fix(codex): keep chat messages out of Codex's own screens - #3103
Chat messages typed into Codex's own screens. herdr reports Codex at rest while one of its own lists or fields is up (/model and its reasoning levels, /permissions, /review, /theme, /resume, /statusline, /experimental, /rename's field, the agents view, the transcript view, the /diff pager, the folder-trust screen). agent.prompt therefore pastes a chat message into them. The list drops the paste, and the Enter 300 ms later takes the row under the cursor. Seen live: two messages after /model walked the lists to a new effort. Under enter default · s session · esc back, that Enter saves the row as the default for every new session. In the transcript view, ↵ rewind rewinds the conversation.
codexInputHeld (server/dialogs/codex.ts) reads only whole key hints in the screen's last two rows. The composer's draft and its status row (model, effort, folder, thread name) don't count, so a thread named "esc back" isn't taken for one.
registry.holdsInput is waits plus that check. waits itself is unchanged, so the fallback cards for other Codex lists stay as they are.
createSubmitText (immediate path; not the terminal's input line) and the pending path both refuse with agent_blocked before anything is typed, as for a menu herdr does report. The message stays in the box.
Codex at Ultra reasoning effort (0.164 on) draws its composer as », as codex-queue.ts and codex-steering.ts already know. Three readers knew only ›:
codexInputRow: the still-open notice never armed.
start-screen.ts (whose effort list also lacked ultra): a fresh pane showed "Conversation unavailable" instead of an empty chat.
codex.tsdisplayedFirstExchange: the first answer ran on through the composer and matched nothing. codexScreenParts also took a draft in the » box for an answer shown.
Found on a real Codex 0.166 with its own CODEX_HOME and a loopback stand-in for the provider. Before the fix, a fresh Ultra pane's chat stayed unavailable after answers; after it, the chat showed them, as at Extra high.
Not included: with more than 8 models, Codex draws ↓ between the eighth row and the footer, and parseCodexModel/codexModelListWaits then read no /model card. The guard above still holds the input there.
Validation
bun run check fast (Bun 1.4.2, HERDR_* unset): everything passes except server/dialogs/pi-ask-user-route.test.ts. It fails the same way on main without this change (3904098).
Changed and new tests: server/core/codex-held-input.test.ts (every screen above held, composer and look-alikes free, no read for other agents), plus cases in src/lib/inputRow.test.ts, server/start-screen.test.ts, server/codex.test.ts and server/core/omp-submit.test.ts (197 pass).
Also run downstream (OmaRelay): its full gate, and browser tests at 860 and 412 px touch with a stand-in that records every byte.
Skipped: scripts/ui-regression.ts, since no UI was changed.
herdr reports Codex at rest under its own lists and fields, so a chat
message was pasted into them: the paste was dropped and its Enter took
the row under the cursor (walking /model, saving a model as the default
for every new session, rewinding from the transcript view). Refuse such a
send before anything is typed, on the immediate and pending paths.
At Ultra reasoning effort Codex draws its composer as », which three
readers did not know: the still-open notice never armed, a fresh pane
could not open as an empty chat, and a first answer ran on through the
composer and matched nothing.

Bug Fixes
Chat messages are no longer sent while Codex is waiting for a menu selection or other input; your message stays in the composer until the screen is ready.
Codex Ultra chats are recognized correctly, including their composer and first response, so draft text and status rows aren’t mistaken for an answer.
New Features
Starting a fresh Codex chat preserves the selected model and Ultra reasoning effort.
The change adds detection for Codex screens that hold input and blocks submissions on those screens. It also recognizes the Codex Ultra » composer marker in screen parsing, input-row detection, and first-exchange matching.
A new Codex screen check detects action hints on recent rows. The registry exposes holdsInput without changing Codex’s existing waits classification. Tests cover held and free screens, including ANSI styling and divider rows.
Codex submissions read the detection screen and stop with agent_blocked when input is held. Pending context uses holdsInput. Tests cover blocked and allowed submissions, other agents, and terminal-originated input. The changelog records the input-handling and fresh-chat fixes.
Start-screen and input-row parsing recognize the » composer marker. Start-screen parsing also accepts Ultra reasoning effort. Tests cover extracted model and effort, empty and typed composers, and open-screen state.
Codex screen parsing treats » as a prompt boundary. Tests cover matching answers with Ultra composer and status rows, and exclude composer text and empty composers from answers.
devswha/ovis#2426: Both changes exclude Codex composer text from conversation matching. This PR also handles the Ultra » composer.
devswha/ovis#2636: Both changes improve matching of displayed Codex answers. This PR excludes the Ultra composer and status rows from the displayed answer.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 4e6dc
The change improves Codex input protection, but narrow resume pickers can still consume chat input, certain multiline drafts can remain unsent, and queued messages may wait up to the next reconciliation after a menu closes. These bounded issues warrant owner awareness and follow-up.

