain label.

Allow supported-agent pickers before metadata arrives.

Composer can be usable while metadata is still null. In that state, modelShown is false, so the outer guard hides the picker button even when modelPickers(agent) returns pickers for Claude, Codex, or pi. modelInfo already provides the Model — fallback label.

Send picker commands immediately while the agent is working.

sendQuick routes picker commands through onSend, and composerDelivery selects queue delivery for a working agent. This can leave /model or /effort pending instead of opening the picker immediately. Route picker commands through a dedicated immediate-delivery path, or disable the picker menu while the agent is working. Keep normal message delivery queued.

…ed, and Claude's effort slider is read in narrow panes

The pill drew its button only once the conversation named a model, and
Claude Code writes none until its first answer: a new session, or one
just cleared, had nothing to press. The label is now there whenever the
agent has pickers, reading Model until a model is named.

Claude's /effort slider (the pill's Effort item) showed no card in a
pane under about 70 columns, such as a herdr split or a pane the phone's
terminal view sized, nor anywhere on max. Claude stacks the Ultracode
toggle under the levels there, breaks a level's name inside its column
under about 50 columns, and puts a warning under the levels on max. The
reader takes all of these (checked against Claude Code 2.1.285 at 36 to
120 columns), still never presses Enter, and still refuses a slider
whose ▲ the break lost.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Disable the picker while an interactive prompt is open.

The picker button remains enabled while answering is active. Selecting /model or /effort then routes the command through answerFromText instead of opening the agent picker. A custom-answer prompt submits it as custom_text; an option-only prompt rejects it.

Use the existing answerHint prompt-state signal to hide the picker:

Suggested fix
-  const pickable = pickers.length > 0;
+  const pickable = pickers.length > 0 && answerHint === null;

Fixing queued delivery for working turns does not affect this earlier prompt-answer branch.

The requested model and effort picker is already covered by PR #681. Please consider this request as support for that PR rather than a new duplicate. The picker must keep the model list limited to models that herdr, the configured provider, or the local proxy reports as available.
