feat(chat): New tab from a chat starts on its agent, model and effort - #3056
Part of #774. #1512 already added New tab / New workspace with an agent, its model, effort, skills and first message. What was still missing is the issue's "one step from chat mode": the chat's New tab with an agent… button opened the dialog on the last agent picked with an empty model and effort, so a new session like the current chat took a few more picks.
Now that button opens the dialog on:
the chat's own agent (the pane's agent kind, as herdr reports it);
the model and effort the chat recorded last (ConversationMetadata, the same values as the composer's model pill). Each one is used only where the agent's launch takes it (recordedChoices in src/lib/agentLaunchMode.ts, which reuses launchChoiceFault). So Claude Code's <synthetic> model, an effort the agent does not name, or an agent whose command line takes no model all fall back to "Agent default". Nothing is guessed.
Every field stays visible and editable before Start, and the skills follow the agent as before. If the PC does not offer that agent, the dialog falls back as it does for a deep link's agent.
No new control. This PR changes only what the existing New tab with an agent… composer button does. That button is still behind its own setting (Settings > Chat > Composer > New tab button, composerNewTabButton, off by default, and never shown on a phone), and the PR adds no default-visible button, chip or field to the chat composer.
Unchanged: the tab menu (the phone's way in), the command palette and the shortcuts still open on the last agent picked with the agent's own model. The composer button itself stays off by default (Settings > Chat > Composer), so the chat composer stays minimal.
Design: this follows the Codex app's new thread, which starts on the model and reasoning effort already shown in its composer rather than resetting them (DESIGN.md entry updated).
Failing first: bun test src/lib/agentLaunchMode.test.ts src/components/NewSessionDialog.test.tsx failed on main. The dialog opened on codex (the remembered agent) and not on the chat's claude, and recordedChoices did not exist. Both pass now (17 pass).
scripts/new-session-skills-browser-qa.ts: all 7 PASS. It gains assertions that the composer button opens on Claude Code with claude-opus-5-5 / high (the demo chat's record). The existing phone (tab menu), Claude, Codex, drop and old-bridge flows are unchanged. Captures were taken at 390 and 1280 in light and dark.
bun run check fast: all green (workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests: 12317 pass, 0 fail). The full suite and the other browser regressions were not run locally; CI runs them.
The captures come from the browser QA's evidence folder (new-session-skills/desktop-dark-from-chat.png: the dialog shows Claude Code, claude-opus-5-5, high, matching the composer's "Opus 5.5 · High" pill).
…#774)
The composer's New tab with an agent... button opens the dialog on the chat's own agent and on the model and effort its conversation recorded last, each only where the agent's launch takes it. The tab menu, palette and shortcuts keep the last agent picked.

New Features
Opening New tab with an agent… from a chat now preselects that chat’s agent and, when supported, its recorded model and effort. You can still edit these choices.
If the chat has no agent, the dialog uses your saved agent preference; model and effort start blank. The tab menu keeps its existing behavior.
The composer’s New tab action now passes its agent and recorded model and effort to the new-tab dialog. The dialog uses supported chat values as initial choices while preserving its existing prefill and saved-agent selection behavior.

Summary
Launch context and choice validation src/lib/agentLaunchMode.ts, src/lib/agentLaunchMode.test.ts
A ChatLaunch type carries the agent and recorded choices. recordedChoices retains values accepted by launch-choice validation and clears missing or unsupported values.
The composer passes the selected agent, model, and effort, or null, through the pane callback and app action into new-tab state.
Dialog defaults and validation src/components/NewSessionDialog.tsx, src/components/NewSessionDialog.test.tsx, scripts/new-session-skills-browser-qa.ts, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/new-tab-from-chat-carries-agent.md
The dialog resolves the initial agent from prefill, chat context, then saved preference. It restores recorded model and effort only when the chat agent matches the selected agent. Tests and supporting descriptions cover these defaults.
Issue 774 asks for a one-step New tab flow from chat mode. This change adds chat-based dialog defaults, but does not add skill completion, prompt entry, or automatic CLI selection.

