perf(chat): load KaTeX with the first math expression, not with the page - #493
Conversation
📝 SummarySummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughMarkdown now loads KaTeX on demand when math appears. Until KaTeX loads, math displays as delimited source text. Unit and browser checks cover rendering and failed requests, and the development documentation lists the browser QA command. ChangesOn-demand math rendering

KaTeX was a fifth of the startup script for a feature most replies never use. It is now a chunk of its own (src/lib/katex.ts, with its stylesheet) that the first expression in the chat fetches; until it arrives that expression shows in its source form, as it already did when KaTeX could not read it, and every later one is typeset at once. Startup JS 408 kB -> 331 kB gzipped, CSS 48 kB -> 39 kB. scripts/math-browser-qa.ts checks in Chrome that nothing is fetched for prose, the chunk comes with the first expression and only once, and inline and display math are typeset. The unit test that renders math statically waits on loadKatex() first. 🤖 Assisted by kilhyeonjun-harness
… a reload Chrome answers a failed dynamic import from its module map for the page's life, so the retry the loader offered never fetched again. Every expression now waits on the one load; the QA covers the offline case.

46-67: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAssert that prose-only chat does not request the KaTeX chunk.
The test checks rendered markup, then records a count of all script requests. A prose-triggered KaTeX request after that snapshot but before
refresh()can satisfy the later count increase. Track the KaTeX chunk separately and assert it is not requested during the prose-only phase. The Markdown unit test callsloadKatex()explicitly and does not cover this case.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Reviewed the shared lazy import, React lifecycle, raw-source fallback and service-worker cache behavior. No remaining blocking code finding. Strengthened the browser test to use Vite's production configuration: it verifies both JS and CSS are absent for prose, fetched once for the first math, applied for inline/display math, and reused afterwards. The failed-fetch case verifies current and later expressions remain as source without retries or uncaught errors. That regression and 31 Markdown unit tests pass locally, and the browser check now runs in CI. The final branch includes merged #444 and #430; merge remains gated on its required CI.

S1 (P0, security): decideAccess now default-denies a non-loopback client that holds no token and no paired device, instead of answering full access to anyone who reaches the port. HERDR_WEB_ALLOW_OPEN=1 restores the old open shape for an owner who wants it, and the startup warning now names it. Pairing initiation requires an owner session; completing a pairing with a code still works from anywhere, since that is how a new device joins. A1 (P0, accessibility): the terminal host is a labelled region announced as a terminal, with a label derived from the pane title, and screenReaderMode is enabled so xterm exposes a real accessibility tree. Before, the product's central surface was invisible to screen readers. Verified in Chromium by scripts/p0-verify.ts: 41 accessibility-tree rows and a live region under the real CSP header, with the label persisting across a workspace open. Also lands, from the report's own plan: S2 correlation ids on 500s, S3 CSP, S4 https-only push endpoints, S5 auth backoff, S6 Origin handling, S7 watch limits, S8 clipboard opt-in, S9 draft expiry, S10 link scheme checks, A2-A8 focus traps, tabpanel wiring and heading remapping, V1-V8 UI consistency, R1-R2 responsive, and the reliability fixes RL1-RL5, RC1, RC4, P1, P2. <!-- See CONTRIBUTING.md for checks, translations, contract tests and the changelog (a file in changelog.d/, never CHANGELOG.md). --> Closes #2407. ## Change Chat draws math written with dollar signs, beside the `\(…\)` and `\[…\]` it already drew: - `$…$` inline. - `$$…$$` as display math, on its own lines or on one line. - A ```` ```math ```` fence as display math (GitHub's form). One KaTeX cannot draw stays the code block it is. The design follows GitHub's dollar math, with stricter inline rules, because agents write prices and shell variables in the same replies. An inline `$` reads as math only when all of these hold: - It follows no Latin letter, digit, backslash or `$`. Korean, Japanese and Chinese text may touch it, so `값은$x$이다` and `$x$는` are drawn. - The formula has no space just inside either `$`, and closes on the same line. - The closing `$` comes before no Latin letter, digit, `_`, `$` or shell mark (`{ ( # @ *`). Sentence punctuation (`$x$?`) is fine. - It is not a number, a space, then a word: that is a price. So `it costs $5 and $10`, `I paid $5 for X$`, `$HOME/${PATH}` and `cd $HOME/$(whoami)` stay as written, while `$E=mc^2$`, `$2 + 2 = 4$` and `What is $x$?` are drawn. Known trade-offs: - `$2 x$` stays text under the price rule (`$2x$` is drawn). - `$HOME/$?` reads `HOME/` as a formula. - A blank line ends a display formula's search for its close, as LaTeX rejects one there. So an unclosed `$$` or `\[` no longer hides a later formula. A display formula with a blank line inside now shows as text. Two older `\[` cases are fixed with the new reader: - An unclosed `\[` no longer hides a later formula. - `\[x\] and prose` on one line no longer swallows the blocks after it. A formula KaTeX cannot draw, or not yet, shows as written: `$x$`, or `$$…$$` on its own lines. The reply's MD copy is its source, dollars included. An omp Ask card holding a ```` ```math ```` fence stays as drawn, as one with Mermaid does (#2233). Formulas take the reply's text color in every theme, as `\(…\)` already did. No new CSS colors. **Bundle:** KaTeX was already bundled locally and lazy-loaded with the first formula (#493). This PR changes neither. - JS chunk: 259 KB raw, 76.6 KB gzip, 71.3 KB brotli. - Stylesheet: 29.8 KB raw, 7.9 KB gzip. - Fonts: loaded only as KaTeX uses them. The parser change adds no measurable size to the main chunk. Prose with no math still fetches none of it. ## Validation - `bun test src/lib/markdown.test.ts server/omp-ask.test.ts`: 64 pass. Fail-first: the new parser, render and card tests fail on main, and each review fix's test fails on the commit before it. The inline scanner keeps its "looks once" bound, now with a `$` fixture. A 200k-char line of hostile dollars reads in linear time. - `bun scripts/chat-math-demo-regression.ts` (added to the browser lane) on the demo app at 1280 and 390, Codex dark and light. It checks that: - 3 inline and 3 display formulas (`$`, `$$`, ```` ```math ````, `\(`, `\[`) are drawn by KaTeX with no error and no code block; - every formula is in the reply's text color; - the prices line reads as written; - the MD copy equals the source. - `bun run check fast`: green. - Reviews: omo code reviewer and Codex (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh), three rounds. All findings are fixed; the record is in a comment below. Round 3: omo APPROVE. Codex's only round-3 finding (fallback layout) is fixed in the last commit. - Not run: `bun run check integration browser` (CI runs it).
Change
KaTeX and its stylesheet load together when the first math expression appears. Prose-only chat no longer downloads them with the startup bundle. All expressions share one import promise; later expressions render immediately after it resolves.
While loading, or if the chunk cannot be fetched, expressions remain readable in their source form. A failed import stays failed until reload; there is no automatic retry. Existing service-worker asset caching also covers the new chunks after their first successful fetch.
The contributor measured startup JS shrinking from 408 KB to 331 KB gzipped, with startup CSS shrinking from 48 KB to 39 KB. The maintainer's macOS production build confirms a separate 261.51 KB JavaScript chunk and 30.25 KB stylesheet.
