feat(files): a text size of its own for an open file - #2968
Also fixes the stale row estimate on a chat size change listed in #2979 (its other points stay open there).
What
Settings → Appearance → Typography gets a File text size row: a size of its own for an open file's text, on this device, in the Markdown preview and in the source / plain-text view (popup, docked panel and the standalone reader alike).
Nothing chosen (the default, and every upgraded install): the preview follows the chat's size and the source keeps the interface's size, exactly as today.
A chosen size draws the preview's body at it and scales the source by the chosen size over the chat's (the stepper starts at the chat's size, so choosing that size changes nothing and every step moves the preview and the source the same way). The chat, the interface and the viewer's header/toolbar keep their own sizes.
Reset (shown only while a size is chosen) drops it again. Stored per device in a key of its own (ovis:file-font-size, as ovis:history-prompts), so an older open tab's whole-record save cannot drop it; clamped like the chat size (11–24 px); not collected by telemetry.
How it works: applyToDocument writes --file-scale (the chosen size, or the chat's, over the interface size), and --file-source-scale (the chosen size over the chat's) only once a size is chosen. .file-viewer-content takes --file-scale as its --chat-scale, so the preview's tokens scale exactly as the chat's do today. The source rules (.file-viewer-text, .file-viewer-select-source, .virtual-source) multiply --fs-xs by --file-source-scale (1 when unset). A virtualized source (over 2,000 lines) draws its rows in a shadow root: .virtual-source passes the scale in as --source-scale, which the shadow CSS (lib/sourceTheme.ts) multiplies into the row font and line height (a repository diff, which shares that CSS, keeps 1). When the size changes while such a file is open, VirtualSource re-measures its row estimate a frame later (the settings provider writes the variable in a passive effect), remounts the file at the new height and reveals the line the view showed, through the same anchor a wrap toggle uses. It also re-measures when the chat size, the interface size or the density changes (the source's size depends on them once a size is chosen).
Design precedent: VS Code's editor.fontSize, a reading size separate from the workbench's, as the issue cites. Within Ovis it follows the existing interface and chat size steppers (same control, same range as the chat size). The issue's open points, decided as: one setting covers preview and source (the source scales from its own interface size, so code stays smaller than prose as today); no file font family in this PR (a possible follow-up); narrow screens use the same stacked row as other wide controls.
Validation
Failing first: the new cases in src/lib/typography.test.ts (default, scope, follow chat, clamping) and src/lib/settings.test.ts (--file-scale / --file-source-scale written and removed) failed on main and pass now.
src/lib/settings.test.ts: the size survives an older tab's whole-record save (failed before it moved to its own key).
bun scripts/file-text-size-demo-regression.ts (new, listed in docs/development.md): at 390 and 1280, light and dark, on the demo build. Default: the preview follows a 21px chat (15 → 22.5px) and the source stays at 12px. With 18px chosen under a 21px chat: the preview is 19.29px and the source 10.29px (18/21 of 12px), while the chat stays at 21px and the viewer title at 16px. Settings: the stepper starts at the chat's size, a step up stores fileFontSize and moves the source up with it (scale 17/16), and Reset clears it. Korean, English, emoji and a long line are in the fixture files. A 3,000-line file (virtualized) draws its rows at the measured line height (30.86px at 24px) and reaches its last line; from the middle of the file, Reset (24px back to 12px) re-measures the rows (18px), the scroll height matches 3,000 rows within 5%, the top line stays within 3 lines, and the last line is still reached; a chat size raised while such a file is open (with a size chosen) re-measures its rows so the scroll height matches them (this step timed out before the fix). The checks failed before their fixes: the rows stayed 18px against a 30.86px estimate, and later the estimate stayed at the previous size.
bun run check fast: pass (workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck, build, unit tests). Skipped: the full browser lane and integration (left to CI).