The composer defaults work in the normal path, but an unavailable agent or slow agent-list response can produce unexpected launch choices or a tab without a running agent. These bounded cases warrant fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

Explanation
The title "feat(chat): New tab from a chat starts on its agent, model and effort" matches the main change: the chat's New tab with an agent button now opens the dialog with the chat's agent, recorded model, and effort. It is concise, specific, and follows a conventional commit style.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. The Change section explains the problem (the button used the last-picked agent with empty model and effort), the resulting behavior, and the unchanged surfaces. It links the parent issue #774 and the prior work #1512. The Validation section lists the commands run, their results, and the checks not run locally (full suite and other browser regressions). The template asks for a linked issue for features; the PR references #774 but does not state a maintainer-agreed link explicitly, which is a minor gap.

…agent (#774)
Review round on #3056: the chat the New tab button was pressed in comes before a creation link's leftover fields, and a carried effort is dropped when the PC does not offer the chat's agent.
Codex (adversarial, Terra xhigh) raised four MEDIUMs. Here is how each was resolved:
A chat's effort could carry to the fallback agent. When the PC does not offer the chat's agent, the dialog falls back to the last agent picked. That kept a level the fallback also names (a Claude chat's high became a Codex launch's high). Fixed: a carried effort now goes with its agent. Test: "drops a chat's effort with its agent when the PC does not offer that agent", which failed before the fix (Received: "high").
A creation link's leftover prefill outranked the chat. Browser Back closes the dialog without clearing newPrefill, so a later composer opening started on the link's agent. Fixed: the chat the button was pressed in now comes before a link's fields. Test: "puts the chat the button was pressed in before a link's fields left from an earlier opening", which failed before the fix (Received: "omp"). The stale prefill on Back is older than this PR and is left as it was.
The picker shows Shell until the agent list loads, and a late fallback can overwrite a pick made meanwhile. Both are older than this PR: the remembered agent goes through the same path on main (set before fetchAgentKinds answers). Left as it was; LOW for this PR.
Metadata keyed by pane only, so a pane that switches agents could carry the previous agent's model until the new conversation is read. Not reproduced. The window lasts from an agent replacement in the same pane until its first conversation read. The carried model is visible and editable in the Model field before Start, and the composer's model pill shows the same stale value today. Left as it was; LOW.
Add mixed-validity cases to the recordedChoices test.
The test covers only inputs where both fields are kept or both are cleared. recordedChoices decides each field separately. A change that clears both fields when one is invalid would still pass every assertion.
Add one case where a valid model keeps its value and the effort is unsupported. Add one case where a valid effort keeps its value and the model is synthetic.
Suggested test addition
expect(recordedChoices("omp", { model: "anthropic/claude-opus-5-5", effort: "high" })).toEqual({ model: "", effort: "" });
+ // a valid model keeps its own choice when the effort is not one the agent takes+ expect(recordedChoices("codex", { model: "gpt-6.1-terra", effort: "bogus-effort" })).toEqual({ model: "gpt-6.1-terra", effort: "" });+ // a valid effort keeps its own choice when the model is synthetic+ expect(recordedChoices("claude", { model: "<synthetic>", effort: "xhigh" })).toEqual({ model: "", effort: "xhigh" });
});

