Fixes #1517

What

A copy made inside tmux (copy mode, or a program's OSC 52 such as vim's "+y or Claude Code's copy) never reached the browser clipboard: herdr's terminal attach stream drops tmux's OSC 52 (herdrdev/herdr#4612, fix herdrdev/herdr#5520 still unmerged). I re-checked on origin/main with herdr 0.9.5 and tmux 3.7b: the new browser regression below fails on main, with no clipboard write.

This adds the issue's opt-in stopgap, built so that Ovis never changes the user's own tool settings.

  • Opt-in setting, off by default. Settings → Terminal → Copies in tmux (tmuxCopy, a shared setting because it is the PC's). While it is off, nothing on the server touches tmux.

  • Hook set at runtime only, never in a file. Ovis never writes ~/.tmux.conf or any other file of the user's. While the setting is on, the server looks at each pane a browser shows, and does so again every 3 s. If the pane's foreground process is a tmux client, the server finds that client's socket from its argv (-S, -L, or tmux's default in $TMUX_TMPDIR/tmux-<uid>/). It confirms the socket with tmux list-clients, which must list that pid, and checks that the socket belongs to the server's own uid. Then it runs set-hook -g pane-set-clipboard[<port>] on that running tmux server. The hook takes an index of its own, so the user's own hooks on the event are left as they are. If that index already holds a hook that is not this server's, Ovis leaves it alone and sets nothing; it unsets only a hook whose text names its own URL.

  • Removed when no longer wanted. The hook is unset (set-hook -gu pane-set-clipboard[<port>]) when the setting turns off (a preference change sweeps at once), when no browser shows a pane running that tmux, or when the server stops. Hooked sockets are listed in tmux-hooks.json in the state folder, so a later start of the same server unsets hooks that a crash or kill left behind.

  • Route POST /api/tmux/copied. It is answered before sign-in, because the hook holds no token. It accepts a request only when all of these hold:

    • The peer is exactly 127.0.0.1, ::1 or ::ffff:127.0.0.1.
    • No proxy is in between: a loopback Host and no forwarding headers.
    • There is no Origin.
    • x-ovis-tmux-hook carries this server's random 32-byte secret, made per server start and compared in constant time. curl reads it with -H @file from tmux-hook-<port>.header, a per-server file created new with 0600 and exclusive create (an existing name, including a symlink, is unlinked first and never followed) and removed on stop, so the secret is never in the hook's command line, ps or show-hooks.

    Anything else gets 404, and so does any post while the setting is off, even before the sweep unsets the hook. The named socket must also be one this server hooked and owned by its uid; otherwise it gets 403. So neither another local user nor a web page can post fake clipboard text.

  • What is copied, and to whom. The hook sends only the socket and pane id, never the text. Posts for one tmux are read one at a time, in order. A hook's copy is the one buffer made since the last look (list-buffers name + created). It must also be tmux's automatic bufferN numbered exactly one past the highest number seen: a skipped number means tmux already dropped a copy (a small buffer-limit), possibly this hook's. When two or more appeared (copies close together, possibly in different windows), or the number skipped, none is sent: a copy reaches only the window it was made in, or nowhere. Copies over 100 KB are dropped, as OSC 52 drops them. The recipients are the clients attached when the post arrived, so a browser that joins during the read is not sent an earlier copy. It finds the tmux clients that show the copying pane's window, the ones tmux itself would set the clipboard of. It then sends { type: "pane-clipboard", pane_id, text } to the clients attached to the herdr panes running those clients. Nothing is replayed, and older clients ignore the frame.

  • Client. useTerminalMount takes the frame exactly as a live OSC 52 write: the same per-device Clipboard from a pane gate, presented/shown checks, Safari click reservation, and "copied to clipboard" / "clipboard write blocked" note, through one copyFromPane shared with the OSC 52 handler.

  • Limits. The hook needs curl and Ovis on 127.0.0.1. It is skipped on Windows, and for a state folder path with characters that cannot be quoted safely. Copy-mode copies work with tmux's default set-clipboard external. A program's OSC 52 inside tmux also needs the user's own set -g set-clipboard on, which Ovis does not set.

