Change

Sending /model from a Codex chat opened a terminal menu with no corresponding chat card. This adds cards for the model list and its reasoning levels using the existing prompt API and client. It builds on #501, now merged into main.

  • A pick uses s for the current session. Enter is permitted only in the model list to open a model's levels, and the key is read from the selected row's footer immediately before it is sent.
  • Reasoning lists never receive Enter. Open “More reasoning…” in the terminal; once open, Max and Ultra can be selected for the session through their card. Quick presets remain in the terminal.
  • Each move after the first waits for the preceding move to appear. The final check compares the list, row number, name and description; an unknown footer or changed selection returns 409 without guessing a key.
  • The fallback-card guard applies only to Codex panes. A generic list footer requires a model header immediately above numbered rows, with no intervening question after those rows. Recognized key spellings prevent ordinary text from being mistaken for a long key name when wrapped lines are joined. Historical headings and unrelated prompts retain their fallback cards; session/default footers split across narrow lines still suppress an unsafe Enter fallback.
  • Shared numbered-row parsing preserves Claude's model cards. After answering either agent's model list, the route waits briefly for the next list or closed menu so the answered card does not immediately reappear.

Validation

  • Bun 1.4.2 on macOS: typecheck and production build passed. Local full unit suite: 1447 passed, 15 skipped, 0 failed.
  • Isolated herdr 0.9.3 prompt contracts: 13 passed. Codex's model selection opens the requested model's levels, then logs a session-only pick with no default-setting action.
  • Real React client and HTTP server at 1280 and 390 CSS pixels, using scripted menus in an isolated test session: Claude selects Haiku for the session; Codex opens GPT-6-Luna's levels and selects High for the session. Cards close after selection, with no browser errors or stray-input/default-setting log entries. These checks make no model requests and modify no user agent configuration.
  • The final key-hint additions also passed the focused guard/header regressions (3 tests, 32 assertions) and typecheck.
  • The new route regression failed before the fallback-guard fix. It covers historical headings across Claude, pi, omp and Codex, another agent showing a Codex-shaped footer, newer picker titles, a narrow footer with its title clipped away, remapped/unreadable key hints, and a new question printed after an old model menu.
  • Key semantics checked against Codex's official model picker and session selection source.

…ks for this session only

Sending /model from the chat opened Claude Code's model list in the pane and
left the chat with nothing to show for it: no reader knew the screen, and
herdr does not report the pane blocked while the list waits, so not even the
fallback card came up. The model could only be picked in the terminal.

A reader for the list (responder claude-model), anchored on its hint line
"Enter to set as default · s to use this session only · Esc to cancel":

- The rows drawn become the card's options, read by shape (number, name,
the tick on the model in use, what the row says of it). Claude Code draws
a window on the list (ten rows of twelve, five in a 24-line pane) and two
different lists from one session to the next; the rows it holds back are
counted in the card's question, not offered.
- A pick moves the cursor and types s, the list's key for this session
only. The card never sends the list's Enter, which saves the pick as the
  default for every new session.
- The list is read again before the s, also when no move was needed, and
the s goes only while the same model (number and name) is under the
cursor: a letter typed after the list has closed would stand in Claude's
  own prompt.

Checked against Claude Code 2.1.290 in an isolated herdr session: the card
and a pick at 120 columns and at 46 by 24, through the HTTP route and
through the built client in Chrome at 1280 and 390 px wide. Claude answered
"Set model to … for this session only" and ~/.claude/settings.json kept its
model, effort and modification time.

… wait for the list

From a Codex adversarial pass on #501. Each case below has a test that fails
when its line is reverted.

- A list the reader cannot take (a name the pane cut in two) fell through to
the fallback card whenever herdr reported the pane blocked, a status that
can be left over from an approval. That card offers Enter, and Enter on
this list saves the row under the cursor as the default for every new
session. A screen that ends in the list's hint now gets no fallback card:
it is left to the terminal.
- The moves of a pick went out without a look at the screen, so an Esc in
the terminal after the first arrow sent the remaining ones into Claude's
own prompt, where they walk its history. Each move after the first now
waits for the list to show the one before it.
- The row under the cursor was compared by its number and name. A list by
family names the model itself only in what the row says, so that is part
  of the comparison too.
- `↑` is the window's first row and `↓` its last: a numbered line right
above or under them is none of the list's.
- A wrapped line that fills its column was joined to the next without a
space, on the guess that a word was cut there. A whole word that fills
the column reads the same, so every wrapped line is joined with a space
now and a cut word stays cut, as the pane shows it.
- The contract fixture logs any key that reaches it after the list closed.

