feat(opencode): read a subagent's end from its parent's record (experimental setting) - #3022
server/opencode-subagents.ts took a child session's newest idle row as the end of its subagent. With anomalyco/opencode#57418 (open, not merged), a child can go idle while background work it started still runs, and its parent's subagent call is answered only after that work ends. The reader would then count the subagent as done, release the turn's BG hold, and alert DONE while the work goes on.
Behind an experimental setting. Settings → Appearance → Read OpenCode subagent ends from their session (experimental) is a shared setting, off by default. With it off, the reader takes no parent rows at all, so every child's own rows decide, exactly as on main. The re-review reproduced a case that was new with the parent reading, fixed in the last commit, and other corners remain, so the reading ships opt-in. The open cases are listed under "Open after review" and tracked in #3027.
With the setting on, the end comes from the parent's own record, as claude-subagents.ts takes ends from the parent transcript. This holds before and after #57418:
Foreground call: the parent's subagent tool block names the child by state.metadata.sessionID. It runs while the block is running, and ends with the block: completed (with metadata.status other than running), or error (error.type: "aborted" is a cancel). The end time is the block's time.completed.
Background call: answered at once with metadata.status: "running", ended by the parent's synthetic row with metadata.source: "subagent", childID and state (completed, cancelled, error).
Several records for one child: the newest call or notice (by seq) wins, so a call that resumes a child runs it again.
Fallback: the child's own rows decide for a child no call names (a plugin's child, a migrated 1.x store, a call refused before it reached the child) and for a child woken after its parent was told it ended.
Parent's run left a foreground call: a call still running waits on nothing, so the child's rows decide, when a parent idle row follows it (a crash, a stopped turn) or when its row was last written before the OpenCode service now running started (the same orphan rule the children get; this also applies to a background call with no notice). A call that a staged /undo hides tells nothing, since the chat hides it too. The reader uses the same session_v2.revert boundary as sessionView, read only from a store that has the column. A tool error whose message begins Subagent cancelled (OpenCode's own text in subagent.ts) counts as cancelled.
Cost: the parent's rows are filtered in SQL first (instr(data, '"name":"subagent"') on assistant, instr(data, '"source":"subagent"') on synthetic) and read a page of 1000 rows per step, like the children. Each pane's tracker keeps a log of what it read, and each scan works on its own copy. The next read makes one pass over the session's row headers (no data) and re-reads by primary key only the rows whose time_updated moved. It starts over when the count of rows it read changed, or when a row it relied on is gone or no longer names its child (an /undo commit, a replaced row). Reads outside the tracker start cold.
A call is matched only by state.metadata.sessionID, which OpenCode sets just before it prompts the child, and never by the sessionID in the call's input: a resume call refused earlier (permission denied, unknown agent) ran nothing.
Setting
shared/preferences.ts lists opencodeParentEnds with the shared keys. src/lib/settings.ts sets its type, its shared scope, a false default and its sanitizeSettings check. The row in SettingsDialog.tsx sits after Lock pinned agents (experimental), uses the same toggle row, and has Korean, Japanese and Chinese text in src/lib/i18n/settings-agents.*.ts. The settings part files were at the 400-line limit.
server/core/status.ts passes parentEnds: () => preferences.get().settings.opencodeParentEnds === true to OpencodeSubagentStatus, which reads it on every poll and in tasksOf. The status hub's test fake now returns the full SharedPreferences shape (settings: {}).
Design: a plain experimental toggle like the existing Lock pinned agents (experimental) row. Nothing new is drawn, so no other app's pattern applies.
Validation
Failing-first: the four new tests in server/opencode-subagents.test.ts failed on origin/main (0011d8f) and pass with the change. They cover a child that goes idle before its call is answered (rows as #57418 writes them, foreground and background), ends from the parent's records (completed / failed / cancelled / job cancelled, foreground and background), a resumed child, a child woken after its end, a child no call names, and the tracker keeping its count until the parent's call row is answered in place.
Review-round tests: a foreground call the parent's run left, and a parent row deleted and replaced at the same seq. Both fail on the first commit (b1c0e9e) and pass now. A call hidden by a staged /undo is covered too. A third test guards the turn-end frame: after more than two pages of parent history, the count is told synchronously.
An existing test's db.query spy wrapped the same cached statement twice once a read asks for the same SQL on two pages. It now wraps each statement once. The assertion did not change.

