Fixes #3266
Fixes #3268

What

Since 0.5.0 the terminal is drawn by libghostty (#3035). Its overlay redraws the cursor only on a frame that GhosttyVt.frame() reports as changed, and frame() reported a change only when libghostty marked a row dirty. Some writes move the cursor and change no row:

After those writes the drawn cursor stayed where the last typed letter left it, while the program's cursor (and xterm's helper textarea) had moved. That matches what @matiemer measured in both issues.

frame() now also reports a change when the cursor's position, visibility or style differs from the last frame's, so the overlay redraws it. Hide/show cursor sequences (CSI ?25 l/h) are covered by the same check. The overlay is unchanged: it still writes the cursor's style only on a frame that changed.

Tests (each fails on main's vt.ts, passes with the fix)

  • src/lib/ghostty/vt.test.ts: a frame that only moved the cursor reports a change. The test covers CUB, CUF, a space onto a blank cell, CUP, hiding and showing the cursor. A frame with nothing new still reports none.
  • src/lib/ghostty/overlay-announce.test.ts: the overlay's drawn cursor follows CUF, CUP and CUB (24px stayed 24px before the fix). This test comes from the Space key has no visible effect until another character is typed in terminal mode #3268 investigation.
  • scripts/terminal-ghostty-demo-regression.ts: in a real browser, a Left arrow moves the drawn .ghostty-cursor back one cell. With main's vt.ts, this check times out waiting for the cursor to move.

Validation

  • In the CI runner image (herdr-ci-runner:local) on a standalone clone, at the first commit (same vt.ts fix; the later amend only added the two test cases and the changelog wording):
    • bun run check fast: ok (12987 unit tests pass, 0 fail).
    • scripts/terminal-ghostty-demo-regression.ts: PASS.
    • scripts/terminal-keyboard-demo-regression.ts: PASS.
    • scripts/terminal-ghostty-demo-regression.ts with main's vt.ts: FAIL (timeout, as expected).
  • At this head, on the host: bun run check fast ok (12989 unit tests pass, 0 fail; typecheck and build ok). Also run here: bun test src/lib/ghostty/ scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts (57 pass) and bun run typecheck (exit 0).
  • Not run: the full integration suite and the native Windows/macOS jobs. Nothing they cover changed.

…ursor

libghostty marks no row dirty when only the cursor moves (an arrow key in a
shell or less, a space typed onto a blank cell), so frame() reported no
change and the overlay kept drawing the cursor where the last typed letter
left it. frame() now also reports a change when the cursor's position,
visibility or style differs from the last frame's.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed terminal cursor updates so the cursor follows typed text, spaces, and arrow-key movement.
    • Fixed cursor-only changes so they are reflected even when no text rows change.

GhosttyVt now detects cursor-only changes between frames. Added regression checks cover cursor movement in frame updates, overlays, and the core-server demo. A changelog entry describes the terminal cursor behavior.