Not changed: the letter can still land in Claude's prompt when the list
closes between the last read and the key (two separate herdr calls, the
limit issue #469 records for every card), and text printed to the very end
of a Claude pane's screen in the list's shape is taken for the list, as it
is for every reader here.

… in the open

CodeRabbit read the counter as firing on the answer's own read of the card,
which would have made the case pass without the look before the `s`. It did
not: the callback was set after the card's read, so the third read was the
look. The counter now starts before the card is read and the case asserts
the count, and it fails (200, `s` sent) when `claude-model` is taken out of
the responders that look again before their first key.

…r this session only

Sending /model from a Codex pane's chat opened Codex's model list in the pane
and left the chat with nothing to show for it, as it did for Claude Code
before the reader for its list. Codex's is a chain of lists: the models, the
reasoning levels of the model picked, and the advanced levels behind "More
reasoning…".

A reader for them (responder codex-model), built on the one for Claude Code's
list (its row reading is shared now, `listRows`):

- A list is known by its title ("Select Model and Effort", "Select Model",
"Select Reasoning Level for <model>", "Advanced Reasoning"), since
`enter select · esc back` is the footer of every list Codex draws.
- The footer belongs to the row under the cursor. Under `enter select`
Enter only opens the next list; under `enter default · s session`
(`enter apply` on Ultra) the row picks, `s` for this session and Enter to
save the pick as the default. A model with a single reasoning level picks
from the first list. So an answer ends in a `pick` step: the key is the
one the footer names once the moves have put the cursor on the row
(`rowKey`, read off the screen at that moment), and never Enter under a
  footer that offers `s`.
- As for Claude's list: the row is compared by its list, number, name and
description before the key, each move after the first waits for the list
to show the one before it, and a list whose row picks gets no fallback
card when the reader cannot take it.
- An answered list (Codex's or Claude's) is waited on until the pane shows
what follows, the next list or none, as an answered form of several
questions already was: the card read right after the answer no longer
  shows the list just answered.

Read in Codex's source at rust-v0.160.0 (tui/src/chatwidget/model_popups.rs,
session_model_selection.rs) and checked on Codex 0.160.1 in an isolated
herdr session through this branch's server: a model and a level at 120
columns, and all three lists at 46 by 24. Codex answered "Model changed to
… for this session only" and ~/.codex/config.toml kept its hash.

…nd guarded by title too

From a Codex adversarial pass on the Codex list reader. Each case below has a
test that fails when its line is reverted.

- A model list's title further up could claim another list's rows: the
title was looked for in the eight lines above them. It is looked for in
the block of lines right above the rows now, so another list's header in
  between is another list.
- The levels' title wraps in a pane too narrow for it ("Select Reasoning
Level for" / the model's name) and the card was lost. The two lines are
  read as one.
- A footer cut beyond reading (a pane a few columns wide) escaped the guard
that keeps the fallback card, and its Enter, off these lists. The guard
also knows a list by its title near the end of the screen.
- The wait after an answered list compared the pane with the card as first
read. A list drawn as another window by the time of the key (a pane made
shorter) is another text, so the wait ended at once and the card came up
again. It starts from the list as the answer last saw it.
- Two spaces inside a name were read as the start of what the row says.
What the rows say stands in one column for the whole list: a gap at
another column, or in one row alone, stays in the name. Both readers
  share this now (`listRow`, `listNames`).