New Features
Added a per-device file text size setting for Markdown previews and source views. Until you choose a size, file text follows chat text size; select Follow chat to restore this behavior.
Changing file text size does not affect chat or interface text.
Adds a per-device file text size setting. Markdown previews follow chat size by default, and source text retains its interface size until a file size is selected. The setting control, translations, and browser regression coverage are included.

Summary
File text size settings and scale application src/lib/settings.ts, src/lib/settings.legacy-fixture.ts, src/lib/settings.test.ts, src/lib/typography.test.ts
Adds nullable, device-scoped fileFontSize, which defaults to chat size for previews. Stored values are rounded and clamped to the chat font limits. Tests cover fallback, sanitization, and document scale updates.
Settings control and viewer sizing src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/components/SettingsControls.css, src/components/ChatView.css, src/components/FileViewer.css, src/components/VirtualSource.css, src/lib/i18n/settings.*.ts
Adds a File text size stepper and Follow chat action. Markdown previews and source text use file sizing scales. Adds Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese translations.
Browser regression and supporting updates scripts/file-text-size-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, scripts/ci-browser-timings.json, docs/development.md, changelog.d/file-text-size.md
Adds a browser regression covering default and selected sizes, reset behavior, and unchanged chat and viewer header sizes. Registers the script in browser CI and documents the check and setting.
The change has bounded issues: older tabs can reset the saved file size, the description misstates default source sizing, and changing size in an open large file leaves stale scrolling measurements. These warrant fixes or explicit follow-up, but no broad failure is established.

Explanation
Issue #2005 requires a device-persisted file reading size, a Follow chat reset, unchanged defaults, independent chat/interface/file sizing, Markdown and source coverage, all reader paths, readable content, and monospace source fallback. The supplied PR evidence reports device scope, 11–24 px sanitization, reset behavior, default inheritance, and automated tests for the sizing variables. The focused CSS confirms source text uses var(--font-mono) and applies the source scale to both regular and virtualized source views. The shared viewer content rules support popup and docked reader paths, and the regression script covers narrow and wide layouts, themes, language samples, emoji, and long lines.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation. The Change section explains the problem and the resulting behavior, and it links issue #2005 ("Fixes #2005"). It also states the defaults, the scope across the popup, docked panel, and standalone reader, the storage key, the clamping range, and the telemetry exclusion. The Validation section lists the failing-first tests, the new demo regression script with measured results, and bun run check fast as passing. It states that the full browser lane and integration were skipped and left to CI. The description is thorough and specific. The template's header comment asks for CONTRIBUTING.md checks and changelog entries, and the PR adds changelog.d/file-text-size.md, so that requirement is met. The description does not mention contract-test coverage for HTTP/WS changes. The PR does not appear to touch HTTP/WS code, so this is a minor gap and does not block the check.

