fix(chat): recover remote follow-up receipts after reconnect - #2792
Remote follow-ups can remain Not confirmed after delivery when the browser loses the receipt. The same browser and device can now recover the exact sent or discarded outcome through the relay without typing again.
Implements the approved approach. The connection server derives an opaque UUID with a per-server random HMAC key scoped to the remote PC, authenticated device and browser UUID. Controlling connections receive it; watchers receive none. The bridge still applies its existing exact-message, retention and no-resend checks. Missing or expired receipts, or a restart of either server, leave the saved copy unconfirmed.
Refreshed onto upstream bad07c98 in 48d03935. The service-registration conflict was resolved by keeping both the per-server receipt identity and upstream account services; receipt-recovery behavior is unchanged. The duplicate-message UX remains a separate fork change.
Current head (48d03935): bun run check fast passed (11,871 unit tests; 46 repository skips), including typecheck and build. CodeRabbit follow-up adds closed-owner receipt retention coverage and method documentation; runtime behavior is unchanged.
Current head: isolated bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 runs passed server/pending-input.contract.test.ts (121 tests, including the new closed-owner explicit-resend case) and server/relay/session-ws.contract.test.ts (18 tests).
Prior head (5df8cc05): bun run check run bun /tmp/ovis-2792-refresh-contracts.ts passed; the wrapper ran bun test --timeout 30000 separately for server/pending-input.contract.test.ts (120 passed) and server/relay/session-ws.contract.test.ts (18 passed). Both relayed sent/discarded recovery cases passed without additional input.
Fresh full integration/browser and native-platform runs remain for upstream CI; earlier adversarial/browser evidence below is from the original implementation.
Earlier validation of the original implementation (62db9056):
Adversarial browser/bridge behavior pass: 40 final scenarios passed, 20 on the original PR build and 20 on the installed fork source (Node and Rust PTY hosts). Desktop/phone emulation covers lost receipts, reloads, repeated reconnects, device/watcher/PC isolation, restarts and early-submit refusal. No duplicate input, fabricated receipt or lost draft; twelve additional successful reconnects preserved draft focus. Initial harness readiness assumptions were corrected and documented. This is isolated fault-injection evidence; real-phone/native-agent dogfooding and a sustained soak remain unperformed.
New relayed sent/discarded contract cases failed on upstream before the fix at receipt recovery, then passed with it. They exercise a real bridge, prove another device with the same browser UUID and a watcher get no receipt, and assert zero additional herdr writes on reconnect.
bun run check fast: passed (11,250 unit tests; 44 repository skips).
bun test server/machine-relay.test.ts: 14 passed; server/PC/device/browser isolation, observer stripping and invalid IDs.
bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 server/pending-input.contract.test.ts: 120 passed.
bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 server/device-access.contract.test.ts server/ping.contract.test.ts: 27 passed.
bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 server/relay/session-ws.contract.test.ts: 17 passed, including the updated opaque-ID assertion over the relay transport.
bun run build:remote and bun run check run bun run test:ssh: passed with disposable OpenSSH, isolated herdr sessions and the Node PTY fallback.
Read-only review: the stale relay contract assertion was updated and verified; no unresolved findings. Independent external review could not start; an in-process adversarial review covered that pass.
Skipped: full integration/browser lanes, native Windows and Mac checks, and live-device dogfooding. Local toolchain: Bun 1.4.3, Node 26.7.0, herdr 0.9.5 (CI pins differ).
Isolated browser evidence: the built app, a real connection server, MachineRelay and a real loopback bridge, with a synthetic Codex input recorder. The PC roster/endpoint is injected; this is automated fixture evidence, not live/native-agent dogfooding. The same fixed build is shown before and after reconnect. Terminal bytes and submit counts stay unchanged, and the unsent draft survives.
Scope relayed receipt identities to the connection server, PC, authenticated
device and browser so a reconnect can recover an exact sent or discarded
outcome without resending terminal input. Keep the bridge checks unchanged.

Returning browsers can recover sent or discarded follow-up receipts after a lost connection, without resending the follow-up.
Receipt recovery is limited to the same server, machine, authenticated device, and browser. Watch-only connections cannot recover receipts.
Documentation
Clarified receipt retention limits. If a receipt is unavailable or a server restarts, the saved outcome remains Not confirmed.
Remote controlling browsers can recover sent or discarded follow-up receipts after reconnecting. The connection server scopes receipt IDs by server, remote PC, authenticated device, and browser. Contract tests cover isolation and verify that recovery does not resend terminal input.