Not changed, and stated in the reader's comment: the look before a key and
the key are two herdr calls, so a key pressed in the terminal between them
can move the cursor under an Enter meant for a row that opens a list (the
gap issue #469 records for every card); and the advanced list does not name
its model, so two models' advanced lists read the same.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Codex model and reasoning-level choices now appear as selectable cards in chat.
    • Model and reasoning selections apply to the current pane. To save a default, use the terminal; advanced options such as Max and Ultra are available there under “More reasoning…”.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the supported-agents guide with details about Codex model choices in prompts.

Walkthrough

Codex /model menus now appear as chat cards for model and reasoning-level selection. The parser reads menu rows and footer actions. Answer handling checks the current list and row before sending the key. Tests and documentation cover session selections and terminal-only default saving.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse model and reasoning lists
server/prompt.ts, server/prompt.test.ts
The parser recognizes Codex model, reasoning-level, and advanced-reasoning lists. It reads rows, cursor position, descriptions, current selections, and footer actions. Shared row parsing also supports Claude model lists. Tests cover parsing, navigation, and unsupported or incomplete menus.
Navigate and answer model lists
server/prompt.ts, server/prompt.test.ts, server/prompt.contract.test.ts, server/AGENTS.md, docs/guide.md, CHANGELOG.md
Answer handling verifies list identity and row visibility, then resolves the selection key from the latest screen. It waits for the list to move on and suppresses fallback cards for unreadable Codex lists. Tests cover session selection and changed or delayed menus. Documentation describes the supported prompts and selection behavior.

Codex model and reasoning-level lists now appear as chat cards with session-only picks. One narrow gap remains: a pane waiting on an unrecognized prompt may show no chat card if a recent line looks like a Codex list title. The user would then need to answer in the terminal. This is mergeable with a small follow-up fix.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 59e5c

Normal selections remain session-scoped and use existing access controls. Concurrent terminal input can nevertheless change the screen between validation and selection, potentially turning a navigation action into a persistent settings change.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new chat flow can issue Enter to open a model’s reasoning list after separately validating the screen. Concurrent terminal input can open that list first, causing the pending Enter to save a default instead. Re-reading and pane serialization mitigate this, but raw input and independent terminal writers are not excluded by the answer transaction. The possible outcome extends beyond the requested session into later sessions; this does not establish additional attacker privileges.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The answer directly targets one requested pane. Normal picks affect that session; the retained concurrency concern could affect future sessions through an unintended default change. The access policy is installation-wide terminal authority, not a newly introduced tenant or pane-ownership boundary.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained concern requires another writer able to advance the same terminal during the read/send gap. Such a writer already has arbitrary key-input authority, including direct default-setting capability. The PR introduces an unintended persistence path for an otherwise session-scoped action, rather than a demonstrated authentication bypass or privilege gain.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The outer server applies its existing access policy, mutation-origin check, and read-only-device restriction before dispatching answers. Within that boundary, the handler validates card identity and choice before sending keys. These controls predate the new menu responder.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Card identities include an asking generation and server-run identity. Ended askings prevent continued answers, request cancellation is checked before selection, and bounded row polling refuses mismatched screens. These controls contain stale requests without making terminal read-and-write operations atomic.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider conditional key delivery tied to an authoritative menu generation, or coordinated exclusive input ownership across terminal writers during selection. This would strengthen session-only containment beyond a separate screen read and subsequent key send.

Codex adversarial pass (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) on a4607a4, and what f7a3782 does about each finding. Every fix has a test that fails when its line is reverted.

# Severity Finding Outcome
1 High The look before the key and the key are two calls: a key pressed in the terminal between them can move the cursor from "More reasoning…" (Enter opens a list) to "Extra high" (Enter saves a default). Not changed, and stated: this is the read-to-key gap #469 records for every card, a few milliseconds between two local socket calls. The reader's comment and the PR's limits no longer say "never" without it. If that residue is not acceptable, the cut is to leave rows that open a list next to rows that pick ("More reasoning…") to the terminal.
2 High A footer fragmented mid-word (a pane a few columns wide) escaped the guard that keeps the fallback card's Enter off these lists. Fixed. The guard also knows a list by its title near the end of the screen.
3 Medium The advanced lists of two models read the same, so one in the other's place passes the row check. Not changed. The list does not name its model; the pick there is s, for the session, and Codex prints which model it changed. Stated in the limits.
4 Medium A model list's title further up claimed another list's rows. Fixed. The title is looked for in the block of lines right above the rows.
5 Medium The levels' title wrapped over two lines lost the card. Fixed. The wrapped title is read as one.
6 Medium The wait after an answered list compared the pane with the card as first read, so a list drawn as another window by then ended the wait at once. Fixed. The wait starts from the list as the answer last saw it.
7 Low Two spaces inside a name were read as the start of the row's description. Fixed for both readers: descriptions stand in one column for the whole list.