…on, Markdown width and Diff layout rows (#3089)
## What
Four Settings rows go, as the owner chose in the Settings
simplification. Each behaviour stays at today's default, and a value an
older version saved for a removed row is ignored.
| Row | What happens now |
|---|---|
| Chat → History page size | A chat's history loads 10 prompts a page
(the old default). A search's pick still reads back a page of the
server's cap (50). |
| Chat → Composer → New tab button | The composer has no New tab button.
**New tab with agent…** stays in the tab menu (right-click a tab, or its
⋯ on a phone), the command palette and its shortcut. |
| Chat → File viewer → Markdown width | A Markdown preview keeps the
readable width (the chat's lane, centered). |
| Chat → File viewer → Diff layout | The Settings row goes; the diff
viewer's own **Unified / Split** switch in its header still sets and
keeps `diffStyle`, as it did. |
Removed with the button: #3056's chat prefill (`ChatLaunch`,
`recordedChoices`, the dialog's `chat` target, and their tests and
unreleased changelog fragment). Only that button passed a chat's agent,
model and effort to the New tab dialog. The tab menu, the palette and
the shortcut always opened on the last agent picked, and still do.
Kept on purpose:
- Telemetry still reports `markdownWidth`, now always `readable`, so the
event schema and the Worker are unchanged.
- The pinned legacy settings fixture (`settings.legacy-fixture.ts`)
keeps `markdownWidth` as that old version had it, so the old-tab
migration tests still read the old shape.
No new control, nothing added to the composer.
## Validation
- `bun run check fast` on the merged head: all green (typecheck, build,
unit 12524 pass / 0 fail).
- Unit: `settings.test.ts` has a new test, "ignores what was saved for
the rows Settings no longer has": `sanitizeSettings` drops
`historyPrompts`, `composerNewTabButton` and `markdownWidth`, and
telemetry reports `markdownWidth: "readable"`. Also updated: `i18n`
(unused keys dropped; Diff layout / Unified / Split moved to the files
part, now that only the diff viewer uses them), `paletteSettings`
(matrix 46), `preferencesSync`, `NewSessionDialog` and
`agentLaunchMode`.
- Browser, all PASS on the merged head:
- `settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` (20).
- `new-session-skills-browser-qa.ts` (7). It now opens New tab from the
tab menu at every width, and checks that the composer has no button and
Settings no switch even with `composerNewTabButton: true` stored.
- `chat-history-browser-qa.ts` (15): older pages are asked for at 10.
- Before the merge, also all PASS: `repo-diff-browser-qa.ts` (56; its
Unified/Split switch still works) and `file-viewer-regression.ts` (79).
- Not run locally: `bun run check full` and the rest of the browser lane
(CI runs them).

What changes
Part of #774. #1512 already added New tab / New workspace with an agent, its model, effort, skills and first message. What was still missing is the issue's "one step from chat mode": the chat's New tab with an agent… button opened the dialog on the last agent picked with an empty model and effort, so a new session like the current chat took a few more picks.
Now that button opens the dialog on:
ConversationMetadata, the same values as the composer's model pill). Each one is used only where the agent's launch takes it (recordedChoicesinsrc/lib/agentLaunchMode.ts, which reuseslaunchChoiceFault). So Claude Code's<synthetic>model, an effort the agent does not name, or an agent whose command line takes no model all fall back to "Agent default". Nothing is guessed.Every field stays visible and editable before Start, and the skills follow the agent as before. If the PC does not offer that agent, the dialog falls back as it does for a deep link's agent.
No new control. This PR changes only what the existing New tab with an agent… composer button does. That button is still behind its own setting (Settings > Chat > Composer > New tab button,
composerNewTabButton, off by default, and never shown on a phone), and the PR adds no default-visible button, chip or field to the chat composer.Unchanged: the tab menu (the phone's way in), the command palette and the shortcuts still open on the last agent picked with the agent's own model. The composer button itself stays off by default (Settings > Chat > Composer), so the chat composer stays minimal.
Design: this follows the Codex app's new thread, which starts on the model and reasoning effort already shown in its composer rather than resetting them (DESIGN.md entry updated).
Not in this PR (rest of #774)
$completion typed inside the first-message field: the skills are offered as chips (feat(chat): start an agent with its model, effort and skills from Chat #1512). The chips already list only what the picked agent and folder offer.Validation
