feat(sidebar): manage a PC from a menu instead of a panel - #2997
Item 7 of the approved sidebar proposal. This is independent of B and D and based on main after the split PR (A, #2944) merged.
<MachineGroup>
<header> PC name · state · Manage · fold · +
- <inline panel> Rename form · connection/setup/update buttons · two-click removal+ <RowMenu> Rename… · Connect/Disconnect · setup · update · Hide on this device · Remove PC…+ <inline name field> Enter saves; Escape/blur cancels; IME respected+ <ConfirmDialog> removal failure stays in the dialog for retry
Manage PC uses Ovis's existing workspace/agent row menu: a desktop popover or phone sheet, headed by the PC's name, state and connection method. It no longer pushes the workspaces down. DESIGN.md records that precedent; no code is borrowed.
Existing restrictions stay: herdr-managed PCs have no rename/disconnect/remove here; herdr-core PCs offer only local Hide; relay PCs have no SSH setup/update. Setup/update availability still follows connection and setup state.
Rename, connect/disconnect and removal keep the synchronous in-flight guard. Removal still moves selection off the PC before the request and restores it on failure.
Hide uses the existing ovis:hidden-pcs rules over the full roster, preserving PCs already hidden. It is absent for the last shown PC. Focus moves to the existing hidden-PC note.
Includes docs, ko/ja/zh strings, changelog and browser-test updates. No server/, shared/, native or wire-contract changes; no B heading/filter changes or D hidden-PC heading control.
Evidence
Synthetic demo fixtures only; no live herdr session or private transcript.
Before, tests first on main 2da018f6: the unit test cannot import manageActions; layout fails the manage button says it opens a menu; removal and declutter time out waiting for the menu.
After: the same unit and browser checks pass, on this head as well (see Validation).

Validation
Initial publication on c99061f2, based on main 1d404b8e after A merged; all passed:
bun install --frozen-lockfile, then UNIT_TEST_WORKERS=2 bun run check fast: workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build and unit tests (12138 pass, 0 fail, 49 skip, 735 files).
On one fresh demo build: sidebar-machine-layout (16 scenarios, en/ko/ja/zh, phone widths 320/390, landscape 844×390 and 1280 desktop with 240px/520px sidebars), sidebar-machine-removal, sidebar-declutter, hide-pc, and A's sidebar-split (8) and sidebar-split-access (19).
bun scripts/machine-conflict-regression.ts.
bun run check run --build bun scripts/herdr-profiles-browser-qa.ts (desktop and phone).
Main has since gained 5a6484ce and b01e5e19, which touch none of this PR's files; git merge-tree reports a clean merge.
Review follow-up: fec1db5c
The phone drawer's capture-phase Escape handler used to close the drawer before the rename field could cancel and return focus. The layout test now requires that focus restoration on phones too: it failed on c99061f2 (en-phone-320-dark Escape in the field gives the focus back to the manage button, false !== true). The field now keeps its own Escape via data-own-escape; other drawer/search/dialog handling stays unchanged.
On frozen fec1db5c, all passed:
Required check fast: 12138 pass, 0 fail, 49 skip in 735 files; workflow/generated/typecheck/build checks also passed.
Layout, declutter and filter demos; removal, hide-PC, split and split-access demos; machine-conflict regression; isolated desktop/phone herdr-profile browser QA.
Conventions: 28 pass, 0 fail. No source changes during the final checks.
The screenshots above are the initial menu UI from c99061f2; the follow-up changes Escape handling, not its appearance.
The conflict and managed-profile scripts were adapted to the menu, not shown failing first on main. The latter uses an isolated test herdr, temporary state and a closed loopback setup target; it never connects to a real remote PC.
Not run locally: bun run check full, the entire test:ui suite, native Windows/macOS/iOS. The required CI checks still apply.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way. Client-only, with no stored-format or API change; reuses the existing hidden-PC key and row menu.
Blast Radius: sidebar. Every remote PC's Manage control changes, including keyboard focus, inline rename and removal confirmation. If D lands first, reconcile the shared full-roster prop/menu-heading styles and move Hide's focus target from the old note to D's header button. If B lands first, keep name-click folding from firing on the rename input.
Manage PC on a PC's header now opens the row menu a workspace's ⋯ uses (a
popover on a desktop, a sheet on a phone), headed by the PC's name, its state
and how it is reached, instead of a panel that pushed the workspaces down.
Rename… edits the name in place in the header; Disconnect or Connect,
Reconnect / setup and Update bridge… run as before; Hide on this device hides
the PC here under Settings → Remote PCs → Show in sidebar's rules and moves
the focus to the line that says it is hidden; Remove PC… asks in the confirm
dialog, which shows a failure in place.
A PC herdr manages still offers only its setup, its bridge update and hiding,
a machine of herdr-core only hiding, and a relay PC no SSH setup or bridge
update. The demo regressions for the PC layout, removal, declutter and bridge
conflict, and the herdr profiles browser check, drive the menu now.
Part of the sidebar proposal, devswha/ovis issue 2617 (item 7).
Manage PCs from a sidebar menu, shown as a sheet on phones. Rename PCs inline, hide them on this device, and remove them with a confirmation dialog.
The menu offers connection, setup, and bridge-update actions as applicable. Available actions vary by PC type and state, and unavailable actions are disabled.
Hidden PCs can be shown again in Settings → Remote PCs.
Documentation
Updated sidebar and setup guidance to explain PC visibility and the management menu.
The sidebar replaces inline PC management controls with a Manage PC menu and a removal confirmation dialog. It adds per-device PC hiding, adjusts available actions by PC type and state, and updates related tests, translations, and guidance.