Scratch checks, not committed: 65 concurrent pagedState reads of sessions with 1005 rows each all finished (217 ms). The reviews reproduced that, with the first commit's shared 64-entry cache, such reads never finished. A parent of 5000 steps at about 20 KB each (100 MB) with 100 children, read through the tracker: the first read took about 220 ms (main: about 50 ms). Warm polls took 52-98 ms, against 39-60 ms on main, on a loaded machine. The difference is one pass over the parent's row headers.
Row shapes were checked against OpenCode v2.2.5's tool/plugin/subagent.ts, session/subagent-completion.ts and @opencode/schema/session-message (AssistantTool.time.completed, the ToolState union).
UI, scratch check, not committed (demo build, playwright): Settings → Appearance at 1280 and 390, light and dark, English and (at 390) Korean. The new switch starts off and turns on when tapped, the dialog does not overflow sideways, and the page logs no errors. The row matches its neighbors. Screenshots were reviewed locally.
With the setting off (the default), the first new test also checks that a child whose parent still waits reads as ended, as on main.
Not run: the browser regression suites (the change adds one row to an existing settings page, with no selection or focus change), and a live OpenCode with #57418 (the PR has not merged).
Open after review
The first round (omo + Codex Terra xhigh) found the 64-entry module-wide cache's problems: a 65+ session livelock, rows kept after /undo or replacement, and long histories using up the synchronous poll steps. It also found a foreground call left by a crashed parent run, a cancelled job read as failed, and a staged /undo being ignored. All of these are fixed above. The omo re-review at 8c5da31 was CLEAR. The Codex re-review raised the items below, and they are why the reading is opt-in. Details and repros are in #3027.
HIGH, reproduced, new with the parent reading: a crashed foreground call held a child that the restarted service woke and ended. Fixed: any call not ended yet (foreground waited on, or background with no notice), last written before the service started, tells nothing, so the child's rows decide. Tests for both kinds fail on the commits before the fix.
HIGH, reproduced with a fixture, upstream ordering not verified: a late background notice ends a newer call to the same child. main reads this case the same way, from the child's idle row.
HIGH from Codex, rated MEDIUM by omo, mechanism reproduced: a cold read of a long parent history (more than about 1000 rows) finishes after the synchronous poll, on the first read after a pane binds or after the setting is turned on. A plainly running child counts only once the read is whole. Warm reads are covered by a test.
MEDIUM, reproduced, same on main: a staged /undo is applied after only the newest record per child is kept.
MEDIUM, reproduced: the time_updated watermark keeps a stale call after a clock rollback, or a restore with the same ids and count.
MEDIUM, reproduced: a wake in the same millisecond as the recorded end is not seen as newer.
MEDIUM, measured: a warm poll still makes one pass over the parent's row headers (about 90 ms on a 250,000-row fixture).
MEDIUM, from the last review: turning the setting off while a parent still waits on an idle child drops the count to 0, which starts BackgroundWait's 60-second grace, so BG shows for up to a minute more. This follows only a toggle. A read that began under the other side of the setting is now dropped, both in the poll's readOn and in tasksOf, so a toggle mid-read publishes nothing stale.
Note
OpenCode 2.2.x added a session_part table, so a later release may move an assistant row's content out of session_message.data. 2.2.5 still writes it inline. Once parts move, both the chat (server/opencode.ts) and this reader will need to read session_part.
A child session can go idle while background work it started still runs (anomalyco/opencode#57418): its parent's subagent call is answered only once that work ends. Read the parent's newest subagent call or background notice for each child first, and fall back to the child's own rows only for a child no call names or one woken after its parent was told it ended. The parent's rows are read on from the last one seen, its open ones again until they settle.
Fixes#1999
Added an experimental, off-by-default Appearance setting to determine OpenCode subagent completion from the session that started it. When enabled, background waits continue until that session receives the subagent’s completion notice.
Added translations for the setting in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
Adds an experimental, default-off preference for deriving OpenCode subagent completion from the parent session’s records. The tracker combines parent records with child-session rows, updates listed and counted subagents, and includes tests for status, end times, and tracker behavior.

When enabled, parent call and completion records contribute to subagent status and end times. Incremental parent reads are retained by the tracker. Tests cover parent and child record precedence, tracker counts, and fallback cases.
Issue 3027 describes remaining edge cases in parent-record end detection; its crashed foreground call case overlaps with this PR’s fallback behavior.