Re-checked on f7a3782: typecheck, 1454 unit tests, the 13 live prompt contract tests (bash panes, see #502), real Codex 0.160.1 (a model and a level at 120 columns; all three lists at 46 by 24) and real Claude Code 2.1.290 through the same server.

…rminal, and sends no Enter there

The maintainer's decision on the one finding the adversarial pass left open:
a pick made in the chat must not change the default for new sessions.

In a list of levels "More reasoning…" takes Enter, and the rows beside it
save a default on Enter. The look before a key and the key are two herdr
calls, so a key pressed in the terminal between them could put an Enter
meant for that row on a level. The row is no longer offered: the card says
"More levels are listed in the terminal." and Max and Ultra are picked
there. With the cursor on that row in the terminal the card still reads,
and its moves count from there.

Enter is now sent in one list only, the list of models ("Select Model and
Effort"), where a row opens that model's levels. In a list of levels, or
the advanced one, a row whose footer names Enter alone is not offered and
not answered (409). The list of quick presets ("Select Model"), which mixes
rows that pick with rows that open a list and was never available to look
at, gets no card and no fallback card.

Left as it was, and said in the reader's comment: the same gap in the list
of models, where it matters only beside a model with a single level.

Follow-up on finding 1 of the table above (the look and the key being two calls, so an Enter meant for "More reasoning…" could land on a level's row and save a default): the maintainer chose to leave that row to the terminal. In 9575b09 the levels card does not offer "More reasoning…", no row of a levels or advanced list is answered with Enter, and Enter is sent in the list of models only. The quick-presets list ("Select Model") gets no card. Re-checked: typecheck, 1454 unit tests, the 13 live prompt contract tests, and real Codex 0.160.1 at 46 by 24 (models, then levels without that row, Model changed to gpt-6-astra xhigh for this session only, config.toml hash unchanged).

…ks for this session only (#501)

## Change

`/model` is in a Claude Code pane's slash list, but sending it from the
chat was a dead end: Claude Code opens its model list in the pane, no
reader knew that screen, and herdr does not report the pane blocked
while the list waits (it reads idle), so not even the fallback card
appeared. The chat showed nothing and the model had to be picked in the
terminal.

This adds a reader for that list (`claude-model` in `server/prompt.ts`),
so the existing prompt card shows it above the input card. Nothing
changes on the client or on the wire.

- **What becomes a card.** The list is recognised by its hint line,
`Enter to set as default · s to use this session only · Esc to cancel`,
with numbered rows and exactly one cursor right above it. The title is
not required: a pane shorter than the list scrolls it off the top.
- **Rows are read by shape.** Number, name, `✔` on the model in use, and
the description after two or more spaces, joined back when a narrow pane
wraps it under itself. Claude Code drew two different lists in sessions
minutes apart (twelve models by name, five by family), so nothing about
the content is assumed.
- **Only the rows on screen are offered.** Claude Code draws a window on
the list (ten rows of twelve, five in a 24-line pane) with `↑` / `↓` in
the cursor's column and `… +2 models` under it. The card's question
counts the rest: "2 more models are listed in the terminal."
- **A pick is for this session only.** The answer moves the cursor and
types `s`. It never sends the list's Enter, which saves the pick as the
default for every new session; that stays a terminal-only act.
- **The list is read again before the `s`,** also when the pick needs no
move, and the letter goes only while the same row (its number in the
list, its name and what the row says) is under the cursor. A letter
typed after the list has closed would land in Claude's own prompt.
- **Each move after the first waits for the list to show the one before
it.** An Esc in the terminal mid-pick then costs one arrow in Claude's
prompt, not the rest of them.
- **No fallback card over this list.** A list the reader cannot take is
left to the terminal even when herdr reports the pane blocked: the
fallback card offers Enter.
- **Typed answers.** The card is a `question`, like pi's model card, so
a number typed in the composer picks that row at once.