The design follows tmux's own set-clipboard and herdr's TUI clipboard_forwarding, which set the clipboard of the terminals showing the pane. The Settings row reuses the existing toggle row.

Settings → Terminal, captured at 390 and 1280 in light and dark with the switch off and on (isolated test server): the row matches its neighbours and there is no sideways scroll. The captures are kept with the lane's evidence.

Review round

The omo and Codex (Terra, xhigh) reviews were run on a218a6fd. Fixed in this round:

  • HIGH (omo, reproduced): with two windows copying almost at once, the newest buffer went to the wrong window. The one-new-buffer rule above closes it. With the same setup (session group, two clients on windows 0 and 1, real curl hooks, both OSC 52 writes in one tmux command), 10 of 10 runs now deliver nothing, where omo saw 6 of 10 cross over. A solo copy in either window still reaches its own pane.
  • MEDIUM: posts while the setting is off are refused; the secret file is per port and made safely; a user's hook at our index is kept; leftover hooks are cleared on the next start; posts are serialized per socket; recipients are captured on arrival.
  • Left as LOW: append-selection (the buffer changes in place) is not sent. A state folder path or curl path with characters the hook cannot quote sets no hook and logs once. On macOS a client's own TMUX_TMPDIR is not read (the server's is used). stop() is not awaited on SIGTERM; a leftover hook only runs a curl that fails, and the next start clears it.

Round 3 (omo on 03688e7e, reproduced HIGH): with buffer-limit 1, a copy in window B dropped window A's copy before A's post was read, and B's text went to A. This round only closes that HIGH, failing closed through the numbering rule above. A new unit test covers it, and fails without the check. The real-hook two-window race with buffer-limit 1 now gives 0 wrong deliveries in 10 runs, and solo copies still land.

Validation

  • bun test ./server/tmux-clipboard.test.ts ./server/dispatch.test.ts, with tmux 3.7b on PATH. The tmux tests use a throwaway tmux server on a mkdtemp socket, with a client in a Bun PTY, and are skipped without tmux. They cover:
    • no hook while the setting is off;
    • the indexed hook beside the user's own [0] hook once it is on;
    • the header file at 0600, with the secret not in the hook;
    • the hook removed on setting off, on the pane no longer shown, and on stop;
    • copies reaching only the pane whose client shows the window, nothing when two buffers are new, and nothing over 100 KB;
    • posts refused once the setting is off;
    • leftover hooks cleared by the next start, and a user's hook at our index neither replaced nor unset;
    • refusals without the secret or with a wrong one, from 127.0.0.2, a LAN peer, a proxied request or a page with an Origin, and for a socket it never hooked.
  • The dispatch test fails on origin/main (401) and passes here (404 before sign-in).
  • bun scripts/tmux-copy-regression.ts, on the isolated test herdr with a server on port 0, a mkdtemp state folder and headless Chromium. tmux runs on its own socket with a fixture config. With the setting off no hook is set. Once it is shared on, an app's OSC 52 inside tmux and a copy-mode copy both land on the clipboard, and turning it off removes the hook. On an origin/main worktree the clipboard part fails. The script is registered in ui-contexts-checks.ts and is skipped without tmux.
  • bun run typecheck: pass. bun run check fast: see the lane report (run on the merged head).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an opt-in Copies in tmux setting, off by default. When enabled, copies made in tmux copy mode or by programs can reach the browser clipboard while the pane is shown.
    • The setting is shared across browsers for the same server. Each device must also have Clipboard from a pane enabled.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup details, including requirements for program-originated copies and the need for curl.