The feature remains off by default. When enabled, edge cases can misreport subagent status or delay turn-end alerts, and long histories incur extra polling work. Merge risk is low with explicit acceptance of these experimental limitations and follow-up fixes.

Explanation
The title "feat(opencode): read a subagent's end from its parent's record (experimental setting)" matches the main change. The PR adds an opt-in, default-off setting that makes the OpenCode subagent reader take a child's end from the parent session's records. The title names the feature, the source of the end state, and the experimental gating, so it reflects the primary change. It is 85 characters, which is slightly long but within reason.

Explanation
All listed changes support the parent-record reading or its opt-in setting. Changes to shared/preferences.ts, src/lib/settings.ts, src/lib/settings.legacy-fixture.ts, SettingsDialog.tsx, and the settings-agents i18n files (ko, ja, zh) add the setting, its default, its sanitizer, and its UI row. server/core/status.ts and status.fake.ts pass the setting to the reader and update the test fake to the full preferences shape. The /undo boundary (session_v2.revert), the per-pane tracker, and the row re-read logic in server/opencode-subagents.ts are part of how the reader determines ends from parent records and bounds its cost. The changelog entry documents the setting. The telemetry exclusion in settings.ts is minor and is part of the setting's plumbing. No change was found that is demonstrably unrelated to #1999.

Explanation
[#1999] Issue expects an OpenCode subagent to count as running, and to hold its turn's BG, until the parent's own record says it ended, whether or not anomalyco/opencode#57418 ships. The PR gates this behind settings.opencodeParentEnds, which defaults to false (src/lib/settings.ts, server/core/status.ts). With the default, the reader takes no parent rows and keeps main's behavior: the child's newest idle row ends the subagent. The reported bug therefore remains in the default configuration. With the setting on, the PR implements the proposed reading for foreground calls, background notices, resumed children, and the listed fallbacks. Four tests cover the issue's child-idle-before-answer case. One gap remains with the setting on: the PR states that a cold read of a parent history longer than about 1000 rows can finish after the synchronous poll, and a plainly running child counts only once that read is whole. In that window the running child is not counted as running, which conflicts with the expected behavior. The PR also adds fallbacks beyond the issue's list (a running foreground call followed by a parent idle row, and calls last written before service start). These are documented by the author and are not verified against the issue's text.
Resolution
Make the parent-record reading effective by default, or revise #1999's expected behavior with the issue owner to accept an opt-in gate. If the default changes, verify with a default-settings test that a child which goes idle while its subagent call is unanswered stays running. Also make a cold read count a running child before the synchronous poll returns, or keep the child's running state until the read completes, and add a test for a cold read of a history longer than 1000 rows.

Review round: the module-wide 64-session cache could evict a read in progress (a read never finished with 65+ long sessions), and kept a call row an /undo deleted or replaced. Each pane's tracker now keeps its own log, a scan works on its own copy, and a read checks the rows it read are still there and re-reads those written since (time_updated), starting over when one was taken out or put in. A foreground call the parent's run left (an idle row after it) or a staged /undo hides falls back to the child's rows; a cancelled job's tool error counts as cancelled.
…keeps one
sessionView asks session_v2 for revert and counts the session's rows again; a store without the column (and the status hub's test store) threw, and the read gave nothing.
…ehind an experimental setting
The re-review reproduced a crashed foreground call holding a child that the restarted service woke and ended, and found the reading still has corners (a late notice after a new call, a cold long parent history at turn end). Settings -> Appearance -> Read OpenCode subagent ends from their session (experimental) is off by default, and off the reader takes no parent rows at all: each child's own rows tell, as before.