Decisions by the maintainer on 2026-10-06: `s` rather than Enter, shown
rows only, Claude Code first and Codex's two-step list in a PR of its
own. The composer's model pill stays display only.

Known limits:

- The effort line under the rows is not read. Claude Code keeps a
session's own effort across the pick (measured: a session at xhigh
stayed at xhigh after switching to Sonnet 5.5); a session with none runs
the picked model at that model's default, as it does for a pick made in
the terminal without ←/→.
- The pill's model name still updates with Claude's next answer, since
it is read from assistant entries of the transcript.
- A row whose name the pane cuts in two is left to the terminal, and the
rows under it are still offered. If it is the last row, no card is
shown.
- A description word longer than its column shows cut, as the pane draws
it (`longest-runni ng` at 46 columns): a line that fills its column says
nothing of whether a space was there.
- The list closing between the last read and the `s` still lets the
letter into Claude's prompt (two separate herdr calls; the limit #469
records for every card). Text printed to the very end of a Claude pane's
screen in the list's exact shape is taken for the list, as with every
reader here.
- Codex's and omp's `/model` screens still have no card.

## Validation

- `bun run typecheck`, `bun run build`, `bun run test:unit` on the head:
1434 passed, 4 skipped, 0 failed.
- `server/prompt.test.ts`: fixtures are Claude Code 2.1.290's own
screens captured at 120 columns, 46 by 40 and 46 by 24, plus the
five-row list another session drew. Route cases: a move to the last row
drawn (where `❯` replaces `↓` and the effort line changes), the cursor's
own row, a pane made shorter under the moves, the list closed right
after the read, the list closed under the first move (one arrow sent,
not two), a cursor that drifted one row, another model behind the same
number and name, and an unreadable list under a `blocked` status (no
card). Each guard was reverted in turn to see its case fail: Enter
instead of `s`, no look before the `s`, whole-card matching, no per-move
wait, the row compared without what it says, no fallback guard, no `↑` /
`↓` bounds.
- `server/prompt.contract.test.ts` on an isolated herdr 0.9.3 session: a
pane drawing the list the way Claude Code does, reported `idle`, gets
its card; answering the window's last row logs `session: Haiku 4.5` and
never a `default:` line; the card goes when the list closes. 12 passed,
0 failed.
- Real Claude Code 2.1.290 in an isolated herdr session, through this
branch's server: the card and a pick at 120 columns (also eight rows
down, to the last row drawn) and at 46 by 24 over HTTP, and through the
built client in Chrome at 1280 and 390 px wide (`/model` typed in the
composer, the card tapped; the browser run was on the first commit).
Claude answered `Set model to … for this session only` each time, and
`~/.claude/settings.json` kept its model, effort and modification time.
- A Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) adversarial pass on the first head: one
High and three Medium fixed in 6e01a75, one Medium and the description
join changed as it suggested, two Medium left as stated limits (see the
comment below).

## Maintainer validation

- Reviewed and merged current main into this branch without conflicts.
- Bun 1.4.2 on macOS: typecheck and production build passed; unit suite
**1432 passed, 15 skipped, 0 failed**; isolated herdr 0.9.3 prompt
contracts **12 passed**.
- While validating #503's shared-reader update, the real React/HTTP
client displayed this Claude card at 1280 and 390 CSS pixels and
selected Haiku with `s`. The scripted menu logged only `session: Haiku
4.5`, with no default-setting action. No real model request or user
configuration was used.

…icks for this session only (#594)

## Change

`/effort` sent from a Claude Code chat was a dead end. It was not in the
chat's slash list, and typed by hand it opened Claude Code's effort
slider in the pane, where no reader knew the screen. herdr reports the
pane idle while the slider waits, so not even the fallback card
appeared, and the level had to be set in the terminal.