Summary
Scope and forward receipt IDs server/machine-relay.ts, server/machine-relay.test.ts
RelayReceiptIds derives scoped IDs from a per-server key and the machine, device, and browser identifiers. MachineRelay forwards a scoped ID only for controlling attachments when a callback returns one. Tests cover scoping and attachment cases.
Wire receipt scoping into remote connections server/dispatch.ts, server/index.ts, server/relay/session-ws.contract.test.ts
Each server provides RelayReceiptIds to request handling. Remote WebSocket setup passes MachineRelay a callback that scopes IDs using the machine, device, and browser. The attach contract test checks the forwarded ID.
Verify recovery and document its scope server/pending-input.contract.test.ts, docs/remote-pcs.md, changelog.d/remote-receipt-recovery.md
Contract tests cover recovery of sent and discarded receipts, isolation by device and resume ID, and the absence of additional terminal bytes or writes. Documentation describes eligibility, retention limits, and cases that remain Not confirmed.
devswha/ovis#2041: Adds the local receipt resume ID and retention behavior that this change extends across remote relays.
devswha/ovis#2475: Implements local reconnect recovery for exact sent and discarded receipts; this change extends recovery to remote relays.

Explanation
The title "fix(chat): recover remote follow-up receipts after reconnect" matches the main change. The changeset adds RelayReceiptIds scoping and forwards a scoped receipt_resume_id on attach for controlling interactive relays, so a returning browser can recover sent or discarded remote follow-up receipts. The title is concise and specific, and it uses a conventional commit prefix.

Recovery without resend. MachineRelay.message() in server/machine-relay.ts now forwards a scoped receipt_resume_id on attach instead of always deleting it. The bridge checks are unchanged, so exact-message, retention, and no-resend behavior still apply. The added contract test in server/pending-input.contract.test.ts asserts that a reconnect produces no extra terminal bytes and no extra herdr writes, for both sent and discarded.
Scope to server, PC, device, and browser. RelayReceiptIds.scope(machine, device, browser) derives an HMAC-SHA256 UUID from [machine, device ?? null, browser]. server/dispatch.ts passes machineId and deviceId. The test shows that another drive device and a guessed browser UUID do not receive the receipt.
Controlling only. For readOnly relays, the callback is skipped and the field is deleted. The test covers a watch device.
Raw browser UUID not forwarded. The browser value is replaced by the derived ID. Invalid browser IDs return undefined and are removed.
Restart leaves the copy unconfirmed. The HMAC key is randomBytes(32) per RelayReceiptIds instance. server/index.ts creates a new instance per server, so a restart yields new identities.
Residual uncertainty: I did not run the tests. The verdict rests on source and test-diff inspection. The watcher case in the test depends on how Socket.attach and device role select read-only mode. That path was not traced.

server/machine-relay.ts: RelayReceiptIds class and the attach-forwarding change. This is the core implementation.
server/dispatch.ts and server/index.ts: wire RelayReceiptIds into RequestServices and pass the scope callback with machineId and deviceId. Both are needed for the scoping.
server/machine-relay.test.ts and server/relay/session-ws.contract.test.ts: test scoping, isolation, and forwarding for controlling and read-only relays. They also update the old assertion that receipt IDs were always stripped.
server/pending-input.contract.test.ts: relayed sent and discarded recovery, plus isolation cases.
docs/remote-pcs.md and changelog.d/remote-receipt-recovery.md: describe the new behavior and its limits. These are documentation for the change.
The PR description also records an upstream refresh and a contract-test import conflict fix. These are non-coding and do not add unrelated code. No unrelated behavior change was found.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template with both required sections. The Change section explains the problem (Not confirmed after delivery when the browser loses the receipt), the resulting behavior (same browser and device recover the exact sent or discarded outcome), the scoping, and links the approved issue and fix #2716. The Validation section lists the checks run (bun run check fast, targeted bun test runs, contract tests, build:remote, test:ssh), the results, and the skipped lanes (full integration/browser, native Windows and Mac, live-device dogfooding). The contract-test coverage requirement for WS changes is addressed by the session-ws and pending-input contract test runs. The description is long and includes some historical validation detail, but the required information is present and clear.

Cover receipt retention for a closed owner in the remote Codex cases.
Both remote cases record the sent or discarded removal before browser.disconnect(). No case records a removal while the owner is closed. A change that drops receipts for a closed owner would still pass these cases.
Add a remote Codex sent case:
Queue a follow-up while the agent is working.
Disconnect the owner. The item becomes held, and no removal is emitted.
Reconnect with the same resume ID, set the agent idle, and have the reconnected browser resend the held item with its resend_id. The disconnected socket sends nothing.
Reconnect with the same resume ID and assert the resumed: truesent replay.
This case covers retention for a closed owner. It does not test recovery without resending.

