fix(android): open a PC behind a sign-in page such as Cloudflare Access - #2924
The Android app could not open a PC reachable only through an authenticating proxy (Cloudflare Access, oauth2-proxy, Authelia, Pomerium and the like). The address redirects to the sign-in's origin, MainActivity held the redirect back, probed that origin's /api/health?scope=bridge, got no Ovis answer and showed the error page. In a phone browser the same address works.
A held-back redirect of the address being opened to an origin that does not answer as Ovis is taken for a sign-in in front of the PC and loads in the WebView. It gets no bridge (Capacitor's bridge stays limited to the PC's origin), and it is never saved and never becomes the PC.
Until a page of the PC loads, main-frame http(s) navigations (the sign-in's pages, the identity provider's, the way back to the PC) stay in the WebView instead of going to the browser, so the sign-in cookie lands in the WebView's store, which onPause already flushes. The app's own origin and other schemes still go through Capacitor.
The error page stays for what the app refused before: a redirect over public plain http or from https to http (PCStore.refusedHop, built on insecureHop), and the redirect limit.
Known limit (unchanged): identity providers that refuse embedded web views (Google sign-in answers disallowed_useragent) still fail. iOS keeps its current behaviour; docs/native-app.md says so.
Thanks to @candiesdoodle for the analysis and the proposal this follows.
Validation
bun run check fast: pass.
Android unit tests (./gradlew :app:testDebugUnitTest :app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac, JDK 21): 17/17 pass. The new PCStoreTest.aSignInInFrontOfThePcIsRefusedOnlyOverInsecureHttp failed to compile on main (no refusedHop) before the fix.
Not run: an on-device test against a real Cloudflare Access sign-in (no Android device or emulator here). CI does not run the Android unit tests.
A redirect of the address being opened to an origin that does not answer
as Ovis now loads as a sign-in in front of the PC instead of the error
page. It gets no bridge and is never saved or made the PC; until a page
of the PC loads, main-frame http(s) navigations stay in the WebView so
the sign-in cookie lands in the WebView's store. A redirect over public
plain http or from https to http still ends on the error page
(PCStore.refusedHop), as does the redirect limit.

Bug Fixes
Android sign-in pages for PCs behind authentication proxies now open within the app, and their session cookies remain in the app.
Sign-in redirects that use insecure connections may be blocked. Unsupported sign-in flows and redirects that exceed the limit continue to show an error page.
Documentation
Updated the native-app guide to clarify Android and iOS redirect behavior and sign-in limitations.
Android now keeps eligible non-Ovis sign-in redirects in the WebView until the PC page loads. It checks redirect hops against existing insecure-hop rules and documents unsupported cases and limits.

Summary
Redirect hop policy app/android/app/src/main/java/sh/ovis/app/PCStore.java, app/android/app/src/test/java/sh/ovis/app/PCStoreTest.java
PCStore.refusedHop checks the full redirect path when an Ovis origin is known. Otherwise, it checks the target origin. Tests cover HTTPS and HTTP sign-in redirects, unreadable hosts, and Ovis redirect paths.
When WebView supports WEB_MESSAGE_LISTENER, MainActivity loads non-Ovis redirects as sign-in pages without the bridge and keeps eligible main-frame navigation in the WebView. It rejects insecure hops, handles rejected HTTP POSTs with an empty response, and clears sign-in tracking when the PC page loads. The changelog and documentation describe behavior, limits, and cookie handling.
devswha/ovis#1903: Introduced Android redirect probing, redirect limits, and the insecure-hop checks extended here.
devswha/ovis#1697: Added the Android error-page handling and WEB_MESSAGE_LISTENER fallback used by this flow.
devswha/ovis#2514: Added the PC membership contract used to recognize a return to the current PC.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2008] requires Android sign-in redirects to load in the WebView without the bridge or PC storage, keep HTTP(S) main-frame sign-in navigation in the WebView until the PC loads, and retain refusal of insecure hops and excessive redirects. MainActivity.followRedirect starts signingIn for non-Ovis targets, loads the target without reopening the PC, and clears the state only when PCStore.belongs confirms a loaded PC page. Sign-in navigation uses refuseSignInStep; PCStore.refusedHop rejects public HTTP and HTTPS-to-HTTP transitions. The redirect limit remains enforced. PCStoreTest covers the insecure-hop rules, including unreadable target origins and Ovis probe paths. The documented embedded-WebView identity-provider limit and unchanged iOS behavior match the issue scope.