Summary
Roster visibility and action availability src/App.tsx, src/components/MachineSidebar.tsx, src/components/MachineSidebar.test.ts, DESIGN.md
The sidebar receives the full machine roster and uses it to determine whether a PC can be hidden. It updates device-local hidden state and focuses the hidden-PC note. Tests cover actions and disabled states by PC type and machine state.
The Manage PC menu replaces inline controls. Rename uses an inline header field, and removal uses a confirmation dialog. Regression scripts cover menu behavior, responsive layout, removal states, and managed-PC restrictions. Translations and guidance describe the updated controls.
devswha/ovis#2617 — Its sidebar proposal includes the RowMenu actions implemented here.

devswha/ovis#1947 — Adds per-device hidden-PC behavior used by the new Hide on this device action.
devswha/ovis#2998 — Uses the full roster to identify hidden PCs and extends related hidden-PC menu behavior.
devswha/ovis#1891 — Covers PC removal behavior that this change moves from inline controls to a menu and dialog.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review fec1d
The sidebar is usable, but keyboard focus, concurrent PC actions, and localized removal-dialog regression coverage still need follow-up.

Hand focus to a surviving control after a successful PC removal.
While the removal runs, the dialog holds focus. After the DELETE succeeds, the roster drops the PC and its MachineGroup unmounts. That takes the dialog and the Manage PC button with it. Neither ConfirmDialog nor useFocusTrap restores focus after a successful deed, so focus falls to document.body. A keyboard user loses their position in the sidebar.
Fix this in the removal path. After mutate("DELETE", undefined, true) succeeds, move focus to a surviving sidebar control, such as the next PC's manage button or the sidebar heading. Use the same explicit handoff that focusHiddenNote uses for hide.

Disable Reconnect / setup and Update bridge while a Disconnect or Rename request is in flight.
Manage PC passes busy only to rename, toggle, and remove. Setup and update stay enabled during a pending Disconnect. If that Disconnect arrives after a setup connects, the server sets the PC to disabled while the setup reports Connected. Apply the busy state to the setup and update items in manageActions.

Rename requests.
The dialog opens only in en-desktop-240-dark. The ko, ja, and zh scenarios never open it. This script therefore does not check the dialog title or explanation in those locales. It also dropped the per-locale explanation check that ran in every scenario before this change.
Open Remove PC in each localized scenario. Assert the translated title and explanation for that scenario's language. Keep the English assertions for the English scenario. Close the dialog with Escape after the checks. The translations already exist in src/lib/i18n/machines.{ko,ja,zh}.ts at lines 41 and 44.