Exercise a receipt recorded for a closed owner after an explicit resend, then recover it without another delivery. Document scoped receipt identity lifetime and relay forwarding boundaries requested in review.
No case records a removal while the owner is closed.
Added a relay contract case that waits for the original owner’s server-side close and verifies the message is held, with no receipt or input written. It then explicitly resends from a reconnected browser, records the sent outcome against the closed owner, and recovers the exact resumed: true receipt on a further reconnect. It asserts one delivery, no reconnect input, no frames to the closed socket, and isolation from another device, a watcher and another browser UUID. This covers retention after an explicit resend; it does not claim that reconnect alone sends a held message.
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Documented RelayReceiptIds.scope and MachineRelay.message: identity scope and restart lifetime, invalid browser UUIDs, controlling versus observer attachments, raw-ID stripping and upstream malformed-frame validation. No runtime delivery behavior changed. The docstring metric has not been rerun locally.
Validation on this update: bun run check fast passed (11,664 unit tests, 46 repository skips, typecheck and build); bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 server/pending-input.contract.test.ts passed all 121 contract tests. Full upstream integration/browser and native-platform CI still require the maintainer’s approval for this fork PR.
Refreshed onto upstream bad07c98 in 48d03935 after the base advanced. The single service-registration conflict now preserves both relayReceiptIds and upstream’s account services. The CodeRabbit fixes remain in b8a46408; receipt-recovery behavior is unchanged.
Revalidated the committed merge: bun run check fast passed (11,871 tests, zero failures, 46 repository skips); isolated pending-input and relay/session WebSocket contract suites passed 121 and 18 tests respectively. Full hosted integration/browser and native-platform checks remain for upstream CI.
…, end a socket downgraded while it opened
Receipt IDs for a remote PC were derived from (PC, device, browser) only, so
two Portal or Tailscale sign-ins without a paired device sharing one browser
shared the same scoped ID. The principal now names the paired device, else the
proven Portal user and method, else the Tailscale login.
A device switched to watch while its /ws?machine_id= upgrade waited on the
other PC fired its revocation listeners before the socket registered one, so
the socket stayed open with drive rights (and a controlling receipt ID).
Admission now ends a driving socket whose device can no longer drive.
Thank you, @christso: this is a careful fix. Deriving a per-server HMAC identity scoped to the PC, device and browser is the right shape, and the contract tests (paired owner, second driver, watcher, closed owner after an explicit resend) cover the cases that matter. We had a local fix for #2716 with the same design. Yours is better (a key per server instead of per process, and broader tests), so we kept yours.
What we checked:
The three new contract tests in server/pending-input.contract.test.ts fail on origin/main (the replay never arrives) and pass on this branch.
The diff has no dependency, workflow, script or network changes.
Our code reviewer and an adversarial Codex review both ran.
The adversarial review raised two MEDIUM findings, which we fixed on your branch in one commit with a test that fails first for each:
Receipt scope without a paired device. Token, Tailscale-owner and Portal access carry no device id, so two Portal (or Tailscale) sign-ins sharing one browser got the same scoped ID. server/dispatch.ts now uses the paired device as the principal, else the proven Portal user and sign-in method, else the Tailscale login. The new test is in server/dispatch.test.ts.
Downgrade while a remote socket opens.readOnly is decided before await relay.ready. A device switched to watch during that wait fired its revocation listeners before the socket registered one, so the socket opened with drive rights and could forward a controlling receipt ID (and input). admit() in server/core/connections.ts now ends a driving socket whose device can no longer drive, with the same 1008 a live socket gets on a role change. The new test is in server/device-access.contract.test.ts. The race predates this PR; forwarding receipts made it matter more.
We also merged origin/main in, added one line each to the changelog fragment and docs/remote-pcs.md, and gave the connections.test.ts fake a canDrive.
Left as is (LOW, not a follow-up issue): a drive-capable browser that attaches in observe mode and then switches back to interact does not rerun receipt recovery for the already attached pane. The copy stays Not confirmed until the next reattach. The local path behaves the same way.
Validation: bun run check fast passed. The focused suites also passed: pending-input.contract, machine-relay, relay/session-ws.contract, dispatch, device-access.contract and server/core/.
A small follow-up from a second adversarial pass (no blocking findings): the Portal receipt test now waits for each attach before sending the next, since each one arrives over its own upstream socket, and Tailscale logins are lowercased in the receipt principal, matching how access compares them. bun run check fast passed again at 569f823, which also merges the latest origin/main.
Local merge gate (owner-approved): external PR reviewed strictly (omo CLEAR at this head; Codex Terra xhigh two rounds: 2 MEDIUM and 2 LOW fixed with failing-first tests, 1 LOW in the PR comment); the 3 new contract tests fail on main and pass here; supply chain clean; bun run check fast passed; threads resolved; main moved one commit since (herdr-core/opencode only, no overlap). Touches authentication/WS session handling, so the omo + Codex reviews stand in for CodeRabbit. Fixes #2716.