…he PC's first paint
Review round for #2924:
- each main-frame step of a sign-in is judged against the one before it
(PCStore.refusedHop), so a later redirect from https to http or to
public plain http ends on the error page;
- a WebView without WEB_MESSAGE_LISTENER keeps the error page, as
Capacitor's bridge there is a JavaScript interface any page can call;
- the sign-in ends when a page of the PC commits, not only when it has
finished loading.
Co-authored-by: candiesdoodle <20420013+candiesdoodle@users.noreply.github.com>
Review round (omo review CLEAR at 0563f27; Codex adversarial review), resolved in 5ae337c:
Fixed:
HIGH: a later step of the sign-in could redirect from https to http without a check. Each main-frame step is now judged against the one before it (PCStore.refusedHop) and ends on the error page when refused.
HIGH: on a WebView without WEB_MESSAGE_LISTENER, Capacitor's bridge is a JavaScript interface with no origin check. The sign-in path is now off there, and the previous error page stays.
MEDIUM: the sign-in state lasted until the PC page fully loaded. It now ends when a page of the PC commits.
Not changed, with reasons:
CapacitorCookiesAndroidInterface is reachable from any page (HIGH as reported). This is not new: frames on a PC page (previews) already reach it today. The sign-in origin is the one the PC's own address redirects to, so whoever controls it already controls what that address serves.
The health probe's response cookies go into Capacitor's cookie handler (HIGH as reported). This is pre-existing: the probe already asked every redirect target before this PR, and this PR does not change it.
A sign-in that ends on a different Ovis origin than the address opened loads without the bridge and is not saved (MEDIUM). Edge case; opening that address directly works.
A proxy whose sign-in cookie is a session cookie needs signing in again after the app restarts, because Capacitor's cookie plugin clears session cookies on load (MEDIUM). Cloudflare Access's CF_Authorization has an expiry, so it is kept.
Validation at 5ae337c: bun run check fast pass; Android :app:testDebugUnitTest :app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac 17/17 pass. Not run: on-device sign-in against real Cloudflare Access.
…e PC through
Second review round for #2924:
- WebView does not ask shouldOverrideUrlLoading about a form's POST, so
a main-frame POST over refused plain http is held in
shouldInterceptRequest before anything is sent;
- the way back to the PC's own address is never refused, so a plain-http
home PC behind an https sign-in can finish;
- the sign-in ends only when a page of the PC has loaded, not when any
page of its origin (a proxy's in-between page) first shows;
- docs: the session-cookie limit.
Co-authored-by: candiesdoodle <20420013+candiesdoodle@users.noreply.github.com>
Second review round (omo review BLOCK at 5ae337c), resolved in 676e41f (merged with main at f6bb977):
Fixed:
MEDIUM (reproduced): WebView does not ask shouldOverrideUrlLoading about a form's POST, so a sign-in form could post to public plain http. A main-frame POST over refused plain http is now held in shouldInterceptRequest before anything is sent, and the app shows the error page.
MEDIUM: the step back to the PC was judged like any other step, so a plain-http home PC behind an https sign-in (oauth2-proxy at http://192.168.1.5 with GitHub) could never finish. The way back to the PC's own address is never refused now.
MEDIUM: the sign-in ended when any page of the PC's origin first showed, including a proxy's in-between page. It now ends only when a page of the PC has loaded (onPageLoaded), as in the first round.
Docs: the session-cookie limit (Capacitor's cookie plugin clears session cookies when the app starts over; Cloudflare Access's cookie has an expiry).
Left as follow-ups (LOW, not changed here):
While signing in, a third-party link on the sign-in page (help, privacy) also stays in the app, which has no address bar.
A sign-in that returns to a different Ovis address than the one opened loads it without the bridge and does not save it.
Only PCStore.refusedHop has a unit test; the WebView steps in MainActivity have none, and CI does not run the Android unit tests.
The failing "Browser regression (ui-regression)" job at 5ae337c is scripts/terminal-ctrl-enter-regression.ts:89 (Control+Enter sent twice), a web-client terminal test; this PR changes only the Android app, its docs and a changelog fragment.
Validation at f6bb977: bun run check fast pass; Android :app:testDebugUnitTest :app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac 17/17 pass. Not run: on-device sign-in against real Cloudflare Access.
…http check is best effort
Third review round for #2924:
- PCStore.refusedHop refused nothing and insecureHop threw on a target
whose origin java.net.URI cannot read (an underscore in the host); it
is now refused as it is;
- docs: the plain-http check is best effort, as WebView follows a 307 or
308 redirect of a POST without asking shouldOverrideUrlLoading or
shouldInterceptRequest.
Co-authored-by: candiesdoodle <20420013+candiesdoodle@users.noreply.github.com>
Third review round (omo review BLOCK at f0e090d), resolved in the next push:
HIGH (reproduced): a sign-in server can answer a form's POST with 307/308 to public plain http, and WebView re-sends the POST there without calling shouldOverrideUrlLoading or shouldInterceptRequest. No WebView callback sees a redirected POST, so this cannot be held in code. Following the reviewer's second option, docs/native-app.md now says the plain-http check is best effort and names this case; my earlier comment's "a form's POST included" is corrected by this. A browser follows the same redirect, and only the sign-in server (the PC owner's proxy) can send it.
LOW (reproduced in a JVM test): PCStore.refusedHop threw a NullPointerException for a target whose origin java.net.URI cannot read (https://auth_server.corp.example/login). Such a target is now refused, and the new assertion in PCStoreTest failed before the fix.
MEDIUM (not reproduced, same on main): a sign-in page on the PC's own address (oauth2-proxy's own page) never turns sign-in mode on. Left for a follow-up.
Final review (omo review CLEAR at 06062dc). Findings left as is, per the last-round rule (no HIGH):
MEDIUM, not reproduced: Capacitor's CapacitorCookiesAndroidInterface is a JavaScript interface any page can call, so a hostile page inside a sign-in flow could set or delete cookies (including the PC's device cookie, forcing a re-pair). It cannot read anything. PC pages' preview frames reach the same interface on main today.
LOW: a 307/308 redirect of a sign-in POST to plain http is not caught. WebView gives no hook for it, and docs/native-app.md documents the check as best effort.
LOW, reproduced in a JVM test: PCStore.origin uses java.net.URI, which rejects characters Chromium leaves unescaped (|, {, ^), so an identity provider URL such as ...?login_hint=auth0|12345 ends the sign-in on the error page with a wrong "plain http" message. Main fails there too; the Cloudflare Access login URL parses fine. A fix would parse sign-in steps with android.net.Uri.
LOW: signInAt is not updated for a main-frame POST to https, so a later step from that page to a private http address is judged against the older origin.
LOW: onPageLoaded on any PC page ends sign-in mode, also in the middle of a multi-step flow.
LOW: an identity provider that answers a wrong password with a 4xx page gets replaced by error.html.
Pre-existing: a sign-in page on the PC's own address (oauth2-proxy's own page) never triggers sign-in mode.
CI: the "Integration tests" failure at f0e090d is server/pending-input.contract.test.ts (pending-input delivery), unrelated to this Android-only diff.