fix(opencode): take a subagent's end from its parent's record
feat(opencode): read a subagent's end from its parent's record (experimental setting)
Nov 5, 2026
…its on nothing
A foreground call last written before the OpenCode service now running started was the old service's: its child's own rows tell, as the children's orphan rule says. A read begun under the other side of the experimental setting tells nothing; the next poll reads again.
… gone tells nothing
A background call answered while still running and never told ended, last written before the service now running started, held its child too.
Review record for this head (29411bb1). CodeRabbit was rate limited on this PR, so these agent reviews stand in.
Round 1 (omo BLOCK, Codex Terra xhigh): every problem came from the first commit's module-wide 64-entry parent-row cache. A read never finished with 65+ long sessions, rows an /undo deleted or replaced stayed cached, and long histories used up the synchronous poll steps. Smaller ones: a foreground call left by a stopped or crashed parent run kept its child running, a cancelled job read as failed, and a staged /undo was ignored. Fixed: each pane now keeps its own log, each scan works on a copy, a read checks the rows it relies on and re-reads those written since, and the smaller items were fixed too. Tests that fail on the first commit cover the replaced row and the left call.
Round 2 (omo CLEAR at 8c5da310, Codex): Codex reproduced a new HIGH. A crashed foreground call held a child that the restarted service woke and ended. Codex also found more corners, so the parent reading moved behind Settings → Appearance → Read OpenCode subagent ends from their session (experimental), off by default. Off, nothing reads parent rows, so behaviour matches main.
Round 3 (omo BLOCK on the crash case, Codex on the setting): a call not yet ended (foreground waited on, or background with no notice) that was last written before the OpenCode service started now tells nothing, so the child's own rows decide. A read begun under the other side of the setting is dropped in both readOn and tasksOf. Each kind has a test that fails before its fix.
Final: omo CLEAR at 8a1b575a and at 29411bb1; the second run followed a merge of main.
Open, all only with the setting on, tracked in #3027: a late background notice after a newer call; the first read of a parent history over about 1000 rows finishing after the synchronous poll; a staged /undo applied after the newest record per child is picked (main reads that case the same way); the time_updated watermark after a clock rollback; a wake in the same millisecond as the recorded end; one pass over the parent's row headers on each warm poll; and a BG grace of up to 60 s after the setting is turned off while a child is held.
Checks: bun run check fast passed at this head (unit 12222 pass, 0 fail, 49 skip). The UI row was checked on the demo build at 1280 and 390, light and dark, in English and (at 390) Korean. Browser regression suites were not run locally; CI runs them.
Parking as a draft: with the setting on, Codex still reproduces several HIGHs (late notice, undo ordering, watermark rollback and others, listed above and in #3027). An opt-in does not make a reproduced HIGH acceptable. This comes back once those are closed or the design reads the subagent end from a single fact OpenCode reports (anomalyco/opencode#57418).

The new parent-authoritative calculation remains behind the existing row.type === null skip, so a named running child with no run row is never considered.
A parent turn ending in that interval can report no background work even though its recorded subagent call is unresolved.
This can occur when: A background call is recorded as running after child-session creation but before the first child run row is written.

Fetch changed row IDs with a filtered query, not a full-history array.
The head query at server/opencode-subagents.ts:179-182 runs json_group_array over every row of the session. Unchanged rows become null, and the array is still serialized and parsed on every poll (line 185). The max aggregates already scan every row, so the added cost is a constant factor. Select the changed IDs in a separate query with seq <= ? and time_updated >= ?, and keep the unfiltered max aggregates separate.

Split the head query so its unfiltered max aggregates remain separate from
changed-row lookup. Replace the full-history json_group_array in the head query

and update the polling flow to consume those filtered IDs.
Assert that the default-off path reads no parent records.
The default-off check at server/opencode-subagents.test.ts:414-415 asserts only that running is 0. That count comes from child rows. A change that reads parent records and discards the result still passes this check.
Add a db.query spy to the default-off check. The spy should fail if parent-record SQL runs while parentEnds is false. The bounded-running test already wraps db.query, but it does not check which SQL ran.

Strengthen the default-off test around `opencodeSubagentState` to verify it does
not query parent records when `parentEnds` is false. Spy on `db.query` and fail
if parent-record SQL is issued, while preserving the existing assertion that
`running` is zero.
Cover both setting-consistency guards with a test where the setting changes during a read.
The three new tracker tests pass parentEnds: () => true, and no test varies the callback. Both guards therefore always pass under test:
The publish guard at server/opencode-subagents.ts:855 compares the scan's setting with the current setting.
The cache-hit guard in tasksOf at server/opencode-subagents.ts:739 compares the captured setting with the current setting after its await.
Removing either comparison leaves every test passing.
Add a test with a mutable parentEnds callback and a multi-page parent history. Use at least 2 * SUBAGENT_PAGE + 5 steps, as the test near line 786 does, so the read yields between pages. Change the setting after the poll starts and before its read finishes. Assert that the count read under the old setting is not published. Then poll again with the setting unchanged and assert that the count for the current setting is published.
Add a second test that changes the setting during the await in tasksOf. Assert that the returned tasks match the setting in effect when the call returns.