Changes: Terminal cursor updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect cursor-only frame changes
src/lib/ghostty/vt.ts
GhosttyVt stores the cursor from the previous frame. When no rows are dirty, frame() reports whether cursor visibility, position, or style changed.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the drawn cursor now moves on arrow keys and a typed space. It matches the changeset, which makes frame() report cursor-only changes so the overlay redraws the cursor. Its scope is specific and concise, with the fix type and component in the prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has the Change section, which describes the problem (cursor not redrawn after cursor-only writes, linked to #3266 and #3268), the resulting behavior, and the fix. It has the Validation section, which lists the commands run (bun run check fast, bun test, bun run typecheck, and the regression script), their results, and the checks not run (full integration suite, native Windows/macOS jobs). The template asks for contract-test coverage only for HTTP/WS changes, and this change does not touch those, so its absence is acceptable. The template's note about the changelog is satisfied by the changelog.d entry in the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#3266, #3268] Both issues report the same defect: after a cursor-only write, the drawn cursor does not move. The cause is in GhosttyVt.frame() in src/lib/ghostty/vt.ts. Before the fix, frame() returned false when libghostty reported no dirty row, so the overlay had no reason to redraw the cursor. At the reviewed head, frame() reads the cursor (c.visible, c.x, c.y, c.style) after render_state_update, compares it with the snapshot in this.lastCursor, and returns cursorMoved when no row is dirty. Arrow keys (CUB/CUF), a space onto a blank cell (x advances, no row content changes), CUP, and CSI ?25 l/h all change one of these fields, so each now reports a change. Dirty rows keep the existing draw path. The PR tests cover these cases: vt.test.ts (frame reports change for cursor moves, visibility changes, and not for an empty write), overlay-announce.test.ts (drawn cursor moves 24px to 32px, 64px, 56px), and the browser regression script (Left arrow moves .ghostty-cursor). I did not re-run these tests. I did not re-read the overlay's frame-handling code in src/lib/ghostty/overlay.ts (the read was truncated), so the redraw path is confirmed only by the PR's description and the overlay-announce test. No unmet coding requirement is found.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changed files at the reviewed head: src/lib/ghostty/vt.ts (cursor snapshot and frame() return value, the fix itself), src/lib/ghostty/vt.test.ts and src/lib/ghostty/overlay-announce.test.ts (tests of cursor-only frame changes and overlay cursor position), scripts/terminal-ghostty-demo-regression.ts (browser check of the Left arrow cursor move, supporting #3266), and changelog.d/terminal-arrow-cursor.md (a Fixed entry, documentation). Each change supports the cursor-redraw objective. The vt.ts diff contains only the lastCursor field, the cursor comparison, and the changed early return. No unrelated behavior change is found. The overlay source was not changed according to the PR and the summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 4 files. Codex adversarial review (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) at 36370cc: no HIGH.

  • MEDIUM, pre-existing on main and not introduced here: after a refit that changes only the cell size (same columns and rows), libghostty reports no dirty row and the cursor's cell position is unchanged, so frame() returns false. The drawn cursor keeps its old pixel left and width until the next cursor move or redrawn row. Codex showed frame() returning false after GhosttyVt.resize(40, 4, 10, 16) following a frame at 8x16. It is not reproduced in the UI: a font change normally changes the column count too, and that does redraw. Left out of this fix to keep it minimal.
  • Codex also checked these paths directly: the cursor is read after render_state_update; reset, scrolling back and returning to the bottom, and cursor style changes (bar, underline, block) all report a change and the right cursor.

Add a Left-key round-trip check.

This check injects cursor movement as PTY output, so it passes even if Left-key input is dropped. Add a browser check that presses Left at a real shell prompt and verifies that the drawn cursor moves. Keep this output-rendering check as well.

Add a style-only frame assertion.

After a clean frame, change a stationary block cursor to a bar with \x1b[6 q. Assert that frame() returns true and the cursor style changes. Without this case, removing style from the snapshot could pass the tests while leaving the overlay drawing the block.

CodeRabbit's two nitpicks (both Trivial, Low value) are left out, with no new push, so the reviewed and gated head stays 36370cc:

  • A Left-key round trip from the browser to a real shell: the bug was never in the input path. In both issues the program received the arrow and space (the helper textarea moved, and input() returned the space). scripts/terminal-keyboard-demo-regression.ts and scripts/terminal-command-arrows-regression.ts already cover keys reaching the pane. The new check covers the part that broke: drawing the cursor from the pane's output.
  • A style-only frame assertion (CSI 6 SP q): the style is part of the snapshot frame() compares. Codex checked bar, underline and block style changes directly against this head, and each reported a change with the right style.

Merge note (merge pass) at head 36370cc:

CI note: Browser regression (other scripts) failed twice on this head, both times in scripts/terminal-view-replay-demo-regression.ts (390px pass, timeout waiting for the replayed mark). Both failing attempts ran on the herdr-ci-devswha-System-Product-Name-* runners. The third attempt ran on a ThinkStation P620 runner and passed, so every check is now green at 36370cc.

The failure did not reproduce in herdr-ci-runner:local at this head:

  • the whole other-scripts suite through scripts/ci-browser-parallel.ts (6 workers, CI=1, self-hosted): every script except recent-folders-regression passed. That one failed only because my container's HOME was under /tmp, and it passes as the image's own user.
  • the script alone, 16 copies in parallel as uid 1001 with HOME=/home/runner: 16/16 pass.
  • 24 more runs under parallel load: 24/24 pass.

On main's vt.ts, the script failed 1 of 26 runs locally, so its flake on a loaded host predates this change.