Adds an opt-in, default-off setting that installs a tmux hook while a pane is shown. The server validates hook requests, reads tmux buffers, and sends copies to browsers showing the matching pane. The browser handles these messages through its existing clipboard path.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: an opt-in path that brings tmux copies to the browser clipboard. It also cites #1517 and uses the fix() prefix. The summary and objectives describe the same change, so the title matches the changeset.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#1517]. Server wiring, the dispatch route, tmux hook management, settings, protocol and client clipboard handling implement the feature. Tests, the regression script, documentation, translations, changelog, and fixture updates support the setting and its validation. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It explains the problem, resulting behavior, linked issue, security and lifecycle details, and validation results. The "What" heading replaces the template's "Change" heading, and HTTP route coverage is documented through dispatch and tmux tests.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1517] The PR implements the opt-in setting, runtime hook lifecycle, authenticated loopback route, tmux buffer routing, and shared browser clipboard path. The tests cover these areas. Two stated issue requirements remain unmet. MAX_TMUX_COPY_BYTES is 100 KiB, while the issue specifies a 1 MiB limit. handle() calls capture() when the POST arrives, not when tmux creates the buffer. A browser that connects after the copy but before the POST is handled can receive that copy. [#5520] describes a herdr-side change and does not add an Ovis implementation requirement that this repository can verify.

Resolution

For [#1517], support the specified 1 MiB limit through the server and client path, or revise the issue requirement. Record or filter recipients so a client connected after buffer creation cannot receive the copy. Add tests for the size boundary and the late-connection case.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 45.45% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 19 files. Review round 2 on 21d70e79: omo CLEAR and Codex (Terra, xhigh) no HIGH. CodeRabbit hit its review limit on this PR, so it did not review this head.

Findings left open after the one fix round. None of them blocks, and none was reproduced as user-facing:

  • MEDIUM (omo; the mechanism reproduces only with a forced ordering). stop() does not await tmuxCopy.stop() before server.stop(true). If a new server on the same state folder and port set its hook first, the old server's late cleanup could unset that hook and delete its header file. Only an in-process restart (tests) takes that path; a real restart ends the old process first. Possible fix: await the cleanup, or put a per-boot id in the hook text and header name.
  • LOW (omo; reproduced only with a non-default buffer-limit 1). The one-new-buffer rule cannot see a buffer evicted between two quick copies in different windows. Every client of that tmux server can paste all of its buffers anyway, so this is a correctness edge, not a boundary crossing. Possible fix: send nothing when a buffer seen last time is gone.
  • LOW (omo). list-clients is read when the post is handled, not at the moment of the copy, so a client switching windows in between could also be sent the copy. This stays within the same tmux server.
  • LOW (omo). A kill or systemctl stop without a graceful stop leaves the hook in place until the same server starts again. The leftover hook only runs a curl that fails, and no tmux message appears (checked). The guide says the hook is removed when Ovis stops; strictly, after a kill it is removed at the next start.
  • LOW (earlier round). append-selection (the buffer changes in place) is not sent. A state or curl path with characters the hook cannot quote sets no hook and logs once. On macOS a client's own TMUX_TMPDIR is not read.

Checks on this head: bun run check fast passed (12132 pass, 0 fail). server/tmux-clipboard.test.ts and server/dispatch.test.ts passed with tmux 3.7b. The browser regression scripts/tmux-copy-regression.ts passed on the isolated test herdr. The two-window race repro sent no copy in 10 of 10 runs, while a solo copy still reached its own pane.

Parking as a draft: the final review reproduced a new interleaving where a late hook post can deliver one window's copy to another. Findings and a direction are in #3000. Opt-in and off by default either way, but a clipboard must never get another window's text.

Cover the dispatch delegation with a stubbed tmuxCopy service.

The new test checks only the 404 refusal cases. A /api/tmux/copied handler that always returns 404 passes it. Accepted hook posts are covered only in server/tmux-clipboard.test.ts. That file calls hooked.handle directly, and it is skipped when tmux is absent.

Add a case that injects a stub tmuxCopy service. It needs no tmux, no enabled setting, and no hooked socket. It asserts that handleRequest returns the handler's 204 and passes the client address through. This test detects a regression in the dispatch wiring. It does not cover the browser delivery path.

scripts/tmux-copy-regression.ts: 1

62-74: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add refusal cases for pane-clipboard to the tmux copy regression.