Review comment at @server/opencode-subagents.test.ts at line 751:
Extend the OpencodeSubagentStatus tests to cover both setting-consistency
guards: use a mutable parentEnds callback and multi-page history to change the
setting during a poll, verify the old-setting count is not published, then
verify a subsequent poll publishes the current-setting count. Add a separate
tasksOf test that changes the setting during its await and verifies the returned
tasks reflect the setting in effect when the call returns.
The enabled-setting tests assert only countOf and changes. Tests that call tasksOf build their trackers without parentEnds. tasksOf passes the parent-record log to pagedState only when parentEnds is on (server/opencode-subagents.ts:735-737). Removing that forwarding makes the task list read child rows only. The count still reads parent records, so the current count and state tests can pass while the task list changes.
Add a test that enables parentEnds, calls tasksOf in the idle-child scenario, and asserts the task statuses.

Add a test for the `parentEnds`-enabled idle-child scenario that calls `tasksOf`
and asserts the resulting task statuses. Ensure the tracker is configured with

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
A completion notice is associated only with childID; a late notice from an earlier run can overwrite a newer resumed call because precedence uses the notice row's sequence.
The resumed child can disappear from running counts and release BG wait before its current call ends.
This can occur when: The parent resumes a child before delivery of that child's previous background completion notice.

Guard content elements by type before json_extract in the parent calls query.
With the parent-record setting on, a parent assistant row with a subagent call and a string element in content makes json_extract raise malformed JSON. The whole parent read then fails, so the subagent list returns null or the tracked counts stay stale. Filter elements with c.type = 'object' first.

parentStep re-reads a changed parent row only when time_updated >= log.since. A backward clock step or a restore that stamps an older time hides that row's update. A foreground call that completes in that window stays waiting until the parent's idle row arrives. Re-read rows by their stored updated value, or use a change marker that does not depend on clock order.
Scope of the defect
The stale state lasts until the parent's turn ends, not indefinitely. A cached completion does not hide a resumed child, because childEnd uses the child's own end when the child was dispatched after the cached end.

Commit the parent watermark only after its changed rows are reread.
scan.since is set before the count, kept-ID, and changed-row queries finish. A retry after a thrown error skips them and commits the new watermark with the old told map. A changed call written before that watermark is never reread, so its cached status stays stale. Assign scan.since only when that phase completes.

Detect a replaced parent row whose timestamp is older than since.
When a row is removed and another row takes its seq in the cached prefix, the count and told-ID checks still pass. The replacement is read only if its time_updated is at least log.since. An older row, such as one from a restore or after a clock rollback, is skipped. An idle child can then be reported completed while its parent's call still runs.

Apply the staged /undo boundary before each child's records are reduced.
parentStep keeps one record per child, then drops the whole child when its newest record is hidden. An older visible call for that child is lost, and childEnd falls back to the child's own rows. scan.idle also ignores the boundary, so a hidden idle row drops a visible waiting call.
Trigger and consequence
A visible background call with no notice, followed by a hidden record for the same child.
A visible foreground call still waiting, followed by a hidden idle row.
In both cases the child's own idle row can report it completed while the visible parent history shows it running.

Treat a child wake in the same millisecond as the parent's end as a new run.
childEnd keeps the parent's end when the child's newest user or synthetic row has the same time_created as that end. Later child activity is not read, so the run stays listed as completed and is not counted in turnRunning. Timestamps alone cannot order the two events, so the tie needs a separate rule.

When a parent call is recorded after service start, the child's older rows can still mark it lost. This happens if the child's new prompt row is not yet written. Skip the child-row orphan check when the parent record says the child is still running.

Attribute an autonomous child wake to the turn that started the child.
A child that goes idle after a shell-result wake keeps running while its parent call is unnotified. Line 454 then counts it toward the newer parent turn, because its latest synthetic row is after that turn's promptAt. The wait should follow the turn that started the child. Derive turn ownership from the parent call that started the child, or exclude synthetic wakes from turn ownership. The hold ends after the wait limit, so the effect is a delayed turn-end alert, not a permanent hold.