This adds a reader for that slider (`claude-effort` in
`server/prompt.ts`), so the existing prompt card shows it, the same way
#501 did for `/model`. Nothing changes on the client or on the wire.

- **What becomes a card.** The slider is recognised by its hint, `←/→ to
adjust · Enter to confirm · s for this session only · Esc to cancel`,
with a line of level names above it, the track with one `▲` above that,
and the `Effort` title. The options are the levels Claude draws (low,
medium, high, xhigh, max on Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1). `▲` is read as over
the level whose name it is centred on, within 3 columns, else no card.
- **A pick is for this session only.** The answer moves the slider with
`←` / `→` and types `s`. It never sends Enter, which saves the level as
the default for new sessions (per model, in `modelSettings`). Typing
`/effort high` by hand still saves a default, as it does in the
terminal: that is Claude Code's own behaviour for a level typed after
the command.
- **Same guards as the model list.** The slider is read again before the
`s`, also when the pick needs no move, and the letter goes only while
`▲` stands over the chosen level. Each move after the first waits for
the slider to show the one before it. A slider the reader cannot take,
for example level names a narrow pane wrapped, gets no fallback card and
holds pending delivery back (`modelListWaits`), because both end in
Enter.
- **Moves.** `←` / `→` count as moves for this responder only. Elsewhere
they stay a menu's own keys (Claude's question tabs).
- **One card wherever `▲` is.** The card's id does not depend on where
the slider stands, so moving it in the terminal does not replace the
card.
- `/effort` joins Claude's built-in slash list, described in Claude
Code's own words.
- Ultracode (the slider's Tab toggle) is left to the terminal.

Related:

- #523 by @suho-han, closed today, read Claude's effort slider as part
of a composer control for model and effort. Its close comment said the
slider reading would feed into the maintainer's own change, with credit.
This PR is written fresh against Claude Code 2.1.294's screen (#523
could not capture a real `/effort` screen), but it is the same feature,
so the changelog credits it.
- #501 and #503: the `/model` cards this follows (letter `s`, never
Enter, look before the letter).
- #456 and #467: the model and effort shown in the composer's pill. The
pill picks the new level up with Claude's next answer, as it does for a
model.

Known limits:

- #542 applies here too. The guard reads this slider's hint with
`claudeModelListWaits`, so a hint split inside a word, or over more than
six lines, is missed in the same way.
- #469 applies here too. The slider closing between the last read and
the `s` still lets the letter into Claude's prompt.
- A narrow pane's slider was not captured live. A wrapped line of levels
is left to the terminal, and that path is covered by unit fixtures only.
- Models with four levels (Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6) were not captured. The
reader takes whatever level names are drawn, but `▲`'s spacing there is
unverified.

## Validation

- `bun run typecheck`: passed. `bun run test:unit`: 1780 passed, 0
failed (before the rebase on 6993563). After the rebase: typecheck
passed and `server/prompt.test.ts` 188 passed, 0 failed.
- `server/prompt.test.ts`: the fixture drawing is checked against a
capture of Claude Code 2.1.294's slider at 120 columns. Tests cover
reading, one id across `▲` positions, keys (`←` / `→` then `s`), no card
and no hold once the slider is answered or under later output, no card
without the session-only key, a wrapped level line (no card, still
holds), `▲` between two levels, and two route cases: a pick two levels
left (`left, left, s`), and `▲` moved in the terminal mid-pick (one
arrow, no letter, 409).
- Real Claude Code 2.1.294 in an isolated herdr 0.9.3 session
(`herdr-web-ui-test-effortprobe`), through this branch's `createServer`.
`GET /api/pane/commands` lists `effort`. `/effort` then `GET
/api/pane/prompt` gave the card with five levels. Answering xhigh and
then low over `POST /api/pane/prompt/answer` printed `Set effort level
to xhigh (this session only)` and `Set effort level to low (this session
only)`, and the banner read `with low effort`. `~/.claude/settings.json`
kept its modification time through every probe and pick.