Add a unit test for the sign-in navigation branch.
No unit test reaches the signingIn branch of shouldOverrideUrlLoading. PCStoreTest covers only insecureHop, refusedHop, and publicHttp. Deleting the branch would leave the Android unit tests passing. Without the branch, main-frame HTTP(S) navigations to an identity provider's host during sign-in can open in the external browser, which breaks the sign-in flow. The branch's return-to-PC effect is not shown here: the PC's own host is the server URL, which the comment at lines 99-100 says stays in the WebView.
Extract the navigation decision into a method that receives the URL, the scheme, the main-frame flag, and the sign-in state, and returns the action. Then assert these cases:
A main-frame HTTP(S) step to an identity-provider host stays in the WebView.
A refused hop is rejected.
The app origin and other schemes fall through to Capacitor.

WebView does not call shouldOverrideUrlLoading for POST requests, so signInAt kept the origin before a form post. An http sign-in page posting to https left the next https-to-http step judged as http-to-http. shouldInterceptRequest now records the origin of every main-frame sign-in POST it lets through.
…n pages
CapacitorCookies is off, yet its load() adds CapacitorCookiesAndroidInterface, whose setCookie(domain, action) writes a cookie for any origin and is open to every page and frame. With a sign-in page in front of the PC now loading in the WebView, remove the interface when a PC opens. Capacitor's native bridge checks for it with typeof before use and patches document.cookie only when the plugin is enabled, so PC pages behave as before.
Review round on this PR (omo CLEAR at 140c8d2; Codex adversarial review on the same head), and what changed:
Fixed (86b80a8): Capacitor's CapacitorCookies plugin is off, but its load() still adds CapacitorCookiesAndroidInterface (Capacitor 8.5.3, plugin/CapacitorCookies.java), whose @JavascriptInterface setCookie(domain, action) writes a cookie for any origin and is open to every page and frame. Now that a sign-in page in front of the PC loads in the WebView, MainActivity removes that interface when a PC opens. Capacitor's native-bridge.js checks for it with typeof and patches document.cookie only when the plugin is enabled, so PC pages behave as before. Confirmed from Capacitor's source, not on a device.
Fixed (140c8d2): a sign-in step after a form POST is judged from the POST's origin (CodeRabbit thread).
Known limit, unchanged: a POST's 307/308 redirect is followed by WebView with no callback, so it cannot be checked before the body is sent (CodeRabbit thread; the code comment says the http check is best effort).
By design: the way back to the PC itself is never refused, also over plain http: the user chose that address, and the app already talks to that PC over it.
Not a regression, not changed: a proxy page served on the PC's own origin (for example a same-origin sign-in) is taken as the PC's page, as before this PR.
Validation at 86b80a8: bun run check fast passed (unit 12521 pass, 0 fail); Android :app:testDebugUnitTest :app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac (JDK 21) 17/17 pass. Not run: an on-device sign-in through a real Cloudflare Access (no Android device here).
Merge note: all GitHub checks green at this head, omo CLEAR at this head, threads resolved, Android unit tests 17/17. Review fixes: sign-in POSTs keep their origin; the CapacitorCookiesAndroidInterface (open to sign-in pages in Capacitor 8.5.3) is removed - the plugin is off, so PC pages are unchanged. A POST 307/308 redirect stays a documented WebView limit. Not run on a device yet; reaches users with the next Android build. Co-authored with candiesdoodle. Fixes #2008.