…whose set-aside notice may end its call
- the rows the log relied on are checked by primary key (json_each outside a CROSS JOIN), not with a correlated match over the session's rows: a warm poll with 400 answered calls and 5,000 steps took about 1.7 s, now about 21 ms (#3022's head: about 19 ms)
- a notice set aside for a waited call is read again once that call is answered as having joined a background job
Refs #3027
…al setting) (#3167)
Fixes#3027. Refs #1999 (the reading stays opt-in until
anomalyco/opencode#57418 ships). Supersedes #3022 (its branch, merged
with main, plus the fixes below).
## What
#3022 read an OpenCode subagent's end from its parent session's record
(the `subagent` call block, or the background notice), behind **Read
OpenCode subagent ends from their session (experimental)**. That reading
is ready for anomalyco/opencode#57418, where a child can go idle while
its parent still waits on it. It was parked because review still
reproduced open cases with the setting on. This PR keeps everything from
#3022 and closes those cases using only facts OpenCode records. The
setting stays experimental and off by default, because #57418 is still
open upstream. With the setting off, nothing reads parent rows, so
behaviour matches main.
Each item below has a test that fails on #3022's head and passes here.
1. **A late background notice no longer ends a newer call the parent
waits on** (#3027 case 2). A background notice's row id is the job's
`notificationID`. OpenCode names that id when the job goes to the
background (`Job.markBackground`, then `SubagentCompletion.deliver`
writes the synthetic row with `id: notificationID`, in 2.2.2 and 2.2.5).
Row ids are `Identifier.ascending`: 12 hex digits of `ms * 4096 +
counter`, then random characters. A `subagent` call's row id is named
when its step begins. A call the parent still waits on started a job of
its own: a call to a child whose job is already in the background joins
that job and is answered at once (`subagent.ts`, `Job.block`). So a
notice named before that call's step answers an older job, however late
it was written, and it does not end the call. Every other pair keeps row
order, because a call answered as backgrounded may have joined the job
that an older-named notice ends. A test covers that join case. Ids of
any other form (forked rows, plain ids) fall back to row order, as
before.
2. **A staged `/undo` is applied before the newest record per child is
picked** (#3027 case 4). The parent rows the boundary hides are not read
at all, so an older call the chat still shows decides. When the boundary
moves below what the log has read, the log starts over.
3. **The first read of a long parent history no longer misses the frame
that ends a turn** (#3027 case 3). Reading more than a page of parent
rows from the start takes more than the two synchronous steps (a pane
just bound, a log started over). In that case the children's own rows
are read alone as well, as with the setting off. Their counts are told
at once, but only when neither count is lower than the counts that
stand. So a plainly running child counts in the turn-end frame, and no
count falls before the whole read says so.
4. **Turning the setting off mid-wait no longer holds BG for a minute**
(#3027 case 5). The tracker tells `onChange` that a count was read under
the other side of the setting. `BackgroundWait.running` then starts no
grace for a count that fell that way.
5. **The `time_updated` watermark** (#3022 open item 5). A row the log
took a word from is read again whenever its `time_updated` differs from
the one read, older or newer. A session whose newest row is older than
the log's watermark (a clock set back, a restored store) starts the read
over.
6. **A wake in the same millisecond as the recorded end** (#3022 open
item 6) counts as a wake: a run cannot end in the millisecond it was
dispatched.
## Not changed
- #3022 open item 7 (one pass over the parent's row headers on each warm
poll, measured at about 90 ms on 250,000 rows) is unchanged. The new
watermark check reuses the read the log already makes of the rows it
relies on.
- A late notice after a newer call that was answered as backgrounded
keeps row order. OpenCode writes nothing in the parent's rows that tells
a fresh background job from one the call joined. The `job` table's
pending markers (2.2.5) could tell them apart, but this PR does not read
a new table.
## Validation
- Failing-first: 6 of the 7 new tests in
`server/opencode-subagents.test.ts` (late notice, staged `/undo` order,
same-millisecond wake, long cold read, clock set back, setting toggle)
and the new `server/background-wait.test.ts` test fail on #3022's head
and pass here. The seventh, the join case, passes on both and guards
against a regression. Existing tracker tests now expect the new fifth
`onChange` argument (`false`).
- `bun test server/opencode-subagents.test.ts
server/background-wait.test.ts server/core/status.test.ts`: 133 pass, 0
fail.
- `bun run typecheck`: pass.
- `bun run check fast`: pass on old-desktop through the heavy runner
(unit 12690 pass, 0 fail, 38 skip in 766 files; typecheck, build,
generated types/themes, workflow syntax ok).
- Merged origin/main: the settings row moved into Appearance's
Experimental fold next to **Lock pinned agents (experimental)**, the
fold's keys include `opencodeParentEnds`, and the i18n parts include
`settings-agents.*`.
Not run: the browser regression suites (the only UI change is one row in
an existing settings fold, with no selection or focus change), and a
live OpenCode with #57418 (that PR has not merged).
Superseded by #3167, which reads an OpenCode subagent's end from its parent's record (opt-in, experimental, default off) and covers this draft's items 5-6. Closing this draft.