## Change

`/model` sent from a Claude Code, Codex, pi or OmO chat gets a card and
picks for the session (#501, #503, #942). From an omp chat it got
nothing: omp's screens had no reader, and #942's reader is OmO's list,
which omp does not draw. (#1250 was closed as covered by #942; this is
the omp half.)

omp 18.11.1 has two model screens, read from its source and checked on a
real omp:

- `/model` opens the fullscreen **Models hub**. Enter on a model assigns
it a role, and the default role is saved to omp's settings for later
sessions. It has no session-only path, so no card should answer it.
- `/switch` (and Alt+P) opens the compact **Switch Model** picker:
"Session-only switch — role models stay unchanged", footer `↑/↓ models ·
⏎ use for this session · type to search · @ quick roles · ⎋ close`. This
is the list Claude Code's `s` and Codex's `s session` correspond to. omp
itself describes `/model` as "Switch model for this session".

So, keeping to the existing pattern (read the agent's own list off the
screen, answer through `POST /api/pane/prompt/answer`, no catalogue of
our own):

1. **A reader for omp's Switch Model picker** (`parseOmpModel`,
responder `omp-model`). The picker is drawn over the bottom of the
screen, so it counts only while its footer and bottom border end the
screen. It reads the window's rows (`provider/id`, `●` on the model in
use), steps over the rule omp draws between recent and other models (↑/↓
skip it too), and says "More models are listed in the terminal." when a
scrollbar shows the list runs past the window. Quick-role mode (`@`) and
task-model mode (Alt+P) change the status line or title, and are not
read. A model whose window the conversation already overflows (`⦸
context>131k`) gets a description: omp compacts the conversation with
the current model before switching. The answer moves by arrows and
checks the model under the cursor by name before the Enter, as
`pi-model` and `omo-model` do, because omp reorders the rows if its
catalogue refreshes under them.
2. **`/model` sent from an omp chat goes as `/switch`**
(`server/core/composer.ts`, before `agent.prompt`). This applies only to
a bare `/model` sent to a pane herdr reports as `omp`. `/model <args>`,
the terminal's own input line and every other agent's `/model` go as
written. `/model` is now listed in omp's chat command list with omp's
own description; it was left out before as an unrepresentable screen.

Effort: omp's picker has no effort step. omp applies the model's own
level for the session, and effort stays on Shift+Tab or `/switch
id:level`. So this card picks the model only.

The two commits depend on each other: the second only makes sense with
the first's card. No new UI strings, so no dictionary entries.

## Validation

- `server/prompt.test.ts`: four captures of omp 18.11.1 running
`/switch` in an isolated herdr session (provider names and folder
renamed): 120×40 as it opens, scrolled past the recent/other rule, after
a search, and 94×18 as opened from the chat's `/model` in a browser,
where omp cuts its footer at the edge. Plus tests for an over-context
row, a dismissed picker, output under it, quick-role and task-model
modes, and a pane that is not omp's. A route-table case answers the
picker across the rule (`down, down, enter`).
- `server/submit.contract.test.ts` (on the isolated herdr through `bun
run check run`): a bare `/model` reaches an omp pane as `/switch`.
`/model gpt-6-sol` reaches it as written, and so does Claude's `/model`.
82 pass.
- `server/skills/omp.test.ts`: `/model` is listed with omp's
description, and a prompt template of the same name stays hidden.
- End to end, this branch's server on its own port against an isolated
herdr session running omp 18.11.1, in Chromium on macOS:
- The palette offered `/model — Switch model for this session`. Sending
it showed the card "Select model for this session (currently …). More
models are listed in the terminal." with the picker's five rows. Tapping
the third row switched omp: its status line said `Session-only model:
…/deepseek-v4-flash`, and the footer named the new model. omp's settings
file was unchanged, so the default role kept its model.
- Sending `/model` again named the new model as current. Esc in the
terminal closed the picker, including with the cursor moved to another
model first, and the model stayed as it was. The card went away with the
picker.
  - No message was sent to the model at any point.
- `bun run check fast`: generated types, generated themes, typecheck and
build pass. Unit tests: 4428 pass, 1 fail. The failure is
`scripts/install-star.test.ts` ("opens nothing on a PC with no
display"), which fails the same way on `main` on this Mac.