The script checks only positive clipboard writes. It runs with paneClipboard on and a shown pane. Removing the osc52AllowedRef, shownRef, or presentedRef check in the pane-clipboard receiver (src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts:1379-1380) leaves every assertion unchanged.

paneClipboard is a device setting (src/lib/settings.ts:345). PUT /api/preferences accepts only SHARED_SETTING_KEYS (shared/preferences.ts:10-14), so that call cannot change it. Turn it off in the page's ovis:settings localStorage value, as scripts/replay-clipboard-demo-regression.ts:299 does.

Add cases that inject a { type: "pane-clipboard", pane_id, text } frame into the page's socket:

  • Disable paneClipboard on the device and keep the pane shown. Assert that no new clipboard write occurs.
  • Keep paneClipboard on and keep the pane's terminal mounted while the pane is hidden. Assert that no new clipboard write occurs.

Before each negative case, inject the same frame with the setting on and the pane shown, and wait for its clipboard write. This confirms that the frame reached the receiver, so the absent write is meaningful.

Name the set-clipboard on requirement in the release note.

The entry says a program's OSC 52 copy in tmux reaches the browser. tmux ignores that write unless set-clipboard is on, and its default is external. A user with the default tmux configuration who copies from a program in tmux gets no browser copy, and the release note does not warn them. Add the prerequisite that docs/guide.md states.

Qualify the delivery claim in the tmux copy section.

The guide says each copy reaches the browsers. The reader sends a copy only when it finds exactly one new tmux buffer. Two copies that reach tmux before a read, or an in-place append-selection update, send nothing. The guide does not state this limit.

Read the client's TMUX_TMPDIR on macOS, or the hook is never installed.

On macOS, clientTmpdir ignores the client's environment and uses Ovis's TMUX_TMPDIR or /tmp. A client with a custom TMUX_TMPDIR and no -S then fails realpathSync, so its pane gets no hook. Read the client's environment on macOS too, or document this limit.

Clear hooks recorded under earlier ports.

clearLeftovers reads only the entry for the current port. After a kill and a restart on another port, the old hook stays in the running tmux, and each copy runs a curl to the old port. Clean other ports only after confirming their server has stopped. A live server on another port must keep its hooks.

run returns null when a tmux command fails or times out. hookAt converts that null to an empty value and returns "free". If a user hook already occupies this index, install then runs set-hook -g pane-set-clipboard[index] and replaces it. Cleanup unsets the index and does not restore the user hook.

Keep the hook record until tmux confirms the unset.

Limit copy recipients to clients attached when tmux made the copy.

handle fixes the recipient set when the hook POST arrives (server/tmux-clipboard.ts, const tell = this.options.capture();). The hook runs after tmux makes the copy. A browser that attaches to the copying pane in that interval is in the set and receives the earlier buffer. The pane-clipboard contract in shared/protocol.ts says frames are never replayed and reach only clients that showed the pane when the copy was made.

Preserving this contract needs the recipient set captured at copy time. Comparing per-client attach times with buffer_created does not provide that. The code does not record attach times per client, and the precision of buffer_created is not shown. Choose a copy-time capture that does not depend on that comparison.

Stop attributing a copy to a pane when buffer-limit evicts an older buffer.

With buffer-limit 1, tmux deletes the older buffer when a second copy arrives. If the first hook post is read after the second copy, the second copy is the only fresh buffer. read() then sends it to the clients of the first pane's window. The code comment at lines 359-361 states that a copy reaches only its own window.

Keep a tmux copy from taking a pending click clipboard write.

The pane-clipboard branch passes framesReceived + 1 as the origin, so it can fill any reservation a click made earlier. If the clicked program's OSC 52 answer arrives after that, it finds no reservation. It then calls navigator.clipboard.writeText outside the gesture, which Safari rejects. Decide which copy owns the reservation, or keep tmux frames from taking it.

Review comment at @src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts around lines 1377 - 1380:
Update the pane-clipboard branch in the terminal mount flow so a tmux copy
cannot consume a pending click clipboard reservation; preserve the reservation
for the clicked program’s OSC 52 response, which may arrive later. Adjust how
this branch calls copyFromPane or assigns copy ownership without changing
unrelated clipboard behavior.