Fixes #1999
What
server/opencode-subagents.tstook a child session's newestidlerow as the end of its subagent. With anomalyco/opencode#57418 (open, not merged), a child can go idle while background work it started still runs, and its parent'ssubagentcall is answered only after that work ends. The reader would then count the subagent as done, release the turn's BG hold, and alert DONE while the work goes on.Behind an experimental setting.
With the setting on, the end comes from the parent's own record, as
claude-subagents.tstakes ends from the parent transcript. This holds before and after #57418:subagenttool block names the child bystate.metadata.sessionID. It runs while the block isrunning, and ends with the block:completed(withmetadata.statusother thanrunning), orerror(error.type: "aborted"is a cancel). The end time is the block'stime.completed.metadata.status: "running", ended by the parent'ssyntheticrow withmetadata.source: "subagent",childIDandstate(completed, cancelled, error).seq) wins, so a call that resumes a child runs it again.runningwaits on nothing, so the child's rows decide, when a parentidlerow follows it (a crash, a stopped turn) or when its row was last written before the OpenCode service now running started (the same orphan rule the children get; this also applies to a background call with no notice). A call that a staged/undohides tells nothing, since the chat hides it too. The reader uses the samesession_v2.revertboundary assessionView, read only from a store that has the column. Each pane's tracker keeps a log of what it read, and each scan works on its own copy. The next read makes one pass over the session's row headers (nodata) and re-reads by primary key only the rows whosetime_updatedmoved. It starts over when the count of rows it read changed, or when a row it relied on is gone or no longer names its child (an/undocommit, a replaced row). Reads outside the tracker start cold.A call is matched only by
state.metadata.sessionID, which OpenCode sets just before it prompts the child, and never by thesessionIDin the call's input: a resume call refused earlier (permission denied, unknown agent) ran nothing.Setting

Failing-first: the four new tests in
server/opencode-subagents.test.tsfailed onorigin/main(0011d8f) and pass with the change. They cover a child that goes idle before its call is answered (rows as #57418 writes them, foreground and background), ends from the parent's records (completed / failed / cancelled / job cancelled, foreground and background), a resumed child, a child woken after its end, a child no call names, and the tracker keeping its count until the parent's call row is answered in place.Review-round tests: a foreground call the parent's run left, and a parent row deleted and replaced at the same seq. Both fail on the first commit (b1c0e9e) and pass now. A call hidden by a staged
/undois covered too. A third test guards the turn-end frame: after more than two pages of parent history, the count is told synchronously. An existing test's
db.queryspy wrapped the same cached statement twice once a read asks for the same SQL on two pages. It now wraps each statement once. pagedStatereads of sessions with 1005 rows each all finished (217 ms). The difference is one pass over the parent's row headers.Row shapes were checked against OpenCode v2.2.5's

The first round (omo + Codex Terra xhigh) found the 64-entry module-wide cache's problems: a 65+ session livelock, rows kept after
/undoor replacement, and long histories using up the synchronous poll steps. It also found a foreground call left by a crashed parent run, a cancelled job read as failed, and a staged/undobeing ignored. All of these are fixed above. The omo re-review at 8c5da31 was CLEAR. The Codex re-review raised the items below, and they are why the reading is opt-in. Details and repros are in #3027./undois applied after only the newest record per child is kept.time_updatedwatermark keeps a stale call after a clock rollback, or a restore with the same ids and count.readOnand intasksOf, so a toggle mid-read publishes nothing stale.Note
OpenCode 2.2.x added a
session_parttable, so a later release may move an assistant row'scontentout ofsession_message.data. 2.2.5 still writes it inline. Once parts move, both the chat (server/opencode.ts) and this reader will need to readsession_part.