Cover a lost hidden PC in the Hide on this device check.
The check starts with an empty ovis:hidden-pcs list, so it passes whether withMachineHidden receives the full roster or only the visible PCs. A regression that drops earlier hidden IDs would still store ["sidebar-managed-fixture"] and go unnoticed.
Seed a different roster PC as hidden before this step. That PC must not be the local host, because hiding the host leaves only the managed PC shown, and canHideMachine then rejects Hide on it. The roster fixture (scripts/sidebar-machine-controls-fixture.ts) must provide a third PC that stays shown. If it does not, add an inert PC to its roster. Then assert that the stored list keeps both IDs, in order: the seeded PC first, then the managed PC.

The phone drawer handled Escape in the capture phase before the inline PC name field. It closed the drawer, the field lost focus, and the rename ended without giving focus back to Manage PC. A field marked data-own-escape now keeps Escape, so it cancels the rename, returns focus to Manage PC and leaves the drawer open. The layout regression now checks this on every phone width.

…d hold Hide while a PC request runs
Escape on Remove PC's confirm closed the phone drawer and left the dialog up:
the drawer's Escape handler only stood aside for role=dialog, and the confirm
is an alertdialog. Hide on this device unmounted the PC's row while a rename
or removal ran, dropping the row's in-flight guard with it.
The layout regression now opens Remove PC's confirm on every phone scenario
and presses Escape; the unit test holds Hide while busy. Both fail without
this change.
Thank you @duytbp, this is a careful change: the menu reuses the row menu cleanly, the PC-kind restrictions and in-flight guards all held up, and the failing-first evidence made it quick to verify.
What we changed on your branch
Merged origin/main in twice (no conflicts; DESIGN.md merged by itself).
Escape on Remove PC's confirm closed a phone's drawer and left the dialog up (390px: open the drawer, Manage → Remove PC…, Escape). The drawer's Escape handler in lib/useSidebarLayout.ts stood aside only for role="dialog", and ConfirmDialog is an alertdialog; it now stands aside for both. sidebar-machine-layout-demo-regression.ts now opens the confirm on every phone scenario and presses Escape (drawer stays out, focus back on the manage button, no DELETE); it timed out on the dialog before the fix.
Hide on this device now waits while a rename, connect or removal runs. Hiding drops the PC's row, and with it the row's in-flight guard, so a PC shown again before the first request finished could send a second rename. manageActions marks Hide disabled while busy; the unit test covers it and failed before.
Review and checks
Supply chain: no dependency, lockfile, patch or workflow changes; no network code.
Reproduced on main (this branch's tests on main 5b51cbe3): the unit test cannot import manageActions; sidebar-machine-layout fails "the manage button says it opens a menu"; sidebar-machine-removal and sidebar-declutter time out waiting for the menu.
On this branch, in the self-hosted CI runner image: the 13 browser scripts that cover the sidebar (sidebar-machine-layout, -removal, -declutter, -filter, -spacing, -split, -split-access, hide-pc, machine-conflict, recent-folders, revision-bound-update, herdr-profiles QA, ui-regression): 12 pass. ui-regression failed in our container on plain main too (the New workspace folder list is empty under the container's blank home), so CI's run of it is the one that counts. After the second merge of main: layout, removal, declutter and hide-pc pass again (4/4).
bun run check fast: passes on 61c87c2e (typecheck, build, unit tests).
Code reviews: the omo reviewer found nothing to fix (CLEAR). An adversarial Codex review found three MEDIUMs: the two fixed above, and that hiding the selected PC from a phone's drawer moves the selection to the Host, which closes the drawer. We reproduced that last one differently: the focus ends on the page body, as after any selection that closes the drawer, not on a control inside the closed drawer. We left it as is (LOW).

Thanks @duytbp - this is in. We merged main into your branch and fixed two reproduced MEDIUMs there with failing-first tests (phone: Escape on the Remove PC confirm closed the drawer and left the dialog; Hide is disabled while a PC request runs), keeping you as the author.
Local merge gate (owner-approved): external PR reviewed strictly (omo CLEAR at this head; Codex Terra xhigh adversarial: no HIGH), supply chain clean, the new tests fail on main and pass here, sidebar browser regressions pass, bun run check fast passed, threads resolved.
The name now folds its PC on a press (this PR), and Rename… (devswha#2997) puts the
name's field in the same title, so placing the caret in the field folded the
PC under it. The title's fold stands aside while the name is a field.
sidebar-machine-layout-demo-regression presses in the field in every scenario
and checks the PC stays open and the field keeps the focus; it fails without
this change.