Detect the key-only resume picker footer.
At six columns, Codex 0.166 shows key-only hints that this guard misses. A chat message can become a session search, and Enter can resume a match instead of sending the message. Recognize this picker before submitting input.

ordinary chat content as a picker.
The new submission test covers createSubmitText, not pending delivery. Test an idle Codex /permissions screen and assert refusal with no terminal writes. Replacing registry.holdsInput with registry.waits in pendingContext could otherwise allow a pending paste and Enter.

Review follow-ups for the Codex held-input guard:
- codexInputHeld no longer reads a composer draft whose last line looks
like key hints, or a status row wrapped onto a thread named "esc back",
as one of Codex's own screens: the composer's footer last means free,
and only rows under the composer's status row count.
- "»" marks the input box only on the last prompt row, so a "»" row in an
answer can no longer cut the answer short and match another session.
- A queued message refused for what the screen alone shows, while herdr
reports the agent at rest, is tried again on the pane's next output
instead of waiting for the next status reconciliation (up to 60 s).
Thank you @nocstah for this fix and for the careful write-up! We reproduced the bug on main with a real Codex 0.167 in an isolated herdr session: with /model open herdr reports Codex idle, main's guard lets the message through, and agent.prompt walked the list into "Select Reasoning Level" (enter default). Your guard catches that screen.
We pushed a review follow-up to your branch (no force-push, your commit kept as is):
codexInputHeld: a composer draft whose last line reads like key hints (footer hidden), or a status row wrapped onto a thread named esc back, no longer counts as a Codex list. The composer's footer last means free, and only rows under the composer's status row count. Checked against a real Codex 0.167 draft too.
» counts as the input box only on the last prompt row (codexBoxAt). Before this, a » row inside an answer could cut the first exchange short and match another session.
A queued message refused because the screen alone holds the input (herdr reports idle/done) is tried again on the pane's next terminal output. It no longer waits for the next status reconciliation (up to 60 s).
Each change has a test that fails without it. bun run check fast passed at fff4aec.
Reviews: omo CLEAR at fff4aec. Codex (adversarial, xhigh) found nothing new on the matcher or the held-screen reader. One residual MEDIUM, left as is: if the closing redraw arrives while the pre-send pane.read is still in flight, that redraw is missed. The message then waits for the next redraw or the status reconciliation, as on main. CodeRabbit skipped the new head.
One thing is still needed from you: please sign the CLA by commenting I have read the CLA Document and I hereby sign the CLA on this PR. The CLA check blocks the merge until then.
After agent.prompt refuses a blocked Codex, the collapsed-queue fallback types
raw text and Enter. It now also refuses when the screen it read holds one of
Codex's own lists or fields (codexInputHeld), which may open after the
pre-send check. The submit contract tests count the pre-send screen read.
The integration run at fff4aec failed 3 tests in server/submit.contract.test.ts. They counted pane.read calls, and your guard intentionally adds one screen read before a Codex send. They now expect that read. A send still never reads the input box.
blockedOnlyByCodexQueue (the fallback that types past a collapsed Codex queue) now also refuses when its screen read shows one of Codex's own lists or fields (registry.holdsInput). Before, a list or the transcript view that opened between the pre-send check and herdr's refusal could get raw text plus Enter. New test in server/core/codex-held-input.test.ts fails without it.
Validation: bun run check fast passed at 669eb71. The 7 related files (submit.contract, codex-held-input, pending-agent-only, omp-submit, codex, start-screen, prompt) passed 742/742 in an isolated herdr session.
Reviews at 669eb71: omo CLEAR. Codex (adversarial, xhigh), with each finding checked:
HIGH (not reproduced, does not block): a /resume footer wrapped by a narrow pane could escape the last-two-rows check. A real Codex 0.167 at 40, 28 and 20 columns truncates its footer instead of wrapping it. enter resume stays in the last two rows, and holdsInput returns true on each captured screen.
MEDIUM, left as is: a list opened between the queued path's first screen check and its paste gets the paste. Enter is still withheld, and the outcome reads as uncertain.
MEDIUM, left as is (same residual as before): a close redraw that arrives before the refusal is recorded is missed. The message waits for the next output or status event.
MEDIUM, left as is: with a custom /statusline that drops model and effort, and the footer hidden, a draft whose last line reads exactly like key hints is refused as agent_blocked. Nothing is typed.