Assert the preview scale after Follow chat resets the size.
The reset case removes --file-source-scale but does not check --file-scale. A change that skips the --file-scale write when fileFontSize is null would keep the previous custom value (24 / 14), and this test would still pass. The browser check in scripts/file-text-size-demo-regression.ts reads only the stepper and localStorage, so it would not catch that change either. Asserting the chat-derived scale closes the gap.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 4 included reviews per hour; 1 remain after this review.
MEDIUM (fixed in a938de3): a virtualized source (over 2,000 lines) ignored the size, because its rows sit in a shadow root, and the row estimate didn't match the rows, which could blank the viewport. The rows now take the scale through --source-scale. The regression covers it, and it failed before the fix (rows 18px against a 30.86px estimate).
MEDIUM (fixed in a938de3): an older open tab's whole-record save dropped fileFontSize. The size now lives in its own key, ovis:file-font-size, with a unit test.
Round 3 at 68ae927: the omo review blocked a938de3 on the stale re-measure (reproduced). It is fixed here instead of in a follow-up: VirtualSource measures a frame after the settings provider writes the variable, and reveals the line the view showed through the wrap toggle's anchor. #2975 is closed as fixed in this PR. The regression now changes the size from mid-file with Follow chat; it failed before the fix.
Round 4 (omo blocked 68ae927 on a reproduced MEDIUM; Codex had no HIGH):
Fixed: when the chat size differs from the interface size, the first step of File text size moved the source the opposite way (chat 24 -> one step down made the source 12 -> 19.7px). The source now scales by the chosen size over the chat's, where the stepper starts. Choosing that size changes nothing, and every step moves the preview and the source the same way. A unit test pins the direction (it failed before), and the demo regression checks the scale after a step.
omo LOWs, existing behaviour, not changed: another tab's size change applies on reload, as for the chat size; a virtualized source does not re-measure when the interface size changes (the same on main).
Round 4 (final) at 42e8133: omo CLEAR; Codex Terra (xhigh) found no HIGH.
MEDIUM (Codex; omo rated it LOW), reproduced: once a File text size is chosen, the source scales by the chosen size over the current chat size, so a later Chat font size change moves the source the opposite way (file 18px, chat 11 -> 24px: source 19.64 -> 9px; the preview stays put). Tracked in File viewer: a chosen File text size still moves with Chat font size in a file's source #2979.
MEDIUM (Codex; omo rated it LOW), reproduced: a long (virtualized) file open during that chat change keeps its old row estimate, because it re-measures only on a File text size change. The scroll height stays about 30-110% too large. In omo's run the view kept its line and the end was reachable; in Codex's run line 3000 was not reached. Tracked in File viewer: a chosen File text size still moves with Chat font size in a file's source #2979 too. The same stale estimate on an interface size change already exists on main.
Validation for this head: bun run check fast pass; bun scripts/file-text-size-demo-regression.ts pass at 390/1280, light and dark; settings/typography tests 114 pass.
Local merge gate (owner-approved): origin/main merged, bun run check fast passed at this head, threads resolved. Review at this head: omo and Codex report no HIGH; the one remaining MEDIUM (the source scale is a ratio to the chat size, so a later chat size change moves it) is tracked in #2979 and does not block (standing rule). The long-file re-measure fix and its regression step are included. Merged without waiting for GitHub CI.

Fixes#2979
## What
Follow-up to #2968 (Settings → Appearance → File text size). Once a size
was chosen, a file's source scaled by the chosen size over the
**current** chat size, so a later Chat font size change moved the source
the opposite way (file 24px: chat 11px drew the source at about 26px,
chat 24px at 12px), while the Markdown preview stayed put.
Now the chat size at the moment a file size is chosen is kept with it
(`fileFontFrom`, device-scoped, in its own key `ovis:file-font-from`
like `ovis:file-font-size`, so an older tab's whole-record save keeps
it; not collected by telemetry). The source scales by the chosen size
over that base:
- choosing the size the stepper starts at (the chat's) still changes
nothing, and each step moves the source with the preview (the property
#2968's last round added);
- a later chat size leaves the source alone;
- Reset clears both; a stored size without a base (hand-edited storage)
falls back to the current chat size.
The other #2979 points: the stale row estimate on a chat size change was
fixed in #2968 itself (VirtualSource re-measures on chat/interface size
and density), and the Settings description wording is unchanged here.
## Validation
- Failing first: the new cases in `src/lib/settings.test.ts` (the source
scale stays put across chat sizes; `fileFontFrom` survives an older
tab's save) failed against main and pass now; settings/typography/i18n
tests 139 pass.
- `bun scripts/file-text-size-demo-regression.ts` at 390 and 1280, light
and dark: the first step stores the base (16), a chat size change with a
chosen size leaves a long file's source line height unchanged, an
interface size change re-measures it, and the earlier
preview/source/Reset checks still pass.
- `bun run check fast`: pass (workflow syntax, generated files,
typecheck, build, unit tests). Skipped locally: the full browser lane
and integration (CI).
